TODAY WE MET ED FREY & ON CHRISTMAS EVE SOMETHING CREEPY OUR WAY DID COME……

DSC_0020-1

HEADING OUT THE LANEWAY ON OUR EARLY MORNING WALK

It was last summer one day when an email crossed my desk from a fellow by the name of Ed Frey.  Ed had stumbled across our blog somewhere & took an interest in our travels here in Arizona’s Sulphur Springs Valley.  Ed spent his earlier years in Cochise County where we are now staying.  Over the course of the last bunch of months, Ed & I have emailed back & forth & he has sent us links & info regarding history, people, places & things to see in the area.  Ed has been over in New Mexico around Silver City for the past couple months but today he rolled into Elfrida, hung a left towards the Swisshelm mountains & rolled into our laneway about 1:30.  What a pleasure it was to finally meet Ed.  Here is a totally interesting fellow who packed in the commercial banking world years ago, joined the Peace Corp & traveled far & wide around the world.  Ed was also a marathon bicycle rider having cycled across America & I saw a plaque in his Class C commemorating a 4,000+ mile ride.  Be sure to check out ED'S PROFILE for a guy with an interesting past.  It was great to talk with him this afternoon.  Ed is a solo RV’er & after spending tonight at a cousin’s place over near McNeil he’s moving on to Sierra Vista for a while to get some work done on his Class C.  He is truly a wandering western Nomad with no hard wired plans or destinations.  All the best to you Ed & thanks for dropping by today:))

IT WAS A PLEASURE TO MEET ED FREY TODAY

WANDERING WILLY must be having a walloping great time over there in that Texas place  because we haven’t heard from him since December 8th.  If anybody’s driving through Texas, keep an eye out for WW.  Texas isn’t that big a place is it:))

SEE YA ED:))

A few days ago I heard planes overhead again & was able to capture the following series of photos showing a mid-air fueling operation.  Two large fuel tankers were gassing up five A-10 Thunderbolts. (Warthogs)  This is a common sight over the Sulphur Springs Valley.

Had a rather creepy thing happen Christmas Eve & no, it did not have anything to do with Santa landing on our roof, but it did have everything to do with something landing on our roof!!   It was about 9:30 & Kelly had already gone to bed.  I was in my chair tapping away on my laptop when I heard a rustling sound at our door.  Thought it was just one of the dogs moving around over by the computer desk.  But no, a quick check told me the guys were all sound asleep & nowhere near the door.  The rustling only lasted about 5 seconds & stopped.  We have spotted a cat on the property from time to time so chalked it up to that.  But then came the creepy part.

PHOTOS TAKEN AT 300mm

It was about 10 minutes later when suddenly, something slowly & deliberately walked along our Motor Home’s roof from front to back.  And, whatever it was, it walked upright on two legs!!  I followed the footstep sounds with my eyes as it walked past overhead right in the center of the roof.  My heart was just a racing because this was very scary.  I think it was fear that kept me riveted in my chair as I sat there with my mind racing to make some kind of logical sense out of what I was hearing.  The sounds were not  a heavy boot or shoe like human sound.  It sounded lighter & sharper. And, it was not a fast scrambling animal walk.  The steps were slow, methodical & every bit the gait of a small childlike human.  My mind could not think of an upright animal walking on two legs, & it was definitely two legs & not 4.  And, it never alerted any of the dogs……just me!!  Like the dogs, had I been asleep, I might not have heard the light footsteps either.

DSC_0015-1

I absolutely had no intentions whatever of going outside but wouldn’t you know it, Max woke up minutes later & decided he wanted to go outside for pee break.  Now I had a problem because there is no way I wanted to go outside.  However, Max was half way down the inside steps & had to go.  With great reluctance & a healthy dose of ‘scared’ inside I slipped on my shoes, grabbed our baseball bat & a flashlight & reluctantly ventured out the door.  It is times like this when all those horror movies I have ever watched over the years came flooding into my mind.  I have quite an imagination which in good times is an enjoyably creative thing but Christmas Eve it was conjuring up all kinds of grotesque monsters & I had to really wrestle with myself to clear those images out of my mind.

DSC_0019-1

HEADING INTO THE CLOUDS JUST AS THE FULLY FUELED WARTHOG DISCONNECTS & BREAKS AWAY

Max was ahead of me & I watched him for any signs of something wrong as we exited the coach.  I had the flashlight in overdrive as I shone it quickly around the yard from one dark corner to the other & then quickly back & up along the rigs roofline fully expecting some kind of hideous looking Alien on our roof.  But, nothing.  Max was walking around totally oblivious of my fears or any real or imagined intruders.  He did his business & I was relieved to get us both back in the coach with a locked door behind us…..but, it wasn’t over yet.

