MIRAMICHI NEW BRUNSWICK TO ROCKY POINT PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND:: WE MADE IT ACROSS THE CONFEDERATION BRIDGE:))

DSC_0052

Not as cold as the night before and I stayed toasty warm.  We got to see a nice a Moonrise Monday night and Sunrise Tuesday morning.  Can’t even remember the last time that happened.

TUESDAY MORNING SUNRISE

It was 8:30 under clear blue skies we climbed back aboard highway 11 in Miramachi and wandered our way southeast.  Decided this morning it was Prince Edward Island we would head for and take in a little sightseeing before incoming rains were upon us.

A LOT OF THESE LOW PROFILE BRIDGES ALONG THE WAY

Nice uneventful drive all the way down to a place called Port Elgin New Brunswick.  Sure a lot construction going on north of Shediac and it was a real dog’s breakfast threading our way through all the twists and turns and detours.  It was only by sheer luck that we kept on making the right turns at the right time or we may very well have ended up in a farmer’s corn field somewhere.  On the western outskirts of Port Elgin we pulled into a little Park by a river for a leg stretch. Kelly pulled out some pots and pans, boiled us up some scrambled eggs and fried us a coffee.  It was 10:45 Atlantic time and skies were slowly beginning to cloud over.

AN OUTSIDE BREAKFAST THIS MORNING >>>>>

One hour later we approached the curved, 12.9 kilometre (8 mile) Confederation Bridge which is the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water.  One of Canada's top engineering achievements of the 20th century.  Fifteen minutes later we were atop the bridge and nearly half way across to Prince Edward Island.  Clock said it was 12 o’clock right on the nose.  High Noon.  Before us Prince Edward stretched out far on both sides with low gently rolling hills for as far as the eye could see.

Our first stop on the Island was the Information Center and we could right away see how nicely everything was laid out like a tiny village.  They had pulled out all the stops to make a great first impression on people coming to the Island.  Everything said ‘Welcome’.

NICE SPACIOUS INFO CENTER

DSC_0036DSC_0039DSC_0038

We decided to do the Island from right to left meaning from the Welcome Center we would head East and follow any roads that ran along the coastline.  Almost before we had left the Info center we found ourselves geographically challenged.  In other words, temporarily misplaced, but hardly lost.  No matter, after a couple U-turns here and there we finally got ourselves sorted out and away we went.  From Borden-Carlton we followed highway 10 through Cape Traverse, Augustine Cove, and Tryon.  From there highway 116 through Victoria, a brief stint on #1 then off onto highway 19 through Argyle Shore, Canoe Cove, Rice Point, Nine Mile Road, then all the way out to Rocky Point.  Most of these roads were good and some a bit choppy for a Motorhome.  We even managed us a stretch of good old P.E.I. red dirt.

DSC_0054

When I was last through these parts back in mid September of 1986 I had noticed there were no tourists anywhere and I was banking on that to happen again this time.  And it did.  It’s almost as if we have the whole place to ourselves.  No hordes of tourists anywhere and very few vehicles on the roads we traveled as we plodded along about 40 mph  through scenic rolling rural farmlands on the left and picturesque ocean bays on the right.  Some potato crops still in the colorful fields and if we saw one little white Church along the way we saw a hundred.

DSC_0053DSC_0056DSC_0057DSC_0055

It was around 2 o’clock when we saw a sign saying Rocky Point to the right so we swung down that road for a look see and came across a really nice Park.  Skmaqn-Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst  Discovered this is a very historical place pertaining to Canada’s early French and English beginnings.  Also discovered we were right across a large bay from the Islands Capital City, Charlottown.  What a lucky find this was for us and when Kelly asked inside the Park’s info center if we could stay the night the answer was ‘yes’.  So we did.  There are two paved parking lots here so we drove down to the lower one closer to the water.  Again, we were the only ones here.  Oh how we both love when that happens.

In case I have ruffled any feathers by my comment in Monday’s post saying, “I think it’s going to be awhile yet before we shake off this feeling of being in a foreign country” let me get things into perspective here.  Yes, as an observation that is definitely how we feel but let’s flip that coin over shall we.  Suppose it was a French speaking couple like ourselves traveling through Ontario, the Prairie Provinces, or British Columbia and they couldn’t understand English whether spoken or written.  Imagine them trying to buy a cup of coffee, ask directions, find a restaurant or even washroom.  Same thing would happen with them or us if we were in Germany, Spain, Mexico, or Russia.  Would they feel, like us, that they were in a foreign country??  Quite possibly I’d say.  Now let’s just drop this whole French-English thing shall we.

