MOTHER NATURE COMES ASHORE IN ALL HER TUMULTUOUS SWAGGERING MAJESTY

DESPITE HEAVY STORM CLOUDS ROLLING IN THESE FOLKS ON THE WATER SEEMED TO BE IGNORING IT

Minutes after posting Wednesday night’s post Kelly came into the sunroom saying she had just checked our Exeter live radar weather site and saw an ominous looking storm heading across Lake Huron right for us.  Grabbed my cameras and along with the Pheebs headed out the door jumped into the Jeep & raced over to Bayfield’s Pioneer Park on the bluffs overlooking the lake.

Right away the ominous cloud formations out over the lake told of a potentially bad storm.  There is a name for the dirty gray clouds like the ones I saw stretching horizontally from north to south along the horizon line.  No point in me trying to describe the absolute beauty in those dark threatening clouds so I’ll let my photos try to convey that although it is rare for photos to always grasp the true scope of what one is really seeing with their own eyes.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT IT WAS WATCHING THIS STORM COME IN

I WAS SURPRISED TO SEE THESE YOUNG FOLKS PAYING NO HEED TO THE COMING STORM

Odd thing about this incoming storm was no wind, no lightning that I could see and no thunder.  Water was calm as I watched boaters and swimmers in the water seemingly oblivious of the large rolling clouds approaching the shore line.  The forward edge of the large menacing cloud kept getting bigger and bigger as it approached until it was nearly overhead.  Then the winds hit blowing my hat off and setting me back on my heels for a second.  Boats were in overdrive heading for Bayfield’s safe harbor as the last few swimmers quickly scrambled ashore.

ONLY ONE NOT INTERESTED IN THE STORM CLOUDS WAS PHEEBS

The gusting winds kept up unabated for about 20 minutes but still no rain, not even a drop.  I stood by the Park’s cedar rail fence and watched as the storm rolled right over top of us heading inland.  Looking back out over the lake skies were weren’t quite as dark but I thought for sure a wall of rain would surely hit us any second.  It never did.  The ferocious looking storm had turned out to be nothing more than ‘Puff the Magic Dragon frolicking in from the big lake and galloping off in a big turmoil of blustery clouds to the East.  What a great experience it was standing there for nearly half an hour watching Mother Nature coming ashore in all her tumultuous swaggering majesty.

BY THIS POINT STORM WINDS WERE REALLY WHIPPING THE TREE BRANCHES AROUND

It was just a snap cooler early this morning and so much so that I was able to get outside shortly after 7 and accomplish a few more things on our front yard project.  Still really no idea what I’m doing yet but I just keep doing it anyway.  So far it’s been mostly a clean-up digging out old stumps and tree roots in one of the areas I am re-doing.  I have a small electric roto-tiller and that has been a big help softening up the ground for future planting.  I’m also in the process of gathering up some wildflowers and this morning dug me up some Black Eyed Susans near our Parks recycle area.

By 9 a.m. it was getting hot so had to pull the gardening project plug and head inside for a shower.  By 9:30 Pheebs and I were in the Jeep heading off for a wee drive up to Goderich.  Dropped around a garden nursery to check out the prices on some small white cedar trees.  Waaaay too expensive so decided I’d be better off digging up my own cedar trees out in the bush like I always did before.

BY THIS POINT THE BIG STORM CLOUD HAD JUST ROLLED OVER US

With coffee and muffin in hand we took a drive down around the harbor stopping for a leg stretch by the water’s edge near the dog walking area.  Saw a big freighter pulling out and later noticed it had turned south down the lake heading in the direction of Sarnia/Port Huron, Windsor/Detroit.  No idea what it had picked up in Goderich but it would have been either rock salt from the Sifto Salt Mine or perhaps recently harvested wheat at the big grain elevators.  Maybe that freighter was bound for the open ocean after traversing across lakes Erie and Ontario then heading through the Welland Canal and up the St. Lawrence river into the North Atlantic.  From there it’s destiny could be anywhere in the world.  I was able to enlarge my photo later to see the freighter’s name, Michipicoten.  Also here is a You Tube link of the Michipicoten’s Close Call in Duluth Minnesota when she nearly rammed a canal wall one time.DSC_0012-001

It was shortly after 11 when Pheebs and I made it home and again and headed right inside to the welcoming arms of our nice cool house.  Kelly was off somewhere running errands, shopping and keeping an eye out for bargoooons of whatever.  She often finds the neatest stuff then turns around and $$re-sells$$ it.  She’s quite the little wheeler-dealer.  Takes after her Dad:))  Me?? I took off after a Turtle once but it was too fast for me………….:((

GROANER’S CORNER:(( I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me, and we all could use more calm in our lives. By following the simple advice I heard on a Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace.
Dr. Phil proclaimed the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started. So, I looked around my house to see things I started, and hadn't finished; and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreo's, a pot of coffee, the rest of the Cheesecake, some Saltines, and a box of Godiva Chocolates.
You have no idea how freaking good I feel.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH A LIKE MINDED FELLOW ON A DEAD END ROAD

DSC_0016

CANADA GEESE GLEANING A RECENTLY HARVESTED WHEAT FIELD….GLEANING MEANS to gather (grain or the like) after the reapers or regular gatherers.