DSC_0001

About 20 minutes later there was a definite bump & scrambling again at our door.  Only lasted a few seconds & all was quiet again.  Strange thing is that none of the dogs were alerted to this again.  Usually with anything like that going on they would be up & furiously barking at the door.  But, nothing!!  And no, I was not dozing in my chair & imaging anything.  I sat up for another half hour & the only conclusion I could come up with that made any remote sense to me was the unlikely possibility of an owl landing on the front part of the roof & then walking the length of the coach to the back.  We do have owls in the area & quite often during the day we do have smaller birds skitter scattering around on our roof.  I don’t think it is the time of year for nest building but could an owl have sensed a bird or bird’s maybe spending the night under a solar panel or something.  Not likely, but it was the only piece of remote logic I could put together long enough at the time to allow me to get to sleep later.  And, like I said at the beginning……this did not have anything to do with Santa Claus & his reindeer landing on our roof!!  I did climb up the rigs rear ladder in the morning & everything looked perfectly normal on the roof.  Didn’t want to go any further & run the risk of seeing some kind of large webbed human footprints in the dust on the roof or anything.  Remember the movie years ago, ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon.’  Enough was enough & it was time to put a lid on my imagination & get on with the reality of the day.  So, bottom line simply is………I will probably never know what 2 legged creature walked the length of our Motor Home roof on Christmas Eve of 2010.  And, if I told you this incident didn’t scare the absolute ba-jeebers out of me I would be lying right through my false teeth & my Pinocchio nose would surely grow & grow & grow……10-4!!

Kelly came across an interesting blog tracking site a couple days ago called, ICE ROCKET.  For bloggers interested in knowing more about the effects or influence their blogs may be having in Blog Land & many other areas of the internet, this is a very informative site.

DOWNTOWN ELFRIDA

Noticed on our FEEDJIT statistics site that someone had typed into a search engine, ‘700mm telescope’ & were directed to our site.  Just in case that referral is in regards to my post a few days ago I should clear something up.  Technically speaking, my telescope is a Stellarvue Nighthawk 80mm F6 Refractor.  I traded in my ‘to big for me’ Dobsonian 8” Starhopper scope at O'NEIL PHOTO & OPTICAL in London, Ontario on the Nighthawk scope.  Joe O’Neil told me that by adapting my Nikon D50 to the lens, it in effect made the 80mm telescope equate photographically to 700mm.  So, that is why I refer to it as a 700mm telescope lens.  If I throw my 2X Teleconverter into that mix I can double that up up to 1400mm but that is really pushing the quality factor.  Scope is also equipped with an F2 Reflex Finder which casts a small red dot into the F2 sighting device enabling me to accurately find far off objects in the night sky.  I’m wondering if it was something from one of those far off Star Clusters I was spying on that landed on our roof Christmas Eve!!

I should have enlarged Saturday’s Big Horn Sheep photo more so I have now done that below.  Various guesses have been coming in ranging from 3 to 10 sheep spotted on the rock face.  My guess is 6 for sure & maybe 7.  Two are slightly left & down a tad from center.  What looks like a third sheep at the end of a single file may or may not be a sheep.  Very hard to tell but I do think I see a leg there.  The other 4 are located straight across to the extreme right & down a bit.  Three are close together in single file & the darker one second in line may even be a Ram.  The fourth one is in line behind the other three but maybe back 6 feet or so.  I took the photo at the bottom end of the Palm Canyon trail.  If anyone can see any more Sheep, let me know:))

CHRISTMAS DAY WITH SOME SNOWY MEMORIES

DSC_0009

Had ourselves a mighty fine quiet Christmas day.  It seems to me if folks were brought up with snow at Christmas time it just isn’t quite the same Christmas without snow.  Have always found it difficult to get into the Christmas spirit here in the southwest each year.  Maybe if it snowed a couple days before the big day it might help.  As much as I dislike the winter months back home in Canada I do miss the beautiful winter scenes with snow on heavy laden pine bows, clear blue sky’s with forests of evergreens stretching across a snowy white landscape.  Snow drifts curling into ice cream like gigantic snow cones.  I sometimes miss the crunch of snow underfoot, the clear crisp early morning air that makes your breath stand on end & the Blue Jay’s calling from nearby forests & trees.  Striking red Cardinals stand out against the white snow as they flit back & forth from their protective Cedar trees to front yard bird feeders.  Yes, there a few things I miss about winter in Canada alright……but just a few:))

A CANADIAN WINTER IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS

The folks over at TRAVEL WITH JEAN & SKIP are in one of our favorite boon docking areas right now just west of Ajo, Arizona.  The Darby Wells loop road runs from Ajo out around some of the greatest Sonoran Desert scenery around before looping back again into Ajo.  We just loved the scenic boon docking spot we had here back in late February of 08.  AJO HIGHLANDS 1     AJO HIGHLANDS 2  AJO HIGHLANDS 3  AJO HIGHLANDS 4.  For anyone not familiar with the SONORAN DESERT I like to think of it as the green desert & home of the mighty Saguaro Cactus.  One of our favorite southern Arizona areas for sure.