DSC_0001-002

Must say I am feeling much better tonight than Monday night.  I think all the past week’s driving caught up to me by day’s end Monday and had me down in the dumps.  I would probably do well to just push myself away from my keyboard when I’m feeling like that.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A man is driving down the road and his car breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, "My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?" The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, and even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound. A sound unlike anything he's ever heard before. The Sirens that nearly seduced Odysseus into crashing his ship comes to his mind. He doesn't sleep that night. He tosses and turns trying to figure out what could possibly be making such a seductive sound. The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, "We can't tell you. You're not a monk."Distraught, the man is forced to leave. Years later, after never being able to forget that sound, the man goes back to the monastery and pleads for the answer again. The monks reply, "We can't tell you. You're not a monk." The man says, "If the only way I can find out what is making that beautiful sound is to become a monk, then please, make me a monk." The monks reply, "You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of grains of sand. When you find these answers, you will have become a monk."The man sets about his task .After years of searching he returns as a gray-haired old man and knocks on the door of the monastery. A monk answers. He is taken before a gathering of all the monks. "In my quest to find what makes that beautiful sound, I travelled the earth and have found what you asked for: By design, the world is in a state of perpetual change. Only God knows what you ask. All a man can know is himself, and only then if he is honest and reflective and willing to strip away self deception."The monks reply, "Congratulations. You have become a monk. We shall now show you the way to the mystery of the sacred sound."The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says,"The sound is beyond that door."The monks give him the key, and he opens the door. Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone. The man is given the key to the stone door and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby. And soit went that he needed keys to doors of emerald, pearl and diamond. Finally, they come to a door made of solid gold. The sound has become very clear and definite. The monks say, "This is the last key to the last door."The man is apprehensive to no end. His life's wish is behind that door! With trembling hands, he unlocks the door, turns the knob, and slowly pushes the door open. Falling to his knees, he is utterly amazed to discover the source of that haunting and seductive sound...But, of course, I can't tell you what it is because you're not a monk.

CAMPBELLTON NEW BRUNSWICK TO MIRAMICHI NB:: A LEISURELY DRIVE ALONG CHALEUR BAY AND THE GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE

DSC_0010

ACROSS THE GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE LIES THE GASPE PENINSULA WHERE WE JUST CAME FROM

Kicked our morning off under clear sunny skies with temperatures hoovering just above the freezing mark.  Unfortunately our front furnace failed to ignite again but with our rear furnace working Okay it threw some heat into the front of our coach where I remained curled up in my recliner almost lifeless under a ton and a half of blankets and anything else I could throw on top of myself including the dog.

DSC_0001

IT WAS A FROSTY START TO OUR MORNING

DSC_0008

THESE ARE TIDAL SHORES AFFECTED BY THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

DSC_0009

We rolled out around 8:30 New Brunswick time and in the next few hours stopped at 4 different RV places along the way with all being the same result.  Nobody had time to look at our furnace, and they all said they were short staffed because it was Moose hunting season.  We also noticed Quebec’s long reaching influence here in northern New Brunswick as well.  We are still seeing many signs and store names in French.  Not all, but many.  If there is any English on the sign it’s generally at the bottom.  I think it’s going to be awhile yet before we shake off this feeling of being in a foreign country.

DSC00827

PHARMACIE WE UNDERSTAND BUT WHAT THE HECK IS THIS ABOUT COMING IN AND GETTING YOUR PNEUS LUBRIFICATED!!

From Campbelltown we ambled along at a leisurely pace following highway 134 along the shores of Chaleur Bay.  Hardly any traffic on this road and it was nice going through the tiny towns along the way.  Dalhousie, Charlo, New Mills, Nash Creek, Belladune, Pointe-Verte, Petit Rocher, Beresford, and Bathhurst.  We went right through all of them.  A very relaxing scenic sunny Monday morning drive.  Not so relaxing each time we stopped at an RV place and were told they didn’t have time to look at our furnace problem though:((

MOST ALL OF THIS POST’S PHOTOS WERE TAKEN FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT TODAY

It was early afternoon when we reached Miramichi New Brunswick and decided to call it a day.  Too tired to drive around looking for a Park or out of the way spot for the night we slipped into an easy Walmart right beside highway 8 and shut it down.  It was 1:15 p.m.

DSC_0017DSC00829

We have Prince Edward Island in our sights but with two days of rain headed into the area starting Wednesday we’re not sure how we are going to handle that.  We were hoping to have us a couple nice weather days on the Island.  I’m sure we’ll figure it out.

Had us a relaxing afternoon with warming sunshine pouring through the rig’s windows.   Pheebs and I had our afternoon walk and Kelly browsed around in Walmart for a bit.  Not feeling the need for a people fix I decided to forego the Walmartian walk-a-round.

