FOUND US A NEW LOCATION THIS MORNING AND IT IS HAPPY CAMPERS WE ARE:))

DSC_0044

PHEEBS IS FEELING VERY CONTENT IN OUR NEW SPOT

As expected we woke up rested and feeling much better about things this morning.  What a treat to step out of the coach in calm air after the windy week we had west of Yuma.  Not cold and we took ourselves for a nice walk reminiscing back through the years about the many times we have stayed in the Rock House Road area.

MORNING WALK THROUGH SOME PLEASANT OLD MEMORIES

Ever since first coming to Borrego Springs in December of 07 we have always come to Rock House Road at the Clark Dry Lake Bed.  Up until a couple years ago there was lots of room for RV boon-dockers here in a natural desert setting.   The sweeping views of the Santa Rosa mountains are as magnificent as ever but due to changes and Anza-Borrego State Park acquiring land here it is not the same as it once was.  Bulldozers have flattened and totally removed much of the natural desert setting along with a number of Jeep roads and once great boon-docking spots.  Because of Anza-Borregos new boundaries and the rough bull dozed area RV’ers are now confined to a smaller space closer to Coyote Mountain.  There is still a fair amount of room but it does mean more rigs in a smaller area and that just doesn’t work for us.  It is in no way anything like a crowded RV Park or what you find around Quartzsite in mid to late January.DSC_0001

THIS IS HOW THE NATURAL DESERT LOOKS AND TURNING AROUND A SECTION OF IT NOW LOOKS LIKE THE BULLDOZED AREA BELOW

DSC_0005

WE THINK THIS IS A MEMORIAL TO A WOMAN WHO ONCE LIVED IN AN OLD TRAILER OUT HERE YEAR ROUND…SHE WASN’T FRIENDLY AND WE NEVER MET HER BUT REMEMBER SEEING HER TRAILER

After our encounter with ‘the angry person’ Sunday we left that particular area and drove the Motorhome and Jeep back to where we had un-hooked the Jeep Saturday across from Peg Leg Smiths.  Figured we would overnight there further back from the highway but found it way too bumpy.  Looks flat from the highway but dirt bikes, dune buggies, and ATV’s have torn up the surface so many times over the years the whole area is lumpy.  Didn’t really want to go up to Rock House Road but it was the only place left so go up there we did and spent the night.

DSC_0013

OUR OVERNIGHT ROCK HOUSE ROAD SPOT

Could see a couple campfires out and around a few distant rigs and oh how nice those campfires smelled as those memory filled wisps of wood smoke drifted our way.  It was a quiet night.  If your a new boon-docker headed for Borrego Springs I would definitely recommend you come to the Rock House Road area and enjoy it as much as we have over the years.

After our morning walk and with Pheebs riding shotgun in the back of the Jeep we headed off to check out a couple more potential boon-docking areas traveling first the back way through Borrego Springs where all the Palm Tree and fruit orchards are.

First area we looked at didn’t pan out because the road leading into the desert was too rocky for the rig’s tires.  Traveling a little further out of Borrego (18 minutes) we headed for an area we we remembered from previous years.  And we hit the ‘Jackpot’:))  Turning into the desert we followed a narrow sandy road to it’s end and found an excellent spot but it was on State Park land so we weren’t sure about it.  Spotted a fellow walking near a Class A Motorhome so Kelly quickly bailed out and hailed him down.  Turns out he was born in Windsor Ontario.  A really nice chap who owns the land his Motorhome sits on and has lived here for many years.  Said he has seen people camped here before and felt we would be just fine setting up in the area we looked at.  With that affirmation under our belts we raced back lickety-split to Rock House Road to get our Motorhome.

I ALWAYS WONDER WHAT STORIES THESE OLD BUILDINGS OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE COULD TELL

DSC_0030

While packing up the rig Kelly spotted a fifth wheel nearby and recognized the people from a blog she reads.  They are a young fulltime working on the road couple and their blog is 188 SQUARE FOOT SMALL HOUSE BIG FLUFFY FAMILY.  They too were in the process of packing up and heading out mainly because of the slow internet.  Like us they had scouted out a better location finding one over in the Blair Valley.  Blair Valley is the location of Marshal South’s Ghost Mountain homestead so our next location move may very well be over that-a-way.  Sure hope so because I have been wanting to camp over there since late 2008.

