BREAKFAST FOR THREE IN ST. MARYS ONTARIO

ROLLING EASTWARD THROUGH ST. MARYS THIS MORNING....THIS NORMALLY BUSY MAINSTREET IS LOOKING LIKE A GHOSTOWN
It was under sullen gray skies that Kelly and I in the Subaru rolled out of our driveway early this morning heading for St. Mary's Ontario.  We were there to meet our good friends Gayle and Richard at Joe's Diner for breakfast.  However, it was only Richard waiting for us.  Gayle was too ill to make it so it was only we three heading inside.  Kelly had had a difficult night as well and was not feeling the best either.  Luckily they serve a good breakfast at the diner and Kelly was able to eat almost everything she ordered.  Had it been a few decades or more ago our breakfasts may very well have been the same but our morning conversation would have been of a much different nature.  It was another era for all of us at that time.  We may have talked and remembered those crazy, wild, and zany things of life that we have all lived at one point or another and we would have talked of hopes and dreams, future plans, projects,  challenges, and accomplishments.  But, time has traveled on for us and we have reluctantly entered into our Senior years where the words 'wild and zany' no longer hold the same zip, sparkle, and excitement they once did.  Well, not to the extent that some of those shenanigans we all were once a part of did that's for sure.  We now find ourselves in the world of aches and pains, doctors, procedures, illnesses, ambulances, nurses, paramedics, pharmacies, emergency rooms, medical appointments, daily pills, and just about anything else that can happen with an aging body and mind.  Can't help it, but it's just the reality of where we wild and zany folks are now.  The movers and shakers before us are gone and the movers and shakers behind us are fast upon our heels. But still, we try our best to accept where we are in this journey and understand and deal with the frailties of life as it plods steadily onwards carrying us to our final destiny.............and perhaps beyond.

Three RV memories of years ago on this date.  January 8th, 2011...A Return To Old Fort Rucker and Return To Ghost Mountain on January 9th, 2009.  While linking the Ghost Mountain post I noticed something that happened the day before on January 8th that is an example of Kelly's tough resolve... Mountain Palm Canyon Hike And An Injury

GROANER'S CORNER:((   Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter, ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one has to drop off, otherwise they are all going to fall.  They were not able to choose that person, but then the woman made a very touching speech.  She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because as a woman she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids, and for men in general, without ever getting anything in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping their hands.

IT HELPS ME EACH DAY TO KEEP MY AGE AT BAY

OH DARN IT'S SNOWING IN OUR FRONT YARD AGAIN
We've always had soft lighting in our front yard by the frog pond but the southwest corner of our yard has always been on the dark side.  With Kelly putting up more outdoor Christmas lights I figured I'd better get on the band wagon and help out with a few Christmas lighting ideas of my own so it was off to the Canadian Tire Store in Goderich this morning to browse their Christmas lights.  Found a couple colorful rotating Noma lights and chucked them in the Jeep.
SPOTTED THE CANADIAN COAST GUARD SHIP LIMNOS IN GODERICH'S HARBOR THIS MORNING
THE FISHING AND TUGBOAT PIER IS STILL SLIGHTLY UNDER WATER
Next over to Walmart for a few things plus a few double AA and triple AAA batteries.  Had looked at batteries in Canadian Tire but was staggered by the price.  It seems every time I buy batteries they are about double the price of last time I bought batteries.  And here's another thing that really bugs me about those types of batteries.  There was a time when one could buy a pack of two.  But  oh-no now they have these mega-packs with enough batteries in them to lift an aircraft off the ground.  So anyway I managed to find a pack of 4 Triple AAA's and a pack of 6 Double AA Energizers.  Way more batteries than I really need for now.  I go to the cashier and she politely and in a most helpful manner suggests I could save myself some serious dollars if I were to get the larger packs on sale.  Well Okay then so back I go and sure enough there are the ones on sale I missed.  So instead of paying nearly $20 I was able to save about $4 and go home with 36 batteries instead of the 9 batteries I had originally picked up.  Now I have about 32 batteries more than I had set out to buy.  I thanked the lady cashier and told her my wife will really be proud of me when I get home and tell her about saving some big bucks.  "Of course." I told the lady, "I will have to tell my wife 'another woman' was involved in my good fortune."  I don't know who's face was redder when I left the store, hers or mine.
THIS SHORELINE RESTORATION IS TAKING PLACE AT THE NORTH END OF ST. CHRISTOPHERS BEACH ALONSIDE THE HARBOR'S SOUTH PIER
When I pulled the Jeep into Goderich's south end car wash about ten this morning it was cloudy and when I backed it out five minutes later I backed it out into sunlight.  Oh now nice when things like that happen.  Twenty minutes later we were home and I set about hooking up our new Noma lights in the front yard.  I really enjoyed feeling the warmth of today's sun beaming through our sunroom windows but just as I was about to take Pheebs for a sunny afternoon walk it was like somebody up and shook a snow globe.  Within 5 minutes our ground was white and it just kept coming down.  At the time of posting tonight all is clear.

