RV BLOG VISITORS & A FEW THOUGHTS ON RESPECT

DSC_0034

Another early 3 a.m. start to my day.  Hate when that happens but sometimes when I wake up in the night, that’s it.  I’m up to stay.  Sure makes for a long tiresome & sometimes grumpy day being up that early:((

JUST TOUCHING DOWN ON THE BIRDBATH FOR A DRINK OF WATER

Had an email from fellow RV Bloggers Chris & Caron at TRAVELS WITH CC & DIXIE Thursday saying they had just rolled into North Ranch.  It was Chris a few weeks ago who put me onto the BLACKRAPID RS-4 camera strap I like so much.  We have corresponded with these Ontario Canada folks on & off for about 3 years & it was finally nice to meet them in person here at our house this morning.  Pheebs was mighty happy they brought their dog Dixie as well.  Again, two mighty nice folks who have really logged a lot of miles in their Tiffin Motorhome from coast to coast in both Canada & the U.S.   They have sure seen & done a lot of things in the few short full timing years they have been on the road.  Nice genuine folks indeed & you can keep up with their travels on our sidebar.  They too will soon be heading home to Ontario.

TODAY’S COOL WINDS KEPT US INSIDE FOR A FEW HOURS

We are beginning to watch the weather across the country more closely now with our departure date looming in less that 2 weeks.  Not looking good for the most part but weather patterns are totally unpredictable these days & this year it is anybody’s guess which way the weather will swing in a couple weeks.  Our departure date is not set in stone & if we see the weather is bad we’ll just sit it out here in Congress & wait for things to clear.  It’s always a real gamble every year at this time trying to pack in 2,300 miles between Spring storm fronts.  It is one of the reasons we don’t dilly dally around anywhere.  We make the trip just about as quick as we can, while we can.

WE SURE HAVE ENJOYED OUR LEISURELY DESERT JEEP RIDES THIS WINTER

And it was one year ago today the fellas stuccoed our house.  It was a Friday & I had my work cut out for the week-end.  I had to water the house.  In order for the guys to begin painting on the Monday it was important the stucco be watered 3 times a day for both Saturday & Sunday.  Tough job but somebody had to do it.  I was Okay with that because I like watering stuff…..but a house.  An old gardening habit I guess.

I have the Spell Checker enabled on my blog & it is extremely rare when I hit the ‘Publish’ button for my post to immediately publish without first finding my usual spelling mistakes & purposely bent words.  But Friday night’s post had no delays.  Not even a purposely bent word or two.  Very rare indeed for me not to have some spelling mistakes.  But here’s the sad part….I have a tendency to spell the same words wrong over & over.  Direct result of a poor short term memory.  Give me a word I’ve never heard before & chances are by sounding it out I might even be able to accidentally spell it right.

Occasionally I write things that may not sit well with some folks &I think it’s something Bloggers do from time to time.   I, like many others am an opinionated person & some times my opinions spill out into my blog.  Sometimes it is in the form of a rant, sometimes an observation, & sometimes it is just simply my passion for something.  Could be my love for dogs, an RV lifestyle, thoughts on photography, music, maybe a movie, annoying television shows, etc.  Could be why I like button up shirts compared to T-shirts.  Or shoes compared to sandals.  I, like many of my fellow Bloggers write about our daily lives & what is going on in those lives.  What we’re doing, what we’re thinking, where we’re going & where we’ve been.  I also have a tendency to write about my feelings.  Some Bloggers take it a little beyond that & get into some of the hotter topic issues like Politics & Religion but that’s not for me.  I just don’t have the personality or the interest to get involved in that kind of head butting.

MANY MYSTERIES & LEGENDS HERE IN THE SOUTHWEST AS AN OLD WOODEN FRAMED BED LIES DETERIORATING INTO THE DESERT FLOOR

I have read many, many, blogs over the years & have left many many comments on people’s posts.  Especially in the first few years of my blogging.  I’ve read many things I didn’t agree with.  Seen language I didn’t like & topics I didn’t much care for.  Some blogs just simply didn’t hold my interest & I moved on.  I read blogs I am interested in & do not read people’s posts with the sole purpose of finding fault & being openly critical of them.  If I don’t like someone or their writing style I simply move on.  I’ve never felt a need or felt it right to go on a fellow Blogger’s site & leave demeaning, bitter, rude, & sarcastic comments whether using my real name, Anonymous, or as in some cases, phony names & alias’s.   For the most part we have a great bunch of blogging folks out here in our little community.  Most are understanding of each others writing styles, likes & dislikes.  We may not agree with each other all the time but at least most of us are respectful of each others thoughts, interests, opinions, & personalities.