By 8 a.m. it was already too warm for me to be scratching around in the dirt of our front yard flower bed.  Now that the last of our big pine trees are down I'm anxious to get our yard re-vamped and put back together but until this miserable heat wave is over I'm probably not going to get it done as quickly as I had hoped.

DSC_0024DSC_0023

Pheebs and I picked up our usual route out of Clinton with a short leg stretch at the Hullett Marsh.  It was already too hot for a walk plus biting Deer Flies were out in full force looking for hapless victims.  We kept ourselves in the Jeep and kept moving.  Our travels took us past a tree I had blogged about back on June 17th of this year.  On that roadside tree was the most amazing fungus growing at that time and I took several photos of.  I also blogged the location of that tree if any area folks might want to drive out and have a look at it.  (Fabulous Fungus) Coming along the road this morning I saw the tree ahead but did not see the fungus jutting out from it’s east side.  Oh-Oh I thought.  Stopped and walked down through the ditch to have a look and there lying on the ground was the tattered decaying remains of that beautiful fungus.  Had the fungus just become too heavy and finally pulled off the tree or………and I sure was hoping it wasn’t my next thought.  Had someone read the location of the fungus in my post then come out here and smashed it off the tree.  I want to think not but I am a realist and that thought is a real possibility.  Needless to say I felt bad about it if indeed that is what happened.

Heading southward east of Londesborough Ontario I noticed a narrow country road that did not look familiar to me despite driving all these area roads for years so we headed on down to have us a look see where it went.  We had gone about a quarter mile when I saw a pick-up truck parked up ahead at what appeared to be a dead end.  It was.  Noticed a fella standing by the truck and figured it was probably the land owner.  Noticed he had a dog with him so pulled up behind in preparation of turning around.  Turns out it wasn’t the land owner but a resident of Londesborough.  Of course Pheebs noticed the dog as well and that set off a bunch of excited barking.  Pheebs made it clear we weren't going anywhere until she had at least got out to say Hello so with that I turned the Jeep off and opened the door.  And that's how we met Murray and his dog this morning.  What followed was nearly an hours conversation & the doggy guys playing together after they got to know each other a  bit.

CANADA GEESE ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR FLYING V FORMATIONS SO NOTICE HOW THEY HAVE STILL LOOSELY KEPT THAT FLYING V FORMATION TOGETHER HERE ON THE GROUND

It quickly became apparent Murray and I had a lot in common as we chatted about the Hullett Marsh where he is a trail maintenance volunteer.  Talked about our love for animals and especially our dogs.  Talked about the outdoors, area trails, starry night skies, some RV travels and Arizona.  Like myself Murray is a big Corner Gas fan and that right there just up and cemented a good friendship.  A few stories from days gone by had us connecting on many similarities and especially our ages with Murray being 75 and myself 71.  We talked about memory problems and sure enough by the time I arrived home today I had forgotten Murray's dog's name.  It's not often I feel comfortable meeting strangers anymore but this morning's chance encounter with a like minded fella left me with a good overall feeling.  And Murray if you happen to be reading this is my post for the morning we visited Corner Gas and Dog River:))DSC_0012

Pheebs and I were home before noon and that was pretty much it for the day.  Just too hot for me to be outside.  Going to be another sweltering one tomorrow so doggy and I will probably have to get out early again before cooler night air gives way to more heat and humidity.

LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE ‘GOOSE SMOOTCHING’ GOING ON THERE

GROANER'S CORNER:((  Hugh came into the office an hour late for the third time in one week and found the boss waiting for him.
"What's the story this time. Hugh?" he asked sarcastically. "Let's hear a good excuse for a change." Hugh sighed and said, "Everything went wrong this morning. The wife decided to drive me to the harbor. She got ready in ten minutes, but then the ferry didn't turn up. Rather than let you down, I swam across the river, ran and climbed all the way up and over the mountain range, borrowed a bicycle and cycled the last 20 miles through torrential rains just to get here to this office." "You'll have to do better than that. Hugh," replied the boss, disappointed. "No woman can be ready in ten minutes."

A Few Church Slogans

The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new tithing campaign slogan last Sunday: "I Upped My Pledge So Up Yours.”

Don't let worry kill you, let the church help.

For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

This being Easter Sunday, we will ask Mrs. Lewis to come forward and lay an egg on the altar.
