AN OLD DEPARTED BOYHOOD CHUM PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE TODAY

DSC_0086
BAYFIELD HAS A BUSY HARBOR EVERY SUMMER
Not sure why it is but once a year I have a tendency to wander myself about an hour & a half southwest of Bayfield to my old home town of Tavistock, Ontario.   I really don't do anything once I get there except to drive slowly around the town touching base with familiar places & old memories.  Most of the old Public School is still standing except hard to see now with a care facility built on the front of it.  But, I can see the eighth grade second story windows & that is enough to stir a host of pleasant memories.  The ground floor of the house I spent my first 14 or so years in still stands & again, many fond memories.  A Tim Horton's coffee shop now stands where the old train station was & that in turn was only a few hundred yards from our house.
DSC_0007
THIS STILL STANDING OLD LUMBER STORAGE SHED CLOSE TO OUR HOUSE IS ONE OF THE MANY OLD SHEDS & BUILDINGS I PLAYED IN AS A SMALL BOY…NONE OF THAT BACKGROUND STUFF WAS THERE THEN & OUR HOUSE WAS ABOUT WHERE THOSE 2 TELEPHONE POLLS ARE YOU SEE TO THE RIGHT IN THIS PHOTO
I grew up next to the railroad tracks with steam engines being a part of my every day life for most of those 14 years.  I can still remember the sweet smell of those old engines.   Steam, coal, water grease, & oil all blended in the warm air wafting from the large black boiler.  Hissing sounds from escaping steam, voices of trainmen shouting back & forth, the shunting of train cars & the clank of metal on metal as the engine couples the coaches & train cars.  And sometimes, but just sometimes, if the engineer had a heart, he would spin the big steel wheels on the iron tracks to the delight of the little boy standing there with a big grin on his little face.  The tracks & the trains are long gone now but a few of the old lumber sheds still stand where once the hustle & bustle of flat cars on the siding would be busy unloading lumber.  I remember a cattle pen & loading dock as well but they are all gone now along with a couple tall cement grain elevators.  It was beside one of these sheds one warm Autumn night back in 1957 where my Uncle Fred, my Grandfather, my Stepfather, my Mother & I stood on the railroad tracks watching a far distant blinking object traversing it's way across the starry night sky .  It was Russia's Sputnik & I will never forget that.

THE TRAIN TRACKS RAN JUST TO THE RIGHT OF THIS SHED TOWARDS THE CAMERA & IT WAS JUST PAST THE FAR END OF THAT SHED WHERE WE WATCHED SPUTNIK GO OVER
Every street in my old home town holds many memories for me.  Some still vividly clear while others are gradually, or quickly slipping through the hourglass.  The house where I spent most of my early & mid teens still stands.  Mixed memories there, but with time I'm hoping those memories, like others, will just become a mere pleasant spidery whiff from days long ago.
DSC_0010
THE HOUSE I SPENT MY TURBULENT TEEN YEARS IN & THE HOUSE KELLY & I HAD TO CLEAN OUT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AFTER MY MOTHER WAS PLACED IN A CARE FACILITY BACK IN 04
It is the town's cemeteries that probably stir most of the memories for me.  Names on stones that are familiar as I try to put a face to people I once knew.  I was able to locate a cousin today & a boyhood chum I had last seen sometime back in the mid 60's.  Looked for another friend who I thought might have come home, located his family but not him.  I have to assume that he just hasn't made his last journey home yet.  Guess it's just a way for me to touch base & keep in touch with an era in time that almost seems more like an old black & white movie than the actual colorful reality it once was.  Things you wished you would have said to these departed folks when you had the chance & things you wish you hadn't said.  It's all there in the mind, milling about in a fog.   A trip back to the old home town stirs those faded memories & for a short time it's nice to spend a few moments once again with old friends, family members, & the towns folks who were once the movers & shakers in my life.   A nod to everyone, a smile of recognition, a word of thanks, & then I am gone again down the road, maybe to return yet another day, maybe not………………

