I MAY FEEL DIFFERNTLY TOMORROW, BUT FOR TODAY, I AM KEEPING THE DOOR OPEN A CRACK

This morning, I again woke up with a decision on my mind.  It's a decision I have been wrestling with on and off for a long time.  Going back years, in fact.  But, in the past few months, weeks, and days, it has been on my mind again.  As much as I have enjoyed, and for the most part, still enjoy doing my daily blog, I feel it has, over time, become like an aging and all too predictable Dinosaur.  I originally started the blog back in 2006 to document the RV travels of Kelly, myself, and our three dogs, Max, Checkers, Cora, and later, Pheebs.  Thus, the name, Travel With The Bayfield Bunch'.  Those wonderful travels regretfully ended back in 2019, and here it is, 2025, and yes, some days it feels like I am definitely flogging an old Dinosaur.  I'm sure, with my constant repetition, readers have sensed this as well.  I don't want to say that this is my last post, or close to my last post, because to make that decision is to close the door and lock it behind me.  I may feel differently tomorrow, but for today, I am keeping that door open, just a crack.......................

  1. I agree. Definitely time to turn the page and let your creative thoughts flow in a different direction.

  2. I do not agree! I am selfish! There is so much wrong with this world we are living in. Your blog is one of the VERY FEW good things. The glimpse of sunshine in a dark place. For sure it is a drag for you sometimes. Trying to come up with ideas to post is work, especially since you are not traveling and collecting inspiration from those experiences. On the other hand, you are traveling through life. And reaching a hand out to your readers who have followed you for years through thick and thin. And who love you dearly. You are so much appreciated. Please don't close the door, Al. Take breaks if need be, but....................

    2. Al, you have to do what's best for you, but I hope and pray that you will continue. You give so many so much. Some days you are all I look forward to. You have the best blog I have ever followed. Please stay with us, but if you must leave, I wish you peace in your heart.

  3. Please do not stop blogging - take a break when needed, but you must know how much people like me - (old, living alone and sometimes lonely) look forward to enjoying your blog every evening, along with all the add ons like groaner's corner, the doggie world, and all the beautiful pictures. Your blog is a much looked forward to reward each evening.

  4. I agree The Bayfield bunch is the first blog I go too. Truthfully I would be lost if you didn’t continue on. We all miss Kelly and you have kept her memories alive for us. I know Wooday is helping you through this difficult time and Kelly would agree you. Need us as much as we need you!

  5. From Marilyn Struthers. I didn't know I could respond this way. Al, I understand your thoughts and I know you wil do what you feel best about doing. However, I would be very sad to lose your blog. I love your photos of nature---so many beautiful things to see plus I love to read your writings. However I respect your decesion whatever it is. I have loved getting to know you through your blog. I know why Kelly loved you.

  6. I am 84 years old & read your blog every evening. It is the only one I read. Not being able to read your blog would be like losing a good friend & life just wouldn’t be the same. You are very much appreciated & I urge you to keep blogging even if it isn’t daily. You are one of a kind.

  7. Al, whatever you decide I just want to say it's been great reading your blog for many years. If you stop or slow down, you have the right to. Just know you have been the light at the end of the tunnel, well the end of my day for years. Thanks for all the great photos and blogs. Vern @ Boise

    1. Agree 100%. The world we live in nowadays needs a blog like yours. You're the first or second blog I look at each day.

  8. See, Al, you keep lots of boats afloat! Maybe not fair for you to have that responsibility, but you surely shouldn't ever feel that you are not needed. Fun seeing I am in the company of several in the same boat! In the 80's, live alone, put your blog in first place.

  9. I know both sides of the story and I look at your inspiration for getting me involved in Blogging. I know how time consuming it is. Someday I know that we all have to slow down. Since we share our lives with everyone, it gives them something to live for. They live their lives through our adventures, to the point that it becomes an addiction. Though you are not traveling, to others it is something they can appreciate. The best you can do, is to give them a slow withdrawal.
As everyone suggests, take a break when you need and only Blog two or three times a week.
    Stay Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  10. Yours is the first blog I read every evening. I think it's in part that us old guys need to hear from someone that is also experiencing this aging thing.

  11. Your blog is one of the few left that I read . I admire you for continuing but I do understand but please don’t stop. Just take a break . Get yourself another pet. You give us older people something to enjoy by posting all your pictures of the scenery and the wildlife. I have enjoyed your blog for a long time.

  12. I quit my job a few times in my life, thinking well, that's enough of that. (I was trained in and did the same work in different settings.) And turns out after a while,it wasn't enough to not do it. I'm not talking $$ here...Anyway, I went back. So you can do what suits you. I suspect those of us who read your blog will survive. I've had bloggers die on me, and I'm still around though it can be like losing a friend in a way. Seems you could take a break, or post less often, or go cold turkey. See what happens. Or for pete's sake, get a dog. So I've taken a lot of words here to repeat what others have said.....

  13. At a gathering of RV folks, if one mentions "Al Bossence" or "Bayfield Bunch", many of their faces show very positive recognition. An objective conclusion from this, is that you are the leading RV blogger in the country, even if you seldom go RVing lately. Please listen to your audience and carry on your blog. If any given day, or stretch of days, doesn't provide enough content or inspiration to fire up your muse, that's OK. We, your fans, are happy to wait for things that you want to write about.

I found your blog through RV Sue and have enjoyed reading ever since…Your photos are fantastic and I quite enjoy your sense of humour.
I think you should do what is best for you and if that means giving the blog up, so be it. Just know, you will be missed.
You could try a weekly blog before giving it up completely.

  15. Oh Al, please say it isn't so.... Your nightly blog posts are looked forward to and enjoyed each day. I love your excellent photos, your words, the gallery and your view of your area and surroundings. I sincerely hope that you won't lock the door and will be back with renewed vigor so all of us will not be sad each evening.