TRUCKS ARE HAULING IN VARIOUS SIZES OF ROCK TO FILL IN AND BUILD UP ERODED SHORELINE AREAS....DID YA SEE PHEEBS?
SHORELINE RECONSTRUCTION MATERIALS ARE SHOWING UP
One of the main reasons for adding 'Memory Lane', 'Foibles and Fumbles' and 'Al's Favs' to my blog is simply to keep myself busy, to challenge my mind to rid itself of the ever advancing age related cobwebs.  Digging back through Bayfield Bunch archives, trying to find photos on external hard drives, locating old photo albums, pieces of music, etc. then pulling them all together may not sound like much for many folks but for me and my aging mind it's getting to be a real effort but it's one I must continue every day.  Repetition is the key for me.  Where once my mind could have slipped through these procedures reasonably well I now find myself sitting at my keyboard in blank mode at times completely forgetting how to do something I had just done minutes before.  As frustrating as it is at times there is an enjoyment in re-visiting days gone by whether by photos or words.  It's a form of therapy for me I suppose and also a way to keep at bay the daily weaving of new cobwebs.  Not an easy feat anymore.
CANADA GEESE HANGING AROUND THE GODERICH GRAIN ELEVATORS WAITING FOR TRUCKS LOADED WITH CORN TO COME IN AND SPILL A LITTLE BIT OF THEIR LOAD
Adding to the above paragraph I find myself leaving cupboard doors open, heading inside or outside to either do or get something.  It is regularly a challenge when I have to stop and try to remember what I'm doing or where I'm going.  I say to myself, 'Okay I know I've come outside here to get something but what the hell was it I came outside to get.  There was a time when these little slips of memory were thought of as normal, laughable, and not to be taken too seriously.  Another 'ha-ha' moment to be shared with friends.  That is not the case now.  It's not funny or laughable for me anymore and I find I am not only frustrated but angry for these continuous daily slip ups and memory lapses.  I've always been critical of myself but not as much as I have been recently.  Always something going on with all of us eh...…...
ALWAYS AMAZES ME HOW SEAGULLS CAN FLY AROUND WITHOUT THEIR HEADS ATTACHED AND STILL FIND A POST TO LAND ON
::Memory Lane::  In keeping with the Fort (Camp) Rucker and Mary Kidder Rak homestead theme from two posts ago tonight's Memory Lane takes us back to a day when I posted, We Are At The Ranch...But Our Jeep Is 63 Miles Away.  It was January 10th 2012.  I do have to apologize for some of the underexposed photos in this post but fixed the worst ones and put them into a photo album entitled Fort Rucker and Aunt Jean.  Bear with me on of this folks because some of this 'Google Photo' and Google Album stuff is either a relearning curve for me or something totally new to me.  But we're getting there and putting these 'Memory Lane' and 'Al's Favs' along with 'Foibles and Fumbles' posts together with my blog is helping me each day to keep my age at bay.

