A BIG COOL DOWN AS WE SEARCH FOR WILD BURROS BUT STUMBLE ACROSS RUIN AND DECAY INSTEAD

THE CONSTELLATION ‘ORION’ IS AT TOP RIGHT
Had my camera all set up for some night action in the sky and waited for the U.S. Air Force to show up with their jets and flares.  Nothing happened, they didn’t show up.  No planes in the sky darting about amongst the stars.  Waited and waited……then it dawned on me.  It was Friday night and the start of the week-end.  Of course there were no planes in the air.  Who wants to work week-ends anyway and those pilots and all the support staff deserve their week-ends off.

MY CAMERA AND TRI-POD SET UP FOR A TIME EXPOSURE
It was such a beautifully warm night Friday I probably stayed outside for well over an hour.  Took a few photos and tipped myself back in my gravity lounger with binoculars in hand and traveled myself around the dark starry night sky.  Star gazing on a warm night is so much better here in the Southwest as opposed to a warm night back home when one has to constantly contend with bothersome mosquitos,  During winter months in the Southwest there are no bugs in the air and that makes it so much nicer to be outside day or night.  Plus with no humidity in the air here  night skies are so much clearer.

Winds came in the night to flap our awnings causing Kelly to pull her bedroom slide in.  Air was cooler this morning and the winds made it cooler but no matter, it was better than hot so out the door we went in search of some wild burros reportedly around the south end of Darby Well Road.  Well, we never did see any burros but did see lots of fresh evidence we had just missed them.  Ann and Bill had commented about the new solar powerd water trough there so we stopped to have a look at that.  Great idea for the burrows and other dry desert dwellers.  We were heartened to see a humane effort being made to help these poor creatures in this bone dry arid land.

DSC_1284On our walk we also came across a few other things along the way.  Here in the mountains and deserts of the south-west it is not uncommon to come across things that mankind has left behind.  Could be a couple days ago or could be a hundred years ago.  It so often seems where human beings have come together at some time in the past they have had a habit of leaving behind whatever it is they don’t want.  And so it was again this morning when we wandered into what once may have been some kind of mining operation.  What we saw is very typical Of the way things were left or abandoned years ago.  No regard for the land or safety of animals or people.  Projects were simply walked away from leaving the grounds cluttered with junk.  To add to the mess these places are often taken over by homeless people and the trash and litter simply continues to grow.  Once again I have way too many photos to put into one blog so I hope to stretch them out over the next couple posts.

It was a comment in our Shout Box by Mark Watson that cleared up a mystery for me.  Ever since arriving in this area at the beginning of the week I have noticed something in the night sky that has left me puzzled.  A wide cone of faint light stretching up into the night sky from a point in the West.  I had never seen anything in the night sky like this before.  Mark said in his comment, ‘Al, I think you captured the zodiacal light in one or two of your night time photos.’  And with that comment my mystery was solved.  Zodiacal Light is explained as, ‘a faint elongated cone of light sometimes seen in the night sky, extending from the horizon along the ecliptic. It is thought to be due to the reflection of sunlight from particles of ice and dust within the plane of the solar system.’

And another Mark (Box Canyon) from way over there in that Colorado place inquired about the camera and settings I used to take Friday’s post lead photo showing the Organ Pipe cactus at night.  Okay here goes….Nikon D7200 with an 18 to 300mm Nikkor lens.  Photo was taken at 18mm wide angle - F6.3 – 1600 ISO – Spot Metered with a manual 10 second exposure.  Using my flashlight I flashed the Organ Pipe and foreground for maybe a second.  Took me 3 tries to get that flashlight exposure half right.  I actually met Mark two years ago at Bloggerfest 2016.  I’ll include links to my 3 posts from that event and Mark is the tall fellow with a blue T-shirt and ball cap.  When I found those 3 posts I noticed a few photos of fellow RV Bloggers who are no longer with us anymore.  There they were full of life that day………………….
Bloggerfest 2016 Part 1 and Bloggerfest 2016 Part 2 and Bloggerfest 2016 Part 3
A few days later I expressed a few feelings about Bloggerfest and towards the end of my paragraph it was Mark from Colorado I was talking about.  Here is that paragraph:: ‘Now that the dust has settled from Bloggerfest 2016 & my nerves are once again relatively intact I’d just like to say how nice it was re-connecting with old friends & meeting a few new ones along the way.  Only unfortunate part was not being able to take time to chat longer with people but at least initial contacts were made & that’s what Bloggerfest is all about.  I was a bit overwhelmed by some of the nice things a few folks quietly said to me and I so much appreciated their kind thoughts and meaningful words.   I’m afraid I am not a relaxed or confident conversationalist when meeting new people and it was apparent to me while talking with a fellow RV Blogger Saturday when I found myself stumbling for the right words in response to his kind and complimentary words of encouragement, gratitude, & understanding.  I just didn’t know what to say.  Maybe one day we will meet again at another time and another place.  May those long Colorado mountain trails always be with you my friend:))’

After our morning’s explorations we headed back to the rig.  Kelly hasn’t been feeling well for awhile and I asked her this morning if she thought we should maybe head for home.  Her answer was typically Kelly,  ‘No, If I’m going to continue not feeling well I would sooner not feel well here where it’s warm and sunny rather than at home where it’s cloudy and cold.’   We’ll see how the next little while goes………..

