THESE ARE QUIET DAYS

IMG_0757

These are quiet times here at the Bayfield Bunch as we slowly approach the calming days of September.  Our long hot summer is all but over as cooler night air signals the coming of another Season change. Gearing down with late Summer we feel the welcoming pull of Autumn upon us. Ever closer approaches the day’s ahead & our southwest travels. Another short month from now we will only have a couple weeks left before once again venturing out on the highways & by-ways of North America. There will be new roads, new routes, & new scenery this year. There will be a few routine plans & a generous helping of thoughts requiring spur of the moment changes as well I'm sure. There will be adventuress challenges & meaningful decisions to be made. We will have some new things to consider this year as we make our way through another warm southwest winter:))

Zurich Ontario had their annual Bean Festival this week-end & Kelly slipped over to the event Saturday to pick us up a mess of beans. Kelly is a bean person.  Me, not so much. For supper Saturday night I ate some beans & almost exploded. I think I may have finally figured out the link to an uncomfortable condition I have had for the past number of years. Beans & bloating!!  I must have slowly developed some kind of intolerance to beans over the years & last night was the worst ever. The way I see it now....no more beans for this guy, ever!! Yaaaaaay:))
DSC_4497
On the way back from Zurich with her load of beans Saturday, Kelly had spotted 4 rural properties for sale. All on the same road & all within a 7 or 8 mile stretch of each other. Two by Real Estate & 2 by private owner. We already knew the Real Estate one's were probably farms & way to expensive but there is always a chance the private sales were maybe just an acre or two so I drove out that way this morning. Upon closer inspection of the private For Sale signs I saw they were both 100 acre working farms so that was the end of that little trip. We have a big Wind Turbine controversy brewing in this section of Huron County right now & I'm wondering if these 4 farmers, on the same road, so close to each other selling their properties at the same time, have some inside information on the coming of Wind Turbines to the area.

A wee bike ride through the countryside this afternoon, a stop for gas, & home. Like I said.....these are quiet days right now & the best place for me to be on these hot & muggy humid afternoons is inside where it's cool. Am hoping our incoming rain storm due in the next 24 hours brings cooler air with it. Maybe my interest will spike & my energy levels will grow.........................

SHORT POST TONIGHT……..TIRED

DSC_0001

Continued with my window cleaning this morning & somehow slid into full blown cleaning & purging mode. We are long overdue for getting rid of old stuff that no longer serves a purpose. First to go was an old uncomfortable loveseat/couch out of the sunroom we never sat on anyway. We've got a lot more junk to go.  Also changed our sunroom around.  The humidity wore me down today & I never finished the Ikea post I had planned.  Maybe tomorrow…………..

A BUSY DAY IN THE DESERT A FEW YEARS AGO

DSC_0053

HIKING IN THE KOFA MOUNTAINS SOUTH-EAST OF QUARTZSITE ARIZONA

Pheebs & I saddled up the Jeep this morning & rode into town on our weekly errands run. Gas, a few groceries & a Tuna sandwich from the Deli to split between us. Turns out that was about the highlight of our day. We were back home before 10 & I started on one of my least favorite jobs....cleaning windows. That took up the rest of the morning & I still have more to do. We are back into a warm spell again & by noon the humidity was building.  So, that was it for this guy in the window cleaning department. Another window, another day.

THIS WAS OUR TEMPORARY DINETTE FOR A COUPLE DAYS

Couple posts ago I told you how we had to move several times in one day while boondocked south of Quartzsite Arizona. Today I will tell you the reasons for us being there in the first place.

OUR LEGACY BLUE FLAME HEATER INSTALLATION
Quartzsite Arizona in mid to late January every winter is an RV'ers mecca. Thousands upon thousands of of RV's converge on this tiny little dusty desert town to take advantage of the countless vendors, dealers, Big Top tent deals & shows. RV's scattered across the desert floor for as far as one can see. It makes a bee hive of activity look tame by comparison. It is a favorite rallying point for large groups of friends who travel there from all over the North American continent & is the largest annual gathering of RV's in the world. Despite our dislike for masses of people, traffic congestion, & crowd chaos we were attracted to Quartzite every January for our first 3 years of traveling. But, it was the last time we boondocked there that we had a definite purpose in mind.

DOING A LITTLE BROWSING IN QUARTZSITE ARIZONA
In the Autumn of 07, while heading west on I-70 we had a big Kansas cross wind rip out & destroy our side awning. That is a short story in itself. We knew the best place to get a new awning was probably going to be in Quartzite the following January so we waited until then & headed into the desert about 6 miles south of the tiny town & set up camp for a week.