OUR BACK YARD HAS GREENED UP NICELY AGAIN THIS YEAR
It was the picture on my old boyhood Chum’s tombstone today that put a smile on my face.  It told me that he had gone on to follow his adventurous curiosity with engines, mechanical things & wheels.  No idea what kind of hobby car George had himself there but in my mind’s eye I could easily see him putting down the road with an offbeat little rig like that.  And I’ll bet he had a blast getting it up & running too.  I have touched on George in a few previous post’s over the years.  It was he & I as boys who became lost on a foggy late Autumn day Spring hike.  Couldn’t figure out our direction until we came to a set of railway tracks.  I said go left but George said go right.  He was sure of his decision so we went right.  Twenty minutes later be began to make out some familiar buildings looming out of the fog near the tracks.  We were back in Tavistock.  Another time I helped him late one night quietly push his Mom & Dad’s Volkswagen Beetle out of the garage & down the road far enough for George to start it up with the key he had snitched.  We went joyriding in the not so nearby town of Plattsville.  Neither one of us had a driver’s license & were still a few years away from being old enough to get one.  It was George who first put an old lawnmower engine on a soapbox derby car he had & actually got it running.  I still remember us working on that project for days & days & days.  It was also George & I as boys who spent many happy Saturday mornings on our living room floor putting plastic model airplanes together.  George’s family was much better off financially than my family so it was always his models he let met me help him with.  To this very day, every time I smell LePage’s glue, I immediately think of my boyhood Pal George & the many zany things we shared together.  And, thanks George, for once again putting  a smile on your old Pal AL’s face today.  Good stuff Buddy & hey, I finally got enough money saved up to buy my own plastic model airplane, but I might need a little help in putting it together OK:))

SOMETIMES, WHEN I REACH THE END OF THE DAY

DSC_0027

Sometimes, when I reach the end of the day I think I have nothing of interest to write about.   But, let me tell you, there is always something to write about if one has the interest, imagination, & desire.   For me, some night’s flow with lite fare & may turn out on the upbeat humorous side while others may be  more informative, down to earth, introspective & thought provoking.  Some may be angry, some may be sad.  And some may be just plain silly.  But each day is different.  And, it is that daily difference that holds my interest, keeps my imagination alive & gives me the desire to sit down each night at the keyboard regardless of how I am feeling.  It gives me a chance to get my thoughts & feelings out & that has been important to me these past few years.  I recently likened blogging to a ball game when I said, “Some days we hit a homer, & some days we just end up getting a few base hits. And, then there are the strike out days. The posts that, despite the effort, just don’t make it into everyone’s understanding. But, each day is new & the game begins anew, despite the homers, the base hits, & the strike outs.

It has been a long game & I am beginning to wonder what inning this is…………...10-4.

DEER PARK’S WEDDING DAY PHOTOS & THINKING OF ARIZONA

DSC_0029
WEATHER TURNED OUT PERFECT FOR A WEDDING ON THE BEACH
We weren't exactly 'Singing In The Rain' this morning but we were sure walking in a steady rain as we made our way around the morning trail.  By the time we got back we had ourselves a very soggy doggy.  The rain started in the night with the live feed weather map showing more rain squalls coming in across the lake for Saturday.  I couldn't help but think of the anxiety all the wedding folks must be feeling about the wedding on the beach over at DEER PARK LODGE today.

FATHER & DAUGHTER SHARE A MOMENT ON THE WAY TO THE ALTER
Luckily, the rain ended & the sun broke through the clouds about noon bathing the beach in mottled sunlight.  There is a bit of logistics problem at Deer Park in that the beach is about 60 feet below where the cottages & parking lots are located.  There are well over a hundred steps leading down a steep hill to the beach.  Problem is getting older folks down & then back up that hill so I volunteered to transport people with our Jeep.  Matt, the owners Son also has a Jeep, so between the two of us we were able to move any folks finding the steps too much of a struggle.  I could carry one person at a time & Mat could fit 3 into his Jeep Liberty.  Between us we were also able to move the DJ’s sound system equipment to the beach & back too.  All went well & the wedding went off without a hitch.  Kelly said so many people logged onto the beach cam that it crashed the feed so I don’t know if anyone got to see any of the wedding or not.  But, guess what…..another wedding next week-end & another wedding the week-end after that.