GROANER’S CORNER:(( A young Technician and his General Manager board a train headed through the mountains on its way to Wichita. They can find no place to sit except for two seats right across the aisle from a young woman and her grandmother.   After a while, it is obvious that the young woman and the young tech are interested in each other, because they are giving each other looks.   Soon the train passes into a tunnel and it is pitch black. There is a sound of a kiss followed by the sound of a slap. When the train emerges from the tunnel, the four sit there without saying a word.  The grandmother is thinking to herself, "It was very brash for that young man to kiss my granddaughter, but I'm glad she slapped him."  The General manager is setting there thinking, "I didn't know the young tech was brave enough to kiss the girl, but I sure wish she hadn't missed him when she slapped and hit me!"  The young woman was sitting and thinking, "I'm glad the guy kissed me, but I wish my grandmother had not slapped him!"  The young tech sat there with a satisfied smile on his face. He thought to himself, "Life is good. How often does a guy have the chance to kiss a beautiful girl and slap his General manager all at the same time!"

"C'mon, tell me," Tom asked for the thousandth time, "how many men have you been with?"  "Baby, " she protested, "If I told you, you'd throw a fit." TOOK MY TIME TO TAKE SOME NIGHT PHOTOS THEN ACCIDENTALLY SCREWED MOST OF THEM UP THURSDAY NIGHT

DSC_1119

I ILLUMINATED THIS ORGAN PIPE CACTUS WITH MY FLASHLIGHT DURING A 10 SECOND EXPOSURE

Our night skies were very busy a couple nights ago and I counted 7 blinking lights on the move over the Barry M Goldwater Military Range to our north.  Those blinking lights of course were U.S. Air Force fighter jets and I suspect they were F-16’s.  A-10 Warthogs, F-18’s, F-35 Lightnings, and AV-8B Harrier Jump Jets also fly these area skies.  The pilots Tuesday night were busy twisting and turning through the night sky in mock combat maneuvers.  Bright yellowish amber flares could be seen hanging in the sky in various locations.  I saw 6 flares in pairs of two slowly drifting to earth.  The Jets were far enough away that I only heard a few short occasional low rumbles.  We did have 3 A-10 Warthogs go over Thursday afternoon in a straight line a few thousand feet up.  I’m guessing they were headed from Tucson to Yuma.  Usually they are seen low to the ground in this area dodging about through the surrounding mountains and hills.  No double sonic  booms from the daytime F-16’s yet though.  When those sudden sonic booms happen once in a long while it’s as if someone set off a couple sticks of TNT about  6 feet behind ya,  Makes one jump  about 6 feet straight up right out of their shoes.

I did get outside Thursday night for awhile with my camera but the night sky was quiet.  Did manage a few photos though.  Unfortunately through carelessness on my part I lost most of them when I pulled the camera chip out of my computer too soon which screwed up the up-load.  Oh well more starry nights ahead.

Sun was already hot by 8:30 on our morning walk so we knew it was going to be an uncomfortably hot day.  Luckily temperatures are due to take a big drop Saturday so because of that we’ll stay put for awhile.  Had the hotter weather continued we might have pulled up stakes and headed for cooler weather somewhere north of here like maybe Joshua Tree National Park.    Looking ahead a couple weeks we’re seeing temps in the low 80’s for Yuma so  we’ll not likely be headed that way.  Looks like I might have to wash our rig myself when we get back to Canada after all.  Best temps ahead of us for now and the next couple weeks are in Borrego Springs California so that may very well be our next stop along the way whenever.

Despite today’s hotter temperatures we are sure lucky to be where we are.  Reading some RV’ers blogs from Quartzsite this morning Kelly said it looked really crowded over there with maybe a record number of people milling about.  Long line-ups for rigs waiting to dump their tanks and take on water and it seems the availability of water has already become a problem and the main event hasn’t even happened yet.  Kelly and I were a part of all that years ago having attended our first frenzied Quartzsite experience in January of 2007.  Despite my complaining about the crowds and traffic we did manage to return again 3 or 4 times over the next few years.  We generally boon-docked about 6 miles south of Quartzsite but even that far out we were still surrounded by RV’s everywhere.  And a lot of big groups making big group noise.  Quartzsite itself is a quirky little town out in the middle of  kinda nowwhere and I-10 runs right through it.  I like the dusty little town but not in January when thousands upon thousands of RVer’s descend on it for the big RV meet-up.  There are many good things to say about the big gathering if you like that sort of thing but for Kelly and I we’ve done our time there and have no urge to immerse ourselves back into all that hoopla in the desert again and I’m sure their are a number of folks crowded into the desert over there right now who would love nothing better than to get away from the masses and enjoy the peace and quiet Kelly and I are enjoying over here near Ajo in the serene and tranquil setting of the Sonoran desert.  Looking back I’m glad we did our Quartzsite thing years ago but it’s not very likely we’ll ever do it again.  Enough was enough.  Think I’ll go slip outside under the shade of our awning and let the surrounding silence envelope me while I enjoy our beautiful desert surroundings not marred by the hubbub of thousands of RV’s all around us.

