TRAVERSING THE GOAT TRAIL ROAD THROUGH BLOW SAND CANYON

DSC_0071

A FAMILY PHOTO THIS MORNING IN BLOW SAND CANYON

(This is Tuesday’s Post)

Each night on it’s long arc across the star filled night sky Earth’s Moon edges ever closer to becoming full in the Eastern sky.  And each night it’s ethereal moonbeams alite gently on a cactus laden desert floor giving the landscape a glowing serenity.  It is truly a touch of magic one feels standing quietly in the Moon’s soft glow.

Felt warmth in the air this morning when i stepped out with Pheebs in the darkness.  How nice of Mother Nature to finally turn off the big fan I thought.  Borrego’s lights twinkled in the calm darkness 11 miles off to the north.  An hour later with sunrise in the east two ends of a rainbow appeared on opposite sides of the Borrego Valley.  We were to see changing rainbows in the valley for the next several hours.

PHEEBS WAITS EXPECTANTLY OUTSIDE THE DOOR TO SEE IF SHE’S COMING THIS MORNING

No matter where one is at any time in the Borrego Springs area of Anza-Borrego State Park one is always close to a myriad of Jeep roads crawling across desert floors, scaling mountain sides or running through deep Canyon washes.   We picked up one of those Jeep roads less than a mile from where we are camped and headed off on yet another great scenic Jeep ride this morning.  Just when you think the scenery can’t get any better in this area all’s you have to do is turn a corner……and it does.

From the corner of Borrego Valley Road and highway 78 head east 1.5 miles and keep an eye out on the left for a small brown sign with white letters saying Buttes Pass.  This is actually the road to Slot Canyon which is absolutely a must do hike which we did do back in late 2007.  We drove out to the Slot parking lot and turned left along a narrow ridge top Jeep road and followed that out about a mile marveling at the deep canyon scenery.  A cloud cover had moved across this area so we decided to return another time with a sun drenched day pulling all the beautiful colors out of the rocks and canyon walls.

WE HEAD BACK OUT OF THE SAN FELIPE WASH AREA TO HOOK UP WITH GOAT TRAIL ROAD AGAIN

Goat Trail road is aptly named as it winds it’s way along the tops of several long and narrow ridge lines.  I was surprised at how well this road has been maintained.  Despite it’s dips and sharp turns it looks like a road grader machine or something has been used on this road keeping the surface flat and free of pot holes and wash-outs.  Although at no time this morning did we have occasion to use our 4 wheel drive and despite the smoothness of this hard sand packed road I would still be leery driving it without 4 wheel drive.  Some of those short sharp dips could set back wheels to spinning.

WINDS ARE PICKING UP

We were back to the rig about 10:30 Arizona time and boy oh boy was it ever windy.  Just when you think these big Borrego winds can’t get any worse they generally do.  Checked the weather site and saw there was a wind advisory for this area until 10 tonight.  There was no sitting outside this afternoon because as soon as one got up up out of their chair Borrego’s winds would have swept it away.  We generally position our coach to face prevailing winds which cuts down on a lot of shake and shudder.  Broadside on to these huge winds is generally not a good idea.

TELEPHOTO SHOT OF AN INTERESTING ROCK

If any adventurous outdoorsy person were to ever ask me where I thought the best place for them to spend their winter months I would be quick and precise with my answer.  The great American Southwest hands down.  If they wondered about specific places to go I would recommend many with Borrego Springs surrounded by Anza-Borrego State Park certainly being one of them.  It might even be at the top of my list for many obvious reasons which I’m sure readers have read about time and again in my posts.

If a prospective RV’er were to ask me what kind of an RV I would recommend I would not hesitate to suggest a Class A or C Motorhome.  Many advantages of course with the big one being the ability to tow a Jeep or any high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle.  If you want adventure and excitement with a healthy helping of sand and dust in your face the Southwest is where you will find it.  Where big winds can blow your shirt around backwards and launch your hat and false teeth into orbit.  Come on out, get yer shoes dirty and let yer hair down.  Get yourself off the smooth pavement and bury your wheels in some good old soft western sand.  Get your boots on the ground to walk where maybe nobody has ever walked before.  Hike the Chiricahua and Dragoon mountain trails Cochise and Geronimo did.  Walk the streets of Tombstone with the legendary ghosts of the Earp brothers.  Look around in any direction and see for miles and miles and miles.  Watch storms travel across valleys and cloud shadows lumber their way across towering mountain faces.  Stars from horizon to horizon and then there’s the desert floor by Moonlight and after a rain.  And don’t forget those majestic Saguaros found in the Sonoran Desert.

