IT’S TIME TO GET THE BIG WHEELS ROLLING AGAIN

DSC_3354

Word came down from headquarters that we will be rolling out of Lone Pine Tuesday morning so that meant groceries & laundry in town today.

We had considered a day trip up to Bishop & Mono Lake but it’s 55 miles to Bishop one way.  Rather than do a rushed day trip we would like to return to this area next winter & boon dock somewhere around Bishop & Mono Lake.  That way we can relax & take our time to have a look around in that neighborhood.

DSC_0103

When we leave Lone Pine Tuesday morning it will mark the beginning of our long homeward journey.  We still have a list of places to see here in California, Arizona & New Mexico along the way but once we clear New Mexico it will be pedal to the metal for home.  Until we reach Texas we’re in no hurry to get back to Bayfield so we’ll doddle around here in the southwest for as long as we can.  And where are we headed next?   Well, we’ll consider our options again in the morning but we do have some nice places up our sleeve:))

DSC_3350

Signs of Spring are in the air here with buds sprouting on many trees.  The apple blossoms are looking especially beautiful.  Seen & heard my first Robin Sunday night  & we have seen some Daffodils & Dandelions.

Despite the snowy mountain scenes we are very warm here lower down in the Owens Valley.  Short sleeve shirt stuff as long as there is no breeze.  Daytime temps have been averaging around 65 to 70F with nights around 50F.   At high noon in Lone Pine this morning we were at 79F & 10 minutes later at our campsite higher up we were showing 67F on the Jeep’s thermometer.   As always, it depends on altitude in the southwest.  We could feel the temps dropping as we drove up toward Mount Whitney Sunday morning & saw a few patches of snow.  Half an hour later we were in short sleeves with windows down cruising through the Alabama Hills.

Slipped into Lone Pine first thing this morning & did laundry, grabbed a Spinach sandwich at McDonalds, groceries at Josephs, hit a few little stores & took some pics around town.

DSC_0106DSC_0105DSC_0110DSC_0117DSC_0141DSC_0108DSC_0123DSC_0126DSC_0110DSC_0128DSC_0112

THESE PLAQUES COMMEMORATE LONE PINES ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL WITH THE NAMES OF ACTORS, STUNTMEN, DIRECTIORS, ETC WHO HAVE ATTENDED THE FESTIVAL OVER THE YEARS.  I SAW CLAYTON MOORES NAME (LONE RANGER) AMONGST MANY OTHERS…IF YOUR IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD NEXT OCTOBER, DROP IN AT LONE PINE'S ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL

Because we are rolling out in the morning Kelly opted out of the mountain road drive to get a few things done around the rig.   That was OK because I wanted to slip back over to Movie Road & look for the Lone Ranger site I had heard about.  My GPS told me I was in the neighborhood but alas, I did not find it.  With the picture of the spot in mind instead of photo in my hand I just couldn’t remember the rock formations.  I did take a photo of one spot but when I checked it with the photo on the computer here it was not a match.  Drats!!  Bet if I went over there again I could find it next time, but………

TURNS OUT THIS WAS NOT THE SPOT:((

Anyway, I did have piece of paper with a rough map showing a general area where the Gene Autry, Gary Cooper & Hopalong Cassidy rocks were.  Well, sort of.  There are thousands of rocks & formations out here so I just took some photos of the general areas.

Gotta say again how beautiful this area is.  Well, at least to me it is.  Some folks may prefer the flatlands of Texas, some the greenery of Florida & some an ocean vista somewhere but for me it’s the rocks, deserts & mountains.  The rock formations I was climbing around on today have to be seen in person.  My photos are no where near to capturing the true beauty of this land.  You just got to come out here & experience this vast land for yourself.

I THINK SCENES FROM ‘CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE’ WERE FILMED HERE

Said a final good-bye to all my old boyhood Cowboy Pals & headed south back down Movie Road.  Right on Whitney-Portal Road & then left on Horseshoe Meadow past our Tuttle Creek campground & started my long climb up the mountain road.  Well, my climb ended abruptly about 5 miles later.  Up over a hill, around a right hand curve & into a gully….and that was it.  Gate across the road with a sign hanging on it saying, ‘Road Closed Due To Winter Storms.’  Drats again!!!!  I had heard this road switch-backed itself all the way up the mountain to a meadow where hang gliders hung out.   But, it was not to be today so it was back down the mountain I went & 5 minutes later I was back at the rig.

