WE ARE ALL FREQUENT VISITOR’S AT….’THE PROBLEM STORE’

DSC_0039

Another fine September morning had little Sweet Pea & I on the road again. Our usual weekly errands run with a stop for gas, some groceries, & a shared turkey salad sandwich. Many years ago in the late 70’s I had come across a rather unique farm near Dungannon Ontario. It was a farm like no other. Frolicking Monkeys, Flamingos, strolling Peacocks & I may even remember a Zebra & Buffalo or two. It was a labor of love for the farm owner with fenced acres of trees & ponds for all the animals . I have been by this farm several times in recent years & everything has been maintained & kept up nicely, but most of the more exotic animals are gone now, but not all. I knew Pheebs would enjoy seeing the animals along the roadside fence line so that is where we headed, sharing our sandwich along the way.
DSC_0033

As soon as Pheebs jumped out of the Jeep she was greeted by a dozen Llamas, a couple of Horses, half a dozen Elk, (or were they Deer) and an assortment of Goats, Geese, Swans, & Ducks. And, there may have been other inhabitants there as well which we didn't see. Pheebs was so exited by the Llamas that she raced up & down along the fence line.  They had no fear of her.  If not for the fence between them, Pheebs would have been right in there bumping noses & wanting to play with the Llamas. Remember how well she got along with all the free range cows last March near Congress, Arizona.

While looking up some info for my Wednesday blog I came across a post I had written a couple years ago. It's a little something about trading in old sacks of problems for new ones. It may be relevant right now for Donna & Russ over at TRAVELS IN THERAPY as they wrestle with a frustrating problem regarding their present & future RVing plans.

DSC_0018

We will always have our little sack of problems. The weight & size may very but the sack, whether it be filled with new or old problems, remains with us whether we like it or not. And nope, no amount of 'positive thinking' makes your sack of problems go away. You may handle that sack differently than a negative or realistic thinker, but one thing is certain, we all have that ever changing sack of problems from the beginning of life to the end. To keep it simple, I will try to relate this all to the RV side of things.  And, I should add, these are only my opinions & theories:))

DSC_0019
Here's the way I see it. Through life we are constantly burdened with ever changing sacks of problems. Some bigger & heavier than others. We humans are always steady customer’s at the 'Problem Store.' It's probably the busiest store in the world. When you tire of a set of problems, you take that sack of problems to the "Problem Store & get rid of it. In other words, you deal with that specific set of problems. However, you do not walk out of that store problem free. You only trade in that sack of old problems for a sack of new problems. A sack of new problems is generally more exciting than that old sack you just traded in though. I for one sometimes tire of old problems & head off to the problem store to trade them in for some brand spanking new ones.

DSC_0030 DSC_0009-001

DSC_0037

A YOUNG SWAN

Applying this theory to the RV side of life it could go something like this.  You have a dream to be free.  A dream to live a full time RV lifestyle.   You sell your house & all your stuff.   No more problems with yard work, shovelling snow, house cleaning, not to mention all the house maintenance, taxes, house insurance, on & on & on. How nice it would be to not have to worry about all those problems. Whoooops, forgot one little thing here.

DSC_0010-001

DSC_0014-001 DSC_0012

OK, I AM JUST ‘ASSUMING’ THESE MIGHT BE ELK…MAYBE THEY ARE DEER

Despite having just been to the problem store getting rid of that whole sack of old ‘sticks & bricks’ problems you now exit the store with a new sack of problems in your hand.   Remember, it was only a trade in, & now you must begin dealing your new set of problems. Its just the way it is & there is no getting around it!!.
DSC_0026
THE LLAMAS WERE SURE FOCUSED ON THE PHEEBS

DSC_0017 DSC_0031

Your new sack is going to contain some surprises for you. Yes, there are still all the old stand-by favs like leaky plumbing, electrical headaches, leaking doors & window, carpet spills & stains, plugged toilets, hot water shortages, blackouts, leaky roofs, & furnace failures, etc. etc. But, some of the new surprises may come in the form of rooms (slides) becoming stuck & leaving you boondocked out in the middle of nowhere with no way to go anywhere. Or how about one of your hydraulic jacks not retracting & leaving you in the same position as above.   Don't laugh, both those things have happened to us. Maybe it’s a blow-out on an Interstate with the resulting flying rubber disintegrating the front of your tow vehicle, or worse yet…... fire!!