DSC_0013-3

THE ‘BIG TENT’ AT QUARTZSITE
Took the car & headed into town making our way through the maelstrom of people, searching for an awning installer. Didn't take long to find one so made arrangements for them to come out into the desert & replace our ripped awning with a new one. Also decided at this time to have a Legacy Blue Heat flame Heater installed. They are much cheaper to run than the rig's propane gobbling furnace. We headed over to a vendor called Granny's & made arrangements for a fellow bring & install the heater. Both the awning installer guys & the Blue Flame heater installer guy ended up coming on the same morning so things were really hopping. I had myself in the same mix at the time trying to measure & cut out some sunscreen material to fit our rig's driving area windows. By the way, there was no way either of those installers could have found us way out in the desert with so many rigs scattered around so when they phoned to let us know they were on the way I quickly drove out to the highway & watched for their service trucks coming down the highway. Gave em a big wave & had them follow me through a maze of Mesquite shrubs, Saguaro cactus & hard packed rocky desert floor to our camp site.DSC_0015-1

YOU CAN SEE WHAT’S LEFT OF OUR TATTERED AWNING

NEW AWNING INSTALLATION
It was a week of busy decisions & another major decision we made was to get rid of all the furniture in our coach. RV furniture in the mid range rigs is anything but comfortable. With the few tools we had along I totally dismantled the whole dinette set, unbolted the couch/bed from the floor & did the same thing with the tub chair. Piled everything outside except the couch-bed combination & threw a tarp over the stuff. Next morning we loaded it all into the Santa Fe & drove it into Quartzsite to a vendor called, 'The Gambler' & sold it. Upon leaving Quartzsite a few days after that we stopped at the Gambler again & he had a few of his boys wrestle the couch/bed thing out the door. We headed east out of Quartzite with just a couple small wood chairs to sit on in the back & I slept on the floor with the dogs for a couple nights until we were finally able to do a little shopping at an Ikea store south of Phoenix Arizona. I will tell you about our Ikea experience in my next post...............................

I LIKE IT WHEN WE HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO

DSC_0019

I like it when we have somewhere to go that doesn't involve cities, large towns, traffic chaos, or hordes of people. This morning we had a few things to attend to in my old home town of Tavistock so that meant a nice leisurely couple hour’s drive through the countryside there & back. And Pheebs even agreed, what a fine morning for a drive it was too.

DSC_6877

Not a lot going on today but this afternoon we did go have a look at a 5.3 acre piece of country property west of Zurich Ontario complete with a small house, mature trees, apple orchard, etc. Probably the nicest property we have seen in this area so far. Out of curiosity, Kelly phoned the Realtor when we got home & it had just been sold. I wasn't surprised. Somebody sure got themselves one heck of a great deal.

DSC_6904

I wonder how many people save their blog comments. I do. Not sure why I do but I have saved all comments on my blog since the beginning. I have files upon files stored in my Hotmail account. Maybe I am a comment hoarder. I don't know if I have a real purpose for storing the comments & yet, I think I do.   I have never been able to just hit the 'delete' button at the end of each day & dump them all into the trash bin.  The comments come from caring people who have shown an interest & taken the time to read & comment on something I have written.  This never ceases to amaze me.  Twice, in periods of self doubt, or was it a false sense of confidence,  I have de-activated my ‘comments section’ & twice I have re-activated it.   That should tell me something.    Don't think I would be too far out if I said 98% of all those comments were well meaning & written with good intentions. Maybe that's why I save them. Maybe that's why I horde them & keep them all in a safe place just a few keystrokes away. I've known people to horde food. Cupboards stuffed full of canned goods from years ago. They still shop for tomato soup every week despite having a couple dozen cans of tomato soup on the shelf from maybe as far back as 1956. Older folks who lived through the depression years of the 30's have been known to do this. It is a comfort to them knowing the larder is well stocked in case we all slide down into that black food stamp depression abyss again. Maybe there is a connection here as to why I not only save all my comments, but all the fine emails people have sent over the years as well. Maybe it's a comfort to me knowing my mental larder is well stocked in case I should slide into that black state of self doubt so many of us have had to deal with at various times in our lives.

OUR AREA’S OLD ORDER MENNONITE/AMISH FARMS STILL HAVE FINE WORKING WINDMILLS

GROANER'S CORNER:(( An 80 year old lady was being interviewed by the local news station because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's
occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered. "Interesting," the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she'd first married a banker when she was in her early 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, later on a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's, a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked her why she had married four men with such diverse careers. She smiled and explained "I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go".

