WHAT IF WE DIDN’T HAVE TO EAT:))

DSC_0005-6

A FEW SIGNS OF AN EARLY AUTUMN ARE BEGINNING TO APPEAR

Woke up to the sounds of a steady rain on the roof this morning. A slight mist hung lazily on still air leaving our tall Pine trees drooping with moisture. No dusty forest trail under our feet this morning & our old wooden rain barrel was full & overflowing.

---

Had myself an appointment this afternoon with the Surgeon fella who removed a suspicious Melanoma looking spot on my chest nearly a month ago.  Lab results came back saying the growth was benign, meaning it was not cancerous.  Another bullet dodged this summer with one more to go.  My PSA (prostate) level numbers were up a bit on my last two tests with the second test having a lower number than the first…..which is good.  Dr. Bukala, my Urologist & kidney stone guy want’s to see me in early September after I have one more PSA test.  If I have a good number, we are cleared for take-off to the Southwest in October:))

Peter over at AMERICAN TRAVELER had a post this morning on his thoughts about food. The good stuff & the bad stuff. And, what is it doing to us? Well, that got me to thinking about something I have often thought about over the years. What if we didn't have to eat:))

---

Long time readers know I am not a 'foody' person so it's only natural for me to ponder the question of, 'what would life be like if we didn't have to keep replenishing ourselves on a daily basis with food'. Well, I see a lot of positives here & I think if we 'eaters' could re-wire our bodies some day to function without food or water, that would be a good thing.
---
The bulk of food we take in has to basically be eliminated, so how nice would it be to get rid of those body waste elimination procedures for starters. Think of it, no more toilets or icky public washrooms. No more need to interrupt our travels with a couple dozen washroom breaks between points A & B.  No more doing that dance in your pants trying to hold things off before reaching a washroom.  How about a solid night's sleep without all those nocturnal trips to you know where. Maybe we could even keep our house interiors smelling a little fresher as well…..not to mention car interiors.
DSC_3620 No more spending big money at fancy waaaaaay over priced restaurants. McDonald's, KFC & Burger King would just be old world ancient history. No more food related diseases. Think how healthy we could be. Fat talk & fat jokes would be gone forever. Clothes manufacturers would only make 'one size fit's all'. No more boring cooking shows on television. How great is that. And, think about how much time could be saved if we humans weren't always talking or complaining about food .  Recipe's would be non existent.  And, no more foody blogs.  And how about being free from all those weight loss commercials & diet pills.  No need to go out & buy fancy China & silverware anymore.  The list & possibilities are endless.

---
No food would mean no need for teeth. Now, think of the benefits here. No more excruciating tooth aches, fillings or root canals & above all all, no more way over the top unnecessary horrendous dentist bills. No more big bellies or big butts. The word diet could at last be dropped from the dictionary. Think of all the time we would have on our hands if we weren't eating, thinking of eating, preparing, or disposing of food .

---
Well, in reality, we all know there's not much chance of re-evolving our bodies any time soon & to kick start the evolution process we would have to all cut down & eventually stop eating and we know that isn't going to happen. I like my peanut butter!!  But, if we do manage to successfully re-wire ourselves someday, then I think we should next turn our attention to our legs. Will they really be necessary if we can solve this gravitational thing at some point. Yep, I have some thoughts about all that too. But, enough for today. Figure a lot of folks have already X'd me out & headed for the refrigerator...................:))

GROANER'S CORNER:(( Little Johnny and his family lived in the country, and as a result seldom had guests. He was eager to help his mother after his father appeared with two dinner guests from the office.
When the dinner was nearly over, Little Johnny went to the kitchen and proudly carried in the first piece of apple pie, giving it to his father who passed it to a guest. Little Johnny came in with a second piece of pie and gave it to his father, who again gave it to a guest.
This was too much for Little Johnny, who said, "It's no use, Dad. The pieces are all the same size."

AND WHY ISN’T A FOOTLONG HOT DOG…..A FOOT LONG!!!!

CAUGHT THIS CANADIAN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY WITH MY LITTLE CARRY ALONG POINT & SHOOT CANON POWERSHOT SX210IS THIS AFTERNOON…TAKEN FROM OUR CAR WINDOW NEAR OUR MAIL ROOM WITH THE LENS FULLY ZOOMED

Only thing we did today was slip down to Mitchell & see Uncle Harry. He seemed to be feeling better than the last few weeks & Pheebs even got some smiles out of him. Harry has a bit of a problem talking on the telephone now so his sister, Jean (Aunt Jean) emailed us a letter for him & we printed it off & the photo below shows Kelly reading the letter to Harry this morning.