Because of the heat we stuck close to the coach where it remained cool inside for most of the day.  With windows and door open we had us a nice cool breeze blowing through and were only bothered by the heat from 2 to 4.  Thankfully by late afternoon Mother Nature switches on her A/C and we quickly cool down.

A RATHER RELAXING DAY AT OUR HOUSE

A big thanks to commenter Mike for allaying my fears we might have to get ourselves a whole new ladder for our rig  We’ve been able  to find a few ‘how to replace that bolt’ articles on-line as well.  And while I’m at it a big thanks to all our blog reader’s, commenters, Shout Box folks, and Facebooker’s for still sticking with us over the years.  All you people sure do got some great fortitude going for yourselves and let me say once again, if it wasn’t for all of you reading the blog there would be no reason for me to write the blog or head out each day looking for new photos.  It is people like you who give people like me a purpose.  And of course thanks to Kelly for keeping the blog technically going despite Blogger, Verizona, and Open Live Writer problems from time to time.  Without Kelly figuring out and correcting the problems there of course would be no blog because I simply do not have her patience, resolve, and determination.  She’s got the ‘smarts’ and I’ve got the ‘falling aparts’.

She replies, "Fine, I need a seven-ten cap for my car." The man asks," A seven-ten cap? Where does it go, I've never heard of such a thing?"  The blonde angrily replies, "It goes on top of the engine and don't thinkj ust because I'm blonde I don't know what I'm talking about!!" Perplexed, the parts man asks if she would draw him a picture and maybe help him out in figuring out what it is she needs.  She wrote the number 710 in the middle of the paper and drew a circle around the whole number.  Still confused the part’s man looked at it then turned the paper around.  ‘Aha’ he said, so that’s what you need……………………

WE ARE STILL HAVING BLOG PROBLEMS SO THIS POST IS KIND OF A TEST TONIGHT

DSC00327

MORNING WALK

Kelly worked a long time this morning on the ‘403’ error problem that prevented Wednesday’s post from publishing.  After a frustrating time she simply copy and pasted the whole post pictures and all into a new ‘Open Live Writer’ and that worked but we still don’t know what caused the error message in the first place or if it’s even fixed.  i also noticed the post structure was not the same way I had set it up when it posted this morning.  I’m going to write a short post tonight with only a few point and shoot photos and see what happens.

Nice warm sunny day and we hung out around the coach.  Sure are enjoying all the peace and quiet.  Except for an occasional vehicle going by slowly on Darby Well road or maybe a jet flying by once and awhile high overhead the air is so quietly still it’s hard to believe there is a a whole world of human noise going on out there.

I did crawl up on the roof this morning and clean our 4 solar panels and 2 skylights which were all very dirty.  Probably my last trip up there for awhile since I noticed one of the ladder’s anchor points to the coach is broken.

Cheryl Ann asked if we were going to Congress Arizona and my answer to that is that we have no plans to head on up that way as of yet.  We just spent 5 years enjoying that great area in the winter months so maybe we will give it a rest for a couple years before wandering back that way sometime in the future.

Okay so let’s see if this post will publish!!

YES THERE IS A KELLY IN THIS PHOTO

GROANER’S CORNER:(( Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway. But, as time went by, the traffic slowly built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.  So one day Farmer John called the sheriff's office and said, "You've got to do something about all of these people driving sofast and killing all of my chickens."  "What do you want me to do?" asked the sheriff.  "I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers!" So the nextday he had the county workers go out and erected a sign that said:SLOW--SCHOOL CROSSING
Three days later Farmer John called the sheriff and said, "You've got todo something about these drivers. The 'school crossing' sign seems to make them go even faster."  So, again, the sheriff sends out the county workers and they put up a newsign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY
That really sped them up. So Farmer John calledand called and called every day for three weeks. Finally, he asked the sheriff, "Your signs are doing no good. Can I put up my own sign?" The sheriff told him, "Sure thing, put up your own sign." He was going to let the Farmer John do just about anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain.  The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John.Three weeks later, curiosity got the best of the sheriff and he decided togive Farmer John a call. "How's the problem with those drivers. Did youput up your sign?"   "Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been killed since then. I've got to go. I'm very busy." He hung up the phone.  The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to himself, "I'd better go out there and take a look at that sign... itmight be something that WE could use to slow down drivers..." So the sheriff drove out to Farmer John's house, and his jaw dropped the moment he saw thesign. It was spray-painted on a sheet of wood:
NUDIST COLONY
GO SLOW AND WATCH OUT FOR THE CHICKS