Oh dear it looks like I’ve got myself carried away again.  Morning Jeep runs have a habit of doing that to me.  I could sit here for hours typing away about all the great and wondrous things here in the Southwest but all good things must come to an end and all excitable little boys must sooner or later head for bed.  And so be it and so I be gone…………….

GROANER’S CORNER:((  The General Managers of Cascade Brewery (Tasmania), Tooheys (NewSouth Wales), XXXX (Queensland), CUB (Victoria) and Coopers (South Australia) were at a national beer conference.  They decide to all go to lunch together and the waitress asks what they want to drink.  The General Manager of Tooheys says without hesitation, "I'll have a Tooheys New."
The General Manager of Cascade smiles and says, "I'll have a Cascade Draught, brewed from pure mountain water."  The General Manager of Coopers proudly says, "I'll have a Coopers, the King of Beers."  The bloke from XXXX says, "I'll have a XXXX, the cleanest beer on the planet."
The General Manager from Carlton glances at his lunch mates and says, "I'll have a Diet Coke."
The others look at him like he has sprouted a new head.  He just shrugs and says, "Well if you guys aren't drinking beer, then neither will I."

Three travelers, an American, a Russian, and an Egyptian, were circumnavigating the globe a la Jules Verne. The Russian man put his hand out and reached down into the clouds.  “Aaah!” he said. “We're right over my homeland.” “How can you tell?” asked the American. “I can feel the cold air.” he replied. A few days later the African man put his hand through the clouds.  “Aah we're right over my homeland.” he said. “How do you know that?” asked the Russian. “I can feel the heat of the desert.” Several more days later the American put his hand through the clouds and stretched his arm way down. “Aah, we're right over New York.” The Russian and the African were amazed. “How do you know all of that?!” they exclaimed. The American pulled his arm in and held it up for them to see. “My watch is missing.”

HIGH WINDS, BLOWING SAND AND A 45 MILE DRIVE TO WALMART…..FOR PEANUT BUTTER

DSC_0006

RATHER THAN TRYING TO DECIDE ON ONE MOST BEST SUNRISE PHOTO I HAVE DECIDED TO INCLUDE ALL OF THEM AGAIN

Winds picked up in the night rattling everything on the Motorhome’s exterior that was rattlible.  I have over the ear headphones for listening to music so I put those on to deaden the wind noises and finally fell asleep for awhile but with wind gusts still banging on our coach my day started at 4:15 a.m.

DSC_0004-001

Winds continued all day with clouds scudding across mainly cloudy skies in the morning with flashes of temporary sunshine in the afternoon.  Not wanting to sit around in the Motorhome all day again we put on our thinking caps for things to do and came up with an old stand-by……Walmart.  I really needed to get me some decent peanut butter.  Shortly after 9 Arizona time with a strong northwest wind at our backs we headed off to Brawley California about 45 miles southeast of us.  I was happy to have somewhere to go:))

DSC_0001

ROLLING OUT FOR BRAWLEY CALIFORNIA WAY OUT THERE ON YONDER HORIZON

Having been to Walmart in Brawley half a dozen times before over the years we knew right where to find it and by golly it was still there.  I’ve always liked the looks of this store with it’s southwest colors and architecture.  We were needing groceries so it was in the grocery area where we spent our time with Kelly slowly plodding along up and down the aisles with the cart and me flying all over the place grabbing things on my list to carry back and drop into the slow moving cart.  It’s the way we like to shop, Kelly taking her time to look things over carefully and me rushing around frantically looking for a jar of peanut butter as if the world was about to end in 5 minutes.

IT WAS MY IDEA TO GO HERE TODAY:))

DSC_0006

BUT NOT MY IDEA TO GO HERE TODAY:(( >>>>>>>

The Walmart has a Subway Sandwich shop in it and the special to the end of the month was any foot long Sub for $6.  While I headed out to the Jeep with groceries Kelly ordered up a big Sub which we ate in the car with Pheebs helping us along.  A quick leg stretch and pit stop for Pheebs behind Walmart and we were on the road heading back to our rig.

The gusting northwesterly winds that had pushed us all the way to Brawley now were trying to keep us from going anywhere but our little Jeep punched through the wind and blowing sand with no problem.  We were back to our site in an hour and that’s with a gas stop and border patrol check-point thrown in.

