JUST ANOTHER MIGHTY FINE DAY OF AIMLESS WANDERING & RAMBLING THOUGHTS

DSC_0017

If I thought Saturday was a great day I hadn't met Sunday yet.  With sunrise making it’s way through our sleeping Park's pine trees Pheebe & I were up, out the door, & on the road early.  Did not want to miss a moment of this fine Autumn weather.  At this time of year with seasons changing these are indeed precious days before the weather turns & plunges into the dregs of November in another few weeks.  I have always found November to be the most depressing month of the year in these parts so it was important now to be out & about soaking up as much of these Autumn wonders as possible.

WE’VE TRAVELLED MANY HAPPY MILES THESE PAST COUPLE DAYS ON ROADS JUST LIKE THIS

Again we had no hard & fast destinations but thought we'd wander South-east of Bayfield towards Exeter for a change.  Just a delightfully peaceful Sunday morning slowly rolling through Huron Counties countryside.  Deep blue sky with nary a cloud & a slight breeze playing through fields of corn.  I stopped at one point, shut the engine off & just sat quietly listening to the leaves rustling through the corn stalks.  Fields are already a golden brown & the corn harvest has begun.  Some fields are bare with farmers already having brought the crop in.  Saw a lot of farm machinery today sitting in fields resting up for the busy week head.

We slipped through McDonalds in Exeter picking ourselves up a Burrito then headed further east.  I hadn't intended on taking any more barn photos but I found myself on some roads I hadn't traveled for a few years & of course there were many new barns to see.  Well I couldn't just pass them by without a look & by the time we arrived home later this afternoon I had another 35 barns under my belt.  I'm just going to have to start another barn album & that's all there is to it.  Truth is I really love looking at barns now.  So many shapes & sizes & colors.  Old barns, new barns, tumble down barns & what makes them especially appealing right now is the time of year with many of them surrounded by Fall foliage.

Having not been on some of the roads for a number of years I did manage to get myself a little befuddled for a short while.  I had driven into Perth County & they don't name their country roads, they put numbers on them.  I have a much better time remembering road names as opposed to numbers.  Knew generally where I was but not exactly.  How nice to finally wander into the little burg of Woodham.  Probably been close to 15 years since I last drove through that area.  Headed east on the Woodham road taking a lot of barn photos along the way.  I remembered two winters ago when a nice farm couple dropped in to see us at our Arizona house in Congress.  As I recall they lived either on the Woodham or Kirkton road but I couldn't remember where.

From Woodham I knew where the town of St. Marys was so we headed in that direction but didn't go right into the town instead veering north of St. Marys following a country road alongside a river.  Beautiful scenic drive bringing back many old memories.  I was in very familiar territory now & in fact the next 15 miles or so was a pleasant trip down memory lane for me.  I always find Autumn a time of reflection, a time of remembering, a time of pleasant thoughts.  Kelly & I spent 7 great years in the area living in an old rented farm house we often refer to as the Weenie Roast Ranch.   Located maybe 7 or 8 miles north of St. Marys near the tiny community of Fullerton both Kelly & I traveled these gravel roads many times.  St. Marys was our 'go to' town for groceries, shopping, car repairs, etc.  We both drove school bus for Murphy Bus lines in St. Marys & I also drove the St. Mary's mobility bus part time for a few years as well.  If I ever had to pick a small town to live in it would be the town of St. Marys.  It's a town of hills with two rivers converging in the downtown & with it's large old stone buildings you would think you were somewhere in England.

Our drive took us past the Science Hill golf course & I thought of my Aunt Jean & I seemed to recall us playing golf there one time many years ago.  Another 3 or 4 miles & I was driving past the old Weenie Roast Ranch itself.  Oh so many memories flooded my mind but alas the house & property is far from the way I remember how nice we had it fixed up.  But no matter, all those memories are still very much alive in my mind & I held them close as I drove on by.

An hour later with another half dozen or so barns under my belt Pheebs & I were once again back home.  What a wonderful 5 hours we had ourselves for the second day in a row.  My favorite time of year spent with my best Pal just doing the kind of things my best Pal & I love to do.

Busied myself right away editing the 223 photos I had taken.  How can one not take so many photos when one is continuously surrounded by the beautiful wonders of Mother Nature.  223 photos is but a mere fraction of what my eyes saw today.  For every photo I take I miss a thousand & for every thousand missed I take another photo.

Kelly rolled in from Guelph & Cambridge a couple hours after Pheebs & I did.  She had a great time visiting so many family members some of which she had not seen for many years.  Her two days had gone well, she was exhausted & happy to be home but also so very glad she had made the extra effort to get around & see everyone.  She even stopped into a Cambridge arena to see one of her Grandson's playing hockey.  I went out to ask her something a few minutes ago & she was asleep in her chair with her laptop on her lap.  Needless to say I tip toed back into our sunroom:))

According to the weather folks Monday is to be a repeat of Saturday & Sunday.  Don't think Pheebs & I will be doing a road trip but for sure we'll be outside doing something to soak up all the goodness of another mighty fine Autumn day here in South-western Ontario Canada.

AND HERE WE ARE ARRIVING HOME THIS AFTERNOON AFTER ANOTHER MIGHTY FINE DAY OF AIMLESS WANDERING:))

GROANER'S CORNER:(( A student became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, Air Traffic Control asked, "What was your last known position?"  Student: "When I was number one for takeoff".

