YUP, WE GIDDY UPPED TO WIKIEUP….WITH A STOP AT BURROW CREEK

SUNRISE FROM MY BEDROOM WINDOW ON LEFT & LIVING ROOM WINDOW AT RIGHT

The Jeeps dusty wheels hit the Ghost Town Road pavement about 8:35 this morning & less than 10 minutes later we swung north on the JOSHUA TREE PARKWAY heading for a funny sounding little place by the name of WIKIEUP Arizona, 65 miles away.

DSC_0007

It was only about 3 or 4 miles north of the highway 71 interchange that we spotted our first Joshua Tree.  One here, a couple over there, & soon enough they were everywhere.  My mind races thinking, ‘hmmmm, wonder how could we get about a dozen of those big trees in the Jeep for our yard’.  Illegal of course, plus we had Pheebers in the back, so no room:))

DSC_0009

This is a nice stretch of 2 & mainly 4 lane highway winding easily & climbing gently through the Hualapai Mountains and Aquarius Cliffs.  Traffic was light as we enjoyed the 20 & 30 miles vistas from mountain top to mountain top.  We had heard of a campground at Burrow Creek so that was our first stop.

DSC_0027

OUR FIRST VIEW OF THE BURROW CREEK CAMPGROUND

Hard to miss this one if you know where the big bridge is.  And, you have to know where big bridge is because you have to cross it.  The BURROW CREEK CAMPGROUND, visible from atop the bridge, lies at the base of a road on the bridges southwest side.  Easier to see the bridge from the Burrow Creek campground than it is to see the Burrow Creek campground from the bridge.

Nice tucked away campground on the banks of water filled Burrow Creek.  To have water in any kind of river or creek at this time of year in the south-west is definitely not the norm.  I was surprised at how many spacious sites were here.  And, each one with picnic table & shelter.  This is a well maintained, clean, & scenic campground which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone.  No electricity or water at the sites but the full size modern washrooms are all spic n span.  Outside water taps for refilling buckets & drinking water fountains.  We saw big blue Herons cruising up & down the river among the large Sycamore & Cottonwood trees.  Didn’t see any burros but we saw evidence of them along a nearby walking trail heading to the river.  And, here’s the best part….there were only two RV’s in the whole place.  Now, how nice is that for peace & quiet along with big starry nights:))

CLEAN WASHROOMS WITH ANIMAL PROOF TRASH DISPOSAL

Had myself an annoying little camera problem here which I didn’t realize until after we had left.  Third time this has happened but the exposure compensation feature on my Nikon D90 somehow changed itself from my programed –1.0 underexposed setting to - 4.0. underexposed, making my Burrow Creek photos very dark.  I have no idea what is occasionally causing this problem but I was able to salvage & restore them to a usable state using my Picasa photo editing program.

Breezed into Wikieup shortly after 10.  Not a lot there & anything & everything is located right along both sides of the highway for about mile.  Made a U turn at a historical marker on the town’s northern edge & worked our way slowly back.

Had a little time to kill so drove through & stopped at the HIDDEN OASIS RV PARK.  It is evident right from the time you drive in that a lot of work is going on here at the office center by some very hard working & landscape knowledgeable people.  Palm trees, small pond complete with real birds, bubbling waters & a big smiley metal mouthed Alligator.  Lots of newly planted shrubs & colorful flowers.  A recently cemented wide pathway leads to the top of a man-made dirt & rock waterfall.  This pathway is lined with flowers, shrubs & a well constructed fence type railing.  Nice to hear water running down the rocks to a small garden where birds are again gathered around a small circulating pond.  A large Quonset looking metal building which Kelly said was really nice inside.  Small restaurant, bake & gift shop.  Sincerely hope this place does well because it looks like a labor of love to me where someone has taken a dream & is in the process of turning it into a successful RV Park venture.  My guess it that it was an older RV Park that someone has bought & is bringing things up to speed with their own creative imagination.