IN MIRAMICHI WE CROSS OVER THE MIRAMICHI RIVER LEADING TO MIRAMICHI BAY AND THE GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE

DSC_0016

We have only been on the road little more than a week and already we both noticed how we seem to be tiring more easily than other years even though we are in no rush to be anywhere.  I dozed off right at my keyboard while typing this around 3 this afternoon.  Yes, there’s no doubt about it anymore………we will definitely be making changes to any future RV travels after we get home in another month or so.  Knowing for some time now our best long distance RVing days are behind us we have to adjust to a different way of doing things next year.  Probably a smaller RV with the idea of doing more frequent trips closer to home.  Looks like we might just have to get used to the darned old cold Canadian winters again too and that’s all there is to it.  Pheebs is really missing her morning Jeep rides……………..

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom."Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to Flight 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles. The weather ahead is good and therefore we should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now, please sit back and relax....AAHHHHH! ....DAMMIT!"The passengers sat in silence, waiting for terrible news. Then, the captain came back on the intercom and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier, but while I was talking, the flight- attendant brought me a cup of coffee and spilled the hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!"A passenger in Coach said, "That's nothing. You should see the back of mine!"

FROM QUEBEC’S METAPEDIA VALLEY TO CAMPBELLTON NEW BRUNSWICK:: A SHORT MORNING DRIVE, RELAXING SUNDAY AFTERNOON, AND A PROBLEM WITH OUR COACH’S FRONT FURNACE

DSC_0005

SHARING THE PASSENGER SEAT WITH MOM

It was a quiet moonlit night alongside the Metapedia River Saturday night.  We could hear the river rustling it’s way through a gentle section of soft rapids downstream as it slowly carves it’s way through the Metapedia Valley.  It was in this narrow picturesque valley with it’s high treed and and sometimes rocky sides we spent the night.

DSC_0001

It was under gray soggy skies we woke up to early this morning.  Hate to use the word cold but it was definitely cooler than cool.  Had the big wheels rolling shortly after eight. with a light drizzle following us all the way to Campbellton.  It’s a very scenic winding road all the way with towering hills and rock cuts along the way.  This section of road would be even more beautiful when Autumn displays all it’s fine colors in a few weeks.

CROSSING THE METAPEDIA RIVER INTO NEW BRUNSWICK

DSC_0007

NOW HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS READABLE TO US AND WHAT IS NOT

How nice to cross the Metapedia River into New Brunswick this morning.  The first road sign we saw we understood.  Yaaaay Team:))  Figured we’d find a McDonalds in Campbellton and use their free wiFi to post my Saturday post but the connection proved to be so slow and my post so big it may have taken a couple weeks.  Used our own Bell internet which we were able to re-establish again after leaving our overnight spot.  Grabbed a coffee to go anyway and headed off to a Walmart parking lot on the edge of town we had seen.  We have a nice spot away from the main lot with lots of greenery beside us.

DSC_0008DSC_0009

We are in a different time zone now so have moved ahead in time far enough to have lost an hour of ourselves somewhere between Quebec and New Brunswick.

ALWAYS NICE TO HAVE GREEN SPACE CLOSE BY

We have two furnaces in our coach covering both front and back.  Saturday night we noticed the front furnace was not working properly.  Fan would start up for about 10 seconds then shut off.  Furnace wouldn’t ignite.  Didn’t know what the problem was despite Kelly re-working all the thermostat controls.  Needless to say I had a cool night in the front of the coach.  Still wouldn’t work this morning when we tried it.  I of course immediately assumed the worst and figured we would need a furnace technician.  Or sell the Motorhome.  Kelly of course went to the furnace manual and began reading.  She also went on-line looking for a solution.  I opened the outside furnace exhaust door with a screw driver all by myself and we both had a look inside expecting to find either a Spider or Hornet nest blocking some stuff.  Nope not that  but saw a tiny red light blinking an error code.  Kelly did some more reading while I went out and shot a few good blasts of canned air into the exhust pipe.  Following another possible solution Kelly had all propane stove burners going for a minute or so.  Shut them off then tried the front furnace again.  This time it ignited and we soon had nice warm air inside the coach again.  We don’t know if it was the ‘air blast’ or the burners burning that fixed the problem, or even if the problem is fixed.  At least we didn’t need a furnace technician or have to sell the Motorhome.  We have our own onboard mechanic and problem solving person.  And it sure ain’t me:((  Oh but I did manage to get the furnace cover back on…..all by myself.  I wonder how long it will be before it falls off now:((

DSC_0013

Skies finally began clearing mid afternoon and by 5 o’clock we had welcoming sunshine on us again.  We were at 45F with a low tonight of 39.  Out on a walk with Pheebs this afternoon I thought how much better my skin feels in this temperature.  No uncomfortible feelings of hot and humid stickiness.  Don’t get me wrong now, I don’t like cold weather any better than most folks but even at 45F it’s still reasonably acceptable to me.  But just…………