ON THE WAY HOME OUR LITTLE BACK SEAT DOGGY SOMEHOW SLIPPED ONTO MOM’S LAP IN THE FRONT SEAT

Had an email from RETIRED ROD the other day wondering if we had considered buying & towing a small enclosed utility trailer to Arizona this winter. It would hook onto the Jeep behind the rig & we could load it with some stuff for our house there. Briefly thought about that but discounted the idea for several reasons. Don't think I would be real comfortable towing a combination like that for starters. We may have to go the long way round to reach Arizona this winter & I'm sure the extra weight of a trailer would chew through a lot more gas. I do need a utility trailer down there but it does not have to be anything fancy. Just a simple box on wheels like we have here in Bayfield. There's no room in the Jeep to put anything of size we might find at garage sales etc. Just need it to haul home some rocks & stuff from the desert & take garbage to the local dump. Paid $300 for our Bayfield utility trailer just about 10 years ago now & it has served us well.  (a big thanks to neighbor & friend Bruce who refurbished it two summers ago)

SURE HAVE HAULED A LOT OF STUFF IN THIS SIMPLE LITTLE UTILITY TRAILER OVER THE YEARS

Kelly came across another RV Blogger's travel blog awhile back. Fellow's name is Andy Baird & you will find some very excellent nature photography here along with his narrative. Be sure to check out his MOUNT EVANS post photos of wild Mountain Goats. I have put him on our sidebar……but, like ED FREY'S blog, it doesn't update itself with each post so unfortunately it will continually sit at the bottom of the list.  I've never been able to figure that problem out.  At least you have some company down there now Ed:))

---

Just occurred to me today that I missed my annual foot long hot dog back in the Spring. For over 9 years now I've made an annual trip to the south end of Bayfield for my foot long hot dog (with the works) at the Woodland Drive-In. Maybe I figured until they found the missing 3 inches, I wasn't going back because every year I went I would end up asking myself the same question!! Why isn't a footlong hot dog......a foot long?? I always suspected the foot long of being a shorty, so one day I took along my tape measure & measured the dog & sure enough it came out to 9 inches. Why is that!!!! If your going to call it a footlong hot dog then make it a foot long!! Does not 12 inches = 12 inches anymore?? Why can't the butcher & the baker get together & agree to match their products to 12 inches. (no, the Candlestick maker has nothing to do with this) Or, maybe the Drive-In should be advertising them as, "9 inchTube Steaks" or "Mini-Footlongs" or "Stretched 8 inch Dogs" or "Shortened Pig in a Blanket" or "Swine in Nine!!" Or maybe they should just knock off 40 cents an inch or something. I'm not singling out the Woodland Drive-In here & I bet anywhere one goes for a foot long hot dog it is probably going to come out on the shorter end of things. Throw a tape measure in your pocket & check it out next time.
DSC_0025

OLD FOOTLONG HOT DOG FILE PHOTO (looks like I may have already chomped an end off this dog)
And why is that every time I go to put an electrical plug into a socket it is never the right way round. The fat prong is always at the smaller hole & vice versa. And since when did extension cords have to have minds of their own. No matter how straight I lay out a long extension cord, as soon as I turn my back it twists itself up like a spastic pretzel & the longer I'm away the more spastiker it gets!! Tangled extension cords can reduce me to tears in seconds:(( And garden hoses.....where do they get off thinking they're so smart. Try & walk anywhere with a garden hose in your hand & it's going to snag itself on something. Even if there's nothing there to snag itself on, it's going to snag itself anyway just to be miserable. And to add insult to injury, it will kink itself as well. I call that a kink & snag!! Kinks & snags can also reduce me to tears in seconds:(( And how about whenever you bend over to pick something up, you have to drop it!! I call that...... pick & drop. Happens to me almost every time.  Bend over to pick something up, drop it, pick it again, drop it again, pick up again……well, you know how it goes!!  Hate when that happens.