We had quite a go-a-round awhile back trying to decide what the best scenario would be for maybe changing our style of RVing now that we have the house in Arizona.  Do we really need the big Motorhome to make those long 6 day trips between Bayfield & Congress.  What about downsizing to something smaller & easier on gas.  But, if we want to continue our travels around the southwest using our Congress house as a home base then what better RV than we already have.  Already set up with solar, large holding tanks for boondocking etc.  Runs well & suits us perfect.  We thought about towing a small Airstream trailer down & maybe leaving it in Congress.  But, what to tow it with.  I mistakenly thought a Mini-Van would have been perfect but after checking out tow info I found out a Mini-Van was too small.  A Mini-Van would have been perfect for going back & forth plus Kelly would have used it here at home.  Having had 2 previous Mini-Vans I consider them to be the most practical & logical vehicle on the road.
DSC_0036
DSC_6608 DSC_6588
Had to finally give up the small trailer idea because the only thing to suitably tow them was a pick-up truck & I have no interest in owning another pick-up truck or driving one back & forth to Arizona.  And, we certainly don’t need a truck here in Bayfield.  However, Congress is another story.  We either need a pick-up truck or a utility trailer to haul stuff around at the house.  I’m leaning towards a Jeep towed utility trailer.  Much, much, cheaper to operate & far less maintenance & things to go wrong with.  Wouldn’t worry about the Pack Rats chewing up a utility trailer as bad as a pick-up truck if left there.

Having never even slept one night in our Congress house yet, we figured the most logical thing for us to do, was to do nothing.  Before we go making any major vehicle decisions we had maybe better spend a winter’s season in & around & coming & going from our southwest house first.  Are we sure this house & location are right for us.  Only way to know that is to spend some time there & I imagine by next year at this time we will have a much clearer picture if we have made the right move or not.  It all sounds good in theory but will the practical side hold up when we get there.  Will this ‘home base’ idea be strong enough to hold our interest over the next few years.  Be sure to tune in next year & see where the Bayfield Bunch is, because right now, we have no idea ourselves.

KATHY left a comment today saying, “Thank you so much for sharing your absolutely heavenly place up there in Bayfield for the summer, with all of the flowers and butterflies!
It must be such an extreme to go to the barren southwest, but I bet it's warmer in winter”! :)   It is those extremes that make each location uniquely it’s own.  If both locations were the same or even similar, the attraction for me would not be the same.  Some may see the southwest as barren but I see it for it’s truly rugged beauty & have been trying to convey that through my photos these past 5 years.  The secret for me lies in the word ‘extreme.’  Not just the landscape but the people & way of life as well.  I liken it to rocketing off to a distant Planet.  Very little is the same as the Planet we left.  Yes, it would be much cheaper for us to head straight south in the winter to Georgia or Florida, but there is no comparison to the extreme scenery & lifestyle change we so lovingly experience & look forward to in traveling to America’s wide open spaces of the yet untamed wild & woolly great American West:))

I WAS TOO FAR AWAY TO HEAR WHAT THE LITTLE GIRL IN RED WAS READING
I liked the term 'bricks & wheels' I heard Mark use over at BOX CANYON BLOG a few days ago.  That very aptly sums up many of we Snow Birds out here.  Often referred to as the best of both worlds I sometimes have to agree with that.  Definitely like having the bricks part as a home base for sure, just wish we could tip the balance in favor of a longer wheels part.  Been two & a half months we been home now & despite my natural born hitch-itch I have been confining my itch better than in past years.  I think all the medical appointments in May helped to speed up the time for me.  But, the itch is stirring again & this past week has had me in a restless conundrum wandering about trying to get my mind focused on something usefully constructive.  As I have said before, some folks are content to sit at home most days doing about what amounts to be the square route of routinely nothing.  And, more power to those folks, they should be so lucky as to not be bothered with thoughts of travel & adventure.  But, for people like myself who have little patience for remaining in one location for long dragged out periods at a time, it is a different story.  I'm afraid my restless summer has begun.  Just a few thoughts on a rainy Saturday morning & actually, I think I did very well this year in holding off the itch for this long.