Main reason we had come to Wikieup other than a change of pace from working on our house, was Joe’s place.  Kelly had heard about & read on line about an eatery that has become known far & wide not only for it’s uniqueness but it’s BBQ food as well. The outside is not exactly your well manicured & pristine looking Cracker Barrel, but these dusty little out of the way southwest towns & places are why we like it here so much.  If we hadn’t heard of Joe’s BBQ reputation though, we might just have breezed right on by.  But, we had heard, so in we went.

HAD A FEELING THIS WAS A MUSICALLY ORIENTED PLACE

EAT AT JOE'S BBQ is a ‘no frills’ kind of place & has made TRIP ADVISOR & the ARIZONA HIGHWAYS magazine.  It’s not glitzy, it’s not fitzy, & it’s not foo foo.  Just one moderately sized room with picnic type tables & sound equipment set up for live music in one corner.  No baked Lobster tails in marinated Louisiana shrimp sauce sautéed over simmering Columbia Clams & Oregon Oyster broth in the half shell here.  No Sireeeee!!  Joe himself was at one end of the room busy with his laptop while Rose, Joe’s friendly wife, looked after our BBQ needs.  Minutes after sitting down we were knee deep in BBQ delights.

SMILING ROSE CHECKS US OUT

Kelly had a baby back rib sandwich while I had a pulled pork & brisquet sandwich.  Sides of beans, cole slaw, & fries.  And yup, I did it again!!!!!!  Enough good food their for my teenage stomach alright….if I still had a teenage stomach.  My Senior tummy struggled to clean up my plate & I nearly had to be lifted into the Jeep.  Oh, forgot to mention the big chocolate ice cream cone I got before leaving……………Sure didn’t have any room for any supper tonight but I sure did have room for a big glass of the best tasting stuff in the whole world….. ‘Pumpkin Spice Eggnog.  Ohhhhhh, woe is me:((

CHECK OUT THE MENU’S SOUP OF THE DAY >>>

When we entered Joe’s BBQ, Jimi Hendrix was filling the air with, ‘All Along The Watchtower’ & when we left, Joe Walsh ushered us out the door with his great mesmerizing ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ guitar licks.  BBQ Joe is a big Joe Walsh fan.  Both those tunes have always been on my all time old memory lane favorites list.  Now, how groovy is that for a lot of us older hippy types eh.

Uneventful drive back to Congress.  Just sat back & enjoyed all the marvelous Arizona scenery going by.  A quick stop at the Post Office & we rolled through our gates at 12:40.  Just in time to get into my recliner for a few much needed zzzzzzz’s:))

Thought I had made it through the day without transplanting any Cactus…..until I saw some Cactus I had planted Wednesday, laying on top of the ground looking a bit nibbled.  Awwww Nuts….Rabbits!!!!  For sure, Pheebs is going to have to spend more time on Bunny patrol.

SHOULD WE BE THINKING OF A SMALLER RIG, MAYBE NO TOW VEHICLE………

DSC_7398

I OFTEN HAVE CURIOUS ONLOOKERS IN THE GARDEN

We had another Cactus pick-up this morning.  Jackie, from Elfrida’s Jackie & John had left a message on the phone saying she had some more Cactus to get rid of over at their digs on highway 89.  Didn’t take Kelly & I long to pile into the Jeep & head out on another Congress Cactus rescue.  Jackie had one big old Prickly Pear in a rustic pot plus 3 small Golden Barrel Cacti for us.  Also gave us a dozen Golden Barrel seed pods.  We have no idea what we’re doing with all this cactus stuff but we’re having fun learning.

DSC_0013 DSC_0002

CACTUS FROM JACKIE’S PLACE THIS MORNING…GOLDEN BARREL & POTTED PRICKLY PEAR

I have probably planted close to 50 or 60 Cacti sprigs this last while so it will be interesting next fall when we return, to see how many, if any, survived the hot Arizona summer.  Marge gave us bunch of ‘Bird Of Paradise’ seeds as well & I will plant them too.  Not too optimistic about their survival because they need water & we won’t be here for 5 months.  Thought of putting in a water drip line but Kelly doesn’t like the idea of leaving the water on when we are not here.  We have to pay for every drop of water we use & if a leak developed in the line somewhere while we were gone, our next Arizona water bill could wipe us out:((

