WE HOOKED UP OUR 4G MILLENICOM JET- PACK TODAY & WHAT A FABULOUS BEATLE TRIBUTE IT WAS ON TV SUNDAY NIGHT…..JUST THE BEST:)))))))))))))))))

DSC_0003

A FEW MORE PHOTOS TODAY FROM OUR NEIGHBOR’S FLOWERING CACTUS GARDEN

Just as some days I have no idea why my energy levels drop I also do not understand other days when those same energy levels spike.  How come we can’t have ‘spiky’ days every day.  Only thing to do on low energy days is to ride it out & the only thing to do on the spike days is just go with it & get as much accomplished as possible without ask any questions.  My ‘spike’ level washed the whole darn Winnie Wagon this morning.  Sure had a lot of powdery Arizona desert dust to get off & out of it.  Warming temperatures are upon us & with today’s sunshine I think they both came together to give me the ‘spike factor’.

AND BY GOLLY IT’S EVEN SO DARN SHINY I CAN SEE REFLECTIONS:))

Tracking data showed our new Millenicom Jet-Pack was in & sitting at the Congress Post Office.  Kelly & Pheebs jeeped on over there & picked it up this morning.  Within half an hour Kelly had us switched over from Verizon to Millenicom.  And none to soon because we were once again over our 10 Gig Verizon limit with another 8 days to go.  We have put Verizon on a 90 day hold just in case we are not satisfied with Millenicom.  We now have a Millenicom 4G Jetpack which should speed our internet up for us when traveling but being in a 3G zone here in Congress we probably will not see much if any jump in speed.  But we have 20 Gigs now for less money a month than Verizon.  Why we dragged our feet on this decision for so long I have no idea.

OUR 4G MILLENICOM JETPACK SITTING IN OUR WILSON SLEEK

Having never even graduated from High School I probably do not have any room to criticize or question why highly paid & well educated engineers would ever design toasters with power cords at the front end of them when the electrical wall plug is behind the toaster.  In my little world it just seems to make more simple sense to put that cord at the back of the toaster….& maybe add an extra foot of length to that short cord while they’re at it.

DSC_0012 DSC_0013

BOTH OUR TOASTERS HAVE CORDS INCONVENIENTLY LOCATED AT THE FRONT

Compared to a week ago at this time there isn’t a lot for me to write about.  Or maybe it is just that I am not always able to motivate myself into writing mode.  Either way or for whatever reason, it is just the way it is sometimes.  Like I have often said, there is always something to do or write about if one can just inspire one’s self to simply get at it & do it.

SUNDAY LAUNDRY

Well wouldn’t ya know it………I had just finished my above paragraph when the CBS 50th Anniversary Beatle special came on.  Well, that sure gave something to write about right quick.  Oh how I soooooo much enjoyed this show.  All the performances were just great & I heard some new artists I had never heard before.  The fellow who sang ‘Let It Be’ just did a fabulous job on that song.  Oh how nice to finally see true & raw talent again in these performers.  Not only the singers but the all the instrumentalists as well.  And all the people behind the scenes who put this Tribute together.  Loved the guitar work between Keith Urban & the other fellow.  And again the voices & the harmonies.  Great to see Joe Walsh from ‘The James Gang’ & the ‘Eagles’ still going strong & able to once again bring a crowd to it’s feet.  Loved that ‘Magic Dragon’ group.  And of course Paul & Ringo.  What a great job the two of them did on their individual songs & how wonderful it was to see them again on stage together.  They brought the house down & finished the show so memorably with Paul McCartney’s, ‘Hey Jude.’  How refreshing, how encouraging, & just how swell it was to see this great well done Beatle Tribute. Music performed by old & new folks the way it was always meant to be heard & the way I remember it best.  Ahhhhhh, the magic of it all:))))))))))))))))))))))))))

DSC_0002-005

And do I remember where I was 50 years ago Sunday night?  Sure do.  It was a cold winters night in February & I was with friends at a cottage in Port Frank’s Ontario.  Myself, Jim & John Eifert, Craig Wilker, & Gary Burton, who’s parents owned the cottage, had just spent a few days at the lake.  We were all in front of the black & white television watching Ed Sullivan & waiting for the Beatles to come on.  We had packed Gary’s Dad’s car for our hour drive back to Tavistock Ontario but delayed our usual early departure to wait & see what all this Beatles fuss was about.  I can still remember the excited feeling that came over me watching John, Paul, George, & Ringo.  We were all music loving guys but we had never seen or heard anything like what we saw & heard that night.  It is a memory & a feeling that will stay with me forever……..

