A HAPPY REUNION TODAY……HAD BEEN QUITE AWHILE SINCE KELLY LAST SAW HER YOUNGEST DAUGHTER

IMG_1148
WE PASS THIS SPOT EVERY MORNING ON OUR WALK:))
Pheebs had an appointment with the Vet this morning. Nothing serious, just her annual rabies shot, tag, & signed paper in case she is asked for her papers at the border. To date we have never been asked for doggy papers at the border, either going or coming back.

ENJOYING SOME WARM OCTOBER SUNSHINE
Mark, over at BOX CANYON BLOG has pretty much wrapped up his remodelling job on the rear interior of their Lazy Daze RV. Nice job & he has lots of photos. Oh how I wish I was more of a handy man type guy, but that requires a lot of patience. And, speaking of patience, I can't imagine myself having enough of that stuff to do the double deck sanding & staining job MERIKAY & husband Craig are currently working on. Yikes.

THIS IS THE BACKGROUND PHOTO WE HAVE ON OUR DESKTOP COMPUTER
Had an interesting email from a long time reader about photo retouching. In the email, reader says, " I work at a pre-press studio where we do mostly image retouching. I can tell you that 90% of all images that go thru here have some retouching done to them. It may be as small as adjusting skin tones right up to full blown adding mountains or rivers etc. I find it funny when I read about people complaining that an image in a magazine looks "Photoshoped" If they only knew how extensive it is".  Thanks J:))

LITTLE KAYAKS, BIG LAKE
Decided to have us look on the RV NET FORUM at what fellow RV'ers had to say about the Blue Ridge Parkway. Found 13 pages on that topic & it's a mixed bag of opinions. We're not ones to shy away from a few tougher driving conditions but we will have to pour some more thought into that route. We'll decide on things in a couple weeks when we are approaching the northern end of the Parkway region.  We appreciate the feedback.  And Alice, I will answer your question about ‘dark backgrounds’ in my next post:))

AFTER FIGURING IT OUT, THIS IS THE FIRST PHOTO KELLY TOOK WITH THE BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK ON OUR WAY TO SEE UNCLE HARRY TUESDAY…NEXT, SHE WILL HAVE TO SHOW ME HOW TO USE THE PLAYBOOK CAMERA…….:))

Kelly's youngest daughter & her husband Ricardo, moved from Spain to Vancouver about a year & a half ago. They just re-located to Cambridge Ontario last week & late this afternoon came to DEER PARK LODGE  to spend a few days in the Bayfield area. Today was only the second time in four & a half years that Kelly & Rebecca have seen each other.  I hadn’t seen Rebecca & Ricardo since Kelly’s SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY back in early April of 2008.  They had supper at our place tonight & both Kelly & I were trying to think of the last time we had someone here for supper………had to be a couple years ago.  We will be seeing more of Rebecca & Ricardo over the next few days:))

I THOUGHT THE DUCKS TOOK A PRETTY GOOD QUACK AT A DODO TOPIC:))

DSC_0018

I think it is the best time of the year to be in the woods.  Excessive summer heat is gone as well as humidity.  And, no bugs!!  Prettiest time of the year for sure & with the sun shining through all the Autumn leaves it sets up a golden glow in the air like something out of fairy tale.

THIS IS THE ROAD WE TRAVEL TO & FROM GODERICH ONTARIO

There's a couple reasons I prefer to take the Jeep each week when we go to visit Uncle Harry. First, I just like driving it better than the Santa Fe. Second reason is.......speed!! Because the Jeep is not built for speed it is most comfortable just bumpiding along somewhere around the speed limit. The Santa Fe however, runs so smooth that every time I drive it I am up to 75 & 80 mph in a 60 mph zone in no time. With the amount of roving radar units on the road nowadays it's very easy to get picked off for speeding. I've been lucky, so think I'll just stick to our Tortoise Jeep & leave the Santa Fe Hare in the car port. Uncle Harry was fine today by the way:))

Anyone looking for a mighty fine diesel Motorhome at a competitive price? Peter & Bea over at AMERICAN TRAVELER are downsizing & decided awhile back to sell their rig. Peter has info & photos in a link on his site. They are located on Campobello Island on the East coast but will soon be headed out across the country for the American South-West.
DSC_4622

I thought the DUCKS took a pretty good quack at explaining the virtues of a composting toilet as opposed to a conventional RV toilet & black tank system a few days ago.   Lots of good dodo info on the post & folks may be able to pick up some pointers, re-adjust some habits, & make a clean sweep of things:))