I really wished I could give this great Tuttle Creek campground a two thumbs up but unfortunately I can’t because they have done a very stupid thing here.  Five totally ridiculous speed bumps are angled in at various distances along the single half mile asphalt road leading in to the camp ground.  Even a straight across speed bump is better than an angled one.  Any RV’er knows how bad an angled bump or rut can be on a Motor Home or Trailer.  Each wheel passes over the bump separately & that sets up that violent rocking side to side motion that twists your coach, scatters your dishes & scrambles your shorts!!  Kelly was talking to the camp host today who said the Park is going to be closed for 2 months beginning in May for upgrades including a Dump Station.    New picnic tables replacing the old ones & metal fire rings will be installed instead of the stone fire pits.  All sites will be leveled as well.  Yaaaay on that one!!  No electric or water at the sites but there are (locked) taps along the road.  We hear there is a new water system going in as well.  But, what’s the point in doing all that when you have speed bumps tearing apart people’s rigs trying to come in or out of here.  Oh, & one other very stupid decision somebody made here.  The road is waaaay too narrow for two rigs to pass.   Somebody would have to back up a long way on twisty winding road.  Before asphalting it they should have widened the road.  Can’t believe someone in a responsible position made such a bad error.  Obviously the powers that be in these matters have never driven an RV!!!!

ONE OF 5 MISERABLE & ILL CONCEIVED SPEED BUMPS…PLUS NARROW ROAD!!

ONE OF TUTTLE CREEK’S OUTHOUSE BUILDINGS

All said & done though & aside from those 2 gross oversights we think this is a great scenic campground.  For the nearly 6 days we were here we have had only the sounds of birds, wind in the lone pine tree & the babbling of a mountain stream nearby.  A very special place indeed & will go down as one of the most scenic campsites we have ever had.  By the way we were in site number 76 which is about the closest one can get to the Sierra Nevada mountains at this campground.

For Campground reviews in this area & others check out RAMBLIN' RALPH'S RV ROAMINGS.  It was RR who put us on to this Tuttle Creek campground.  He responded to our Boondocking question in RV NET FORUM:))

JEAN & SKIP are into some bad weather on their trek home to Vancouver Island.  For sure it will make there arrival home all that much nicer.

Not sure where we will end up Tuesday night but if you don’t see a blog you will know we have landed in a ‘no Verizon signal’ zone.  I will do a post anyway but might have to wait a day until we can find a Verizon signal.  Until then….Adios my friends & we’ll see you on the flip side….10-4:))

JEEPING AROUND IN THE ALABAMA HILLS

DSC_0049-1

It is clouds that give our Earth’s sky it’s personality & bring forth from we humans ooohs & awes at sunrise & sunset.  There are a lot of ooohs & awes here in the great Southwest:))

DSC_0020

Decided to head the Jeep up Whitney Portal road this morning & see how far up into the mountains we could get.  It’s a steady climb upwards to Mount Whitney & when we saw our first Bear caution sign we knew we were into the tree line.  A series of road signs soon told us the road ahead was closed due to snow so we pulled into a large parking area with a lot of cars in it.  Found out from a rock climber there that a lot of the cars belonged to fellow rock climbers.  These young folks loaded themselves down with heavy climbing gear & then hiked up the closed road for 3 miles before even beginning their rugged rock climbing adventures.  There are some things that are totally inconceivable to me I had just heard about another one.

DSC_0056DSC_0055DSC_0057DSC_0059DSC_0062DSC_0061DSC_0063

Noticed a dirt road dropping off the mountain in the direction of Lone Pine so we pointed the Jeep’s nose downward on Hogback Road & enjoyed the long winding run back down into the Alabama Hills.  Turns out we linked right up with Movie Road & it wasn’t long & we were in familiar territory.