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A Few Thoughts on Politics:

- Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are not smart enough.

- Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.

- A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country.

- One politician offered his opponent a deal: "if you stop telling lies about me, I will stop telling the truth about you".

- Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other.

- We hang petty thieves and appoint the great thieves to public office.

- Now and then an innocent man is sent to the legislature.

- Although he is regularly asked to do so, God does not take sides in American politics.

- In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.

- In democracy it's your vote that counts;
In feudalism it's your count that votes.

- The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.

KIND OF A LONG DAY….TIRED

IMG_3619

Every morning I sit in my Ikea chair, laptop on my lap, heater going, & soft music on my Sirius Satellite radio boombox beside me.  A day’s quiet beginning works best for me.  Greatest start to the day though is what I see on my bed.  A little Pheeber dog all curled up with her head on my pillow.  Sometimes she has some big upside down stretches going on, other times she twitches & whimpers as Bunnies chase her through her dreams.  Quite often she will have one of her toys beside her & other times she snorts a wee bit, her nose twitches, & her tail gives a little wiggle.  How truly fortunate I am to have such a great little Pal start each & every one of my day’s off with a little snort, a nose twitch, & a little tail wiggle………………….

---

We had ourselves a long day & I’m really tired tonight .  Let me just keep it short by saying we were down bombing around in the northwest end of Phoenix for a few hours.  Hit a Target store in Surprise on the way back along with a stop at 5 Guys Burgers.  And I never did find any PJ’s…………

TAKING THE SLOW ROAD with Dawn & Jim are our latest friends checking in on our ‘Blog Followers’ list.  Happy to have you folks along.  It’s an exciting time pulling dreams & plans together.   Wishing you all the best & hope you wind up with many great traveling days ahead of you.

---

I did watch Jay Leno’s last show a couple night’s ago & for me that ends an era that began many, many, years ago with Johnny Carson.  Rare for me to watch the whole show but I did always enjoy the monologues.  For me both Johnny & Jay’s humor was simple, easy to follow & easy to understand.  Unlike the new breed of late talk show hosts.  NBC turfed Jan Leno for the newer humor so prevalent in situation comedy’s & younger talk show hosts these days.  We one time cutting edge Baby Boomers are the aging Dinosaurs now & as per human trait it is out with the old & in with the new.  I’ve tried watching John Stewart & that other Gilbert Report guy or something like that but they all leave me sitting poker faced.  I just don’t understand their humor.  Jimmy Fallon will be taking over the ‘Tonight Show’ from Jay but again this is another fellow, although talented, I have just never thought of as funny.  I just don’t get the humor or understand the style of these new newer age comedians.  Simply put….I just don’t find them funny.  I was once a ‘Saturday Night Live’ fan but that show left me in the dust a long time ago as well.  And there isn’t one newer single TV situation comedy that grabs or holds my attention for any longer than a few seconds either.  I guess in some areas of my life I am just not changing with the times like I once did.  And maybe that is a good thing in this day & age for this old lumbering Tyrannosaurus Rex…………

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A traffic cop pulled alongside a speeding car on the motorway. Glancing into the car, he was astounded to see that the young lady, who was driving, was knitting.  Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the policeman wound down his window, turned on his loudspeaker and yelled, 'PULL OVER!'   'NO', the young lady yelled back, 'IT's A SCARF!'