DSC_7002

NOW, I DO KNOW THESE ARE COWS FOR SURE

Other surprises hiding in your little sack of new problems might have to do with things like a sudden & messy break in a sewer line at a dumping station, wind gusts while driving or boondocking that are trying to totally eliminate you from the face of the planet, crowded campgrounds that require you to grease the sides of your unit to fit it into a space or hauling 50 or 60 feet of RV through unfamiliar large cities & crowded downtowns.   Breakdowns, accidents, soaring fuel costs, shaky security, sudden or long term health issues with no immediate health services around, no personal physician, & no Tim Hortons for a thousand miles in any direction.   The endless list just goes on & on & on. How about the fact of living in small box about 8 feet wide, 15 or 40 feet long for weeks, months, & years at a time.  All those things can probably be found tucked away neatly in your new sack of problems just waiting for their 15 minutes of undivided attention.

DSC_0021
Anyway, I think you get my drift when I say the RV dream lifestyle has to looked at through totally realistic eyes. However, don't look too hard or you just might be forced to abandon your dream focus. You just may resolve yourself to hanging onto your old sack of problems. After all, at least they are predictable.  You may convince yourself that at least with them you know what to expect in their usual boring humdrum routine.
DSC_0029

But, you know what, gimme a new set of problems & let me go live & play where I wanna be. Give me the cold nights, the big winds, the broken water pump, & the flat tires. Just don't make me grind along with the same heavy old sack of boring problems day after day.

DSC_0013

Hmmmmmm, I think I just may be long overdue for a good old trip to the 'Problem Store'.....10-4!!

HOW OUR BLOG HELPED LEAD A CALIFORNIA COUPLE TO ARIZONA:))

DSC_8230

Another hot humid day but thankfully we have a cool down coming for the week-end.  Cranked up the A/C in the Santa Fe & headed off to see Uncle Harry in Mitchell.  He was looking & feeling much better than the last time we saw him at the hospital last week in Stratford.  In fact, I noticed a big improvement in him today from where he has been the last few months.

DSC_8510Now, to continue with the second of two stories stemming from our boondocking stay near Tombstone Arizona back in February of 2008.  The second fellows name who emailed us was Pat & he had been stationed at Fort Huachuca years earlier. We had found a spot along the Charleston Road & San Pedro river for a couple nights until a border patrol officer & a State trooper came along & told us we would have to move from that location. Pat knew the exact spot we were first camped along the banks of the San Pedro & shared some memories of his military days in that area. The Border Patrol officer told us of a BLM location about 3 or 4 miles from where we were that might be OK for us so we packed up & moved. The spot turned out to be totally excellent & we stayed there about a week.  Met a charming older ranch couple at that boondocking spot as well. Jack & Gwen came through twice a day in their old Ford truck watering & feeding their free ranging cattle.  It was not unusual for us to have cows feeding nearby. It gave us a nice rural ranch feeling.  Little did we know, our meeting Jack & Gwen would later have a direct bearing on a couple in California we had never met but were in email contact with.  Pat & Nancy were about to meet Jack & Gwen…….just a year later or so.

We occasionally heard from Pat over the next few months & years although we never did meet Gwen & Jack again.  Pat & Nancy continued to keep tabs on our travels & especially whenever we were Ranch sitting in McNeal near Sierra Vista. At one point while they were traveling in the Tombstone area, Pat emailed us again wondering where that spot was we had boondocked before. I emailed back the directions & they headed for the spot to camp for a bit. While there, they of course met Jack & Gwen on their cattle rounds.

Now, let’s fast forward a year or so to Pat & Nancy’s ‘second visit’ to the Tombstone Hills boondocking spot, & their second meeting with Jack & Gwen.

DSC_0001

MORNING WALK ON A SECTION OF ‘ROAD’ JACK & GWEN DROVE OVER EACH & EVERY DAY….SEVERAL TIMES!!

While talking with Gwen & Jack again, they expressed an interest in having a look at some real estate in the area. Turns out Jack & Gwen's daughter-in-law happened to be a Real Estate agent in Sierra Vista. To make a long story short, a quick on the spot phone call was made & a meeting was arranged.  In the course of several days some properties were looked at near Tombstone & one near Sierra Vista. Pat & Nancy ended up buying the 10 acre parcel near Sierra Vista.

