GOT MY CHANGE BACK, MORNING JEEP RIDE & ENJOYING THE SPRING CLEAN-UP

HEY WHO SAID WE COULDN’T WALK ON WATER

Clear overnight skies made for a very frosty cold morning but no matter, we knew that clear skies also meant warmer sunny day time skies.

Had to use the Sunfire & a set of jumper cables to start the Jeep this morning.  I had forgot to turn off the Sirius Satellite radio Friday & it drained Libby’s battery over night.  No matter, Pheebs & I were out the door shortly after 8 heading for Goderich to retrieve the change from my $10 bill I forgot to pick up the day before at Tim Hortons.  Kelly had phoned Friday night & they said they would have my change for me & they did.  With a smile the manager said the girls tried to catch me when I pulled away from the drive-thru.  Well I took that as a bit of flattery of course simply because it has been many many years since girls have ever chased me for anything.  Well, if they ever did in the first place that is.

With another coffee & carrot muffin in hand Pheebs & I hustled ourselves right out of town first heading north up the highway then cutting off on a gravel road heading east.  Ahhhh, how nice to be out in our scenic rural countryside again.  Of course it’s still basically a dirty gray looking landscape until trees begin to bud & crops begin to sprout but it was just nice to be out & about with Pheebs window down & the heater on.   We motored around stopping here & there at a few of our old favorite places.  Didn’t go real far & we were back home by 11.

A mixture of sun & cloud & as the day wore on it became more sun than cloud.  A great day for working around outside at the big Spring clean-up.  I like this time of year when one can get out in the cool fresh air.  It’s ingrained in we Northerners who have lived through many harsh winters to welcome & fully appreciate the wonders of Spring with it’s warming sun & gentle greens emerging from the Earth.  Even though Kelly & I have dodged most of the winter winds, ice & snow for the past 10 years we still love Spring time & are always glad to be here to welcome it in.

Noticed a question in the Shout Box asking  …"Al, many Rvers have expressed some of their stress with Rving and boondocking. Would you be willing to share what your experience is with long term Rving and boondocking”?……… Yes, I can share a few thoughts about that & will do so in another post shortly.

Did a bit more pine needle raking after supper so I will again go to bed with a good tired on tonight.  I like those kinds of tired when at the end of a day one has not only physically but mentally accomplished something.  The mental part for me comes in when I stand back & see winter’s mess beginning to disappear & our grounds looking good again.

GROANER’S CORNERSad smile(can anyone tell me how to turn these emoticons off in Open Live Writer)      A busload of retired Americans was touring Switzerland. On the third day, they visited a farm known for its excellent quality goat cheese.  The young farmer’s wife gave them a tour, a cheese making demonstration, and finally some samples. As the retirees were tasting the cheeses, she pointed to a pasture full of goats.  She said, “This is a special pasture where we let our older goats graze happily after they can no longer give milk. In the United States, what do you do with your old goats?”  An old lady piped up, “Honey, they take us on bus tours.”

FORGETFUL ME FORGOT MY CHANGE AGAIN:((

DSC_0015

I was a bit reluctant to peek out our window this morning but when I did I was happy to see the rains had finally stopped & there was no snow accumulation or hard coatings of ice on everything just a light smattering of corn snow here & there.  Could hear wind in the tops of our pine trees again.

OUR RURAL FARM LANDS ARE ONLY WEEKS AWAY FROM BURSTING FORTH WITH THIS YEAR’S NEW CROPS

Despite colder weather around us it sure is nice being back in a house with a real furnace with duct work carrying warm air to every room.  Our Congress house doesn't have a furnace & when there in cool weather we rely on electric heaters to keep us warm.  We much prefer a furnace carrying heat to every room.

SNOW FENCING HELPS RESTRAIN WINTER’S DRIFTING SNOW BLOWN IN BY WESTERLY WINDS ACROSS THE OPEN LAKE

After being towed behind the Motorhome for over 5 days & with temps around the freezing mark the past couple nights I figured Pheebs & I had better take Libby out for a short run to charge her battery up.  I didn’t have to convince Pheebs to go so with that thought in mind we headed ourselves on over to Goderich.  Seeing how it was 'Good Friday' it seemed like Pheebs & I were the last 2 characters left on the Planet after some kind of cataclysmic happening.  Never encountered one car all the to Goderich & even Goderich itself was akin to a ghost town.  I was almost in a state of alarm thinking Tim Hortons might not be open so imagine my relief when I entered Goderich's east end & saw the proverbial vehicle line-up at 'Timmies' drive-thru.  Recognizing the place Pheebs proceeded to fly around upside down in the Jeep as I squawked into the mike, "small coffee with cream & a carrot muffin please".  Had been the best part of 5 months since I had last uttered those words.  And speaking of Tim Hortons I have to go back tomorrow morning.  In one of my classic moves I gave the drive-thru guy at the window a $10 bill, was handed my coffee & muffin then drove away forgetting the change.  Only took me 9 hours this time to remember what I had forgot…………..again!!