DSC_8776

I particularly enjoyed GEOGYPSY'S take on Blogging this morning. I can sooooo identify with her thoughts when she writes, "I never thought I’d share so much of my life online." "At first I thought I was blogging for me. A way to keep track of the things I do and places I go. Then people began to actually read what I wrote sometimes leaving encouraging comments. I even get emails from people asking about the places I’ve seen and written about. Now I realize I’m actually writing for you. Sharing information and experiences in the hopes of helping others enjoy a special place, or at least allowing you to live vicariously through my words and photos".......... And, speaking of photos, be sure to slip on over to Gaelyn's site & see some great ones:))

DSC_7121

RV SUE & HER CANINE CREW are in an area of the South-West right now that Kelly & I really enjoyed a couple years ago. Lone Pine California & the Alabama Hills. This is where many of Hollywood's movies & TV series have been filmed over the years, especially the old Westerns. Nestled into the East side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains there is a lot of history here. I spent a great & memorable afternoon looking for old movie sites one day with just a small brochure I had obtained at the HOPALONG CASSIDY ROY ROGERS, GENE AUTRY COWBOY MOVIE MUSEUM. My link for that day is here at, IN SEARCH OF RANDOLPH SCOTT'S CAMPFIRE & I will also include a few more links if anyone is interested in seeing some of the truly spectacular scenery or learning about some of the historical attractions such as the little known World War 2 Japanese Internment camp,  MANZANAR.....THE WAY IT WAS,  located on the northern outskirts of Lone Pine.  Also,  JEEPING AROUND IN THE ALABAMA HILLS & our last day in Lone Pine, IT'S TIME TO GET THE BIG WHEELS ROLLING AGAIN.

LOOKING WEST ACROSS THE ALABAMA HILLS TO THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS

I thought GYPSY left some good advice in her comment on my Monday post. When I hear the word 'Parkway' in a road name, I generally assume it is a 4 lane highway. Re-checking my map again I do indeed see that the Blue Ridge Parkway is, as Gypsy said, only two lanes. And, not necessarily Motorhome friendly. In DONNA C'S words, "a little dicey". Think we will wisely stick to I-81 as first planned.  Thanks for the head’s up guys:))

Picasa Photo Tip: For a deeper rich looking photo, try adding a bit of 'Shadow' with the shadow slider bar. Below that you will see 'Color Temperature'. Move that slider bar left & it takes any excessive yellow out of your photo. Move it to the right & you can add a bit of yellow if needed. Works nice to give a photo a bit of warmth sometimes.

PUTTING OUR ROUTE TOGETHER TODAY & CONSIDERING READERS TRAVEL SUGGESTIONS

DSC_0009

PHEEBS AGREED TO POSE FOR THESE PHOTO TO SHOW HOW BIG THE MUSHROOM IS BEHIND HER

Our 7 a.m. temperature this morning was 44F & noticed in Congress Arizona, which is 3 hours behind us, it was 67 degrees. Nice:)) However, we are not fooled. We know in a couple months the cold desert Arizona nights will once again be upon us. Plenty of sunshine this morning but needed more than my T-shirt & flannel shirt to keep me warm against the cold winds. A lined nylon jacket did the trick.

`

OOOOPS, MUSHROOM FALL OVER:((

While doing a few outside things for a neighbor this morning I noticed a small bird on the ground just sitting there looking up at me. Birds do not usually do that so gently bent down & picked up the little fellow who did not appear to be flustered or injured. Figured he had flown into a window & was temporarily stunned. Wished him well & whispered a few soft words of hope & encouragement before carrying him a few feet away out of the cold shade & setting him down in a warm patch of sun. About 20 minutes later as I approached to see how he was doing, he gave himself a shake, spread his wings, tweeted a little ‘thanks Pal’ & flew on up to a nearby tree branch. I like when stories have happy endings. On the same bird note, I noticed this morning our winter Dark-eyed Juncos have arrived back from the far north to spend another winter season here in southern Ontario.

IMG_0273

Several commenters have suggested following the NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY but after checking the maps I see it runs south from Nashville & we will be heading west from Nashville. But, you never know, our travel plans are not written in stone. Kelly & I did travel a part of this Parkway near Tupelo Mississippi back in January of 2005 on our way back from BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK in southwest Texas. Beautiful piece of road with scenery too match. I remember thinking it was hard to believe there was such a nice 4 lane highway in existence like that. Can't remember where we got on or off the Parkway. Those were the days before blogs.