SATURDAY NIGHT’S MOON

GROANER’S CORNER:((  What to say to a telemarketer! One of the things that has always bugged me (and I'm sure it has most of you, too) is to sit down to dinner only to be interrupted by a phone call from a telemarketer. I decided, on one such occasion, to try to be as irritating to them as they were to me. The call was from AT&T, and it went something like this: Me: HelloAT&T: Hello, this is AT&T.... Me: Is this AT&T?AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.... Me: This is AT&T?AT&T: Yes. This is AT&T.... Me: Is this AT&T?AT&T: YES! This is AT&T. May I speak to Mr. Salem please? Me: May I ask who is calling?AT&T: This is AT&T. Me: OK, hold on. At this point, I put the phone down for a solid 5 minutes thinking that, surely, this person would have hung up the phone. I ate my salad. Much to my surprise, when I picked up the receiver, she was still waiting. Me: Hello?AT&T: Is this Mr. Salem? Me: May I ask who is calling please?AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.... Me: Is this AT&T?AT&T: Yes, this is AT&T.... Me: This is AT&T?AT&T: Yes, is this Mr. Salem? Me: Yes, is this AT&T?AT&T: Yes, sir. Me: The phone company?AT&T: Yes, sir. Me: I thought you said this was AT&T.AT&T: Yes, sir, we are a phone company. Me: I already have a phone.AT&T: We aren't selling phones today, Mr. Salem. Me: Well, whatever it is, I'm really not interested, but thanks for calling. When you are not interested in something, I don't think you can express yourself any plainer than by saying "I'm really not interested", but this lady was persistent. AT&T: Mr. Salem, we would like to offer you 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Now, I am sure she meant she was offering a "rate" of 10 cents a minute, but she at no time used the word "rate". I could clearly see that it was time to whip out the trusty old calculator and do a little ciphering. Me: Now, that's 10 cents a minute 24 hours a day? AT&T: (getting a little excited at this point by my interest) Yes, sir, that's right! 24 hours a day! Me: 7 days a week?AT&T: That's right. Me: 365 days a year?AT&T: Yes, sir. Me: I am definitely interested in that! Wow!! That's amazing!! AT&T: We think so! Me: That's quite a sum of money!AT&T: Yes, sir, it's amazing how it adds up. Me: OK, so will you send me checks weekly, monthly or just one big one at the end of the year for the full $52,560? If you send an annual check, can I get a cash advance?AT&T: Excuse me? Me: You know, the 10 cents a minute.AT&T: What are you talking about? Me: You said you'd give me 10 cents a minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. That comes to $144 per day, $1,008 per week and $52,560 per year. I'm just interested in knowing how you will be making payment.AT&T: Oh no, sir, I didn't mean we'd be paying you. You pay us 10 cents a minute. Me: Wait a minute here! Didn't you say you'd give me 10 cents a minute? Are you sure this is AT&T?AT&T: Well, yes, this is AT&T, sir, but.... Me: But nothing! How do you figure that by saying that you'll give me 10 cents a minute that I'll give you 10 cents a minute? Is this some kind of suliminal telemarketing scheme? I've read about things like this in the Enquirer, you know. Don't use your alien brainwashing techniques on me.AT&T: No, sir, we are offering 10 cents a minute for.... Me: THERE YOU GO AGAIN! Can I speak to a supervisor please?!? AT&T: Sir, I don't think that is necessary. Me: Sure! You say that now! What happens later? AT&T: What? Me: I insist on speaking to a supervisor! AT&T: Yes, Mr. Salem. Please hold. So, now AT&T has me on hold, and my supper is getting cold. I begin to eat while I'm waiting for a supervisor. After a wait of a few minutes and while I have a mouth full of food....... Supervisor: Mr. Salem?Me: Yeth? Supervisor: I understand you are not quite understanding our 10 cents a minute program.Me: Id thish Ath Teeth & Teeth? (Is this AT&T) Supervisor: Yes, sir, it sure is. I had to swallow before I choked on my food. It was all I could do to suppress my laughter, and I had to be careful not to produce a snort. Me: No, actually I was just waiting for someone to get back to me so that I could sign up for the plan. Supervisor: OK, no problem, I'll transfer you back to the person who was helping you.Me: Thank you. I was on hold once again and managed a few more mouthfuls. I needed to end this conversation. Suddenly, there was an aggravated but polite voice at the other end of the phone. AT&T: Hello, Mr. Salem. I understand that you are interested in signing up for our plan?Me: Do you have that friends and family thing because you can never have enough friends and I'm an only child and I'd really like to have a little brother......... AT&T: (click) Note From Me: When I get a call from a telemarketer I prefer to give them options. I simply tell them Steve is not here right now but would they prefer to speak to Gomer Goosenuts, Elroy Von Chickenhead, or Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer..... ‘Click!!’............ Or My Other Favorite... Are you single?………..Click!!