CHILDREN’S LAUGHTER WILL SOON CHASE AWAY THESE COLD GRAY DAYS

Figured we'd take us for a little spin down around the south harbor & have a look at the beach & good old Lake Huron.  Not too much had changed since the last there in late October last year except none of the trees had any leaves left on them.  An icy wind coming in off the lake kept us in the Jeep so all of today's photos were again taken from Libby's drivers seat.  Heavily overcast skies gave the morning an overall gray moody feeling.  Very little activity anywhere except a few flocks of Sea Gulls hanging on the westerly winds.

DSC_0011

I was curious to see how the Inuksuk's along the beach had faired over the winter & was heartened to see they were still mainly intact.  With winter gales being relatively light the Inuksuk's were spared from Lake Huron's long icy fingers snatching at their very being & knocking them asunder.

A stop at a south end gas bar filled up Libby's tank once again & had Pheebs spending some very anxious moments.  Soon as we pulled into the large mall parking lot & headed for the gas bar she recognized the place right away & began going bonkers because she remembered the gas attendant always gives her a treat here.  Oh-Oh, new person on the job this morning & there was no 'doggy treat' forthcoming.  Well not at first anyway & Pheebs seemed quite put out about that jumping from window to window watching the attendant like a Hawk wondering where her treat was.  When the girl came up to the window with the credit card machine Pheebs was standing on my lap right in her face staring her down.  Luckily this Gal was a doggy person & hastily headed back inside to get Pheebs her doggy treat.  Whewwwww, close call there but we soon departed with smiling faces all round:))

Arriving home a short time later we headed back inside the warm house & intended on staying there for the rest of the day.  Without a nice blast of  warm 'feeling good sunshine' to charge my batteries I was low on energy with little enthusiasm for getting anything done outside.  However it only took one little dribble of sunshine at precisely 2:36 this afternoon to roust me out of my recliner & head me back outside.  With leaf rake in hand my 2016 big Spring clean-up was underway.   Also unloaded a bunch of stuff from 2 of the Motorhomes 6 bins & couldn't help but notice how great it felt to once again be outside doing something not only useful but physically enjoyable as well.  In fact I enjoyed it so much I was outside again after supper raking up yet more piles of damp pine needles:))

A COUPLE OF LAKE FREIGHTERS IN THE HARBOR

With sunshine forecast for Saturday I'm thinking Pheebs & will get us our first little country road Jeep ride of the season & resume the yard clean-up when we return.  Well that's what I figure anyway.

A ROW OF FISHING BOATS & HARBOR TUGS

Now here's a funny little thing that happened when I decided to work on our trip numbers a couple days ago.  Reached into a drawer for a small solar calculator.  The calculator had been in that dark drawer for the past 6 months so no numbers came up when I pressed the number buttons.  Thought to myself 'oh well I'll wait until tomorrow & set the calculator in a window to charge itself up again'.  Then I thought, wait a minute, I spent a lot of time in school well over 60 years ago programming my own onboard computer & it's quite capable & sometimes still able to work whether it's light out or not.  In fact my own computer which travels with me everywhere I go is incased in a hard shell in total darkness anyway.  Well except for maybe a couple points of light on the front panel.  Grabbed me a pencil & a piece of paper, dusted a few cob webs out of the way & punched the 'on' button.   Thought I heard a few start-up whirring sounds in my head & perhaps sensed a few old tired neurons firing through a few rusty brain cells.  With our trip figures in front of me I took my pencil in hand &  proceeded to  my cranium brand computers boost button & the whirring increased to the point my hand & fingers began moving & in fact began jotting numbers down.  Let me see now, add this, carry that number over there, double that number & subtract another number somewhere else.  Yes, yes, now it's all coming back now from Miss Rudy's grade 6 class at the Tavistock Public School oh those so many years ago.  In less than a minute I actually had the numbers I was looking for.  Maybe not exactly the right numbers but by golly I had some numbers anyway & I didn't even have to use the solar calculator to get them either.  Now let me see, where's that NASA rocket scientist application form I had laying around here.  Aw yes there it is………….

DSC_0026GROANER'S CORNER:((  A woman went to the doctors office with a severe case of hiccups. She was seen by one of the new doctors, but after about 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst out, screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped and asked her what the problem was & had her sit down and relax in another room while she explained what happened.  The older Doctor then marched back to the new Doctor and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?"  The new doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his clipboard.  "Cured her hiccups though, didn't it?"