After Friday mornings encounter with the 2 dead Rattlesnakes and with Pheebe’s safety foremost in our minds we have decided not to do any further desert walks, hikes, Jeep rides, or rock scrambles now that the hotter weather is upon us.  In Wickenburg on April 13th they have a Rattlesnake awareness & training program for dogs but we will be gone by then.  Had we planned on staying longer we would have enrolled her in that awareness program for sure.  With the combination of hotter weather & Rattlesnakes now it certainly is a big concern to all pet owners.

WHAT’S LEFT OF AN OLD WINDMILL STANDS QUIETLY IN THE DESERT BACKGROUND

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Two silver-haired women entered a restaurant for lunch.
Each caught the other's look of joyful recognition--having been college mates 50 years earlier. They spent the afternoon laughing and reminiscing.
Then one looked at the other in obvious embarrassment. "I hate to say this," she confessed, "but what is your name?"
The other one thought a moment, then asked ruefully, "How soon do you need to know?"

I WAS ONLY ABOUT 10 FEET FROM THE RATTLESNAKE WHEN I SAW IT….BUT SOMETHING DIDN’T SEEM RIGHT

DSC_0051
Always like how the Moon casts it’s desert shadows.  A stroll with Pheebs through our little Cactus garden Thursday night sadly reminded me I have only a couple weeks to enjoy the crystal clear starry skies here in west central Arizona.  Back home at our digs in Bayfield Ontario the sky is obscured by tall Pine trees all around us.  One can only catch fleeting glimpses of the night sky through the Pines.  A few stars, a shadowy Moon maybe.  We will not likely see another fiery sunrise creep up over the horizon until we are once again on the road headed south in the Fall.  Sunsets, sunrises, & big mountain edged starry nights are only a few of the many reasons we like it so much here in the southwest & fortunately we are far enough away from any large light polluting cities & urban areas to spoil our nightly starry sky views.

FAIREY DUSTER
Rather than our usual morning walk we decided to Jeep ourselves out to the desert & explore another area we hadn’t been in before.  Loaded up Rascal Buns & we were off on another soothingly calm Arizona morning.

PHEEBS HAS HER OWN BED IN THE BACK OF THE JEEP BUT SOMETIMES JUST LIKES GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL TO DO A BIT OF DRIVING HERSELF
Jeep roads are everywhere in the desert disappearing into sandy washes, over rocky ridge lines & into the tall greenery of Saguaros, Ocotillos, Mesquite & Palo Verde trees.  One just has to pick a road & follow it as far as one’s adventuress imagination will take them.  Ambled up a dusty rock strewn rut infested chunk of trail this morning not far from our familiar House Rock in the vast desert area behind our house.  Parked the Jeep & headed out on foot up a ridge.  As always here in the Sonoran desert it only takes a few feet of altitude for the landscape to change & just keep on changing.  Once off the flat desert floor we began getting into Ocotillo’s, Agave plants, Saguaros, & a host of flowering shrubs, blossoming flowers, & blooming cactus.  It was 8 a.m. & the low morning Sun tumbled long cactus shadows across the desert floor & beyond.

The thought of Rattlesnakes, especially this time of year is always on my mind & that is why we try to get out early in the morning while the night’s coolness is still upon the desert rocks & sand.  Best to hike on the shady side of the rock formations rather than on the already warming sunny side.
DSC_8827
I didn’t see the Rattlesnake just about 10 feet to my right.  And there was a reason I didn’t see it.  It never moved & it never rattled.  It was dead.
DSC_0025
IT WAS THAT CURIOUS LOOPING TWIST IN THE SNAKES BODY THAT SEEMED ODD
I have seen live Rattlesnakes in captivity but none in the wild as yet.  Had never seen a dead Rattlesnake before & here was my first one.  Except there was something strange about what I was seeing.  Approaching slowly it looked very long to me.  As I drew closer I could see it had suffered severe head trauma, but there was something odd about the way it was laying there.  The other end of the snake was unrecognizably mangled as well.  I hollered for Kelly who was a couple hundred yards away pursuing an old dead Agave stock.  Pheebs in the meantime kept a safe distance just in case.
DSC_0026
Standing near the snake taking a few photos I still could not figure out a curious looking configuration about two thirds the way along the snakes body.  When Kelly got there she carefully poked her Agave walking stick about the spot where the confusing part was.  When she slowly pulled the snake’s body back a few inches……we were in for a surprise.  Under that curious twist in the snakes body were two rattles.  That could only mean one thing.  We were looking at two snakes.  Peering closer I suddenly realized the tails of the Rattlesnakes were joined.  The mystery of that curious twist was solved.  They had obviously been killed at the same time while mating.  There was no other trauma to either snakes body.  Just the mangled heads.  With that mystery solved, it immediately led to another one for which we have no answer.  What killed both Rattlesnakes basically at the same time, in the same manner, in the same place?  I’m guessing the snakes may have died sometime late Thursday afternoon. We continued our walk with a heightened sense of awareness.  The early morning views across the sweeping valley floor from our elevated position on the ridge were awe inspiring.  Totally alone & at one with Nature.  The little town of Congress was far distant on the horizon & barely visible enough to interfere with the desert stillness.  Their were photographs everywhere & I knew for every photo I took, I had missed a thousand.  These are the moments special memories are made of.  And this morning………we made a few more.