REMEMBERING A DAY OF FRAZZLED NERVES IN QUARTZSITE ARIZONA

DSC_0019

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE PHOTOS OF KELLY TAKEN IN QUARTZSITE ARIZONA

It was one year ago yesterday (Tuesday) that a devastating Tornado roared in off Lake Huron just 12 miles north of us & devastated the town of Goderich Ontario with the loss of one life, 37 injured & 300 buildings damaged. I remember how dark it became that Sunday afternoon but had no idea what was taking place on the shores of Lake Huron just a short distance away. I am still a bit disoriented sometimes when I go to Goderich now because it looks so different with all of the large trees gone in the downtown area & large gaping holes where buildings once stood. Work is still ongoing daily to repair & rebuild the town.
I BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE AREA WHERE THE TORNADO'S LONE FATALITY OCCURRED......A CRANE OPERATOR

A YEAR AGO THE SALT CONVEYOR BELT OPERATOR OF THAT LONG GRAY BOOM LOST HIS LIFE WHEN THE TORNADO STRUCK

DSC_0005-001

TODAY, THAT CONVEYER HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THIS NEW BLUE CONVEYER BELT HOUSING

We've had our Jeep Wrangler just over 2 years now & I remember the day driving it back from Waterloo Ontario to Bayfield well. The Jeep was kind of unlike any other vehicle I had ever driven. With it's short wheelbase I found it a bumpity ride with it’s own unique bunch of odd quirks, jerks, hips & hops.  It’s those quirks & jerks that keep it’s driver well aware & on full driver alert at all times. Over the years all those hips, hops, & bumpity bumps have disappeared. Or, so it would seem until I happen to drive another vehicle. Today we took the Hyundai Santa Fe to visit my Uncle Harry in Mitchell & whenever I drive that car I am amazed at how smooth & soft the ride is. Of course that is the norm for the majority of vehicles nowadays & I can easily forget that when I am putt putting along in my little Jeep which just seems so normal to me know with it’s seemingly smooth quirks, jerks, & hippity hops.

IMG_0152

UNCLE HARRY’S DOCTOR DROPPED IN TO SEE HIM WHILE WE WERE THERE THIS MORNING

Bit of a slow writing day for me so thought I would tell you about how one day the Bayfield Bunch, while boondocked in Quartzsite Arizona, were completely set up in 3 separate locations, all within a couple miles of each other......and all on one day. As most readers know, we do not like to be within earshot of any other RV'ers. No, we aren't the noisy ones, but many times our neighbors have been & neither Kelly or I have any tolerance whatsoever for somebody else's loud music, generator, ATV, or alcohol fuelled hollerin & hootin. If we can here people talking.....we are waaaaaay too close. As well, in the past we have camped with 3 dogs & out of simple consideration for other people we stay well away so our dogs wouldn't bother anyone by wandering onto their site.  Boondocking is our favorite way to go but even that can get crowded sometimes.  We had been in a quiet section of desert about 6 miles south of Quartzsite Arizona for nearly a week. There were many other rigs around but they were far enough away not to bother us with their noise. Here then, is where my story picks up about the time we had 3 different locations in one day...........................

DSC_0010

UP ON THE RIG’S ROOF SETTING UP OUR SOLAR PANELS IN THE DESERT SOUTH OF QUARTZSITE

The big 40' Class A Motorhome diesel pusher rolled leisurely into our area, slowed down, & stopped. Oh oh!! We watched closely & had our fingers crossed that he would move on because there was lots of room & wide open spaces where we were. He didn't!! The couple got out, unhooked their car, made a slow pass around the area in it, came back & moved their motorhome even closer to us. We had a sinking feeling that our quiet & peaceful little corner of Eden was about to end. When we saw the driver unlock a bin door & begin to pull out a bunch of orange traffic cones we knew the writing was on the wall. He walked out from his rig placing those cones around a very large area. Obviously more motorhomes were on the way for some kind of big Rally. We were beat, & our only sane option was to pack up our whole campsite & head off in search of a quieter spot. I am not a confrontational person, & besides, this was BLM land & nobody has any claim to any spot.  I'm sure they were fine folks in that motorhome but our experience has shown that many rigs huddled together mean much big people noise & people noise is not one of our favorite things. We did wonder however, why he picked this area close to us when there were numerous other spacious areas all around. Just one of those people things I guess I'll never understand.