ALTHOUGH COLD & RAINING THE BAD ICE STORM MISSED US BY A HAIR

DSC_0002

LOOKING FORWARD TO POSTING ONCE AGAIN FROM OUR BRIGHT CHEERY SUNROOM

First thing I did this morning was stick my head out the door to see how bad the predicted nasty over night weather had been.  Happy to see no snow on the ground & even happier to see nothing coated in ice.  Wasn't as cold as I thought it would be but winds were strong in our pine trees overhead.  Freezing rain warnings are still in effect for today.  A quick look at this morning's weather map showed me how truly fortunate we were to have slipped through the bad weather fronts when we did.  Weather is always a big concern when traveling across the country at this time of year & is one of the main reasons we prefer to make that trek as quickly as we can.

DSC_0030

IT’S BEEN A COLD RAINY DAY

Oh how nice to be back to my desktop computer with it's big bright screen again.  My photos look so much better when I see them here & so much so that it makes me wonder now if maybe my Toshiba laptop's screen is slowly dimming.  I have noticed the contrast adjustments I make to photos in my Picasa photo editing program using the laptop do not translate accurately to the final published post.  Always a problem with that & maybe it has to do with my laptop's screen brightness.  Sure is a big difference when I view things here with my big desktop monitor.  'WOW'

DSC_0001

Have to say again how great it feels to be home.  That long hot shower Wednesday afternoon in our new shower (last year) was just the best.  Big Spring clean-up outside again this year & it's always a favorite thing of mine getting the yard & flower beds back in shape.  First couple of nice days I'll be busy with my rake & loving every minute of it.  A ba-zillion million pine needles to rake up of course but I always look at that outside work as a great & honest excuse for exercise.  To exercise for the sake of exercising has never interested me but to get some free exercise in while accomplishing something physically useful & creative is always a win-win for somebody like me.

DSC_0028

WE WERE RIGHT ON THE VERGE OF FREEZING RAIN FOR AWHILE

The numbers are in & we drove 2,567 miles from Congress Arizona to Bayfield Ontario with 7 fuels stops & a total gas cost of $591.00 American Dollars or $785 Canadian Dollars.  We left Congress with half a tank of gas & arrived in Bayfield with three quarters of a tank.  Thanks to cheaper gas prices this was our lowest fuel cost in 10 years I think.  The 7 fuel stops were in Congress Az., Bellemont Az., Moriarity NM., Hooker Tx., York Nebraska, Peru Illinois, & Lansing Michigan.

WILL BE NICE TO SOON SET OUT SOME OF OUR OUTDOOR THINGS AGAIN

Aside from carrying a few things in from the rig today we both took it easy resting up & de-stressing from our long journey.  If I dozed off once in my recliner I dozed off a hundred times it seems.  Aside from high winds, cold temperatures & rain, Bayfield so far has escaped some of the really bad weather which has occurred around us closing schools & roads in places.  Freezing rain & ice have knocked out power in some communities & I'm sure there will probably be tree damage in some areas.  We may wake up to some snow on the ground by morning but if that's all we get we will consider ourselves lucky.  Spring's warmer sunny days are right round the corner & I'm glad we're home to welcome it in.  Also, I have my fingers crossed this post publishes alright tonight.  Kelly had to install ‘Open Live Writer’ on our desk top for me.  I see the small dark gold borders are missing from around my photos but if that’s all that is different I’ll be a happy guy.

VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO HEADING OUTSIDE & BEGINNING THE BIG YEAR CLEAN-UP

Thanks for all the ‘Welcome Home’ comments folks.  Nice to be here for sure.  I’ve decided again this year to try & keep my ‘travel blog’ going for the summer & hopefully come up with something interesting to write about from time to time & of course Pheebs & I will be out scouring the countryside every week for new photos.  I thank all my readers for giving me the inspiration to again pursue my 3 hobbies of travel, photography, & blogging.  I suspect my posts will once more reflect my many changing moods, thoughts, & feelings so please bear with me over the coming months of ups & downs & hills & dales as we all ride together this challenging roller coaster of life………………DSC_0004

GROANER'S CORNER:((  A man was driving home one evening and realized that it was his daughter's birthday and he hadn't bought her a present. He drove to the mall and ran to the toy store and he asked the store manager "How much is that new Barbie in the window?"  The Manager replied, "Which one? We have,

     - 'Barbie goes to the gym'for $19.95 ...
-'Barbie goes to the Ball' for $19.95 ...
-'Barbie goes shopping for $19.95 ...
-'Barbie goes to the beach' for $19.95...
-'Barbie goes to the Nightclub' for $19.95 ...
      and 'Divorced Barbie' for $375.00."
"Why is the Divorced Barbie $375.00, when all the others are $19.95?" Dad asked surprised.
"Divorced Barbie comes with Ken's car, Ken's House, Ken's boat, Ken's dog, Ken's cat and all of Ken's furniture."