DSC_0006

Kelly was off to Wickenburg again this morning looking for whatever it is that Gal’s look for.  I think we should have bought a place in Wickenburg.  Either that or Wickenburg should seriously consider moving it’s whole town here to Congress.  A lot less driving for Kelly.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE I AM THIS CUTE LITTLE FELLOW’S HALF UNCLE??   YEP…..IT’S TRUE:))  THAT’S MY HALF BROTHER DAVE, WIFE NATALIE & THEIR SON, PARKER BOSSENCE

DONNA commented on a photo in my post Tuesday showing the ‘Have Gun Will Travel’ VCR jacket beside our Boombox.  Yes, it was Richard Boone who once played the character of Paladin.  Below are a couple photos.  The one on left shows Richard Boone standing in right foreground & Randolph Scott sitting by a campfire.   Scene is from ‘The Tall T’.  Photo on right is my photo of where I think the same spot that movie location photo was taken.  My white Cowboy hat on the ground is about where I figure Randolph Scott was sitting beside the campfire.  Location is the Alabama Hills west of Lone Pine California & you can read my post about the day I took that photo…. IN SEARCH OF RANDOLPH SCOTT'S CAMPFIRE.

Fired up the rig a couple days ago & let it run for a bit.  While sitting there I turned on the radio & hit the seek button.  Found 7 FM stations……all in Spanish!!!!  Not one  single English speaking radio station did I find.  Not one!!  Why is that??  We are 75 miles north of Phoenix Arizona & all’s we can get is Mexican stations.  Something not right here & it’s not the first time we have noticed this in southern parts of the south-west.  Thank heavens we have Sirius Satellite Radio.

PHEEBS WORKED TOO HARD TODAY…SHE’S CRASHED OUT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PORCH

Now that our winter RV lifestyle has changed a bit, we are looking down the road a tad & asking ourselves some travel questions. Last March we began thinking of a cheaper mode of transportation between Bayfield Ontario & Congress Arizona. Thought of a few alternatives but weren’t sure at the time because it was too early & we hadn’t even spent a night in the house yet. We have been here over a month now & it looks like we are here to stay for a few winters to come.

DSC_7397

SAW THIS SIGN ON OUR MORNING WALK

Eight months ago we were thinking along the lines of selling or trading the Motorhome in on a small trailer or something we could pull with the Jeep. A bit of research soon made it clear we were not going to tow anything much larger than a utility trailer with a Jeep Wrangler. We like our Motorhome a lot, it runs great & has served us well. It is also nearly 10 years old. If we are not going to be boondocking for 5 or 6 months at a time, do we really need a 33 foot Motorhome? How about a smaller Class C or a Class B? What about a truck camper? If I was traveling alone I would consider all those but there are 3 of us so I don’t think we would be comfortable with anything smaller than a C. But, it’s all just a thought so far.

CORNER POSTS FOR THE DECORATIVE FENCE…THE LIGHT WOOD WILL TURN MUCH DARKER WHEN WEATHERED

We ask ourselves, is a small Jeep Wrangler the best vehicle for us now here in the southwest…& our answer is, ‘not really’. Would it be more practical to bring our Santa Fe next year instead of the Jeep? Yes it would. Way more room in the Santa Fe, comes complete with a full back seat & large hatchback cargo area. Nicer for the Pheebs. My heart loves the little Jeep to bits but my head says, ‘whoa there, not practical’. Our Santa Fe still has it’s tow plate on so we could easily hook it up & bring it along behind our rig. Maybe sell both the Jeep & Santa Fe & pick up another Mini-Van, which to me is the most practical multi purpose vehicle on the road. Not so good for towing though. Maybe do the trips between Ontario & Arizona with the mini-van. Maybe not. I think we better keep the Jeep.  Lots to think about this winter. Lots of things to consider. Not a lot of time for boredom. I like that:))

OUR BEADED DOOR BACKGROUNDED WITH AN OUT OF FOCUS ARIZONA SUNSET

GROANER’S CORNER:(( There were these two guys out hiking when they came upon an old, abandoned mine shaft. Curious about its depth they threw in a pebble and waited for the sound of it striking the bottom, but they heard nothing. They went and got a bigger rock, threw it in and waited. Still nothing. They searched the area for something larger and came upon a railroad tie. With great difficulty , the two men carried it to the opening and threw it in. While waiting for it to hit bottom, a goat suddenly darted between them and leapt into the hole!
The guys were still standing there with astonished looks upon their faces from the actions of the goat when a man walked up to them. He asked them if they had seen a goat anywhere in the area and they said that one had just jumped into the mine shaft in front of them! The man replied, 'Oh no. That couldn't be my goat, mine was tied to a railroad tie.'