OUR STREET, & WE LIVE AT THE END ON THE LEFT

Ed, from THE PEREGRINATING GRAYBEARD has suggested GETTYSBURG, Skyline Drive in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK, and the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY to check out along our route. I do remember briefly stopping at Gettysburg back in the late 70's while on a Company bus trip one time. I did spend time today with my Atlas & on-line maps pouring over all these suggestions & options.  I love grabbing my magnifying glass & spending time with my Atlas connecting roads & routes to towns, cities, & scenic drives.

OUR DEPARTURE DATE IS COMING UP FAST

DSC_0035
Yikes, it kinda dawned on me this morning that we only have about a week & a half left before we head out. That departure date is suddenly coming on fast. Plans are still the same. We will head to Spencerport NY first to visit with Kelly's Mother for a bit. Talked by phone to my Aunt Jean yesterday, her health is improving, & she is optimistic about flying out see us in Arizona again this winter. That means we will not be driving down to Sarasota Florida after leaving Kelly’s Mom’s place.
DSC_0033
From Spencerport, I had considered heading west through Buffalo, Cleveland, & Cincinnati, but think we'll probably stick to our original idea of heading south to Knoxville Tennessee & then sliding west through Nashville & Memphis. I’m sure we’ll be in for some far nicer scenery that way as we travel down through the Appalachian Mountains.  I’ve never been through that neck of the woods.  Once west of Memphis we'll play it by ear as to which way we will go from there. Maybe our old familiar route, maybe not. I always like traveling with the flexibility to make changes along the way. Traveling strictly from point A to point B under the restrictions of time limits & destination reservations just does not work for either one of us. Guess it's maybe some of that adventurous Gypsy blood we both seem to have in us.  But, in all fairness, I must say, we do occasionally have our tough times at the end of a long driving day trying to figure out & find a spot to pull in for the night.

Turkey with all the fixins & pumpkin pie for our Thanksgiving today. Nice & quiet, just the way we like it.  Kelly & I both stopped eating potatoes quite awhile ago so it was nice to have mashed potatoes with turkey gravy tonight for a change.  Not very often I eat too much anymore but tonight was an exception.  Sun finally broke through the rain soaked clouds in late afternoon leaving our fiery leaved trees basking in a shiny blaze of splendid Autumn color.

A FEW MORE PICASA TIPS & DON’T FORGET TO ‘SAVE’ THOSE CHANGES

DSC_0003-3

FIERY AUTUMN WINDOW REFLECTIONS…BEN MILLER, ONTARIO

DSC_0001-2 DSC_0002-5

EXAMPLES OF COMPOSITION & LOOKING FOR A PHOTO WITHIN A PHOTO

Had us a cloudy overcast day with cold winds. One of those days I prefer to stay inside where it's warm & toasty. Also a good kind of morning to be inside having coffee with one of my two best friends. Met Jim at a Tim Horton's coffee shop in Clinton this morning for a four & quarter hour coffee. Now that is a long time to sit on a hard plastic seat without getting up. Of course we once again solved every one of life's little problems…..with no problem at all. This was my second coffee blow out this week. Wednesday night saw my other best friend, Richard & I spending nearly 4 hours once again discussing all the infinite details of life. Should mention that 'coffee blow-out' is an old term. Jim doesn't drink coffee at all anymore, I only have one de-calf & Richard might have two coffee's at most. I generally see my way clear to gobble myself down a carrot muffin at these events as well. The term 'coffee blow-out' comes from the old days when Jim & I would spend hours together in coffee shops hashing things out over multiple cups of coffee & endless packs of cigarettes. Both Jim & I gave up cigarettes many, many, years ago as did Richard:))

DSC_0004   DSC_0004

ORIGINAL ON LEFT… ‘STRAIGHTEN, HIGHLIGHT, FILL LIGHT, SHARPEN’ & ADDED A HEALTHY DOSE OF YELLOW ‘COLOR TEMPERATURE’ TO GIVE THOSE PINE NEEDLES THEIR TRUE COLOR

Couple important things to remember if you use any of the Picasa tools to edit your photos. You have to remember to 'SAVE' those changes. If you do not ‘SAVE’ the changes the photo will revert back to it's original state when you close the program. To ‘SAVE’ changes to an individual photo just right click on the photo with your mouse & click ‘SAVE’. To ‘SAVE’ changes to a bunch of photos all at once just go up to Edit & click. From the drop down menu chose Select All, right click on any one of the highlighted photos & click SAVE from the drop down menu. Remember, if you don't SAVE your changes, you will not be a happy camper. Also know that you can easily undo any of your changes & don't worry about screwing up your pictures. You can easily un-change any changes you have made to your photo.
DSC_7119   DSC_7119
ORIGINAL PHOTO ON LEFT IS 300mm FROM INSIDE OUR SUNROOM…USED, ‘STRAIGHTEN, AUTO CONTRAST, CROP, FILL LIGHT’ & ‘SHARPEN’ TO OBTAIN THE PHOTO ON RIGHT

Donna C from CAVE DWELLINGS in her comment wondered....."When you enter photos into a contest, can they tell if you have edited it with enhancing the colors, etc...We have a photo contest at our county fair..I am always afraid to edit any photo for a contest"………………………. Not being a photo contest person I don't really have an answer for this question except to say that each contest probably has it's own set of 'rules.' I do however, have an opinion about why photo editing is a realistic & integral part of photography.