TURNS OUT THE TWO FOLKS IN THIS PICTURE WERE FROM ROCHESTER NY & THAT IS JUST ABOUT WHERE KELLY IS FROM IN SPENCERPORT

I was showing Kelly some of the movie locations along Movie Road when she noticed some rock climbers high up on a rock face.   We Jeeped ourselves over to the base of the rock, ate our egg salad sandwiches & watched the climbers for awhile.  For the life of me I don’t know why people do things like that.

We have been here in the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine California about 5 days now & from what we have seen we both agree that this is the greatest place we have traveled to so far.  The rocky hills with their rugged beauty are criss crossed with miles & miles of back roads & endless Jeep trails.  With the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west & the Inyo Mountains to the east we are in a large valley with Owens Lake visible to the South.  The beauty of the Alabama Hills is beyond description.

DSC_0085DSC_0051DSC_0091

With 2 of the highest rock climbers back safely on the ground we headed the final distance down to the Valley floor & the little town of Lone Pine.  Stopped at the Visitor’s Center to fill some water jugs, grabbed a tank of gas & drove to the Northern end of town in search of a Cairn marking the spot where 27 residents of Lone Pine lay buried after a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the town on March 26th 1872.  The Cairn stands atop the very fault line that fractured the town.

It was mid afternoon before we arrived back at the rig.  The clouds were sitting right on the mountain tops with shafts of sunlight playing across the snowy peaks.  Tomorrow we will head up a mountain road just south of us that we have read is very exciting….if you like heights:))

NIKON D40 AT 300mm

Had a few problems with Live Writer/Picasa regarding my photos in Saturday night’s blog so if anyone clicked on the post early & found the pics a bit fuzzy, the problem is fixed now.  Also had a question about the movie photo pics I used to find the locations.  If you stop at Lone Pine’s Chamber of Commerce or the BEVERLY & JIM ROGERS MUSEUM you can pick up a self guided booklet to the sites.  Each site has a black & white photo in the booklet with directions how to get to the locations.  I simply laid the booklet on the Jeep bumper or on a nearby rock & photographed the B&W photo plus the caption under it.   Nothing is marked at any of these movie locations so you have to do a bit of detective work to find the exact spots & that is part of the fun.  The booklet explains what rock formations to look for plus 5 of the locations are within short walking distance of each other:))

DSC_0040DSC_0041 DSC_0042

And, we just picked up another map showing some more movie & TV related locations near Movie Road so I will get myself on over there shortly to see what I can see.  Of particular interest will be the Lone Ranger ambush site from the 1938 movie starring Lee Powell.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR AROUND HERE & I HEARD MY FIRST ROBIN THIS AFTERNOON.  BIRD ON THE ROCK IS A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD

Before I forget, someone had inquired about the GPS coordinates for the grassy BLM location we had last week just north of Joshua Tree.  They are: N34*10 13592 by W116*13.7468 (if I got it right)

THIS OAK TREE IS FROM SHERWOOD FOREST IN ENGLAND

Very early Sunday morning I actually saw ‘time fly.’  My day started at 1:55 a.m. according to the computer.  Motormouse woke me up needing a snuggle so that was that & I was up for the day.  At precisely 2 a.m. & in the blink of an eye I saw the computer clock jump forward to 3 a.m. as we switched to Daylight Saving Time.  Because my body is still set on Ontario time this moving ahead is a bonus for me.

Felicia & Jeff over at HIGGINS POD have made some modifications to their newer travel trailer & are anxious to haul it out of winter storage & get it on the road for some early Spring camping.  Russ over at TRAVELS IN THERAPY is having some indecision problems in thinking about future travel plans.  Revisit all the old familiar places or forge on to new destinations.  It’s a common problem for a lot of us hitch itch people for sure………

GROANER’S CORNER:))    As a blonde crawls out of her wrecked jeep, the local sheriff asks her what happened.

The blonde began, "It was the strangest thing! I looked up and saw a tree, so I swerved to the right. Then I saw another tree, so I swerved to left. Then there was another tree, and another and another ..."

The sheriff thought for a minute and then said, "I don’t know how to tell you this, but the only thing even resembling a tree on this road for thirty miles is your air freshener!!”