I think it was at this point Pat emailed us to say how influential our travels in the area had been on their decision to move from California to the Sierra Vista area of Arizona. They had already cleared some land & had the basic ground work done for building a new house. Still living in California, Pat emailed us directions on how to find their property & for us to go have a look see.  We were once again Ranch sitting at Jeanie & Ray’s place at the time near McNeal so we drove over to the San Pedro Valley & managed to locate their property.  Photos below show some of the groundwork they had already completed.

Last year we received another email from Pat saying they had made the move from California, their new house was nearly complete, & for us to drop around. We were Ranch sitting for Jeanie & Ray at that time again. My Aunt Jean was visiting from Florida, so on our way to Sierra Vista & the CORONADO NATIONAL MONUMENT with Jeanie & Ray’s truck to pick up our Jeep (which was in a garage there with a flat tire) we stopped in to meet Pat & Nancy.  They again mentioned that it was the result of answering our question on the RV NET FORUM & their subsequent following of our blogging travels the past 4 years that they were now happily living within sight of the mighty Huachuca Mountains.  Can’t tell you how warm that makes me feel inside to know that our Bayfield Bunch blog had largely been responsible for leading Pat & Nancy to this quiet retirement property in Arizona’s scenic San Pedro Valley.  Something we did, led directly to someone else’s happiness.  Now, how nice is that at the end of a day:))

What a great spot they have with scenic views of the Dragoon Mountains to the east, south-east to the Mule Mountains, south-west to the Huachuca Mountains & west to the Whetstone mountains .  Pat just sent me the following two photos which shows a newly added surrounding porch.  And, if I remember correctly, this is all being run on solar power from a large garage roof mounted bank of solar panels located at the east side of the house.  Never a lack of sunshine in Arizona:))  And, as a footnote…..sure hope I got all my facts straight in this story because I sure had to scramble through a lot of old dusty cobwebs to remember everything & where all the photos were hiding….

And, on another note, I enjoyed, and am in full agreement with Debra's post over at FIND AN OUTLET. No candy coated stuff going on here again as Debra steps up & tells us what she thinks. And again, as many times in the past, I have thought the exact same way she does about things.  I have a lot of respect for people who are able to think realistically & even more respect for those who can take that kind of thinking & lay it out for others to read & think about............ This time she writes about all those so called, 'Self Help' books that keep piling onto the market from time to time.  Couldn’t agree with you more Deb…..:))

HUDSON HORNETS COMING TO CONGRESS, ARIZONA

DSC_0079

Always a nice feeling to slide past Labor Day week-end which unofficially marks the end of summer.  Gloomy gray skies led to a rainy morning which was fine.   Endless sunny days can get a little too routine after awhile.  Like to see a good old thunderstorm come crashing through once & awhile just to break up the weather patterns.

---

Always amazes me how coincidence’s sometimes happen.  Some long time readers may remember a post I wrote entitled SERGEANT JOHN & HIS HUDSON HORNETS.  That post explains why we were in the south-east end of Arizona in 08, who Sergeant John is, & how we met him over 3 years ago.  I have no idea what John’s rank in the military was but he reminded me of a Sergeant kind a guy so I nicknamed him Sarge. We already know a lot of people named John so figured Sarge would easily set him apart:))

LOOKING WEST TOWARDS SIERRA VISTA & THE HUACHUCA MOUNTAINS

DSC_1141

We were boondocked on a high piece of ground east of Sierra Vista Arizona & just a few miles west of Tombstone. Only a few hundred yards south of the Charleston Road . We had corresponded with Sarge via emails in the previous couple days regarding boondocking spots in the area. On his way home from Fort Huachuca to Elfrida one day, he stopped by our boondocking site to say Hello. It was only a few weeks later I wrote about Sergeant John & his Hudson Hornets.

DSC_0025 DSC_0035

DSC_0044

AND NO, THAT IS NOT ‘THE SARGE’ IN THE BACK SEAT OF HIS HUDSON HORNET

Hadn’t heard from the Sarge in a long time until an email rolled in a few days ago. He had been catching up on a few of my posts & noticed we had bought a house in Congress, Arizona. Now, here’s where the coincidence comes in…………….John & Jackie just bought a house in Congress as well & as it turns out it is only a few miles from our Ghost Town Road house. We will practically be neighbors. As soon as their house in Elfrida is sold they will be moving to their new digs in Congress. Very likely early this winter sometime.