WITH KELLY FOLLOWING IN THE JEEP PHEEBS AND LEAD THE WAY INTO BORREGO SPRINGS

Driving both the Motorhome and Jeep we rolled out of Rock House Road and headed on into Borrego Springs.  Needed a few grocery items so while Pheebs and I pulled into a large parking area on the northeast side of Christmas Circle Kelly whipped into the grocery store for a few things and picked up a California Burrito at Jilbertos to go.  That jumbo Burrito turned out to be the best of ever and neither one of us could finish our halves so saved what was left for supper.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE LITTLE TOWNS OF EVER

We were soon back on the road again with Pheebs and I leading the way and Kelly following in the Jeep.  We timed it and it was about 18 minutes to our new site.  Oh boy, we are soooooo pleased with our new location we were almost ecstatic.  Well of course you know people our age never really get too ecstatic about anything much anymore so let me re-phrase that and say, ‘we are pretty darn happy about our new spot.  It has all the pluses we like.  We are totally surrounded by Natures wondrous beauty.  it is quiet, peaceful, and relaxing.  A few distant highway noises but that is acceptable.  We can see for miles and miles all around us.  On distant horizons we are bordered by the massive San Ysidro mountains to our northwest, the towering Santa Rosa Mountains and Coyote Mountain off to the North with the Borrego Badlands between us.  Borrego Mountain behind us with the San Felipe Hills and Vulcan Mountains straight ahead to the west.  To our east are the Pinion and Vallecito Mountains.  My oh my are we ever happy campers at the moment…….and I use those ‘at the moment’ words for a reason.

You know the old saying, ‘if something seems to be too good to be true it probably is.’  Our main concern is that we may be asked to leave by a State Park Ranger and we are prepared for that knowing we are on State Park land.  But in the meantime we intend to enjoy our new spot to the max.

When we first scouted out the spot in the Jeep we checked it out with Kelly’s laptop and cell phone to make sure we had Verizon and T-Mobile coverage……..AND WE DID:))   A reasonably good darn signal too.  Maybe not exactly smokin fast but much better than Rock House Road for sure.  Setting up the rig Kelly noticed the signal kept dropping in and out so for the first time since taking our internet directional antennae off our Congress house roof in March of 2016 we hauled it out of storage, dusted it off and set it up in a window facing Borrego Springs which we can actually see across the Borrego Valley.  ‘Walla’ we were good to go and the Verizon signal held right in there.

Now a little catch-up.  I said catch-up not ketchup.  In a response to a comment on my Sunday post Kelly left this note in our Shout Box:: Gypsy..we were not anywhere near his tent. He was probably 1/4 mile away. It seemed to be an issue with him "stalking" his ex-wife who likes to use the spot we were going to set up on……That pretty much sums up what happened.  As it turns out, the site we are at now is actually better than the great site we missed out on:))

A GREAT MORNING…….THEN THE BOTTOM FELL OUT

We had ourselves a great morning and decided to move the rig a short distance to a nicer location.  And that’s when we encountered our first ever really nasty person.  It was instantly obvious to me this short tempered angry man living in a tent was mentally unbalanced which another nearby boon-docker fellow confirmed.  There is more to this story of course and maybe in a later blog I will tell you what happened.  Because of this unfortunate encounter Kelly and I felt it would be safer for us to leave the immediate area and that is what we did.  In Shakespeare’s immortal words, ‘sometimes discretion is the better part of valor’.  And so it was so this morning.  We are temporarily in another location and in the morning we will once again Jeep ourselves around looking for another site.  Hopefully somewhere with better internet and cell phone connections……..and no people!!  No point in me including any photos tonight because our connection is very poor.  Not even sure this post will publish………….

WE FINALLY ESCAPED THE YUMA WIND TUNNEL AND LANDED OURSELVES IN CALIFORNIA’S BORREGO SPRINGS…..YAAAAAY TEAM:))

DSC_0040

FOUND OURSELVES A WHOLE NEW BOON-DOCKING AREA NEARER TO BORREGO SPRINGS

Checking Borrego Springs weather this morning we saw they were having 4 mph winds.  Checking here in Yuma the steady winds were 15 mph gusting to who knows what.  Forty, fifty mph maybe.  So here was our dilemma.  Do we sit tight and ride out the winds for who knows how long or do we saddle up, batten down the hatches and strike out for Borrego??

DSC_0001

TRAVELING NORTH ON OGILBE ROAD

Winds were barreling in from the northwest and that’s just the direction we were headed so that meant headwinds which were better than tricky crosswinds from the north or south hitting us broadside.  We’ve driven in all kinds of windy conditions over the years so the decision was made to head off and see how we make out.  We needn’t have worried.