For anyone traveling in southern Arizona west of Tucson or looking for a quiet affordable winter RV Park away from the mainstream I would recommend you head for HICKIWAN TRAILS RV PARK in Why, Arizona.  Kelly & I have lots of great memories from this area & have stayed here several times plus surrounding boon docking areas.  Last time there we put together the Hickiwan Trails blog site for them.  The CAVE DWELLERS spent a fair bit of time there last winter enjoying themselves as well.  It is only a 20 minute drive down to the ORGAN PIPE CACTUS NATIONAL MONUMENT where you can take a great scenic 25 mile loop drive through the Ajo Mountain Range.

WATER BREAK ON ONE OF OUR MANY, MANY, MORNING WALKS AT HICKIWAN TRAILS A FEW YEARS AGO

I just found a photo below I had been looking for quite awhile ago.  This was taken in Borrego Spring’s (California) Palm Canyon our first year there.  We were returning down the trail from the Palms when we heard the scuffle of small rocks falling.  We didn’t see anything but I randomly took a picture of the steep rock face anyway.  It wasn’t until later that night when I enlarged the photo that I was surprised to see what had caused a few rocks to dislodge.  Look very closely & then start counting.  Tip….Big Horn Sheep, but how many:))

DSC_0009-1

I must say again how much our Cradlepoint router has changed & greatly improved our computer routines here in the Motor Home.  Mornings are a good example of how well our new system is working & I’m sure there are many other couples out there who can identify.  Took a little shuffling at first but we have both settled into our favorite computer spots with me in my comfy Ikea Poang chair & Kelly over by the door at our new but smaller computer desk.  We each have our own internet surfing habits, favorite programs & sites to look at, but sometimes we land on the same site or email program at the same time.  We kinda randomly banter back & forth about things we are reading & it’s sorta neat how we discuss this or that blog, maybe read email excerpts back & forth, or comment on some morning news item etc.  Sometimes we’ll send links back & forth as well.  Although we are only a few feet apart, the info sent probably travels untold thousands of miles between the two laptops in the blink of an eye….or less.   Most amazing when I think back to when I was a small boy & we didn’t even know what a television set was.  The photo below gives you an idea of our daily computer station configuration.

DSC_0012

We took the dinette out of our rig 3 years ago & never did replace it with anything to eat on.  First question from folks is, ‘where do you eat?’  Our answer to that question is, ‘anywhere we can.’  We know it isn’t the best set up but we had to reconfigure the rig’s interior to make things workable for two humans & 3 dogs or as Kelly would tell you, 1 human & 4 dogs.  I generally eat my meals right in my chair with my computer on my lap…..and sometimes I end up in quite a slurpy mess.  In the photo below I actually did end up dumping a small load of soup on my T-shirt.  I do my own laundry by the way!! .  Boot Camp taught me that back in 65:))

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL FROM THE BAYFIELD BUNCH:))

PICASA

Well, here it is Christmas Eve again.  Unlike most other folks, our Christmas will be very quiet, but that is by choice.  Both Kelly & I have many fond memories of many Christmas’s past.  Lots of celebrations, family, food, etc. etc. but we mutually now chose to keep the holiday season very low key.   We were just talking about all that yesterday & remarked how our priorities have changed over the years.

We do wish everyone a very Merry Christmas & all the best for the New Year.   Thank you to all our readers, fellow bloggers, friends & family for sticking with us through thick & thin blogging times this past year.  Very much appreciated by both of us & the furry guys too:))

I will keep this post short so all of you can spend more time with family & friends & of course, more time bellied up to the table with all that yummy food:))

Merry Christmas from the Bayfield Bunch:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  As a little girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual, "And what would you like for Christmas?”  The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped: "Didn't you get my E-mail?"

And, just in case you were wondering……

The weight of Santa's sleigh loaded with one Beanie Baby for every kid on earth: 333,333 tons.
Number of reindeer required to pull a 333,333-ton sleigh: 214,206 -- plus Rudolph.
To deliver his gifts in one night, Santa would have to make 822.6 visits per second, sleighing at 3,000 times
the speed of sound.
At that speed, Santa and his reindeer would burst into flames instantaneously.