On the heels of Nina’s posts on Bisbee Arizona, Mark over at the BOX CANYON BLOG follows through with his own take on Bisbee.  Turns out the WHEELING IT folks were in Bisbee the same time as as the Box Canyon Blog folks but never the twain did meet.  Both these Bloggers are fine writers & photographers & both do a mighty fine job capturing the ambience of a little town Kelly & I have come to love over the years & visited many times.  In fact, this is the first winter in 6 years we have not been to Bisbee Arizona.  To experience Bisbee proper one has to get their boots on the ground, their heads into exploration mode, open their minds to the sights, sounds, & colorful characters around them & take the time to experience what it is all about.  Bisbee is much, much, more than walking through a few trendy shops along main street.

I’m writing this paragraph at 5:25 a.m. Friday morning.  Two weeks from now about this time we will probably be somewhere north of Congress Arizona in the first hour or so of our long journey home.  How long it takes us to get there will depend on weather but usually it is about a 6 day journey.  And it’s not an easy journey.  But a journey nonetheless & I’m always happy to be on the road going somewhere.  Whether we will stick to our quickest way home route or not remains to be seen.  We do have a habit of sometimes changing directions in mid stream.  Peter & Bea from AMERICAN TRAVELER currently on their even longer journey to the east coast have had to take a slight jog southwards because of cold & snowy weather along their path to the northeast.  We may have to do the same if these current winter-like weather patterns do not smarten up!!

Ever wonder why some men grow beards.  Think I read somewhere it comes from prehistoric times before the invention of razor blades.  It seems men also grew (& still do) beards to make themselves look fierce & intimidating to friends & foe alike.  Nobody in their right mind wants to mess with anyone who looks fierce & intimidating, right.    I grew my beard to hide my chin.  So much for ancient beard theories.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Grandma was making her very first flight aboard a plane from L.A. to New York.
They had only been in the air for a few minutes when she complained to the stewardess that her ears were popping.
The girl smiled and gave her some chewing gum, assuring her that many people experienced the same discomfort.
When they landed in New York, Grandma thanked the stewardess. "The chewing gum worked fine," she said, "but tell me this... how do I get it out of my ears?"

A NICE ‘HAPPY HOUR’ FINISH TO AN OTHERWISE DULL DAY

DSC_8813
THINGS ARE BEGINNING TO BLOOM & GROW IN THE DESERT
Wished there was something worthwhile I could tell you about the majority our day but their isn’t.  If the day had gone any slower it would have been going backwards.
---
However there was a highlight this afternoon & it involved a ‘Happy Hour’ from 4 to 5.  Many years since we’ve dropped in for a happy hour anywhere but today that is just what we did.  And we took the Sunseeker:))
---
Mike & Pat McFall live over at North Ranch which is only a few miles from us.  I have been re-miss in getting over to say Hello all winter & it was weighing heavy on my mind.  Fact is I’m more than a little re-miss at dropping around to see most anybody.  My fault, not theirs.  Mike had mentioned a month ago about wanting to have a look at the Sunseeker so this afternoon we drove on over for a visit.  We knew Mike & Pat host happy hours from 4 to 5.  Their friends Larry & Jerri were there as well.  Larry & Jerri had just dropped around to see us here on Ghost Town Road last week.

MIKE CHECKS OUT SOME OF OUR STORAGE SPACE
I liked Mike & Pat from the first time I met them over a year ago.  Mike’s one of those big easy going guys who makes you feel right at home.  He’s the kind of fella you can clown around & kibbitz with & I like that.  I’m an old kibbitzing kinda clown guy from way back myself & it’s nice when people I feel comfortable enough with enable me to reach inside & haul that kinda goofy fun character out of myself again.

PAT SAYS, “WE REALLY MUST BE THINKING ABOUT DOWNSIZING” & MIKE LAUGHS SAYING, “WHATEVER YOU SAY DEAR”
Had ourselves a little tour of the Sunseeker & a second tour of Mike & Pat’s big beautiful Foretravel Motorcoach.  We could easily park our Sunseeker in their living room.  Very impressive to say the least.  We will be heading back over to Mike & Pat’s again before we pull out for home in a couple weeks.  Pat said she’s gonna hold me down on the ground & make me eat a Shrimp!!  Yousa, yousa, yousa:((