DSC_0002

OUR DESTINATION TODAY IS DUE WEST (LEFT) OF THOSE FAR DISTANT CHOCOLATE MOUNTAINS ON THE HORIZON

We had things packed up and squared away by 9:30.  Hooked the Jeep up then walked over to Wandering Willy’s camp to say good-bye.  He pointed to a dark pick-up truck with a fifth wheel aways away and said that was Ivan who had rolled in Friday.  No sign of life way over at Ivan’s camp so we didn’t walk over.  He might have still been wandering around upside down in his jammies:))

DSC_0003

WE TURNED LEFT AT THIS JUNCTION AND DROVE OURSELVES RIGHT OUT OF THE YUMA WIND TUNNEL

DSC_0004

HEADING WEST AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING IT WAS FOR A DRIVE THROUGH THE DESERT

We soon had the big wheels rolling and made our way out to Ogilbe Road and turned north.  Wind was on our nose but nothing to worry about.  By the time we reached the northern end of Ogilbe Road at highway 78 and turned left heading west the winds had diminished to about nothing.  We had driven right out of the Yuma wind tunnel.   Set our sights on Borrego Springs and put the hammer down.  Beautiful sunny morning for a drive through the mountains and desert.  Especially the Imperial Sand Dunes.  How nice to be on the road going somewhere again:))

Our first and only stop before reaching Borrego was the big Arco station west of Salton City on the northwest corner of highway 86 and S22.  Gray and black tanks dumped, propane, some gas and we filled the fresh water tank.  Half an hour later we were westbound on S22 for the 20 minute drive to Borrego Springs.

We were determined this time not to go to our usual spot on Rock House Road at the southern tip of Coyote Mountain.  We could already see there were too many RV’s there for us.  We slipped down around a big curve on S22 and pulled into a large hard packed sandy area across from Peg Leg Smiths.  This area is popular with younger folks and their ATV’s, dirt bikes, and dune buggies etc.  But no matter, we weren’t staying.  This we knew to be a good spot to un-hook the Jeep and so some scouting around for a boon-docking site.  Checked out one spot near the dump but it was to unevenly sandy.  From there we drove our tummies straightaway into Borrego Springs with a destination in mind.

Of course you knew we were going right to Jilbertos of course.  Things wouldn’t be right with the world if we didn’t pop into Jilbertos after first arriving in town you know.  The place was packed.  In fact we noticed right away soon as we got to Christmas Circle there sure were a lot of people in town today.  Big change since the last time we were here.  I think Jilbertos makes my favorite hamburger.  Double paddy:))

From Jilbertos we headed right out of town to an area we had scouted out a few years ago.  Only 3 other rigs around and we did manage to find us a spot.  Got out and had a look around.  Yep this would do.  Back into the Jeep and back to where we left the rig across from Peg Leg Smiths.  With Kelly following in the Jeep we headed back to our new spot.  Took a bit of wiggling to get in and I did have to use our rarely used hydraulic leveling jacks to get us on some semblance of an even keel.  We know it’s not the greatest site but it will be just fine for us.  No RV’s in front of us, no RV’s behind us, one RV about a quarter mile out on our right and one RV about 300 yards to our left.  I think we can live with that for now:))

JOCKYING THE MOTORHOME DOWN A NARROW DUSTY ROAD

About 4:20 California time a big huge shadow loomed over us and I watched it slowly travel eastward across the wide expanse of the Borrego Valley in front of us.  The late afternoon sun had just slipped behind the mighty San Ysidro mountains directly behind us.  We are in one of my all time favorite places here at Borrego Springs and what a nice feeling to be somewhere different again and especially this time with a whole different view all around us.

DSC_0037

DSC_0039

Sooooo nice to be out of that Yuma wind and with the air much calmer here in Borrego it feels much warmer.  Definitely was a right decision to pack up this morning and find us some much better weather.  After all isn’t that what RVing is all about.  How nice to have the freedom to pick up and move anytime one decides to do so.  We sure had been missing that these past nearly 5 years.

IT WAS A YUMA MOVIE MORNING AND WE’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS WIND…..WE’RE HEADING OUT!!

IMG_0540

MORNING AT OUR HOUSE

Dictionary defines the word ‘furious’ as ‘in an extremely angry manner’.  And that perfectly describes the huge wind gusts that came like thieves in the night and stole our sleep.  Our coach was not only shaking but shuddering in the wind blasts.  And those winds continued through morning and as I write this tonight our rig is still rocking, swaying, and shuddering from whip lash wind gusts.  We’ve had enough and we’re getting the heck out of here in the morning!!

BEING SO WINDY I ONLY TOOK A FEW PHOTOS WITH MY SMALL POINT AND SHOOT CANON TODAY

Kelly hadn’t seen the movie ‘La La Land’ so it was off to Yuma’s Harkins Movie Theater this morning for both of us.  Sand blowing across the roads reminded me of drifting snow back home in Ontario.  Great clouds of sandy dust could be seen for miles.  The movie ‘Founder’ began today and that was the movie I decided to see.  It’s the story of McDonald’s and how it all got started with 2 brothers then built into a franchise empire by a fella named Ray Kroc.  Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc and does a fine job with the role.  I don’t know how true to fact Hollywood kept the story but I found it an entertaining movie which held my interest all the way through.

