LAUNDRY AT THE PALM CANYON RESORT AND UNBEKNONST TO WE FELLOW CANUCKS THE CANADIAN AIR FORCE WAS IN TOWN

DSC_1817

THE RED STAR LAUNDROMAT IS PART OF THE PALM CANYON RESORT WHERE I TOOK A BUNCH OF PHOTOS THIS MORNING

Had ourselves a pile of laundry built up so decided to head on into town early and deal with that before the day heated up and roasted us.  Beautiful morning of course as we headed in to Borrego Springs.  Traveling around the north end of Christmas Circle a slight westerly breeze brought us the wonderful aroma of freshly mowed grass and we could see the Circle had just been mown.  We were the first ones at the laundromat along Borrego Springs scenic main drive and as usual hardly any traffic along the way.

THERE IS ALSO AN RV PARK HERE

While laundry was churning we took ourselves for a walk around the beautiful looking Palm Canyon Resort complex.  One would never guess they were in a desert setting with the way this resort is laid out.  There is an RV Park at this complex as well.

KELLY BLACKBERRIED ME IN FRONT OF THE LAUNDROMAT

While at the laundromat we met a nice couple from South Dakota.  They were Archeologists and after looking at Steven’s card I had to look up on Google what Paleolithic Research meant. Said they had a 10 acre property in SD and we were welcome to stop in for a boon-docking stay anytime.  Not likely we’ll make it to South Dakota again but one never knows.  Pheebs got along well with their dog Molly.  Nice folks with a Michigan connection going a long way back.

The days are very hot here right now so after laundry we headed straight back to the rig and sat outside in the shade trying not to exert ourselves in the heat.  I was in the direct line of the Sun’s rays while setting up our Shaw satellite dish and the heat almost knocked me right into the middle of next week.  At least there is no humidity in this heat and that of course is a big plus.  I remember as a younger fella liking hot days but those times are long gone.  We might have to head ourselves off to higher elevations with cooler weather soon because these mid 80 temperatures are here to stay for the next couple weeks.

REFLECTIONS OF SELF

DSC_1798

Okay so where the heck are we anyway.  I’m sure some have already figured it out.  Chris was close when he guessed Tamarisk Grove at the junction of Yaqui Pass Road and highway 78.  That’s about 7 or 8 miles west of where we actually are.  Coming in out of the desert Sunday morning to empty our tanks at Borrego Spring’s Legion with the intentions of heading east we ended up staying right here at the Legion.  We had seen RV’s in here boon-docking on the east side of the property over the years but hadn’t paid a lot of attention simply because we wanted to be out of town up high with great views all around.  Thursday, Friday, and Saturday we had that but for some reason it wasn’t working for us this year.  While doing the tanks Sunday morning we noticed a spot alongside a grove of Tamarisk trees that appealed to us.  We had a good feeling about the site so decided to stay for the night.  It’s a big dirt parking lot we’re in but so far we are all by ourselves and that works for us.  With the way we have our rig positioned our side door opens into a nice spacious side yard area under the Tamarisk trees.  We couldn’t believe our luck as we sat outside Sunday afternoon with no other RV’s close by.  For us, we had the best spot in the whole place.

HAD MEANT TO TAKE A FEW MORE PICS LIKE THE SHOWERS AND 30 AMP RV AREA BUT FORGOT.