LANSING MICHIGAN TO BAYFIELD ONTARIO…..WE ALMOST BEAT THE RAIN & GOOD TO BE HOME:))

IMG_0095

‘WE ARE HOME’ & THE BIG EEE IS BACK IN HER SUMMER SPOT…..photo by Kelly:))

A quiet night behind Lansing Michigan's Cracker Barrel restaurant.  No rumbling train whistles, Interstate traffic noise, or young folks in purposely noisy mufflered cars revving up their engines in a Walmart parking lot.   Kelly had Pheebs & I up by 4 a.m. & i noticed temperatures had definitely dropped overnight.  I was glad it was not raining……or worse. DSC_0001

APPROACHING PORT HURON MICHIGAN & THE BORDER

Despite all Tuesday’s dire weather predictions I was heartened to see a ‘clear’ weather ahead of us all the way to Bayfield when I checked the weather map first thing this morning but close behind us I could see rain closing in.  It would be a race to the finish line in which we were later to come in second.  Freezing rain warnings were out & it was quickly shaping up to be a potentially nasty day.  Time was not to be wasted.DSC_0004

HEADING OVER THE BLUE WATER BRIDGE FROM THE UNITED STATES TO CANADA

It was dark when we pulled out from behind Lansing’s Cracker Barrel at 6:10 this morning.  Luckily traffic was still light at that hour but an hour later we were mixing it up with Flint Michigan’s morning rush hour on the city’s by-pass.  Pretty mild stuff compared to Des Moines morning rush just a day before.

DSC_0006

THAT’S CANADA OVER THERE:))

With a graying mist hanging in the air we rolled up & over the large Blue Water bridge at Port Huron Michigan/Sarnia Ontario.  Lake Huron was visible out our left window with the St. Clair River below leading to Lake Erie far off to the right.  It was 8:20 a.m. & with only 1 vehicle ahead of us at the border crossing we rolled up to the gate.  Nice young fella with the usual questions welcomed us back to Canada & that was it…….we were across the border & back in Canada:))))))

Twenty happy minutes later we were in Forest Ontario at Tim Hortons coffee shop for our traditional coming home coffee & doughnuts.  Although a cold & cloudy damp day it was better than a year ago when we stopped at Forest’s Tim Hortons & stepped out of the rig into snow.

Within a minute of leaving Forest we had ourselves a couple dozen raindrops on the windshield but that was all for the moment.  However motoring into Grand Bend a short time later a light rain began to fall & from there to Bayfield we had our wipers on intermittent.  The rain had beat us home by about 20 minutes.  It was just a few minutes before 10 o’clock when we rolled past STORMRUNNER RV SALES & SERVICE & gave Di 6 big ‘horn honks’ to let her know we were home:))

BY THE TIME WE GOT HOME IT WAS LOOKING A BIT RAINY IN BAYFIELD

Pulled over on the south side of Bayfield’s Clan Gregor square & unhitched the Jeep.  We were only a mile from home & minutes later we were home.  Ahhhhhhh, how nice it is.  Kelly & Pheebs in the Jeep arrived a minute before I did so Kelly was out taking a few pics of me pulling the Big EEE into it’s summer spot.  It was 10 after 10 & our long tiring & sometimes tedious journey was finally at an end.

IMG_0090

In a cold but light drizzle we spent the next hour or so unloading about a third of the rig.  The rest of the stuff can wait for nicer weather.  No surprises in the house & everything like the TV & internet fired up smoothly.  It was late afternoon when I finally flopped into my big old cushy recliner with the same thought I always have after our long trek home from the South-west each year.  “That’s it I’m never leaving home again”!!!!!  Of course that feeling doesn’t last long & I know in a week or two my travel restlessness will be growing once again & won’t leave me alone until we are back on the road next October heading back to the great American South-west again.  So in the meantime Pheebs & I had better get ourselves out shortly with a coffee & a muffin to begin checking out our areas good old back roads again:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((    Shooting the breeze down at the Veteran's hospital, a trio of old timers ran out of tales of their own heroic exploits and started bragging about their ancestors. "My great grandfather, at age 13," one declared proudly, "was a drummer boy at Shiloh."  "Mine," boasted another, "went down with Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn."  "I'm the only soldier in my family," confessed vet number three, "but if my great grandfather was living today he'd be the most famous man in the world."  "What'd he do?" his friends wanted to know.  "Nothing much. But he would be 165 years old."