DSC_0022

OUR ORIGINAL SITE BEFORE THE BIG 40’ DIESEL PUSHER ROLLED IN

Took us the best part of an hour to get everything packed away. Awning up, outside furniture loaded, bicycles put on the rack, flagpole down, satellite dish dismantled, mats picked up, wires unhooked, firewood loaded, doggy toys gathered up, inside things stowed away, slides in, jacks up, etc. etc.

DSC_0021

KOFA MOUNTAINS

On one of our morning walks earlier in the week we had come across an area about a half mile away & decided that if we had to move because of congestion at some point, this would be a good spot to go. So, that's where we went.  Should mention this was in January while the ‘Big Tent’ Quartzsite thing was going on, so thousands upon thousands of RV’s were in the area. Took us 3 trips with the car carrying things to the new site but soon we were in the process of re-setting up our new digs. It was actually a nicer site than the one we just left. A few more trees, a nice dry creek bed & further away from all the other rigs & rallies. Kelly made some nice stone Inuksuk's & set up her Ghost Mountain Agave stocks in a little desert landscaping bed. Got everything re-assembled without too many problems & it wasn't long before we were sitting in our favorite gravity chairs relaxing on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon again. The turmoil of having to move had settled down, Kelly was on the phone talking to her Mom & Dad in Spencerport, New York, doggy guys were snoozing on the new outside mat & I was happily tipped back in my chair reading my book. Nobody near by, lots of room all around us & everything was right with world once again.

DSC_0012

DSC_0021 DSC_0010

ALL NICELY SET UP IN OUR SECOND LOCATION AS KELLY TALKS TO HER MOM & DAD IN SPENCERPORT NY

And then..............we saw a Class A Motorhome coming, followed by a 5th wheel. Oh no!! Surely these people will have some respect for our privacy, right. Wrong!!!! They circled the large open area & then came right over & pulled in just a couple stone's throw away from us. And worse yet, they were towing ATV's & dirt bikes!!!! I knew our peacefully quiet desert was about to be shattered by growling & whining engines.  We couldn't believe it. With all the room & open spaces in this desert area they came right in on us. I knew this was public land & they have as much right to be here as we do, but...%$@^&**. I understand being close to people in campgrounds because that is what's expected. It just comes with the territory. But out here in the desert with acres upon acres of room??   They unloaded  all their stuff & I saw what looked like a couple cases of beer.   Started up the noisy dirt bikes & I heard one young guy holler in a loud gruff voice, "I WANNA RIDE!!!"

DSC_0917

DESERT CAMPFIRE

That was it for me right there & then, & to say my anger was over the top would be putting it mildly, but there was absolutely nothing we could do, except.......move!! And, so it was, as we once again began the process of packing up the campsite. Awning up, outside furniture loaded, bicycles put on the rack, flagpole down, satellite dish dismantled, mats picked up, wires unhooked, firewood loaded, doggy toys gathered up, inside things stowed away, slides in, jacks up, etc. etc.  And, this time I'm not going to say, "I'm sure they were fine folks in those two rig’s!!

DSC_0019
YEP, EVEN A HONEY WAGON CAN TAKE CARE OF YOUR BLACK TANK OUT IN THE QUARTZSITE DESERT SOMETIMES

We moved to a different area further back in the desert which we scouted out with the car first. Once again, nobody near us except for one Class C rig which we were considerate enough to give a wide berth. When you see a lone rig boondocked on it’s own away from others, there is usually a good reason for that.  Those people are there to enjoy the quiet desert environment & have purposely made an effort to remove themselves as far as possible from all the noise & traffic a bunch of RV’s together produce.  Both Kelly & I have great respect for people's privacy & would never ever pull into an area & go park beside the one rig that might be there. We consider that extremely thoughtless & rude!!

DSC_0013-1

OUR THIRD & FINAL LOCATION FOR THE DAY BEING SURE TO LEAVE LOTS OF ROOM BETWEEN US & THAT DISTANT CLASS C…WE ROLLED OUT A DAY LATER HEADING FOR AN IKEA STORE SOUTH OF PHOENIX, BUT THAT’S ANOTHER STORY FOR ANOTHER TIME:))

But wait, just as we were about ready for bed that night…………what was it I heard approaching across the quiet desert floor..........Awwww, twas just the wandering desert wind slipping down out of the Kofa Mountains to play gently across the desert floor under another clear moonlit Arizona sky:))

HAD BEEN A VERY FRUSTRATING DAY BUT ANOTHER FINE ARIZONA SUNSET OVER THE DOME ROCK MOUNTAINS SOOTHED OUR FRAZZLED NERVES

GROANER'S CORNER:(( And, here are a few tips for making your RVing experience the best it can be.....