---

And why does the shovel, rake, or whatever long handled device you lean against a tree or something, have to fall over as soon as you turn your back. I have leaned garden rakes against things, stood there & stared at it to make sure it wouldn't fall, turned around to walk away......."clunk!!" And how come I can't hit a nail on the head like everybody else. Awhile back I was nailing up some old pine fence rails with 5 inch nails. No big deal except it would take me 10 swings at that nail to hit it twice. And when I did hit it, the nail would go in crooked or go flying off over the fence into the flowerbed somewhere!! Hammers & nails can reduce me to tears in seconds. And, don't even ask me about small gasoline engines:((
IMG_0093

DRIVE-WAY GATE TO OUR BACK YARD
I do have one good thing on my side though. A darn good handy & patient wife. I was trying to put air in one of the Santa Fe's tires one morning. Getting air into a tire for me has always been a major feat. I don't know why that is but it just is. Had the compressor going full tilt but try as I might the air just wouldn't co-operate again. Kelly walks over, picks up the hose, puts it on the valve & whoosh, all the happy little air particle guys merrily rush off into the tire. Same thing happened a few years ago on the Ranch in Arizona when I was trying to blow up a bicycle tire. No way Jose!! Kelly comes over & whoosh, away go the happy little air guys again. These kinds of happenings are almost a daily occurrence at our house but instead of looking on the negative side of things & my limited abilities, I have to look on the positive side & be thankful I have a mechanically patient, calm, cool, & collected wife who understands her husband is a bit of an impatient boob when it comes to handyman things. But hey.......I'm still pretty darned good at getting tightly stuck on jar lids off..............:))

---

In Sunday's post I talked about our experience at the south rim of the Grand Canyon & a few people mentioned we would like the North Rim better. Couldn't agree more. I first visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in May of 1992 & Kelly & I were there back in November of 07 before swinging around to the south rim a few days later. No comparison between the two rims as far as people go. Both times at the North Rim there were no great hordes of people. Especially when Kelly & I were there. Maybe half a dozen cars in the parking lot, if that. Totally loved the North Rim & would like to go back & spend a week or so there sometime. In the meantime be sure to check out Chuck & Gerri's post over at HAPPY TRAILS. They have some great photos of a storm passing through the Canyon. They met another RV Blogger at the rim who was able to show them around. GAELYN is a Park Ranger there. We met Chuck & Gerri at Darby Wells Road near Ajo Arizona this past winter & we met Gaelyn near Congress Arizona this past March when we dropped in to see RV SUE & HER CANINE CREW boondocked in the desert near the end of Ghost Town Road:))

REMEMBERING A ROUGH NIGHT AT THE GRAND CANYON

DSC_0043

SUMMER IS ALWAYS A BUSY MONTH IN BAYFIELD’S HARBOR

Had it in my mind to head off this morning for a drive in the country but just never got the plan pulled together. Gray overcast skies with the threat of rain hung around all morning & by the time we blossomed into a bright sunny afternoon my ambition had waned. Did manage to tackle an inside job that I had been putting off for quite awhile though. Years ago, hooking up stereos, amps, TV's, tape decks, equalizers etc was something I did not have a big problem doing.  But, something changed somewhere & with the advent of DVD players, CD decks, cable boxes, MTO's, ATV's, HBO's & whatever other electronic gizmo's came down the electronic pipe, the only wires that became frazzled & confused over time were in my head.

DSC_0014

DSC_0028 DSC_0017

ALONG BAYFIELD’S MAIN STREET

The huge mass of wires behind our television, cable box, DVD player, amp & television just left me standing there with a blank look on my face this morning but I knew if I wanted to make some necessary changes to our system I would have to do it myself. Actually, it was just the cable box I was wanting to move higher making it more accessible for the remote. If nothing else, the whole area in the corner behind the television was needing a major clean up anyway. Out came the vacuum, a bucket of water & a sponge. Finished that little job up with a nice feeling of accomplishment. Now, to unplug some wires!!

DSC_0026Normally I would just unplug the cables from the back of the box, move it to where I wanted it & plug the cables back in. Key word there was 'normally'. Besides my age giving me more aching muscles & joints than I really need, it has also given me a couple of smarts. And, one of those smarts told me to draw a diagram of where the wires & cables were plugged into the cable box. Sat on the floor & sketched me out some schematics. Ten minutes later I had the television elevated & the box moved to it's new location underneath. Thanks to my drawing I able to get all the right cables in the right holes & the job was done. Cranked up the system & everything worked perfectly. Ahhhhh, another sense of accomplishment. Minutes later I rewarded myself with a peanut butter & honey sandwich before stretching out for a well deserved afternoon snooze in my recliner.

DSC_0029

THE GOOD LUCK DUCK has some nice photos from the south rim of the Grand Canyon & it's a place I hope we can return to some day. Our very first visit there was just not the best experience we've ever had.  A second visit a couple days later was a bit disappointing as well, but not because of the Canyon………it was the hordes of people!!  On that second daytime visit there were just waaaaay to many people milling about everywhere for us to enjoy the spectacular splendor & magic that lay before us.