Just in case you were wondering……:))

LOOKING BACK ON SOME RVING CHRISTMAS DAY PICS

DSC_0998

CHRISTMAS….ARIZONA RANCH STYLE

Our moderately gusting Wednesday winds finally blew themselves out sometime early Thursday morning.  Beautiful starry night with a few flecked clouds as I let Max out for a whiz around 2 a.m.  As quite often happens I was unable to get back to sleep so knew I was in for another long dragged out Zombie like day.  On the plus side….no early morning work schedule:))

SOMETIMES MAX BEATS ME BACK TO BED

Looking back at our RVing Christmas Days over the last number of years I was able to come up with a few Christmas Day photo memories.  Christmas Day 2004 we spent hiking in Boquilles Canyon at Big Bend National Park in Texas.  Thought I had those pics but they must be on the home computer.  Christmas Day 2005 was spent at home in Bayfield…..

Christmas Day 2006 we were at Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus New Mexico & had Christmas dinner at the town’s community center….& then Santa came in.

Boy, I did a silly thing yesterday while messing with the computer.  Kelly & I were trying to figure out how all this tags, labels & categories stuff works between Blogger & Live Writer etc.  Ever since switching to the new version of Live Writer I have not been able to include tags for each post.  The menu that allows me to do that always drops down through the task bar & I have not been able to access the bottom of that bar to type in the box where new tags are entered.  Anyway, while trying to figure this all out I somehow inadvertently added a whole column of countless past tag words which ended up in the right column.  For whatever reason, after that our search feature wouldn’t work.  In the process of uninstalling & reinstalling the search box to get it going again I accidentally wiped out our Sitemeter counter above it.  When I turned the computer on this morning our Sitemeter showed we only had 1 visitor to the site in the last 12 hours.  I knew right away something was wrong so it was Kelly to the rescue & she quickly restored the Sitemeter counter.  I figured the meter would start all over again at zero but luckily it picked up the count where it left off when I accidentally deleted it 12 hours before.

DSC_0008-1

The rains started here this morning at 6 a.m. sharp & continued until 7:15 & then restarted again at 9:15 for another half hour:((  We’ve almost got enough water in the dirt now to mix us up a good big batch of sticky old Arizona Desert Mud Soup.

Another tip from the internet on how to increase traffic to your blog…."Write well and write often.  Frequently updating your blog with useful content is the first step to building your blog's audience. The content you write is what will keep readers coming back for more. Make sure you have something meaningful to say to them and say it often to maintain their interest and keep them loyal.  Furthermore, post frequently to increase the number of chances you have for your blog's content to be noticed by search engines such as Google or Technorati.”

DSC_0994

And, I see the HUFFINGTON POST has landed in the number one spot for the 3rd year in a row as top news blog.  It originally started out as…..just another blog.  Am I a daily news reader?  No I am not, but Kelly checks out what’s happening in the world every morning & keeps me up to speed on all the woeful worldly happenings.  I seem to be more interested in what’s for breakfast:))

DSC_0007

I had never heard of a LIBERTY DELUXE CASITA TRAVEL TRAILER until reader’s Glenda & Jeff commented on our blog Wednesday.  I linked back & had a look at their CASITA ESCAPES blogsite.  I got a kick out their ‘Misadventures & Boo-Boos’ section.  I think we all should have a misadventures & boo-boo section on our blogs just to keep us all grounded.  Reading about other people’s foibles always gives me a boost on a down day & a chuckle on an up day.  Nice to know I am not alone in my ineptness!!

STRANGE PICTOGRAPH ROCKS KEEP SHOWING UP AROUND HERE

Some errands took us 3 miles into Elfrida this morning with a stop at the well stocked High Lonesome Trading Company cowboy type store.  Same store I bought my big white cowboy hat last January.

DSC_1002

A dash to the Post Office & visit to the Library enabled Kelly to pick up another stack of books.  I am a one book at a time kinda guy so I browsed around the non fiction local history section until I found, ‘Apache Wars’ an illustrated battle history of the Arizona, New Mexico, Texas & Mexico areas.  Many archival photos & a factual detailed account of the Apache Indian bands in the area including the Chiricahua Apaches.   The life & times of Geronimo are prevalent & it was interesting to see photos of the Indian Chief at Fort Bowie where Kelly & hiked to a couple years ago.  Looks like we might be adding on some more day trips.  After the library it was a quick little Burrito breakfast at Elfrida’s Roundup Café & back out to our dusty old road & home.

DSC_0995

Here’s an interesting fulltime boondocking couple we came across this afternoon wandering about the southwest in their 21’ travel trailer.   The ROADSIDE RAMBLING folks consist of Mom, Dad, Daughter, 5 cats & Rufus the dog.  They are their own people & I admire their determined independence in the ever present face of conformity.