IMG_2539

WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE THEATER THERE WAS A LINE-UP GOING IN…….LOOKS LIKE SENIORS DAY TO ME

IMG_2540

NOTICE HOW WARMLY EVERYONE IS DRESSED…..YES IT WAS SUNNY BUT THAT DRIVING WIND TOOK JUST ABOUT EVERY BIT OF WARMTH OUT OF THE AIR

Kelly’s movie was out half an hour before mine so she was waiting outside the theater.  She really liked La La Land which I figured she would.  After watching hamburgers being flipped in the ‘Founder’ movie I was naturally hungry so guess where we went??  If you guess McDonalds you would be…….wrong.  We knew In-N-Out Burger built a way better burg for a way better price than McDonalds so that’s where we headed.  So how did we like our In-N-Out burgers??  Don’t know……we didn’t stay long enough to eat anything.  There was a line-up out the door and neither Kelly or I have any kind of patience for any kind of line-up.  Still feeling hungry for a burg did we then head off to McDonalds??  Nope, we slipped across the road to 5 Guys and nabbed us a couple burgs along with a free bag of peanuts.  Burgs were fine but I think I am now a newly converted In-N-Out Burger guy……………..

IMG_2541

WE HUNKERED DOWN IN 5 GUYS FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES

Fought our way west along I-8 through heavy wind gusts finally arriving back at the rig shortly before two.  Positioned the Jeep to give our satellite dish additional protection from the wind but winds seemed to be increasing so I finally took the satellite dish off the tripod just to be on the safe side and put it in the Jeep.  And that basically was the end of our afternoon because to venture outside meant running the risk of being blown right off our feet all the way down into Mexico somewhere.  And no way did either one of us want to end up standing in a long line-up of people who had also been blown across the border, all waiting to get back into the States as soon as the big winds stop someday!!

-------------------

We checked out California’s weather in Borrego Springs and could see things were much calmer over that-a-way so in the morning we’ll be packing up and heading further west.  We’ll be looking for another area other than our usual spot along Rock House Road at the Clark Dry Lake Bed this time too.  We also noticed an area between Borrego Springs and San Diego we have never been to so in a few days we want to do a Jeep day trip over that way in hopes of maybe finding some new boon-docking areas for the rig later.  We really do need to find us some new and interesting places……..

-------------------

And for all you permanently residing southern folks I urge you to keep an eye on the Furry Gnomes (Seasons In The Valley) winter posts from way up there in that Canada place just a few hours from where we live.  Seeing winters beautiful side with camera in hand has kept Stu busy this season.  Here’s a few links…..Ephereral Beauty --  Winter Road Shadows-- Winter Fences -- It's Cracking Outside -- Frozen Webwood Falls -- Winter Barns

As any long term reader of my blog knows I do have my highs and I do have my lows and I have always blogged about both as well as all the shades of gray in between.  I had been on a real nice high since we sold the house but knew I would stumble at some point.  And stumble I did for a few days but with the advent of another move coming up I can feel my spirits lifting once again.  It is just the way I am.  I have my ups and I have my downs.  And I write about them….

-----------------------

Some readers are going to wonder why we didn’t attend Bloggerfest this year.  We actually made the decision to skip Bloggerfest a couple months ago when we thought we were going to be in the southeastern part of Arizona.  We decided to stick with that decision even though we are back in the Bloggerfest neighborhood so to speak.  We attended the first two Bloggerfests in 2015 and 2016 because I really wanted to be a part of supporting it and like others, helping to get it off the ground.   By the sounds of it Bloggerfest is growing itself a good set of strong legs.  Perhaps next year we will drop in again but this year we’re just going to keep on rolling and wish everyone attending Bloggerfest all the best.  And don’t forget to take lots of pictures eh:))

'Fine.' I said.  She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, 'I'm wrong.'  I grinned and replied, 'You're right.'

BIT OF A MOTIVATION SLUMP

‘SHHHHHHH’ WANDERING WILLY IS STILL SOUND ASLEEP OVER THERE

Kelly suggested we head off to Yuma this morning but I couldn’t seem to get myself interested in that so she headed into town by herself.  My motivation level has slipped the past couple days.  Only thing I felt like doing was hanging out with the Pheebs, listening to music and reading,   Us guys are really missing our morning Jeep rides and are already looking forward to getting home in late March, grabbing a coffee and muffin at Tim Hortons and blissfully losing ourselves in the gravely spider web network of dusty rural back roads and swampy green conservation areas in southwestern Ontario.IMG_2536

Billy says: "i'm fine, Mommy.. I just haven't gone 'doody' yet."
Mother says: "Ok, you can stay here a few more minutes but, Bill why are you hitting yourself on the head?"  Billy says: "works for Ketchup."