OUR GRAND CANYON DAY…NOVEMBER 26TH 2007

A few years back we left Kanab Az one morning heading for the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Didn't know we had a rough RVing night ahead of us!! Our day was fine but we made the mistake of arriving at the east gate of the Canyon way too late in the day. It was late in the month of November 2007 & we hadn't taken into consideration the low angle of the setting sun, & we were headed right into it.

DSC_0027

As I remember it, highway 89 runs fairly straight & level all the way South from Page Arizona to Cameron where we turned west & headed into the Grand Canyon National Park. It was getting late in the day & as the sun began to dip to-wards the horizon, visibility became more of a challenge. Rolled up to the Parks east gate around 5 & with the Forest Ranger's words, "the campgrounds all filled up" our day began to rapidly deteriorate. Never occurred to us to make reservations. We proceeded into the Park but had a very difficult time on the confusing roads because of the blinding sun in our eyes. Didn't take us long to become totally disoriented & completely lost.DSC_0049

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is much larger than I had imagined & with the sun in our faces we missed important turning signs & campground directions. After about a half hour's frustrating drive we blew right out the Park's south gate before we even knew it. Found a spot to turn around & re-entered the Park, asked for new directions, & promptly got lost all over again. It just seemed to be a maze of roads choked with cars, campers, & people scurrying every which a way. We were looking for the Mather campground where the Ranger guy thought there might be some primitive (no electric) camping sites left. You can only imagine how tired & frustrated we were by now. By the time we found the camping area we were about ready to turn around & go back to Canada.

 DSC_0057
Took a drive through the campsites with electricity on the off chance we might find a vacancy but the place was jammed wall to wall & tree to tree with RV's packed in every which a way like sardines. It was obvious to us the biggest mistake we had made was failing to know that this was the big American Thanksgiving long week-end & everybody's brother & uncle had flocked to the Grand Canyon to spend their Thanksgiving there in the beautiful weather. I think all the large cities in the west had dumped their entire populations into the Grand Canyon's south rim that weekend. We somehow located the other camping area without electricity & had to un-hook the car before entering because we could see it was going to be a tight squeeze on the narrow roads. And to make matters worse, night had fallen & it was dark as the ace of Spades!!
DSC_0037

DSC_0030 DSC_0033

I drove the motorhome & Kelly followed in the car as we squeaked into a narrow uneven campsite. Well, we assumed it was a campsite, but who knows. Activated the automatic levelling system & tried putting the hydraulic jacks down to level the coach but I didn't think they sounded right. Meanwhile Kelly had spotted what she thought was a better spot just up the road so I reluctantly retracted the jacks & backed out of the tight spot & pulled into the other spot. Still very uneven & not much better than where we had been. Put on the emergency brake, & flicked the switch for the hydraulic jacks & .........nothing happened!! The system never activated & was totally dead...no power to the jacks. That lead to a second problem because now we were unable to level the coach which meant we could not take the chance of putting our two slides out because at that off angle we were afraid our larger living room slide might not re-tract again & that would have left us in a real pickle. Of course by this time, after a long drive from Kanab I am a totally stressed out wreck. Kelly is trying her best to hold things to-gether & even the little doggy guys were all buzzed out. They looked like they had all stuck their little paws into a light socket. I looked & felt even worse:((

DSC_0009

DSC_0024 DSC_0066
Temperatures had rapidly dropped to below the freezing mark so we got the furnace going on battery power. Lit some candles because I didn't want to use the lights & run the risk of further draining the battery. Didn't sound like the furnace was running right & we didn't want to kill our battery so we turned if off. These were the days before we had solar power. Here we were at one of the world's most beautiful places & we hadn't even seen it because we knew that we had to pull out at first light & head the 75 miles to Flagstaff Arizona in hopes of finding a garage open before the week-end. Needed someone to figure out what had gone wrong with our hydraulic jacks.  Kelly made a few phone calls & found a place to look at it. Needless to say, with the slides in, 3 restless dogs, 2 very stressed out people, furnace not on plus the rig tilted at an angle with an unknown leveller problem, it was a very miserable night...........to say the least.

DSC_0058

We were up long before the sun & straggled our way out of the campground heading south with our dash heater on full blast trying to thaw out. It was a pretty quiet drive to Flagstaff that morning with nobody saying much, not even the dogs. We did get the leveller problem solved & later spent the rest of the day & next night totally vegged out at a KOA near Williams Az before heading back towards the Grand Canyon again. Found a run down Freddy Flintstone RV Park along the way & made that our base for visiting the Canyon over the next few days. I'm sure we would have enjoyed the Grand Canyon more if it had not been jammed with soooooo many people. It definitely warrants a return visit some day........if & when there are not so many people all over the place!!