----------

On the first day of a skiing  vacation a girl fell and broke her leg. As the doctor examined her, she moaned, "Why couldn't this have happened on my last day of skiing?"  The doctor replied, "This IS your last day of skiing."

----------

Sczyelski, my last name, is a mouthful, so I was thrilled when my three-year-old niece learned to spell it.  That is until my cousin said, "You can spell it any way you like but who'll ever know if it's wrong?"

KELLY HEADS FOR GUELPH ONTARIO WHILE PHEEBS & AL HEAD FOR DESTINATIONS UNKNOWN

DSC_0029

Kelly rolled out our driveway headed for Guelph Ontario at 9:55 this morning with Pheebs & I rolling out one minute later for destinations unknown.  First heading East we changed our minds then headed North for Goderich.  Popped into Walmart for a few things.  Noticed Tim Hortons is now closed in there.

KELLY HEADS OFF TO CAMBRIDGE & GUELPH THIS MORNING

It was easier turning right out of the Walmart parking than left so we headed towards downtown Goderich veering off before we got there & headed North out of town following highway 21 along the lake to a little place called Kingsbridge whereupon we swung off #21 & headed in a North-east direction ambling in-land on any old country road that caught our fancy.  How nice to be under sunny blue skies again with no particular place to go or be.  Seemed like we had the whole countryside to ourselves once again.

It’s always a fun thing for me if I can get myself temporarily mis-placed sometimes & we managed to do that this morning somewhere between the small burgs of Ripley & Lucknow.  Even managed to actually travel some roads I had never been on before.  Love when that happens.

Forests aren’t quite ablaze with color yet but they are indeed finally headed in that direction.  The old painter’s brush has definitely touched more country foliage than the last time Pheebs & I were out which I think was just a few days ago.  By the way it’s our Canadian Thanksgiving week-end right now.

For today’s photos I switched back to my 2 camera method.  My Nikkor 70-300 still rattles & shakes before auto-focusing but I just think the pictures are sharper at telephoto ranges than my new Sigma 18-250 Sigma lens.  I like the Sigma lens for it’s overall convenience of not having to carry 2 cameras with 2 lenses.  The Sigma has a nice weight & feel to it but it has something I read about & don’t like.  It’s called ‘lens creep’ & that simply means when the camera is pointed down the the lens creeps out to full telescopic.  There is a lock button on the lens to prevent it from doing that but no matter, I just do not like the lens barrel extending itself out full length whenever the camera is pointed down.  It’s too easy to forget to switch the ‘lock’ button on or off & for someone like me who is quick on the trigger trying to catch a flying bird or darting animal that locking or un-locking a lens is a PITA!!  Like most anything there are always pros & cons & as in many cases you get what you pay for & in this case I simply could not afford the much higher priced comparable Nikkor lens.  Bottom line……….Despite a few cons still do like the versatile Sigma lens:))

With it being such a nice day & me feeling good because of the nice day I came home with 185 photos today.  104 in my Nikon D90 & another 82 in my Nikon D3100.  The landscape was looking so beautiful I just couldn’t keep my finger off the trigger & after editing each & every one of my 185 photos late this afternoon I ended up with an acceptable 137 pictures.  Majority of my photos were rural barns which I have already upload to my OLD BARNS albums.  I wanted to push that album count to over a thousand & I succeeded in doing that today.  I may at some point in the future break that large barn album down into a series of small ones.   I sure do love my photography hobby:))

Pheebs & I eventually wound our way around through today’s Autumn scenery to the town of Wingham coming in from the north end.  Pheebs new right where Subway was located so we headed straightaway downtown & dropped in for a 6” Ham sub with all the fixins.  We scarfed it down in the parking lot knowing we would have sub sauce, tomatoes, swiss cheese lettuce & green peppers all over the place if we didn’t.  Well we sorta did anyway but did manage to keep it off the steering wheel this time.  From Wingham we pointed Libby’s nose in the direction of home & about an hour later we rolled into our driveway after another mighty fine 5 hour jaunt around this big beautiful rural countryside of ours.  Definitely my idea of a great way for a man & his dog to spend some quality time together:))

DSC_0073

Oh, & what great culinary delights did I come up with for supper tonight you ask.  Well I started off with a very scrumptiously thick peanut butter & honey sandwich.  Chased that down with a big bowl of Mini-Wheats cereal mixed with a generous helping of Harvest Crunch & sprinkled with Honey Nut Cheerios.  And how about dessert??  Well that concoction of cereals actually was not only my main course but it was my dessert as well:))

Decided to put together a Live Writer album of a few photos I took Friday night at Bayfield’s Pioneer Park because I had too many to fit into the blog.  Watch for the guys jumping off the pier into Lake Huron with their surf boards.

To use the 'Slide Show' option open the album then double click the first photo.  Screen appears with photo enlarged against a black background.  Move your mouse around a bit & look to the top left corner to where it says ‘Play slide show’.  Click on that & away you go:))

GROANER’S CORNER:(( A Swiss man, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting.  "Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asks. The two Americans just stare at him.  "Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tries. The two continue to stare.  "Parlare Italiano?" No response.  "Hablan ustedes Espanol?" Still nothing.  The Swiss guy drives off, extremely disgusted. The first American turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."  "Why?" says the other. "That guy knew four languages, and it didn't do him any good."