‘CANADA DAY’ AS WE MEET OUR CANADIAN NEIGHBOR & A SURPRISE VISIT FROM A COUPLE OF GRAND BEND CANADIANS:))

DSC_0099

JUST SAVORING THE MOMENT

We had us a light rain in the night & I knew that right away when me & my nose stepped out the door this morning.  After a rain the desert takes on an unmistakable sweet smell & it is the Creosote bushes which are mainly responsible for that

DSC_0551

<<< A TALL YUCCA FLOWER IN THE KOFA MOUNTAINS

Under cloudy skies with cooler temperatures again but the weather forecast is for a clearing beginning Saturday with big bright blue sunny skies next week & temps up into the low, mid, & upper 70’s.  About time I’d say because I’m really needing to change up my grumbling from cool & cloudy to hot & sunny.  Actually the skies did begin to clear early this afternoon & we didn’t end up with too bad a day after all.  Hardly even worth me complaining about it.

DSC_0657

The dust has pretty much settled from our Kofa trip now so it’s on to whatever is happening next which at the moment is not too much.  Like Peter over at AMERICAN TRAVELER said in his post this morning, “Doin’ nothin’ is boring”.  So with that thought in mind I’m going to have to come with something to keep my otherwise idle mind occupied.

DSC_0133

And come up with something I did.  The Jeep was so full of desert dust I had no alternative today but to get the hose & bucket out & give it a wash.  Cleaned up the interior & glass as well.  It’s almost looking too uncomfortably shiny now.

DSC_0002

FOR THE REST OF THE DAY I THOUGHT SOMEBODY HAD PARKED A NEW JEEP IN OUR DRIVEWAY

On our walk this morning we noticed someone had dug up a bunch of Aloe Vera plants & chucked them over the fence by the road.  I wasn’t long in getting back there with the Jeep to load em up.  Planted them this afternoon.

DSC_0003

Kelly knew of half a dozen garage sales in Congress this morning so wanted to check them out.  I went along to drive the get-a-way car.  Sometimes I’m in the right mood for garage sales but mostly I’m not.  This morning was a not so stayed in the Jeep at each stop.  Kelly’s total haul was a small plastic lunch cooler & that was it.

DSC_0001

IT HAS ALWAYS BOTHERED ME TO SEE DOGS IN THE BACK OF PICK-UP TRUCKS

Met our Canadian neighbor Mike for the first time today.  He is the fellow who owns the house & property behind us where I have been cleaning things up a bit.  He & another fellow had shipped their Harley’s from Alberta to Las Vegas & then took a round about bike trip here to Congress.  They had rolled in last week while we were over in the Kofas.  They headed back to Vegas today & will fly from there back to Alberta.  Nice couple of fellows.

DSC_0005

And what a great surprise this afternoon when our good friend Ron Krauter & wife Jan dropped in.  Fellow Canadians, they hang out over in Scottsdale for the winter but Ron had to come over & look at a car for sale in Wickenburg.  Ron & Jan live in Grand Bend near us in Bayfield.  Ron owns & operates FOUR SEASONS PERFORMANCE & that is where we bought our Damon Challenger Motorhome back in April of 2007.  Just a super guy.

DSC_0009

I probably should have explained what a ‘3 zone’ Class A Motorhome floor plan is in Thursday’s post.  The most common Class A floor plan has the living room, dining area, & kitchen all in one large space.  A 3 zone coach has the living room separately located behind the driver’s seat with the kitchen & dining room together in a their own separate area in the middle of the coach.  A short hallway on the rear side of the kitchen leads to the bathroom & bedroom. In effect 3 separate zones.  Advantage of this is the kitchen separation between living room & bedroom which can be a good thing when 2 people need separation due to sleeping habits.  One person may require total silence, complete darkness, & no disturbances while sleeping & the other person may be a late nighter watching TV, listening to music, or practicing the scales on a Saxophone.  Of course this leads up to MERIKAY'S comment question…"Is there some thinking about trading in the Winnie in the air”?  Well maybe someday we might consider doing that but for the time being we just plan to hang tight & Winnie our way along:))

DSC_0560

A reader asked about one of my camera straps.  My BLACKRAPID RS-4 camera strap is a beauty & as soon as I hung my Nikon D-40 & heavy 300mm zoom lens on it a year ago I was pleased as punch.  Best & most comfortable camera strap I’ve ever had & I never leave home without it.  Well Okay, sometimes.  What I like is that I can easily swing it out of the way behind me.  It hangs in the same area of my right hip as a 6 gun would (not that I even have a six gun but I’ve watched lots of movies) & I can easily grab it & swing it up into place for quick photos.  Because the strap anchors itself in the tripod mount hole the camera & lens have a tendency to hang with lens pointing down to the ground instead of sticking out & catching on stuff.  This is great for hiking, rock scrambling, or squeezing through narrow places or underbrush.