  16. As a very long-time reader I truly understand your feelings. Writing daily requires a lot of work because you include so many other things. Perhaps change from daily to weekly or even monthly but we'd still like to know how you're doing occasionally. You are certainly allowed a vacation! Don't go cold turkey! I know you will do what's right for you, alone.

    1. Al, if you shorten up the contents, perhaps it will be less of a job, thus will be more enjoyable-less stressful. It's just a suggestion amigo.💐

  17. Another dog would be a great idea. It would give you some companionship and also a source of photos and stoeies of your adventures.

  18. DO.NOT.QUIT. PLEASE? Your photos alone often make my day!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I start my day with you, Al. Agree with the above, shorten it up, take time off, get a dog. I beg you to please, please don't just stop and leave us all wondering like RVsue. She left it open so people could comment but she didn't even say goodbye, yet it is open. Nobody can figure why she did it that way or won't even comment. Maybe it was the addiction that Rick above talks about. The internet is a HUGE time suck. Our countries are addicted and look at the mess. I do believe people turned to blogs as a way to shut out the garbage/noise/propaganda the media pushes. The media has, however, shined a light on the evil of man/media. Nature is the antidote. Turn it off, go outside, hug a tree. Just be careful out there.
To any bloggers out there, if you become unable or die, would you PLEASE have a plan for a family member or someone that knows, go into the comment section and leave your readers that awful information so we can pray, send condolences, say goodbye, before the blog crashes from it's owner being gone.

  20. Count me among the throngs who hope you continue to entertain us with your daily missives and your photographic journey through Huron county. Hopefully you'll miss it as much as we'd miss you and you can continue to be our Bayfield, and area, eyes for years to comes.

  21. Please continue with your blog. You are the last connection to a best friend. I enjoy pictures of Kelly. The second member of the three muskateers passed in May so your blog is a great source of filling a big vacant space in my life. Even your occasional bit about her children is important to me.

  22. Ron and I hope that you continue your blog. Every day we begin our day with your amazing photos and jokes and your perspective on life. It is so important during these difficult times in our world. We certainly understand that you have to make the decision that is best for you. Thank you for all that you've given us- Ron and Mary in TN

  24. I completely understand your thoughts, Al. But we're growing old TOGETHER, and of course we don't want to lose you and your wonderful musings. Perhaps consider writing only once a week...lots to write about then, I bet.
And here's hoping your hip gives you no additional problems...you've been functioning so well on that operated hip.
But like everyone else, I will accept whatever you decide to do. And simply want to thank you for everything you mean to me in my daily internet reading...you're the ONLY blog I read.

  27. When you were useing your RV, your Travel blog had no equal. Simply the best. As snow birds it became our one and only guide to our travels in the American South West. Weather it was burgers at Jilberto's, hiking Ghost Mountain, Cochise country and dozens of other adventures, we owe it all to Bayfield Al. My wife used to tease me and say " where is Bayfield sending us today". A great big THANK YOU for sharing all that info. When you stopped your travels my interest waned and I no longer became a regular reader. I really have no interest in a bloggers personal life, just as you would have no interest in my personal life. The usual ageing, grief, constipation, erectile dysfunction stories can get boring very quick. One final thought, a wise man once told me the best thing you can ever do is quit when you are at the top. the world is filled with people who stayed too long and then become remembered for their failures.

  28. After reading everyone's comments which have defined all my thoughts, I will add mine!. Soon to be 84! The loss of our dog, last October. The death this January of my DH of 63 years, who was a retired firefighter who had both hips replaced & dealt with Alzheimers at the last. Your sharing touches me! Love learning about your location, your photography, the jokes, your memories, the night sky, did that with our grandkids! Love the artwork! I, like everyone else appreciate you! Each day I come here, to read, laugh, cry and be inspired! Loved all the ideas mentioned by everyone. Understand, but would so miss you! Take good care of yourself! Bev!

    2. BEV --- Not sure - but I think only YOU can see "reply/delete" because as the author - only YOU can delete your comment (or Al). Or, you can reply to your own comment if needed. However, the rest of us can only reply - so that is what we see on everyone's comment except our own. Not sure - lol - but, I'm sticking with that.

  30. The masses have spoken:-))))) I don't know anyone else who does a daily blog, and I struggle with posting one every two weeks, so perhaps reducing your posting would give you the change you need while still giving you the record we and you rely on. I remember the blog helping get you through some slumps in the past years, and you may not want to lose that lift when you need it. In any case, don't go without saying good-bye. Your people worry you know.

  34. Understandably folks would surely miss your musings, Al. I agree with a couple of things said already. 1) Perhaps a weekly post would give you more news to write about and be less taxing and 2) get a dog and share that experience with all of us. Whatever you decide to do, thank you, for giving us so many hours of reading and wonder. You do you!

  36. I’m your neighbour and would miss your blog if you decided to quit. I hope you continue on, keep on keepin on. I think you look forward to it as much as your readers love to see it! You have a natural story telling and photographer talent! And I agree with one of the other readers, we know why Kelly loved you so much! Don’t quit!

  37. Writing a blog is work - even though you love doing it, it is still work and takes your time and energy. But once you have posted it feels good to have completed that post. It gives you boost. Al, it also gives all of us a huge boost to be able to read day after day something that you created. Even just one photo with the words " have a wonderful day " means something to each of us, your readers. So yes take a break and be sure to keep that door open, even a few inches. A crack is not quite enough. We need you and I think you need us. Blog when you have something to share. It needn't be on a daily basis, just on a whenever you feel like it. You have become part of our lives and we sincerely care about you. Please don't disappear. Please give us a verbal and or photographic treat now and again. With love and hugs, Contessa