- When using a public campground, a tuba placed on your picnic table will keep the campsites on either side vacant.

- Get even with a bear who raided your food bag by kicking his favorite stump apart and eating all the ants.

- You’ll never be lost if you remember that moss always grows on the north side of your compass.

- When camping, always wear a long-sleeved shirt. It gives you something to wipe your nose on.

- You can compress the diameter of your rolled up sleeping bag by running over it with your rig.

- Take this simple test to see if you qualify for solo RV'ing. Shine a flashlight into one ear. If the beam shines out the other ear, do not go into the woods alone.

- A potato baked in the coals for one hour makes an excellent side dish. A potato baked in the coals for three hours makes an excellent hockey puck.

- You can start a fire without matches by eating Mexican food, then breathing on a pile of dry sticks.

- In an emergency, a drawstring from a parka hood can be used to strangle a snoring bed mate.

- Bear bells provide an element of safety for hikers in grizzly country. The tricky part is getting them on the bears. Just after 'Happy Hour may be the best time to try.

- The sight of a bald eagle has thrilled campers for generations. The sight of a bald man, however, does absolutely nothing for the eagle.

- And last but not least....The guitar of the noisy teenager at the next campsite makes excellent kindling....................

A 24 HOUR EMOTIONAL WRINGER….:((

IMG_0140

Well, it has been a rather emotional 24 hours for us. We have had it in the back of our minds for awhile to maybe find us a second dog, not only as a companion for Pheebe but a companion for ourselves as well. We know the joy & happiness 2 or 3 best Pals can bring. Kelly spotted a nice looking dog on Kijiji Monday morning in the nearby town of Clinton. She was a 2 year old White Shepherd. A phone call to the owner confirmed she was a mild mannered dog needing a bigger home & area to run & play. Owning a pet can be a little bit like a marriage in that a perfect match will always have a better chance of success in things working out. Some folks are well suited to smaller lap dogs while others prefer larger breeds. Matching the right dog to the right person is always the key. This dog's name was Lucy.
IMG_0130
Monday night after supper Kelly, Pheebs, & I decided to drive over to Clinton & meet Lucy. At 65 pounds we knew she was going to be much larger than we had been thinking. And, she was. But, Lucy had one of those warm friendly temperaments that just makes it's way into your heart. We could tell right away she was warm ,affectionate, & loving. And, we could tell her & Pheebs would be fine together once they got to know each other. But, she was just so big. We could see Lucy's owner Tony, & Lucy’s 'Grandparents' loved her very much but the neighborhood was just too small for her wanderings.  Tony was working full time & had to make some changes. Took us nearly an hour to decide what to do.  We both had a feeling she might be too big & too independent for us & it was because of these doubts we agreed with the owner to just take her home with us for a couple days to see how things worked out.
IMG_0133I sincerely wished I could tell you things worked out perfectly, but unfortunately they did not. Kelly & I have been dog owners now for the past 17 years. Every single day for all of those years our lives have revolved around our best Pals. Our dog's have always been priority for us & we like to see them free of leashes & chains.  We have a fenced in backyard  but we made the mistake of thinking our 4' high fence would be adequate for Lucy, but it was not. Max & Checkers, also big dogs had never attempted to jump over it but within 10 minutes of bringing Lucy home she was over the gate like a deer, bounding through the neighbor's yards. She would not come to us despite our repeated calls. We had a hard time getting her back but Kelly finally lured her in close enough with some doggy treats to grab her collar. That little incident told us we had a very major problem. We could not just leave our back door open as we are accustomed to & let her have access to our yard at any time. When I took her out Monday night & Tuesday morning I had to tightly hang on to her leash as she made a second attempt at jumping over the gate. Because we have had a lot of experience with dogs I knew it wasn't first night jitters. Our neighbour's have cats & Lucy made a bee-line right for their place & gobbled up all the cat food they had left on their porch.  She then bounded off into another neighbor’s yard who we knew had a big dog.  From there it was into a third yard.  We knew right away this was going to be an on-going problem.
IMG_0136