GROANER'S CORNER:((  The symphony orchestra was performing Beethoven's Ninth.  In the piece, there's a long passage, about 20 minutes, during which the bass violinists have nothing to do.  Rather than sit around that whole time looking stupid, some bassists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door for a quick one.  After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them looked at his watch and said, "Hey! We need to get back!"  "No need to panic," said a fellow bassist. "I thought we might need some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conductor's score together with string. It'll take him a few minutes to get it untangled."  A few moments later they staggered back to the concert hall and took their places in the orchestra.  About this time, a member of the audience noticed the conductor seemed a bit edgy and said as much to her companion.  "Well, of course," said her companion. "Don't you see? It's the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded."

NOT MUCH GOING ON HERE TODAY BUT CLIMB ABOARD ANYWAY FOR A TRIP TO OLD FORT RUCKER IN ARIZONA'S CHIRICAHUA MOUNTANS

Had I not had a blast of energy by mid morning the day would have been a bust.  Short Jeep ride around Bayfield earlier today and we were home again almost before we knew we had even left.  Only took myself four photos and two of them were bridge construction shots.  Temps were up a couple degrees from Tuesday and I found myself with our leaf blower blowing out the carport plus front porch and deck.  Ran an outside extension cord for more Christmas lights in the front yard then headed inside where I kept the pace going .  Had a lot of camera and computer stuff piled up in drawers in the sunroom so I spent a fair bit time organizing going through everything, tossing this and keeping that.  I think some of the stuff dated back to the 1800's.  Amazing how things accumulate over the years.  Tore through my clothes closet like a hurricane on fire and hauled shirts out I hadn't worn for the last five years.  A lot of those shirts I've been hanging on to in case I lose weight.  Geeezzzz, who am I trying to kid.  This ain't high school no more.
MORE STEEL GOING IN FOR THE TEMPORARY BRIDGE

Thursday we are off to London's University Hospital where Kelly has a 2 p.m. consultation appointment with her Hepatology Gastroenterology Doctor.  While she's there I will zip over to Henry's Camera Store and pick myself up a protective lens hood and filter for my Nikon CP900.

::Memory Lane:: In tonight's Memory Lane post we go back to March 14th 2009 when Kelly and I went back into the Chiricahua Mountains for the second time in search of Old Fort Rucker and this time we found it.  No easy feat.  Not only did we find old Fort Rucker but we were to find out the old house on the property once belonged to Mary Kidder Rak and her husband Charlie.  It is the house you will see in my Photo Album as well as Old Fort Rucker.  She wrote a book called The Cowman's Wife which chronicles her and her husband Charlie's lives in the very house I have in my photo album.  I really recommend this book.  The hard struggles they endured, the good times, and the in between times.  This was the true west many years ago when endurance was a common factor.  Kelly and I visited Old Fort Rucker and Mary Kidder Rak's homestead a number of times during our ranch sitting days and what I think I will do is keep the whole Fort Rucker and Mary Kidder Rak story together and feature some of those trips over the next few posts.

FLORIDA JEAN BATTLED HURRICANE IRMA WITH TWO MOPS AND A BUCKET

DSC_0015

It was about 8 p.m. when Aunt Jean called from Florida Monday night to tell us she was doing fine.  Aside from a lot of small debris constantly hitting the side of her condo her only concern was the water seeping in under the front door pushed there by relentless wind gusts.  With two mops and a bucket she was able to keep that water seepage under control.  Other than that she said everything went well and she was even able to fall asleep around 3.a.m despite the winds howling at her door.  It was so good to hear her voice on the phone last night.  Jean asked me to thank all the readers who expressed concern for her and her safety.

Kelly’s sister and husband had a large awning ripped off the front of their mobile home in Clearwater while they stayed with their son in a stronger house not too far away.  Last we heard they still didn’t have power there.  Seems to be some damage to neighbor Monica’s carport in Frost Proof but she doesn’t know the extent of it.  And it looks like Cherie and Chris’s boat survived hurricane Irma down there in the Florida Keys at Marathon.  A big relief for them.  Technomadia

If you really like Hummingbirds you will really love this You Tube….. Slow Motion Hummingbirds.  And I liked Desert USA's latest edition with two articles about places Kelly and I have been to many times.  A Night on Ghost Mountain of course was particularly interesting to me since we have hiked up there a number of times.  Type ‘Marshal South’ into ‘Search’ on our sidebar for all my posts over the years about Ghost Mountain.  And The Night They Shot Mangas Coloradas takes place in a historical area we are very familiar with from our ranch sitting days near McNeal, Bisbee, and Tombstone Arizona.  Type Fort Bowie into our ‘Search’ bar.  Or Fort Rucker, Tombstone, Bisbee, Cochise Stronghold, John Slaughter Ranch, or, or, or….. We have soooooooo many great memories from that whole southeastern area of Arizona and I’ve posted about every one of them from early 2008 to early 2012.  You can find all my posts under ‘Archives’ on our side bar right underneath the ‘Search’ box.