So let me tell you about some of the benefits we have found boon-docking here at the Legion.  This is an active forward thinking progressive Legion chapter.  Nice building and patio with new cement walkways and a wheelchair accessible ramp.  Plans are in the works for a building addition too.  They have Sunday breakfasts and Wednesday is hamburg and hot dogs day.  In between they have special events like come on in and BBQ your own steaks, etc.  Food prices are very reasonable.  Brand new  free spacious shower area.  There are maybe a dozen cement RV pads with 30 amp service and water along a grove of Tamarisk trees on the west side of the property behind the Legion building itself.   Dump station is easily accessible for the biggest of rigs in the middle of the large dirt parking lot area on the east side of the building.  A recent concrete pad has been laid at the dump station for level tank dumps.  Two water faucets with lots of pressure. Having been in the Canadian Navy back in the mid 60’s I qualified as a Veteran so for us the dump facilities were $5 which included an overnight stay and only $5 a night after that and remember ‘free showers.’   Free dump for as long as we stay here as well.  Pet friendly and lots of doggy walking room on and off the property.  The Borrego Springs Legion is located at the very southeast side of Borrego far and away from housing and the downtown area.  A bit of traffic noise but basically we’re still out in the desert.  Don’t know why we didn’t clue into this place long before this.  But here we think might be the kicker for a lot of RV folks.  Don’t know for sure but maybe one has to be a Veteran to stay here.  Only guessing……

EVERYBODY RECOGNIZES THE PHEEBS:))

Sunday afternoon at the Legion there was a birthday party for a fella in his eighties.  Could see quite a few cars over by the patio.  They have a book exchange so Kelly walked over to have a look at some books.  The birthday celebration was a pot luck affair and folks were forming up a food line.  Kelly casually walked over and got herself in line.  I was back at the rig outside reading when I noticed Pheebs tail wagging and she set off around the corner of the Motorhome.  I walked over and there was Kelly coming across the large parking lot with two big plates of food.  Roast beef with potatoes and gravy plus an assortment of veggie salads, etc.  We sure had us a fine supper but here’s the first of two kickers……..No more had Kelly got back to the Motorhome when a man walked around the corner not far behind her and said, “are you the Bayfield Bunch”??  I replied “yes we are”.  He said, I recognized Pheebs when she ran out to greet Kelly”.  Think this fellas name was TJ from Texas and he had been over at that birthday party affair.  Now if that wasn’t enough, after we finished our supper Kelly went back to the birthday party which was just wrapping up and scored two pieces of the birthday cake……..Now  having told you the above I have to tell you this.  Earlier in the day a fella by the name of Bill who runs the Legion had told Kelly about the birthday party and said there would be lots of food there if we wanted to go ahead and help ourselves……so that’s what Kelly did:))

ENTRANCE TO THE PALM CANYON RESORT

The couple at the laundromat today told us the Canadian Air Force was at the Borrego Springs Airport and they had seen a big airplane in there.  They also said it had something to do with parachutists.  Forgot to go have a look at that on the way back to the rig but later sitting outside I heard the drone of a heavy multi-engined propeller plane overhead.  Looked like a C-130 Hercules and knowing the Canadian Air Force flys those I kept an eye on it.  Half an hour later through the Tamarisktrees  I spotted the big plane to the East fairly low making a steep bank to the right so quickly grabbed my camera and slipped through the trees to watch it as it moved away from me.  Then I saw something that looked like a second distant plane but there was somthing odd about it because it wasn’t flying like a plane and it was coming straight down.  Peering through my 300m lens I saw right away it was a single dark colored parachute and the person dangling under the chute appeared to have something dangling from him.  He/She was probably more than a mile away but through my lens I was able to follow the chute all the way to the ground where the person landed seemingly out in the middle of nowhere west of the Borrego Badlands.  Minutes later I saw a red pick-up truck heading across the desert floor in his direction.  Meanwhile I tracked the low flying Hercules which had turned and headed back to where I knew the Borrego Springs Airport to be.   Through my lens I watched it come in low and slow and land on the runway.  Below is a series of photos I took of all this.  Because of the looooong distance they are not the best but here they are anyway………….

Think we may have an engine battery problem in the Motorhome.  Battery barely turned over the engine last couple times and Sunday morning we had to use the rigs ‘Battery Boost’ system to start it.  We also have a rusty tailpipe hanging down that needs to be replaced too so we have to find us a garage type facility shortly and preferably in Arizona where things are cheaper than California.

‘OMG’ WOULD YOU BELIEVE WE JUST MOVED AGAIN TODAY FOR THE 4TH TIME!!

