TODAY’S WINDSTORM GOES INTO OUR BOOKS AS…..THE WORST WINDS EVER!!

INDIAN HORSES CROSSING A HILL BEHIND OUR RIG

Sunday’s winds subsided enough in the night to allow us some sleep but at first light they picked up again dropping the temperatures.  Cloudy with a few sunny breaks & we had to dress warmly to ward off the chilly winds.  Local weather advisory was out for 50 mph winds this afternoon & little did we know they were bearing down on us like a speeding freight train at that very moment.

3 DOGS HARASSING THE HORSES

Figured we would drive into the little town of Chinle which is just outside the campground, grab a bite to eat, get a few groceries & hit the canyon’s north side driving tour.  We did grab a bite but we never did make it to the grocery store.

THUNDERBIRD LODGE WHERE WE ARE GETTING OUR WIFI SIGNAL

While eating we were suddenly hit with huge wind gusts turning the view outside into an instant brown sand storm.  We see these kinds of things in winter back home & call them white outs due to blowing snow.  Without further ado we quickly headed for the Jeep & raced back to the campsite expecting to see our satellite dish on the ground & both slide awnings torn to bits.

RACING BACK TO THE RIG TO GET THE SLIDES IN

The tiny awning was billowing like I’ve never seen it before.  We got out of the Jeep OK but when I opened rig’s door the wind caught it throwing me backwards into Kelly behind me who was hanging on to her cup of coffee.  Lid flew off the cup spraying coffee all over Kelly.  Managed to hang onto the door long enough while she squeezed inside, raced back to the bedroom, hit the switch & retracted the slide before the awning ripped off.  I remained outside for a minute before trying to get myself in.  Took me 2 tries to get & hold the door open long enough to duck inside.  I knew if the wind blew the door out of my hands it would dash it against the side of the rig & smash the glass out of it.

STRUGGLING AGAINST THE WIND TO GET THE LMB OFF THE DISH…WIND GUSTS WERE TOO BAD TO GET THE DISH OFF THE TRIPOD

I have blogged about bad winds many times before & we have been in some very nasty ones but this wind today goes into our books as the worst wind we have ever experienced.  Anybody caught out on the highway today with an RV is going to be in some very major trouble.  We are so fortunate to have got in here & set up at this campground when we did yesterday.  We hear Flagstaff was hit hard today & we had just past through there Saturday afternoon.  We sure dodged a nasty weather bullet there.  They had blowing winds & driving snow.

The campground we are in sits below a bluff & is a bit protected area but if it’s this bad here it must be a total nightmare for people on the road.  I just have a feeling there is going to be plenty of wind damage when this finally lets up.  Our Motor Home has never rocked side to side this bad before.  At one point I did manage to get outside & take the electronic part of the satellite dish off but about 5 minutes later the wind gusts had twisted the tripod legs bending the dish down at an awkward angle.  Twenty minutes later another wind gust totally flattened the dish snapping off one of the tripod legs completely.  That’s the end of our Canadian Star Choice satellite TV for this trip:((  Am I complaining about all this?  Nope, just stating the facts.  I would sooner be right here in the  middle of a big darn old dusty wind storm any day as opposed to sitting at home during a big old miserable snow storm!!  And, would you believe that due to the high winds & blowing sand plus a small opening in our poor fitting kitchen window we now have sand dunes on our kitchen counter top!!

THIS COLORFUL RIGGED ROLLED INTO THE CAMPSITE AFTER THE WINDS DIED DOWN

I remember a saying from the old wild west gunfighter days that went something like, ‘no matter how fast you think you are, there is always somebody faster!!’  Same thing applies to bad days.  No matter how bad your day is or was there is probably someone somewhere who has had a more badder one.  (ya ya I know about the grammar) Thought we had a bad one a couple days ago until I read SASSY'S ON DA ROAD.  And then, if Sassy’s day wasn’t bad enough, I read Malone’s post at THE MOHO & OTHER TRAVELING TALES.  The post is entitled….’Vandalized!!’

ANOTHER GERMAN VEHICLE PULLS IN

We pretty much remained trapped in the rig for the entire day.  Kelly read for awhile & I sat here with the computer on my lap dozing off about 6 dozen times only to be awakened by the severe rocking of the wind battered coach every few minutes.

I wrote the above paragraphs this afternoon while the wind was beating us up.  It is now after supper, much colder, raining a bit & the wind has diminished.  I brought the broken tripod in as soon as it did & with a couple sticks for splints & about 6.4 miles of duct tape kind of made a shaky repair on the leg.

IMG_0222

Took it outside & set it all up again & surprisingly enough we have TV tonight.  If it remains up for the night that will be a bonus & if my repair lasts any longer than that it will be a complete miracle.  And if it lasts a week that will be impossible!!  Actually the leg only has to last us a few days longer while we are here at Canyon de Chelly (d’ Shay) because once we hit the road for home we will not be in any one place long enough to ever set it up again.  This is the last planned stop of our trip this winter.  No idea how long we will be here but it will be pedal to the metal once we leave Canyon de Chelly for home.