AND I HAVE MY HAT ON THE RIGHT WAY FOR THESE PICS TOO

DSC_0017_thumb[1]

I LIKE HOW CONVENIENTLY IT RIDES ALONG ON MY RIGHT HIP

We will probably head out one of these mornings & see if we can find the location of the WICKENBURG MASSACRE.  Have a good idea in what area to look so the challenge will be in finding the site itself only about a dozen miles South-West from our digs here in Congress.

DSC_0058-002

And in the morning we’ll head on down to the big mall megopollis of Surprise Arizona.  I’m needing new PJ’s & of course Kelly has a list of things to look at as well……

THINK I MIGHT HAVE MY GOLD MINE MIX UP MENDED

DSC_0141

KOFA BUTTE

Definitely colder here in Congress than it was south of Quartzsite the past week.  A heavy cloud cover prevented old Sol’s warming rays from putting happy weather smiles on our faces today.  Think we got up to 51F.  We pretty much had to run our heaters in the house for most of the day & I wasn’t inspired to putter away at any outside projects.

A DISTANT DRY WATERFALL WHICH WILL BE A TORRENT OF WATER IN THE MONSOONS

Les dropped over while we were away & put our new wood garden shed doors on.  How nice to be rid of those old bent & twisted noisy aluminum doors that rattled in the wind & clattered every time they were opened or closed.  I just need to throw a coat of outdoor protective paint on them & they will be all set.

DSC_0068_thumb[1]

Pheebs is sure glad to be home again stretched full out on her couch or on my lap in the recliner.  She can now jump up on my bed again for scruffles & she loves trying to turf me out of bed in the morning.  It’s very crowded in the Winnie with the 3 of us all scrunched up on the short sofa.  Difficult for me to write & edit photos with no space to set cameras or use my mouse.  Tried reversing the front seat for awhile but that proved uncomfortable after a short awhile as well.  So it’s nice to be home & s t r e t c h out.

COUNTLESS MILES OF DESERT ROADS TO EXPLORE OUT HERE IN THE GREAT SOUTH-WEST

I am in agreement with Nick’s latest post in BAD NICK'S BLOG.  Looks like the majority of comments are in agreement with him as well.  Always encouraging to know there are other folks out here living in the real world & seeing things for the reality they unfortunately are.

DSC_0633

Curious to know if any RV readers have a Class A Motorhome with what is known as a 3 zone floor plan.  This is generally a mid door entry coach with separate bedroom & bathroom in back, separate kitchen in the center & separate living room up front behind the driver’s area.  Gulf Stream has this plan in some of their Sun Voyagers.  Just curious…………..

DSC_0123-001

With Ann’s note in the Shout Box I think my confusion has been cleared regarding my mixed up mine dilemma.  There is a third mine in the Kofa Mountains we did not know about.  And this one comes with a cemetery so you know we would have been over there had we known about it’s existence.  It is called the King of Kofa Mine & after receiving an email from a reader today with the GPS co-ordinates to the cemetery I was amazed at just how close to that cemetery we really were when we reached marker 21 & turned around.  Also learned the buildings we saw near the 2 mines are what is left of the Kofa mining town.  Ann said a mine caretaker lives there now.  Also some additional info from a friend near Sierra Vista helped as well.