Lucy was totally at home with us & comfortable while inside. She loved playing with all Pheebe's toys & the two of them were getting along fine despite each one playfully shoving the other one out of the way rivalling for our attention. While at the computer Lucy would come sit beside me for snuzzles. Same thing in my recliner. She was not anxious & did not show any signs of separation anxiety. She felt at home with us, & while inside we felt at home with her. However, Kelly & I had ourselves a restless night because we both understood that despite this beautiful dog's nature we were probably not going to be able to keep her.  We just had a feeling she was going to be too much dog for us to handle outside.  And, she was.
IMG_0135
Our morning walk did not go well. Had Lucy on a leash & seeing Pheebe out front running free it was a constant strain to hold her back because she has never been leash trained. We reached a wide clearing area & decided to try walking her 'off leash'.  As readers well know, we are not leash people. She was fine walking along the bush trail for about 5 minutes but she would not come when called despite our best efforts. Even a small bit of recognition would have been helpful but she was too independent & had never really been trained well to voice commands.  Pheebs took after a Squirrel in the woods with Lucy right behind her. A minute later Pheebs was back on the trail but Lucy was not. I headed off into the wood's calling for her, but nothing. Couldn't see her & couldn't hear anything. My heart sank as I kept calling & calling. Then, from way behind me I heard Kelly shout. She had spotted Lucy near the trail & got her to come with a treat. Hurried back & quickly put the leash on her but in my worried haste I made a mistake. I unknowingly clipped the leash onto her dog tag ring instead of the heavier collar ring. About 10 minutes later on the way home Pheebe spotted a bunny. With one lurch Lucy was free & headed off into the underbrush right behind Pheebs. Again we could not get her to come back despite repeated calling & offers of more treats. She headed down an embankment into a muddy creek & came back up muddy & full of burrs.  And, then she spotted the big pond.
Did I mention she had long white fur:((

Tony told us she loves water & with one big splash Lucy was in the pond & ended up swimming it’s entire length. (top photo) I was on one side & Kelly was on the other. Only hope we had of catching her was to be at the water's edge where she decided to climb out & it turned out to be Kelly's side. With a treat in hand Kelly was able to secure her collar as I made my way around the pond with her leash. Noticed right away her 2 dog tags were missing so we went back to the other end of the pond where she had broken free & located one of the two missing tags. From there it was straight home to the security of 'in the house'. We both sadly knew by this time what we had to do. We could keep Lucy for another day hoping things might be better but being around dogs as much as we have our experience told us Lucy needed a lot of space to run & she also needed a very dedicated person to work with & train her.  I found it difficult a year ago at this time being patient with Pheebe’s training & I knew I didn’t have the kind of patience anymore it would take to train Lucy properly.  And, with the way Lucy’s fur had picked up that load of burrs this morning we knew the difficulties ahead in letting her run free on our walks .  And then there was her size……………….

It's Tuesday morning as I type this. Lucy is asleep beside me in a patch of sun on the floor. Pheebs is snoozing on the couch behind me. All appears well but I know it isn’t as I wait for Lucy's fur to dry out a bit from her pond swim so I can try getting some more burrs out of her. Kelly in the meantime phoned Tony saying we would have to bring her back. He was every bit as disappointed as we were this morning that things had not worked out. I have only known Lucy less than 12 hours & here I sit typing this with tears in my eyes knowing I will have to take her back shortly. I feel every bit as sad as when we lost our Max, Checkers, & little Cora. It is just the way it is & always has been with me & dogs. I just get so attached to them so fast.  But, there are times when tough decisions have to be made for the betterment of all & this morning was one of those times. As I said before, It is extremely important to match the right person with the right dog. We came very close with Lucy, but just not quite close enough for the happy ending we had all been hoping for.

{Update} Tuesday night............... It was a tearful drive for me this morning taking Lucy back home. She rode so nice in the Jeep as I petted her soft fur. Her 'Grandma & Grandpa' were there & a big thank-you goes out to them for being so understanding. Of course I was an emotional wreck & it was not easy for me to say goodbye to this beautiful dog I had known for less than 12 hours. But, one consolation, I had the distinct feeling 'Grandma & Grandpa' were happy to see her home again. With their renewed talk of building a backyard fence.....maybe Lucy is home to stay.

BYE LUCY & WE WISH YOU ALL THE BEST…………………

Well, that's it for my day & tomorrow I will wake up & start all over again....just like we all do. One thing may have changed though. I don't think we are going to pursue our hopes for a second dog. If it's meant to be I guess it will happen someday, but in the meantime, our days of looking are over for now.  Kelly’s Okay, but I can’t handle these kinds of emotional doggy wringers.  An extra 6 dozen hugs for the Pheebs tonight..........................10-4.