---

Now, there is a second set of coincidences that began at this very same time with the very same question we had posted on the RV NET forum. This second set of coincidences resulted in us meeting another couple this past winter at their newly built home near Sierra Vista Arizona.  And, that new house on 10 acres of land had a direct connection to the Bayfield Bunch going back to February of 2009.   I will relate that story in Wednesday’s post.

---

Welcome to BONNIE HAILE for hopping on board our Blog Followers list.  Nice to have you along Bonnie & hopefully before too long we’ll have the big wheels rolling again for another winter season in the south-west.

---

Had myself a little chuckle at Louisburg Larry’s note in the Shoutbox a couple days ago where he said, “Al, your attitude is so much better this summer. I’m glad to see you happy all over”.  Well Larry, I sure wish I could agree with you on that one but it has again been a very difficult summer.  Let’s just say I have put forth a stronger effort lately to keep myself out of the Blogger soup.  Been trying to keep my posts a bit on the lighter side, tone down my opinions, tap into my humorous & creative side, & keep my grumbling & complaining to a minimum.  Have also been a bit more careful with my thoughts & feelings.  I have a tendency to get a little too over the top in that department & it sometimes has a habit of coming back to bite me.  But, thanks for noticing anyway Larry…….appreciate that:))

TWO PHOTOS THEN & NOW, OR IS IT……..NOW & NOW?

DSC_6992

THE WAY THINGS WERE DONE IN THE OLD DAYS

Wandered around for awhile this morning waiting for the great squawking bird of enthusiasm to alight on my shoulder & spike my day.  No bird came.  Figured I’d fire the bike up for a run but the sad little face sitting by the gate changed my plans.  Minutes later Pheebs & I hit the road for a 2 hour Monday morning country road Jeep tour.  She loves riding in the Jeep & is as good as gold when it comes to traveling.  Split a hamburger at a roadside restaurant in the little hamlet of Auburn.  Later stopped for a few photos, a stretch, & we were back home before noon.  Just as well, it turned hot & muggy again:((

---

Mark & Bobbie have themselves some excitement going on over at the Box Canyon Blog.  I'll give you a couple hints....'Bobbie thought it was easy to drive and that it rode nice''. Mark said, 'it didn't feel any bigger than Petroleous Rex'. Better slide on over & check out GOLDILOCKS:))
---

Yes, I know loading up some clothes & stuff into the rig 6 weeks before we leave is waaaaay on the early side but it is the psychological lift it gives me & that is the important part. A nice travel feeling for the moment. When one is as travel oriented as I am, one grasps at as many travel straws as one can.

AND THE WAY THINGS ARE DONE TODAY AS WELL………………….PHEEBS & I SPOTTED THESE HARD WORKING FELLAS & THEIR HORSES THIS MORNING

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Two fellers were in desperate need of cash, but admittedly were a bit cowardly.
So the one suggested they break into the Amish market.
The logic being that since the Amish were non-resistant, even if they were caught, no harm could befall them.
Thus they carried out their plot.
However, just as they were breaking into the cash register, the owner turned on the lights and confronted them, a shotgun pointed directly at them.
Calmly, the Amish man said, Boys, I would never do thee any harm yet you are standing where I am about to shoot.

HMMMMMM, WHAT WILL I WEAR, WHAT WILL I WEAR??

DSC_6977

A FEW PHOTOS TONIGHT FROM MY COMPUTER CHAIR IN THE SUN ROOM

I found myself once again this morning standing in front of my closet with the same question on my mind I have every year about this time. What do I wear? Not for today of course, but for the winter months in the South-west. We seem to pack two thirds more clothes than we ever wear & every year we tell ourselves we are going to be smarter about that next time. We never are. Winter temps can go from mostly warm to downright hot in the daytime & cool to dam cold at night so one needs clothes to cover those wide ranges. When boondocking, laundromats can be few & far between so one needs to carry a generous helping of clean clothes. But, if we spend a fair bit of time at our Ghost Town Road digs & buy a washer this winter, maybe we won't need as many clothes. Decisions, decisions. I did leave some clothes hanging in a closet at the house last March but of course haven't a clue now what I left.