GROANER’S CORNER:(( Three sisters, ages 92, 94, and 96, live together. One night the 96-year-0ld draws a bath. She puts one foot in and pauses. "Was I getting in the tub or out?" she yells.  The 94-year-old hollers back, "I don't know, I'll come up to see." She starts up the stairs and stops. She shouts, "Was I going up or going down?"  The 92-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea, listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that forgetful", and knocks on wood for good measure. Then she yells, "I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door."

Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground.  The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate.  “Dear,” she chirped, “I think it's time to tell him he's adopted.”

HAVE BEEN ENJOYING THESE WARM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DAYS IN THE BOONIES

DSC_0002

SOME OF THE DESERT OCOTILLOS IN THIS AREA ARE HUGE

Cool brisk westerly winds a-blowin again this morning so we were dressed warm for our walk.  According to weather reports there could be some inclement weather headed our way over the next couple days.  Rain even.  We are already clouded over.

DSC_0005

DESERT OCOTILLOS WILL SOON BE BLOOMING AND THIS IS THE FIRST ONE WE SPOTTED THIS MORNING

Turned out to be a ‘sitting around the rig’ day.  Not my fav of course but seemed kind of Okay maybe because it was Sunday.  So far so good in our current boon-docking spot.  No Park Rangers telling us we have to move and no other RV’ers anywhere nearby.  None that we can see anyway.  We just kind of marvel at how fortunate we were to have stumbled across this site which is so perfect for us.  I don’t mind staying longer in one spot when it is like this where there is basically nothing to see out our windows except nature’s wonders.  And we’re less than 10 miles out of Borrego Springs.

Seeing a number of powered paragliders flying over Borrego Springs Saturday morning I was reminded of the time on Rockhouse Road in February 2010 when I had to quickly run to the aid of one of those fellows when big winds forced him and his powered paraglider trike to the ground.  Had To Run Fast and I think that was the last time I ever did any running of any kind.

Flowergirl in a comment asks:  What tweaks do you do to get more punch in your photos before they go to Picasa? ……. In my D3400 I press Menu and go into ‘Set Picture Control’ then chose ‘Vivid’ for deeper colors.  Keeping with ‘Vivid’ I then adjusted the picture to be a tad sharper, increased the contrast slightly, and added a bit of saturation.  in ‘Image Quality’ I set it to ‘JPEG Fine’.  All these settings are done in Program mode.  I never use ‘Auto’ mode on any of my cameras.  I also use ‘Center Weighted Metering’ or ‘Spot Metering’ instead of ‘Matrix Metering’.  I generally leave my ISO at 400 and try to remember to bring it down to 100 ISO if I’m standing still taking landscape photos.  Mostly I forget to do that.  Now I’m not saying these tweaks I’ve made are necessarily the best but in my world of techno confusion they seem to work not too bad for me.  But here’s my dilemma……it seems no matter what I do I always seem to find fault in my photos somewhere.  Too light, too dark, too yellow, too blue, not sharp enough, photos look fuzzy, too much contrast or not enough.  I drive myself wonkers most every day with my Picasa photo editing program trying to get colors, contrast, and lighting right but so far it’s still an enjoyable hobby for me and I will continue to happily drive myself slightly wonkers most every day:))

bobm in a comment asked:  ‘When we were in BS in mid-January we saw early signs of wildflowers. Is anything starting to pop up yet’? …… Aside from a few very small clusters of some kind of pink violets or something along the roadside nothing has really popped yet other than 1 red Ocotillo bloom we saw on our walk this morning.  In our area lots of long green slender Desert Lily leaves are above ground now but no white blooms yet.  We have been in Borrego Springs several times when desert flowers were blooming and I was able to find a few of my posts showing some of the desert flower blooms……Early Morning Photo Group, A 2 Canyon Day, All The Way From Oregon, Flowers In Coyote Canyon, Days Are Getting Too Short.  Wished I had got myself on the ball years ago and put albums together of all my photos in various categories (desert flowers) but alas I didn’t and to try to go through tens of thousands of photos now is just too daunting a task.

It was a week ago Monday morning we left our overnight spot on Rockhouse Road and re-located to where we are now.  That means Monday morning will mark one whole week in the same place.  That’s pretty good for us so far this winter.  Still not missing our Congress House but both agree we will be glad to get ourselves back to our home in Bayfield Ontario sometime next month.  In the meantime we are thoroughly enjoying this warm southern California weather.  Looking ahead at the long range forecast there is not a day under 70F for the next week and a half.  Nice:))