OUR ‘LATEST’ NEW SPOT…..AND WE HAVE TREES:)))))))

Sorry for more Motorhome photos tonight but I really didn’t get out to take many pictures of anything again today.  I seem to be in a bit of a photo fog at the moment which is kind of good I guess because I had been overloading my posts with too many photos lately anyway.

‘NO PHEEBS YOU WILL NOT LIKE SAURKRAUT’

Had the big wheels rolling around 9 this morning and headed into town to the American Legion on Borrego Springs Road to dump our tanks and take on water.  We had made the decision Saturday to leave Borrego and begin heading East.  Hard for me to explain why we made that decision but we did and for all intents and purposes we were on our way.  Borrego Springs has always been and still is one of the greatest areas for seeing and doing things in a varied awe inspiring landscape of beautifully enchanting mountains and deserts.  We probably have more great California memories here than anywhere else.  So why leave so soon??  Good question and after dumping our tanks this morning we seriously reconsidered our decision.

AND CAN YOU BELIEVE A TASTY OMELETTE, HASH BROWN, AND BISCUITS WITH GRAVY PLUS ORANGE JUICE, COFFEE, AND A FRUIT CUP FOR ONLY $6

Being the foot loose fancy free RV Snow Birds that we are and always have been not having any restrictions, responsibilities, commitments, or obligations we are often prone to whatever direction the mood of the moment moves us and this past week these moods and whims have been shoving us around pretty good.  We are in our 4th boon-docking site in 3 days so you can see how undecidedly restless we have been.   Not sure where we’ll be tomorrow but I can tell you one thing for sure and that is we are both feeling better than we were a couple days ago and I hope to have my writing and photo mojo back shortly.  In the meantime we’ll continue to lay low and store up us much stress free rest and relaxazion as we possibly can for now.  No idea where Monday night’s post will  be coming from but where we are right now is pretty darn cool and no doubt would surprise some readers.  More about that maybe tomorrow plus a funny happening and a blog reader recognizes Pheebs from afar.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  At the airport for a business trip, I settled down to wait for the boarding announcement at Gate 35. Then I heard the voice on the public address system saying, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Delta Flight 570 will board from Gate 41."  So my family picked up our luggage and carried it over to Gate 41. Not ten minutes later the public address voice told us that Flight 570 would in fact be boarding from Gate 35.  So, again, we gathered our carry-on luggage and returned to the original gate. Just as we were settling down, the public address voice spoke again: "Thank you for participating in Delta's physical fitness program.

DETERMINED TO HAVE US A RELAXING DAY WE ENDED UP MOVING AGAIN

DSC_1729

BORREGO SPRING’S CHRISTMAS CIRCLE DIDN’T LOOK QUITE AS NICE THIS YEAR WITH A NUMBER OF TREES RECENTLY TRIMMED WAY BACK

Hadn’t intended starting my day off with a burg and fries beakfast but that’s just what I did.  Hadn’t intended on going anywhere today either but we ended up taking the Jeep into Borrego Springs then coming back and moving the whole rig to a new location.

DSC_1739

NOT SURE WHAT THIS BIRD WAS AT CHRISTMAS CIRCLE BUT I LIKED IT’S CALL……MAYBE A MEXICAN BLUE JAY

Our Verizon signal which was poor at best continued to become poorer so we made the decision this morning to find us another location.  With Kelly’s Blackberry with us we set off in search of a better Verizon signal location and found one.  Decision was made to move but not before taking ourselves for a short Jeep drive into Borrego Springs and beyond first.

SATURDAY MORNING IN DOWNTOWN BORREGO SPRINGS CALIFORNIA

DSC_1735DSC_1737

Curious about how many boon-dockers were at Rock House Road we headed over that way for a look see.  Surprised to not see as many RV’s as as I had expected to see but once the Quartzsite fiesta wraps up I’m sure there will be a stampede of RV’ers back to Road House Road.  I’m guessing maybe 20 rigs in there now which could very well double by next week at this time,  Around the corner Peg Leg Smith’s boon-docking parking lot had maybe 10 rigs but they will soon be jammed up and jelly tight in there too.  A lot of Canadians seem to flock to Peg Leg.