I THINK KELLY’S GETTING A LITTLE TOO COMFORTABLE THERE IN THAT BIG RIG
IMG_0877 IMG_0879
SURE IS A NICE COACH THESE FOLKS HAVE & I LOVE ALL THOSE REALLY NEAT-O ROUND GAUGES ON THE DASH
All my frustrations & rants with that miserable MAGNADYNE radio in the Sunseeker has finally been justified.  Kelly, on-line this morning with the Forest River forum & several other forums found out those Magnadyne radios are not good pieces of equipment.   Just as I thought!!  I know a bit about sound quality & no matter how much I tweaked the equalizer settings on that system I could not get the quality of sound that radio should have produced.  People said Forest River installs good speakers but the sound quality problems lie within the Magnadyne radio itself.
---
But it isn’t just the sound I do not like about that radio.  As already mentioned, there’s all that finicky touchy feely hard to see screen crap.  There is one whole forum dedicated to complaints about those Magnadyne touch screen radios.  People have been dumping their Magnadynes & replacing them with the much superior & user friendly Kenwood radios.  Same features like DVD, Sirius, Blue Tooth, GPS, iPod, etc. etc.  And here’s the best part.  Kenwood’s have volume control knobs & push button controls integrated with the touch screen technology.  Yes, yes, yes, real knobs again:))  People in the forums have raved about excellent sound quality & ease of the Kenwood radios operation.  Also the brighter much easier to see screen.  Are we considering swapping out the Magnadyne for a Kenwood?  Yes we are but it’s just not in the budget this decade.  And you know, I like it when I complain about something & I actually turn out to be right about whatever it is I am complaining about.  Yep, I like when that happens a lot:)))))))
IMG_0883
NICE CACTUS BLOOMS IN MIKE & PAT’S FRONT YARD CACTUS GARDEN
While researching that radio stuff this morning Kelly did come across a few other Forest River features we were not aware of.  The Jenson television is wired into the radio system letting the television play through the rig’s sound system.  Another yes, yes, yes.  As reader’s know I have long complained about the crappy tin can sound of television speakers.  DVD’s in the radio can also be seen on the overhead television as well.  Nice:))  And in another unrelated feature we found out there is a switch operated battery pack thingy under the driver’s seat to start the Chevy engine in case batteries are accidentally drained.  A nice safety feature.  That under seat battery pack can also start the generator if coach batteries are drained as well. Double nice & I am sure there are other Sunseeker features we haven’t even come across yet.

NICE TO SEE THE MESQUITE TREES BEGINNING TO LEAF OUT
Were you lucky enough to have been born with a happy face? Open-mouthed smile  I wasn’t, I was born with a face that would make a Gargoyle nervous.  It’s all in the Genes I guess.  My Dad had a stern looking face & his Dad had a face that could cause an earthquake to change it’s mind.  I remember as a little Tyke being so afraid of my Grandfather on my Dad’s side.  He had a head of snowy white hair, red ruddy complexion, & a look & stare that could punch a hole through solid granite rock. And, he had a temper to match that look too.  I just shook in my little socks every time I saw him.  My Dad & his two Brothers inherited that look as well & a slightly toned down version of it has been past on to me.  It was not uncommon over the years for people to ask me, “what are you mad about”?  I could be bubbling over with joy about something but my face would never show the bubbles.  My stern stony face easily conjured up descriptive words like, mad, grouchy, PO’d, angry, bored, grumpy.  No wonder I referred to myself as a Cursmudgeon in later years.  I looked & still do look the part!!  Yes, I know there is no ‘s’ in Cursmudgeon but it’s just the way I like to spell it & think of myself:))
---
As a small kid in my home town of Tavistock Ontario I hung around with another kid called Doug Brenner.  Doug had a big round toothy grinned happy face.  He was one of those kids you saw coming a mile away because his face looked like a big beaming ball of bright sunshine & he lit up the whole neighborhood.  I was so discouraged with myself every time I looked in the mirror & seen this skinny slab of drab plain wood looking back at me.  I wanted so much to have a Doug Brenner face & be popular like he was.  He attracted people, I scared them away.  I even tried propping sticks in my mouth to stretch my face into a big smiling circus clown face.  But alas, nothing ever worked.  I was stuck with my face & that’s all there was to it.  In fact I’m still stuck with my face & I can see a part of my Grandfather’s stern look in every photo I see of myself.  I can be standing there with what I think is a big smile hanging on my face & yet the photos show nothing.  Not even a smirk.  Always that same blank stern look.  Maybe it’s about time I get me some Ocotillo branches & try that sticks in my mouth thing again.  I wonder where Doug Brenner is these days.  Bet he’s just beaming his way though life as always…..

AND THIS IS ALL JUST A BLOCK BEHIND OUR HOUSE:))
GROANER’S CORNER:((  A woman turned to her husband and said, "Next week is our 30th wedding anniversary. What do you think we ought to do?"  Her husband thought carefully before giving his answer. "Have a moment of silence?"