DSC_6983 ---

Another fine weather morning so busied myself around the Motorhome. Solar batteries to be checked, a little more cleaning & of course some clothes to begin loading up. About 6 weeks before we leave so there is plenty to do. Just a super great time of the year & I enjoy being busy with the end result of once again being back on the road. With the bulk of summer's boredom rapidly disappearing behind me, I think I just might be mighty darn close to letting a great big smile slip across this older aging mug of mine:))

DSC_6986

Can't really remember when the last time was I ever tucked my shirt into my pants but I'm guessing it was about the time I was maybe 40 pounds lighter than I am now. And, that was quite awhile ago. I remember a time when wearing a button up shirt outside your pants was considered, sloppy. How many times did I hear my Mother say, back in public school days, "tuck your shirt in!!" I recall it seemed like only older overweight guys walked around with their shirts pulled out. Yep, well welcome to the world of 'overweight & older' AL:((

---
Labor Day week-end 10 years ago today marked a turning point for Kelly & I. It was one decade ago today we drove through the entrance here at the Five Seasons Estates, stopped to look at a board with 'homes for sale' & spotted one that looked affordable & promising. Around the corner & down a Pine tree lined street we went & there it was, last one on the left. Two short months later we moved lock, stock, & barrel from the old farmhouse to where we live today. Our unit & grounds did not look like they do now & our first 4 years here kept us busy making many changes. Those were enjoyable years:))

AND A BIG HAPPY WELCOME TO………..SEPTEMBER:))

DSC_6973

It is usually the soft gentle bump bump of a cold little nose on my nose that begins my day. It is always the very slightest of bumps.  The bumper want's to be absolutely sure she is not disturbing me. If I respond with a quiet 'no' the bumping stops, but if I respond with a whispered 'hey you' I am immediately smothered in slurpy smooches, a powerful wagging tail, & the most excited & happy little dog in the whole world. Pheebs somehow knows not to bother me in the night despite my rolling back & forth a half dozen times. Maybe it's a change in my breathing or a deeper sigh. Maybe it's a roll onto my back or maybe an arm up in the air, but whatever it is, she seems to know when I am waking up. Every morning begins the same. Every morning begins with the 'bump bump' of a cold little doggy nose & the rapid thump thumping of a happy little doggy tail on my bed. Darn nice way to start the day I'd say:))
IMG_3246 IMG_0178

Nice feeling to flip the calendar this morning & see that long hot & humid month of August slip behind us. Don't have to worry about August again until next year. Bonus. September will slide by quickly after this long week-end. And, surprise-surprise......I found my annual RV check list's for loading up the rig. Found em right where I left em, right under a plastic bin filled with rechargeable batteries & chargers.

DSC_0009

There really was no need for heading to town this morning but Pheebs had me half drove bonkers wanting to go for a ride in the Jeep. Made ourselves up a short list of grocery un-needables & off we went. She knows I generally pick up a sandwich in the supermarket Deli so that of course topped the list. Between the two of us we had that Turkey sandwich gone before we even got out of the parking lot. One of the items I picked up this morning was a box of aspirins. Upon arriving home I was totally surprised to find the bottle actually filled to the top with...........aspirins. This had to be a first!!  Usually, items like that contain two thirds cotton & one third product. Must have been a filling error on the assembly line & I'll bet Bayer has a full blown investigation going on as to how & where about 103 aspirins went missing.

DOGGY IN A BEAN FIELD THIS MORNING

GROANER'S CORNER:(( Jim Finn, the noted biologist, was stumped. He'd spent months studying the little green frogs in the Keefo swamp. The population, despite all efforts at predator control, was declining at an alarming rate.  Finally, Finn went to the chemistry department at his college to see if anyone there might be able to help. Tom Trom looked into the problem, and came up with a solution. The little frogs had succumbed to a chemical change in the swamp's water, and simply couldn't stay coupled long enough to reproduce. Tom brewed up a new adhesive, made from a dash of this, a zoss of that, and most critically, one part sodium.

"You mean?.... " Jim said when told.
"Yes," said Tom, "They needed mono-sodium glue to mate."