I KNOW IT ISN’T TOO PRETTY BUT AT LEAST WE GOT TV TONIGHT & I’LL BE ABLE TO WATCH ‘CORNER GAS:))’

AT THE COTTONWOOD CAMPGROUND NEAR CANYON DE CHELLY ARIZONA

IMG_0209

MY TIRED LITTLE CAMERA BUDDY

When I was out with Max at 4 a.m this morning I was heartened to see stars overhead in a clear Moon filled night sky.  Picked up my spirits right away & believe you me, my spirits sure needed some picking up after Saturdays long frustrating day.

I must admit there are definitely some nice perks at an RV Park.  A limitless supply of water & lots of electricity are the two big things.  That means longer showers with lots of water & a chance to run our electric heaters.  Even fired up my electric shaver this morning & had a go at trimming up my shaggy beard.  Electric shaver 1.  Beard 0.

I would give the METEOR CRATER RV PARK on the south side of I-40 west of Winslow a definite two thumbs up.  Very nicely landscaped & well kept park.  Big double compound dog area.  Gas & Diesel pumps with a nice bright & spacious igloo styled office, general store, some RV parts, free coffee & friendly hospitality.

YEP, I PARKED A LITTLE CLOSE TO THAT PINE TREE ALRIGHT

We took on water, dumped tanks, picked up some fuel & were mobile by 9 a.m.  Decided to take the 5 mile drive south of the Park to have a look at the METEOR CRATER SITE.  Pulled into a large parking lot alongside about have a dozen other visiting RV’s.  Thought we had smelled propane a few minutes earlier & when we stopped the smell quickly became stronger.  We had switched our fridge from electric back to propane this morning & for the second time the fridge must have failed to ignite.  Kelly quickly shut off the water heater & pilot light.  We opened the door & all windows & vents.  Jumped out & shut off the propane valve on the big tank.  Smell was still strong so I jumped back into the drivers seat & immediately pulled out of the parking lot away from the other rigs in case we had a problem.  Figured it would be good to get air moving through the coach.  It worked & all fumes were dispersed.  Stopped in the RV parking lot near I-40 & turned the main tank on again.  Kelly tried the fridge propane/electric switch & this time the igniter worked.  It’s the second time in a month we have had that propane ignition problem.

THE UPHEAVED EARTH OF METEOR CRATER CAN BE SEEN AHEAD WHILE A GROUP OF PEOPLE WALK ALONG THE RIM

We climbed aboard I-40 heading east for a propane fill up at a Flying J in Winslow Az.  Flying J’s are not one of my favorite places & this one was a good example of why.  Couldn’t believe how badly designed this one was.  The parking lot was a large game of musical vehicles weaving & bobbing & jockeying for position.  I couldn’t believe they had the propane station in a gas & diesel island lane & then added a dump station in the mix as well.  What a jumble of mass confusion for everyone.  Took us over half an hour to finally reach the propane station while the 3 RV’s ahead of us fueled up & one guy beside us dumped his black tank into a totally filthy fuel island pipe.  Sure glad to get out of there.

WAITING FOR PROPANE BEHIND A RIG REFUELING WHILE OFF TO THE RIGHT ANOTHER RIG DUMPS HIS BLACK TANK

Windy day again as we bucked our way east on I-40 until reaching the highway 191 exit ramp heading North.  Nice to finally get off the Interstate for awhile.  Up until heading north on 191 the scenery had been really boring since leaving Kingman Saturday.  Flat land with shallow rolling hills & few trees.  Reminded me some long drives we’ve had in Texas.

We lost the little bit of sunshine we had way back in Winslow earlier in the morning & the further north we went the thicker the cloud cover seemed to get.  The drive up to Chinle was far more scenic than our previous drive on I-40.  Nice to see trees & greenery again along with some high Mesas.  Because the hills were higher on northbound 191 & the valleys lower,  our Chevy Vortec engine had to put in a little bit of overtime today.

ON HIGHWAY 191 NORTH HEADING FOR CANYON DE CHELLY

Reached the town of Chinle about 1:30 & was surprised to find it bigger than I had anticipated.  We headed straightaway for Canyon De Chelly’s (pronounced De Shay) Visitor Center.  Picked up some brochures, local information & directions to the Cottonwood Campground just below the Center. CANYON DE CHELLY

KELLY CHECKS FOR A WIFI SIGNAL FROM THE THUNDERBIRD LODGE AT TOP RIGHT OF PICTURE

This is a free campground with no amenities like electric & water.  It does have paved roads & reasonably level paved sites .  A picnic table & BBQ are included.  And the campground does have a dump station.  No Verizon signal here so we looked for a site fairly near the Thunderbird Lodge.  We had inquired about that at the Visitor’s Center & were told we could tap into the Lodge’s Wifi if close enough.  It’s a bit slow but at least we’re online.  Don’t know how I will make out publishing the blog with photos later on but guess I’ll find out.   There is a Burger King in town with Wifi so if I end up with a load of pics over the next few days I may have to head myself on over to BK for a midnight hamburger:))

OUR PRESENT SITE AT THE COTTONWOOD CAMPGROUND JUST OUTSIDE OF CANON DE CHELLY

Joe & Nancy over at the RVING BEACH BUMS have themselves a new Jeep & have been out getting a little desert dust on themselves up around the Wickenburg area.  Always like to see people with a sense of adventure about them.