Not too much going on around here today.  Pheebs and I did get out for a short drive but I was anxious to get back home and get the shingles off the second half of our shed roof before the sun got up over the pine trees and made the job too hot for me.  On our way home from Goderich we passed Kelly on her way to Goderich.  I did get the shingles off the second half of the shed roof but dammit I hurt my wrist again and had to go inside right away and ice it.  That’s probably going to put a hold on things for another couple days.  Very annoying!!

It will soon be time to begin my annual frog round-up.  Our front yard pond is not deep enough for frogs to survive the winter so each year I have to catch the little green fellers and transport them over to our Park’s big pond where they can get down deep into the mud.  I’m thinking there may only be half a dozen frogs in our pond this year and that number is way down from years ago when I had dozens of them to catch with my net.  Maybe I will begin that round-up tomorrow.

Still no movement on this winter’s travel plans yet.  Unlike other years we somehow seem to have a kind of shadow hanging over us.  I don’t know if it’s a cloak we have pulled over ourselves or what.  Maybe things will kick into gear in a few weeks or maybe next month at this time.  Or maybe I’ll be out shopping for a new winter coat with a parka and a pair of size 10 fleece lined snow boots:((

GROANER’S CORNER:((   I was in a couple’s home trying to fix their Internet connection. The husband called out to his wife in the other room for the computer password. “Start with a capital S, then 123,” she shouted back.  We tried S123 several times, but it didn’t work. So we called the wife in. As she input the password, she muttered, “I really don’t know what’s so difficult about typing Start123.”

"OK," the man says. "Why did you make women so pretty?"   GOD says, "So you would like them."
"OK," the guy says. "But how come you made them so beautiful?"   "So you would LOVE them", GOD replies.   The man ponders a moment and then asks, "But why did you make them such airheads?"   GOD says, "So they would love you!"

COLD NIGHT, WINDY MORNING AND CRUISING THROUGH TOMBSTONE ARIZONA

DSC_0010

MORNING WALK

Okay so where the heck are we anyway??  Well let me see now……we’re in Arizona’s Cochise County with Sierra Vista 20 minutes to the west, Tombstone about 20 minutes northeast, Bisbee 20 minutes southeast and the Mexican border maybe 25 minutes due south.  All estimated times of course.DSC_0005

I’M THINKING THIS WASH HEADING FOR THE SAN PEDRO RIVER MAY HAVE IT’S ORIGIN IN THE DISTANT MULE MOUNTAIN RANGE IN THE BACKGROUND

ONE HAS TO ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WALKING ON ANKLE TWISTING ROCKS

And where is it we’re parked??  At the moment we are parked at friends of ours who we met through the RV Net Forum way back in January 2009 when we came to this area for the very first time.  (here’s a link to one of the days Roy Rogers) Our friends names are Pat and Nancy who by the way are also RV boon-dockers who sometimes travel in their Casita travel trailer.  I wrote in one of my posts years ago about how because of the Bayfield Bunch these folks left California and came here to this area of Cochise County, bought a 10 acre piece of property and built a new house.  All solar powered I may add.  It’s a story of coincidences and I will try to find that post which will explain the series of events which landed these fine folks right here where we are parked for the next week or so.

DSC_0013

NANCY AND PAT’S HOUSE ON THE LEFT AND US ON THE RIGHT

Now, why are we here??  Readers may remember Kelly’s brother Peter and wife Leslie coming to visit us in Congress during January for the past 3 years.  They are from Webster New York and Arizona has grown on them.  Wanting to return again this January they expressed an interest in seeing southeastern Arizona where Kelly and did some ranch sitting for a few years in our early travel days.   ‘Walla’ we’ve been wanting to return to this memorable area for the last few areas anyway so a plan quickly came together.  Peter and Leslie are flying into Phoenix Friday morning then with a rental car are coming down here to Sierra Vista where they will stay at the Fairfield Inn.