"Here is your oceanside condo, over there are the tennis courts, swimming pool, and two golf courses. If you need any refreshments, just stop by any of the many bars located throughout the area."
"Heck, Gloria," the old man hissed when Saint Peter walked off, "we could have been here ten years ago if you hadn't heard about all that stupid oat bran, wheat germ, and low-fat diets!"

IF ONE DOESN’T LOOK, ONE MAY NEVER FIND

DSC_0020-001
Feeling the need to change-up my surroundings for a bit again I headed off in the Jeep this morning with my cameras.  Spent a couple nice hours crawling around the country side enjoying the scenery & the ambience of our rural surroundings.  I guess it is that constant travel urge in me to just get out there & peer over the next hill & around the next curve in the road.  I have always had that & it has served me well in our travels.

Another enjoyable purpose for my country road wanderings is to keep an eye out for any ‘For Sale’ signs on rural properties.  Not all people list through Real Estate so there is always an ‘off chance’ of stumbling across something interesting.  If one doesn’t look, one may never find.

Still patiently awaiting a call from Dr. Anand’s office in Goderich as to when I am to report to the Hospital & have a couple growths removed.  I would just like to get that one behind me & find out the biopsy results of the suspect one.  In two weeks I’ll be back to the Stratford Hospital to have my stent removed.  Will be glad to get that little procedure behind me as well.  I hope to get a report on my Kidney Stone procedure results from a couple weeks ago at that time too.  Isn’t this aging crap just wonderful!!  Oh how I wish we could have started our adventures at a much younger age.

Slipped over to DEER PARK LODGE this afternoon & headed down to the beach to take some photos.  Kelly had sent an email saying all the chairs were set up for Saturday’s wedding.  Looks like the weather is going to co-operate so the ceremony on the beach is a go.  Wedding will take place at 3 P.M. Ontario time.  There are two ways to access the live web cam on the beach.  On DEER PARK'S WEBSITE just look for the little webcam on the left side under the header photos.  The direct camera link is DEER PARK'S BEACH CAM.  You can go there now & check out all the chairs.  If the screen is black it probably just means it’s night time here in Ontario:))

And, this Berneazian comment from Ed over at THE PEREGRINATING GRAYBEARD regarding Bernese/Burmese dogs I had talked about in my two previous posts.  Ed says,  "Methinks it's "Burmese Mountain Dog", although what the breed has to do with Burma isn't really something I've ever looked into.  There is such a breed but the dog in Al's pictures is a Burnese Mountain Dog as he has said. The Burnese was breed as a Swiss cattle dog. The Burmese was breed as a Burma temple guard dog”.  “There is such a breed but the dog in Al's pictures is a Burnese Mountain Dog as he has said.  Additional doggy info.....  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernese_Mountain_Dog.

"You're not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Larry, hit the ball, drag Larry."

OUR DOGGY SLEEP OVER WENT WELL:))

IMG_3142

PHEEBS & GUINNESS LOVE PLAYING & ROUGH HOUSING TOGETHER

As kids we sometimes played a game called, 'musical chairs'.  Last night at our house it was a game I would call 'musical dogs’ as the guys continually moved from one sleeping spot to another.  I stayed put in my recliner beside our patio door as a doorman for the night in case anyone had to go out.  Sometimes I'd wake up & see Stella on the couch, awhile later maybe Pheebs was on the couch & even little Guinness made it up there for bit as well.  When Kelly got up this morning Stella was on my bed, Pheebs was on the couch & Guinness was on my lap.  Half an hour before that, Pheebs was on my lap & Guinness was on the floor beside my chair & nobody was on the couch.  Who knows where Stella was.  Awwww, what a great night:))

AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL

Kelly headed into work this morning around 10 & took the two doggy Munchkins with her.  They have their own fenced in back yard just off the office at Deer Park Lodge.  When she came home late this afternoon the Munchkins came back with her so we had another big round of play time until Stella & Guinness’s Mom & Dad came to pick them up about 7.   Sure was nice having the Bums here for the time we did.  I believe it is great for a single dog to have a companion & that was always evident when we had Max, Checkers, & Motor.  Watching them all interact together brought us so much joy over the years.  I think if circumstances line up right we just might end up getting ourselves one more little Bayfield Bunch Pal at some point.  Nothing definite yet.

IMG_3150

I DON’T THINK LITTLE GUINNESS IS GOING TO BE SO LITTLE FOR TOO MUCH LONGER
And, I too thought Burnese was incorrectly spelled & should have an 'm' as in Burmese but a quick check on the internet confirms Burmese in this case is spelled with a 'n' making little Guinness a true BURNESE MOUNTAIN DOG.  I have never seen paws so large on a dog only 3 months old.  Pheebs & Guinness get along great & love playing together but Stella was kinda being a Granny Grumps about it all sometimes.  She is very protective of her little Brother, Guinness.

DEER PARK LODGE’S NEW WATERFALL POND IS COMING ALONG NICELY

Deer Park Lodge is hosting a big wedding this week-end.  They have had a couple previous weddings there but this one is a biggy with a first ever large tent for the festivities.  The tent is set up in Deer Park’s main area but the Bride & Groom are hoping to be married on the beach below. (weather permitting)  I slipped over to Deer Park this afternoon & took a few photos of the big tent where the reception will be held.  I may slide over there again on Saturday & grab some candid photos for Deer Park’s files & archives.  Deer Park also has a live beach cam so I’ll post that site & wedding time tomorrow in case anyone wants to have a look in at a beach wedding on Saturday:))DSC_0021-001

THIS TENT COMES COMPLETE WITH IT’S OWN CATERER’S ROOM, LIGHTING, HEATING, TABLES, CHAIRS, BAR ,& WOODEN DANCE FLOOR

Kelly sure had her hands full when I was there.  The Johnny-On-The-Spot guys arrived with truck & trailer the same time as a large stake truck arrived to pick up laundry.  Not a lot of free space for big trucks at Deer Park so there was a bit of shuffling around between vehicles.  Add to that another stake truck in dropping off ice plus a major water leak being repaired at one of the cottages with a tractor.  Saturday’s bride, sister & Mother were also there busily setting up in the tent while Stella & Guinness were racing around in the office chewing up brochures.  Amidst all this Kelly is fielding phone call after phone call & when the portable toilet guys plugged their unit into electricity it tripped some of the breakers for the cottages.  Luckily, Kelly stays calm under all pressure situations & just multi-tasks her way from one thing to another.  The electrical problem will be resolved Friday.  Oh, & you may wonder why a port-a-potty needs electric.  Well, this His & Hers unit is pretty spiffy & it’s no ordinary construction site model.  It is a double washroom on wheels & has hot running water & a sink, along with hardwood floors, electric ventilation fans, lights, wallpaper & wood trim.  Looks to be normal household toilets as well.  First time I had ever seen one like this.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Several years ago, Andy was sentenced to prison. During his stay, he got along well with the guards and all his fellow inmates. The warden saw that deep down, Andy was a good person and made arrangements for Andy to learn a trade while doing his time. After three years, Andy was recognized as one of the best carpenters in the local area. Often he would be given a weekend pass to do odd jobs for the citizens of the community.... and he always reported back to prison before Sunday night was over.
The warden was thinking of remodelling his kitchen and in fact had done much of the work himself. But he lacked the skills to build a set of kitchen cupboards and a large counter top which he had promised his wife. So he called Andy into his office and asked him to complete the job for him.
But, alas, Andy refused. He told the warden, "Gosh, I'd really like to help you but counter fitting is what got me into prison in the first place".