DSC_7141   DSC_7141

NORTHERN FLICKER WOODPECKER…’STRAIGHTEN, CROP, HIGHLIGHT, SHARPENING, & A TOUCH OF SATURATION’  ALSO USED ‘RETOUCH’ TO TONE DOWN SOME HIGHLIGHTS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE WOODPECKER…PHOTO IS A BIT GRAINY BECAUSE I HAD TO BUMP UP THE ISO UP TO 1600 IN THE AFTERNOON’S FAILING LIGHT

First, the myth.....A camera records your subject exactly how the human eye sees it. Not so. No matter what make, model, or technology is packed into your camera, it does not compare to the human eye. The human eye can instantly take in scenery around you with great detail in the clouds as well as details in shadow areas right in front of you....a camera can't do that with the perfection the human eye can. At least not yet. If you include two thirds bright sky in your photo the camera's meter will adjust for that & give you detail & correct exposure in your sky. If two thirds (rough estimates) of your photo includes darker ground subjects, camera will adjust for that & give you the correct exposure for your ground subject, but.....your sky is likely to be washed out. On days with the exact right mix of of lighting, you can get the proper exposure in both scenarios. These perfect lighting days are rare & unless you are in a studio with perfect lighting, you are probably going to have to do some work on your photo to return it as close as possible to what you actually saw.

DSC_6992_thumb[3]

SOME MAY REMEMBER THIS PHOTO I TOOK A MONTH AGO ON ONE OF MY COUNTRY DRIVES

DSC_6992_thumb[9]

AGAIN, USING PICASA’S TOOLS I TURNED IT INTO THIS OLD PHOTO… ‘STRAIGHTENED’ &’ CROPPED’ THE ORIGINAL TO IT’S PRESENT STATE THEN INSTEAD OF USING ‘SEPIA’ I CHOSE ANOTHER PICASA TOOL CALLED ‘CROSS PROCESS’ TO GIVE THE PHOTO AN EVEN OLDER LOOK THAN SEPIA WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT… DIDN’T ADD ANY CONTRAST TO THIS PHOTO BECAUSE I WANTED IT TO HAVE A SOFTER FADED LOOK…ALSO ADDED A WHITE PICASA BORDER.

We all oogle over those great National Geographic type perfect photos & for sure those photographers are just about the best there are. But, they also have the best equipment money can buy & they also have the best photo editing programs money can buy as well. Many, if not all of those great magazine shots do not come straight out of a camera & onto a magazine cover or professional website without first going through a photo editing program to correct for the cameras shortcomings. In my opinion & for me personally, the trick is to edit a photo with the idea in mind of making it look as close to natural as possible.   Just the way my eye saw it & not overdo the editing process & end up with artificial looking colors. Be very, very, careful with those so called...'enhancements'. Now, having said that, may I be quick to add......this is not a hard & fast rule when it comes to creativity. And, photography is all about creativity.

WITHOUT & WITH FILL IN CAMERA FLASH…BUT NOTICE THE FLASH REFLECTION IN THE GLASS TOP LEFT OF CENTER

DSC_0003 DSC_0003

USING PICASA’S ‘RETOUCH TOOL’ I TOOK THE REFLECTION OUT OF THE GLASS

Many of we RV’ers have a habit of taking photos through our windshields as we motor our way through the scenic countryside.  That’s fine unless you have a bug splattered windshield.  Nice scenic mountains ahead…..with bug splatters.  Easy fix here when you get onto using your ‘Retouch’ tool.  Just a couple clicks on each bug splatter & it’s gone.  If anyone needs an explanation as to how to use some of these Picasa tools just let me know & I’ll do my best to help ya out…………….:))

GROANER'S CORNER:(( A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience.. Seeing God she asked "Is my time up?" God said, "No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live." Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair color and brighten her teeth! Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance. Arriving in front of God, she demanded, "I thought you said I had another 43 years? Why didn't you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?" God replied: " I didn't recognize you."