A FEW PHOTOS FROM DOWNTOWN BAYFIELD TODAY…..& DREAMS

A FEW PHOTOS ALONG BAYFIELD’S MAIN STREET TODAY…ABOVE IS BAYFIELD’S HISTORIC LITTLE INN

We are creeping right along through another August & each day I try to think of something to keep myself busy. I find that it is not so much having nothing to do as it is not having the interest to do something. And, therein lies the heart of my problem each summer. But, not to worry, I'm not not going to kick open the door to the complaint department again. Things will begin to ramp up a bit in September & we still have lots of planning & packing to figure out along with decisions on what to take with us to our house in Congress this October.
DSC_0020

BAYFIELD’S MAIN STREET IS ALSO THE SITE OF THE NEWLY OPENED VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL
We have lots of Blue Jays at our bird station these days & their squawking fills the air. Very few songbirds left & some of them may have already begun their southward journeys. My 'stove pipe' around the bird station post a few months ago put an end to the squirrels & raccoons gaining access to the birdseed on the station. Guess it's safe to say, after many battles these past few years, Al finally won the war. Or, so it seems..........for now.

KELLY’S FAVORITE EATERY & COFFEE SHOP WHEN SHE’S AT WORK

The weather people called for a 100% chance of rain today.  We never got a drop!!  Had me a hankerin for a Tuna Sub about 11:30 this morning so loaded up the little Pheeberlicious & it was off to Bayfield we went.  Summer week-ends in Bayfield are always busy with lots of tourists but we lucked out & I walked right in & up to the Subway counter.  I was the only one there but it was only a minute before a big gang rolled in behind me.  Pheebs held the fort down out in the Jeep.  Shared our 6” Sub in the parking lot.  Problem was, now we both had Tuna breath!!  Eeeeyuk, didn’t want to be cruising around with that smell hanging out of our faces so it was off to the ice cream store on Bayfield’s main street.  Asked for the smallest Butter Pecan cone they had.  Turned out to be a double decker but we did manage to plough our way through it.  A quick walk up the street netted me a few pics for tonight’s post & that was it & we headed home.  Another Saturday behind us.

KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THAT CONE PHEEBS

Ever wonder about dreams? I am sometimes a lite sleeper so frequently wake up 2 or 3 times during the night. Not very restful but I do dream a lot & I figure the reason I remember them is simply due to the fact that I don't slip into that deep heavy sleep for the entire night. A lite doze in my chair seems to be the best time for remembered dreams though. I have also learned that as I am waking up from a dream I can remember it better if I don't open my eyes. I can liken it to opening the back of a camera with a roll of unexposed film in it. As soon as the light hits the film the images are erased. Same thing with the brain so if I'm coming out of a dream I resist the urge to open my eyes. Well, as long as it was a good dream anyway. I try to go back into a dream sometimes but am seldom successful.  It usually fades from memory very quickly.

INSET PICTURE SHOWS WHAT THE NEW LIBRARY, REST ROOMS & POST OFFICE WILL SOON LOOK LIKE ON BAYFIELD’S MAIN STREET

I like the flying dreams best as I float over trees & people on the ground. I have never remembered a landing but my take off is always the same. I take about 4 steps forward & then very carefully lift one foot higher & step up into the air & begin to float skyward. Sometimes I fly very fast but most times I just kind of move along slowly hovering over the tree tops looking at things on the ground below.

DSC_0018

DSC_0032 DSC_0019

Meeting old friends is another part of dreaming I enjoy. People from 50 & 60 years ago drift in & out. Max, Checkers, & the Motormouse sometimes come scampering by to visit. No rhyme or reason but all of a sudden there they are & I'm talking & playing with them. Could also be a person I only met once or twice decades ago or it could be a current friend. The people who have the most impact & leave the longest lasting memories for me are the ones who have passed away. In any dream sequence, a departed friend or relative may appear & it is always such a great feeling inside to once again see & talk to them. And, it all seems so real. And then, just as they mysteriously appeared, they drift away again & a feeling of profound sadness fills the void. It is those dreams I try to hang onto as long as I can before waking up. Sometimes, I try to re-enter the dream & run after that old friend to see them just one more time, to talk to them just one more time, & to tell them things I just never got around to telling them when they were here.   But, they are gone.  I always hope that someday, they will re-appear to once again put a warm smile on my sleeping face..................

"Make a noise like a frog because Grandma said that as soon as you croak, we're all going to Disney Land!!!"