THIS IS WHERE THE MINING TOWN OF KOFA WOULD HAVE BEEN LOCATED

I have always thought anytime one mixes the desert with water it can make for some nice photos.  Could be a water hole somewhere, a river, a lake, or even a puddle in a rock crevice.  Just think what dusty & weary desert travelers must have thought when coming across any source of water after long days on the trail.  There are a few fellow RV Bloggers out here who travel with canoes & kayaks out here in the desert regions.  Bob over at BOB'S EYES is one.  JUST WANDERIN is another one.  SUE has a Kayaking hobby as well.  And remember to keep an eye on John over at JUST FINDING OUR WAY.  He is one of those clever innovator fellows who is right now working away at building a kayak.  He just recently finished helping a friend build a Dory & if you backtrack John’s post you can follow that project.  For all you ‘do it yourselfers’ out here it would be a good idea to keep track of John’s posts to see what innovations he always seems to be up to.  Whether his RV or whatever……

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Murphy's wife borrowed his car and parked in the supermarket car park. Just as she came out laden with shopping, she saw a young lad break into the car, hot wire it and drive off.  Naturally she reported the matter to the police.' What did he look like?, the sergeant asked.  'I don't know she replied, but I got the license plate number'.

OH HOW I LOVE MY STEAMY LONG HOT SHOWERS IN A SPACE LARGER THAN A SHRUNKEN BROOM CLOSET……..

DSC_0532

I am really, really, really, really, going to try & write a shorter post tonight with a whole lot less pictures!!  Many photos taken this past week didn’t make it into my posts simply because there was not enough room for them so I’ll include some of those over the next little while such as the one’s below.

 DSC_0548

MORE PETROGLYPHS TO THE UPPER RIGHT OF THE GRINDING CAVE

We picked a good day to head back to Congress.  Had us a cloud cover overhead again so it wouldn’t have been a good photo morning anyway.  Just as well though because I am needing a photo break.  With Tuesdays photo load of 253 pics it took me a long time yesterday to get through & edit them all.  And with a slow internet connection at our Kofa location it took so long to publish my post I fell asleep & had to restart the post when I woke up this morning.  After 5 days of jostling Jeep rides, rock scrambles, hiking, & hours of photo editing, we really needed to head home for some R&R.  Loved every minute of our time away though:))

DSC_0058

We rolled out of our Kofa campsite about 8:30 a.m.  We knew GEORGE & SUSIE were camped somewhere close to JEAN & SKIP south of Quartzsite in an area we used to boondock a few years back but it’s a big place & we decided not to drive through there looking for them.  Besides 8:30 in the morning is not the time to unexpectedly go knocking on someone’s door scaring the Holy Ba-Jeebers out of them.  It is still possible for Seniors like ourselves to be in various states of grumpy fog at that hour.  Could be dangerous so  with a nod & a wave we motored on by heading north on 95.

DSC_0173_thumb[1]

THANK YOU KOFA & CASTLE DOME MOUNTAINS FOR ANOTHER GREAT HEAD FULL OF UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

After our usual McDonalds pit stop in Quartzsite for a grease job & coffee we were eastbound on I-10 for home.  Fifteen minutes out of Q we turned northeast on highway 60 for a relaxing hour & a half drive to Congress.  I love heading home just as much as I love leaving home on our boondocking adventures.  Best part of getting home is always that long shower in a space larger than a shrunken broom closet complete with an endless supply of steamy hot water:))  But you can bet that for sure next month at this time I’ll be chomping at the bit to be on the road again heading somewhere for more boondocking, writing, & photo adventures.  Wouldn’t have it any other way……:))

A CLOUD SHADOW DRIFTS LAZILY ACROSS THE DESERT FLOOR

Thanks to good friend & Kofa Refuge host Ann for pointing out the endangerment of the Bat species due to the White Nose Syndrome.  We were unaware of that & had no idea entering a mine shaft could be detrimental to Bats.  Wonder if the Kofa personnel have thought of putting wire fencing across those entrances two thirds up keeping people out but allowing Bats to still enter & exit through the top third.  Maybe a ‘No Trespassing’ sign with an educational explanation of why.  And thanks to Ann again for leaving this explanation in our Shout Box regarding the Bighorn Sheep butting & pawing at that Barrel Cactus.  Ann says…."Regarding the desert Bighorn Sheep and the Barrel Cactus. The Bighorn can go up to a month without drinking water. On a regular basis they will use their horns to knock over the barrel cactus; they eat the cactus for its high water content”.

DSC_0505

Also regarding another question about the mine site my uneducated guess about hazardous material in the those mine tailings is ‘probably yes because Cyanide was commonly used in many mine operations in the processing of mine contents.  I think it’s safe to say those tailings probably have been through some kind of chemical process.