Heading back into Borrego Springs we stopped at Jilberto’s where Kelly had a breakfast Burrito and I happily had my annual burger and fries,  I usually only ever drink one pop/soda a year and that is a tall cold glass of Root Beer at Jilbertos.  Great burg and fries and a super great Root Beer.

From Jilbertos we slipped over to Christmas Circle for a romp on the green grass.  That is also a tradition with us and we’ve been doing it for a long time now.  I haven’t taken my usual flood of Borrego Springs photos this time but in case anyone is interested just type ‘Borrego Springs’ into my blog’s Search bar at the top of the right hand column and that should bring up all my Borrego Springs posts and photos over the years.

It was late morning when we arrived back at the rig and right away set about packing things up for our next destination.  We were soon on the road and soon at our next spot setting things up all over again.  Our Verizon connection is much, much, faster and we have a better cell phone connection.  And not another RV in sight for as far as the eye can see.  We were soon  back into our recliners for a long afternoon’s rest.  Despite taking our reader suggested vitamins tiredness and lack of energy has been our biggest bug-a-boo so far this trip plus Kelly is experiencing some of her liver disease related symptoms so for now we’re just hanging out, keeping a low profile, and taking things one day at a time.

"I want them to say, 'She certainly looks good for her age.'"

Y’ALL HAVE YOURSELVES A GOOD DAY AT QUARTZSITE’S BLOGGERFEST TOMORROW

DSC_1727

Winds continued through the night but with our slides pulled in and the slide toppers not flapping we finally had  us a better night.  Winds continued through the morning but at least our day dawned sunny and clear.  Verizon signal is still a bit sketchy but better than where we were a few hundred yards away Wednesday night and Thursday morning.  My ‘catch-up blog finally posted this morning and for me that started the day off on the right foot finally.

THIS KIND OF SUMS UP MY DAY

DSC00389

Kelly headed into Borrego Springs around 9 to do some browsing at her favorite places and I chose to stay put at the rig with Pheebs.  I’m still not feeling my normal self and figured it was better for me to hang around the rig.

DSC_1719

DSC00391Fried myself up a big bowl of porridge and it was well after 10 before I gathered myself together enough energy to slip outside and do a few things.   Mat down, chairs out, a few small tables set up, etc.  Beautiful scenery all around but my heart still wasn’t into it.  Seem to have an overall tiredness weighing me down.  Dust gathered on my cameras, cob webs thickened in my mind.

DSC00393

I THINK SOMEBODY FELL ASLEEP OVER THERE

Winds subsided by mid morning and left us with a nice moderate temperature day.  Relaxed with the coach door open and tipped back in my recliner with a warming sun on my left shoulder and favorite tunes helped a bit but feeling oh so tiredly drained.

DSC00392HEY DAD HOW’S ABOUT A TUMMY RUB

Temps came up enough to sit out in the shade so I was able to spend some relaxing time with my Kindle.  Also browsed around in a couple of my Bench Mark Atlas’s.  I always enjoy looking at maps and Atlas’s.  Always a great way to look back on one’s life when all those old familiar names and places bring back so many memories of days and decades gone by.

THAT BLACK BLOMP ON THE DESERT FLOOR IS PHEEBS

Kelly was back by 1 o’clock with some groceries and a Burrito from Ilbertos which we split.  A relaxing afternoon for both of us sitting outside reading and soaking up some California sunshine.  Very quiet here so far and we haven’t seen a soul anywhere,  Some days I think we have it just too darned nice…………………

DSC_1723

It was later afternoon before I dusted off and dragged a camera out.  A few pics relaxing around the rig and that was about it for today.  Kelly hasn’t been feeling the best either so we have no plans to drive over to Quartzsite for Bloggerfest.  Maybe next year.  Y’all have yourselves a good time there tomorrow and remember to take lots of pictures……………….