Sure am feeling better today than I did by the end of yesterday.  Those long days on the road mixed with a poor night’s sleep sure makes for a crusty old Cursmudgeon alright!!

GROANER’S CORNER:((  And a few thoughts on marriage…..

-Marriage is not a word. It is a sentence--a life sentence.
-Marriage is very much like a violin; after the sweet music is over, the strings are attached.
-Marriage is a thing which puts a ring on a woman's finger and two under the man's eyes.
-Marriage certificate is just another word for a work permit.

HEADING FOR THE ARIZONA STATE LINE THIS MORNING (KELLY TOOK SOME OF TODAY’S PICS)

The winds howled all night so neither Kelly or I had a good night’s sleep.  Saturday morning dawned with a heavy cloud cover & it was cold.  Despite a wind advisory for the area we decided to hook up & get out of town.  We did not want to be stuck inside all day being continuously punched & kicked by the relentless wind gusts.  At 7:15 I had the Jeep hooked up & we hit the road.

DSC_0274

LAKE MEADE APPROACHING THE HOOVER DAM

Up until a few days ago I figured we had to go back through Las Vegas to get ourselves back down to I-40.  I was not looking forward to that!!  You can imagine how happy I was when I found out the very road we were camped beside actually went all the way down to the Hoover dam & Arizona without going anywhere Las Vegas.  Can’t remember the highway number but it’s a beautiful scenic drive all the way with very little traffic & an excellent paved surface.

DSC_0266

The wind gusts harassed us big time all the way on the winding roads so it was a bit of a nail biter at times.  Kept the speed down to 40 for the whole 60 mile drive to the new bridge span over the Colorado River.  Bad road signage in the Dam area had us guessing how to get across the river but we managed to guess right & miraculously ended up crossing the new bridge span on highway 93 heading for Kingman Arizona.  The winds never let up & we fought it all the way to Kingman.

DSC_0264

At a gas stop in Kingman we noticed the electric plug between the rig & the Jeep had become pulled out of the Motor Home & had dragged on the road totally destroying it.  Luckily I had put a spare cord in the Jeep before leaving home last November.  We climbed aboard I-40 & headed east.  For the rest of the day we fought heavy crosswinds all the way to near Winslow Arizona.

ALMOST GOT OURSELVES WEDGED IN A RAILWAY UNDERPASS NEAR FLAGSTAFF

Our plan had been to find a boon docking spot somewhere around Williams for the night & then head up highway 89 Sunday into Monument Valley for a few days.  But, it was not to be:((  The County Park we had planned to stay at was still closed for the winter & to make matters worse it was located on a dead end road.  Yep, had to unhitch the car to get the Motor Home turned around.  Not a happy camper!!  And we nearly got ourselves wedged in tunnel coming & going too.  Second option was another Park area in Flagstaff but after becoming turned around somewhere between highway 89 south & 17 to wherever we found ourselves back up I-40 heading further east.

THIS SET UP PARKED BEHIND US FRIDAY NIGHT

It was 89 North that we had planned to take up to Tuba City on our Monument Valley drive but now we found ourselves well east of that, very tired & very discouraged.  It was late afternoon & combined with our lack of sleep & rough day of fighting tough cross winds we resorted to our last & least favored option of the day.  An RV Park!! Meteor Crater RV Park is a few miles west of Winslow Arizona & for all intents & purposes looks like a clean & neat little place.  It’s a good place for us to re-access our travel plans for the next few days.

The weather is not cooperating & the heavy cloud cover was still with us as well as the wind when we checked into the RV Park.  Weatherman said no sun until Wednesday at the earliest but when Kelly went outside with the Motormouse around 8 tonight she said the Moon was up.  I went outside & sure enough we were under clear skies.  Didn’t have the energy to haul out my camera equipment for a Moon shot so just took in the beautiful moonrise for awhile & came back inside.

Anyway, in an effort to keep this blog short let me just say we are mulling over a revamped version of our Monument Valley & Canyon De Chelly plans tonight & if we wake up to a sunny morning we will likely head on up that way tomorrow to see what we can see.  But, if the predicted storm arrives, we just might……well, we just might.

Ok, that’s enough out of me after a very long & stressful day………zzzzzzzzzzzzz

OUR SCENERY SURE HAS CHANGED AS WE APPROACH WINSLOW AZ.