DSC_0502

CLOUD SHADOWS PLAYING IN THE KOFA MOUNTAIN RANGE

Another good friend & reader down around that there Sierra Vista place pointed out I had mis-identified the King Of Arizona Mine.  I poured over some internet maps this afternoon plus my Benchmark Atlas & the Kofa brochure map we were using.  Both the Kofa map & my Benchmark Atlas point to the King Of Arizona mine where I identified it.  The internet map indicated this same location was the ROB ROY MINE.  Being familiar with the road layout between the North Star Mine & the other mine (both within site of each other) in question tells me the King Of Arizona Mine & the Rob Roy mine are both one & the same mine.  Maybe Kofa Refuge hosts Ann & Bill could clear up the confusion for us………..

DSC_0008 DSC_0010

LEFT IS THE KOFA BROCHURE MAP WE WERE USING & RIGHT IS MY BENCHMARK ATLAS…BOTH SHOWING NORTH STAR MINE & KING OF ARIZONA MINE ABOUT A MILE & A HALF APART…THIS MAP PLACES THE ROB ROY MINE SITE IN THE SAME LOCATION…….??

Wasn’t until I was editing some photos a couple days ago that I saw I had once again done something really, really, dumb.  I am going to go as far to say I just may be the only one who has ever done this for an entire day.  Or maybe this is just common for us wannabe Cowboy guys.  Sure shoots holes in my dusty trail weary Cowpoke status though.  It was the day we went to Yuma & it was the day we met SASSY.  Kelly had taken some photos of Sassy & I.  I thought something looked odd about my hat in the pictures.  I enlarged one of the photos Kelly took when I had my back to the camera & DAM!!  Would you believe I had my hat on BACKWARD!!   Yep it’s true & I had it on all day that way.  No wonder those Senior Walmartians were trying to run me out of the Yuma Walmart store with their carts Monday.   And then I meet a well known fellow RV Blogger for the first time & have my hat on backwards.  Sometimes I just don’t know about myself.   Had a similar thing happen the first time I met DESERT DIVA a couple months ago in Borrego Springs.  Had a shower that morning & put on a clean shirt.  And as is so typically me I then went outside & moved some big soot covered fire pit rocks around.  Front of my shirt was dirty & I didn’t notice it.  Can only imagine what Desert Diva thought when she met me.  Slob!!

DSC_0104-001 DSC_0101-001

I NOTICED IN THE LEFT PHOTO WITH SASSY MY HAT TOP LOOKED TOO HIGH…YEP, RIGHT PHOTO SHOWS MY HAT ON BACKWARDS ALRIGHT

So now that we have been out on our third boondocking venture with our Winnie Wagon how are we adjusting to the smaller living space of a 26’ Class C from a 33’ Class A.  Well I would really like to tell you that we think it’s the Cat’s Meow & we’ve never adjusted to any one thing better & never been happier.  However…..I can’t tell you that.  We have us a great little rig here but we’re kinda feeling like a couple of aged Dinosaurs in a Volkswagen Beetle.  Never thought for a minute I would have any trouble getting in or out of that bunk over the cab but then again I never thought for a minute I was 69 years old either.  My recent tumble out of that bunk awhile back reminded me that despite what I think, I do not have the agility of a teen-ager anymore.  The on-going Arthritis problem in my legs is slowly gaining ground on me.  No problems with our coach whatsoever.  The problem is us & our desire for more livable & more comfortable space.  Yes I know we do not spend as much time in our rig as we used to so why are we still finding the desire for more space?  It’s an age old RVing topic with many pros & cons, thoughts & opinions of course & it just depends on what order one has their own priorities prioritized.   Does this mean we are in for another change somewhere down the road?  Not necessarily.  These are only thoughts, not plans.  And we all know how we RV’ers think about things a lot…………

GROANER’S CORNER:((    A policeman stops Mavis just outside the city of Tucson Arizona, and asks to see her driver’s license.   He says rather peremptorily, 'Lady, it says here that you should be wearing glasses.'

Mavis promptly answers sweetly, 'Well, I have contacts.'

The policeman replies gruffly, 'I don't care who you know, my dear. You're still getting a ticket.'