DSC_0001

BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE RAIN HEADED OUR WAY WE MAY MOVE THE MOTORHOME HERE TO THIS OLD BUT FIRMER STRETCH OF ROAD ON PAT AND NANCY’S PROPERTY

We haven’t firmed up any plans on just where we will be going or what we will be seeing yet but along with Sierra Vista we’ll likely be driving up to Coronado Peak in the Huachucas and slipping down the other side along the Mexican border then north to Parker Lake.  Tombstone, Bisbee, and some of the true ghost towns like Fairfield, Gleeson and Pearce.  We’ll maybe do the Middle March road through the Dragoon Mountains, the Chiricahua Monument, and maybe Fort Bowie.  We hope to get up and over the Chiricahua Mountains and down the other side to Portal near the New Mexico State line.  Rucker Canyon, old Fort Rucker, and the Mary Kidder Rak homestead are on the agenda as well.  Might get over to the Whitewater Draw near McNeal too.DSC_0006

We arrived at Nancy and Pat’s place about mid afternoon Wednesday and for the moment we are parked near their house but with a good chance of a 2 day rain coming up on the week-end we may move a short distance away on their property where the ground is firmer with less chance of mud.  Desert mud in this area is like gumbo and sticks to shoes and paws like cement.  Because of our higher altitude now in southeastern Arizona (4200’) our night’s are much colder so we’re probably going to have to slip the rig into Sierra Vista to top up our propane tank.  By the way Nancy and Pat had us in Wednesday night for a delicious BBQ chicken dinner with a great cheese and onion laced scalloped potato dish:))

DSC_0001

WITH RAIN IN THE FORECAST WE MAY RE-LOCATE A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY TO THIS OLD FIRMER ROAD BED

Generally after a travel day we like to have a relaxation day but neither one of us felt much like relaxing so with Pheebs anxious to get rolling we all piled into the Jeep and headed into Sierra Vista.  The traffic reminded a bit of Sarasota Florida but only maybe half as bad.  Wanting to know where Leslie and Peter would be staying we first located the Fairfield Inn.  Great location just steps from a handy indoor mall complete with movie theaters, eateries, Sears, Best Buy, Dilliards etc.  Appleby’s, Texas Roadhouse, and more.

DSC_0014

Stopped into a place called Schlotzsky's for a sandwich then slipped over to the big Fry’s Supermarket for a few things.  Been a few years since we been in there and they must have changed the store around because I couldn’t seem to connect on one single memory of it.  The store looked different than what I remembered.  I really like the spot lighting they use to display their natural health food section.  Kelly picked up a few things while I walked around the store looking at all the really neat-o colors.

Wanting to touch base with a few old memories we headed out the Charleston Road towards Tombstone reminiscing about our time boon-docking on a scenic slab of cement there for a week one time.  Great memories of our search for the old ghost towns of Charleston and Millville.  Our times in Tombstone as well.

From Tombstone we headed south down highway 80 to the junction of highway 90 and turned right for Sierra Vista.  Wasn’t long and we were back to Nancy and Pat’s place and that was it for our day’s outing.  Very windy here so we kinda hung out inside.  Things will begin to ramp up for us Friday and we should have us a busy week coming up.

There was a barber who paid close attention at his parish whenever the topic of evangelization was discussed. He thought he should be doing more to share his faith with his customers. The next morning the barber told the Lord in prayer, “Today I’m going to witness to the first customer who walks through my door.”A man came in as he opened his shop and said, “I need a shave.” The barber said, “Yes sir! Just have a seat and I’ll be right with you.” The barber went in the back and prayed a quick prayer saying, “Lord, the first customer just came in and I’m going to witness to him. Give me the wisdom to know just the right thing to say. Amen.”Then the barber came out with his straight razor in one hand and a Bible in the other and told his customer, “I have a question for you: Are you read to meet your Maker?”