OUR GHOST TOWN ROAD HOUSE FINALLY HAS IT’S MUSICAL HEART:))

DSC_0039

OUR HOME SECURITY SYSTEM…PHEEBS & SPENCER

Couldn’t help but notice it was warmer in Bayfield Ontario this morning than it was here in Congress Arizona.  But, no matter….wouldn’t trade places for 1 milli-second.  I know what it looks like there with all the leaves off the trees & shrubs, gray days, & damp.  And, I know winter is right round the corner waiting to pounce.  Nope, give me the sunshine, the warm days, the mountains, valleys, canyons, forests, clear starry nights, & rolling deserts any day.  Well, maybe not the hot desert areas in the summer time.  Oh, & today’s temperatures here on sunny Ghost Town Road today…..77:))

BUTTERFLIES IN OUR SALVIA & ROSEMARY TODAY

Kelly  & I  headed off over to the Cactus Lady’s house this morning.  First time I had been there & the first time I met Marge & Phil.  Really nice folks with a really nice place.  There is greenery everywhere including a small greenhouse.  It is very apparent this is a labor of love for Marge as she & hubby Phil showed us around explaining all the various Cacti & other plants.  Probably isn’t very much she doesn’t know about southwest gardening & everything that grows there.  She gave us a bunch of cuttings so as soon as we arrived back home, I was busy with my gloves & shovel.  I am a very lucky fellow to have things to do that I enjoy doing.  As I have said before, give me a shovel, a pile of dirt & something to do & I am a happy guy.

FIGHTER JETS?  NOPE, JUST UNCLE EBENEZER & AUNT MATILDA ON A COMMERCIAL FLIGHT FROM LA TO JFK

Sooooo nice to finally have continuous music in the house.  Up to now we’ve just had a small radio with annoying local commercial radio stations or the TV with it’s tin can sound.  Kelly found a Sirius Satellite Radio Boom Box on Ebay last week & after successfully bidding on it the Boom Box arrived via UPS Monday.  She got a great deal.  We weren’t long in plugging our Sirius Satellite radio in to the Boomer & filling the house from wall to wall, floor to ceiling, with relaxing ambient music.  Channel 068 – ‘The Spa’.  Our house now has it’s heart & my days are now complete.  Oh how melodically sweet it is………..:))

THIS IS A GOOD BOOMER, GREAT SOUND QUALITY COMPLETE WITH A SUB WOOFER WHICH IS A MUST FOR ME…FOUND THAT EMPTY ‘HAVE GUN’ VCR TAPE JACKET IN AN OLD ABANDONED & TRASHED CABIN NEAR DESERT CENTER CALIFORNIA LAST FEBRUARY

Always thought Wikieup was a neat sounding word.  It is an Indian phrase meaning, “conical house formed from cedar boughs using a single slope form.”  There is also a small dusty little western town in Arizona called WIKIEUP.  Think we’ll slide the Jeep out one morning this week & go have us a look at this old historical place with a rather neat-o sounding name.  Wikieup, sounds like giddyup.  Yeserieeee, we are in the wild, wild, west alright……  Wikieup, just kinda rolls off your tongue eh:))

DSC_0003

The ongoing various stages of aging is a somewhat complicated thing at times.  There is no precise ending of one stage & beginning of another.  No line in the sand, no sudden change.  The stages just simply meld together so one seldom knows if one has grown out of one phase & into the next phase or not.  This is quite often made apparent to me when it comes to appetite.

DSC_7349

Mornings seem to be my big feed bag time.  The young boy inside let’s me know he is hungry.  The teenager inside let’s me know he is ravenously hungry big time & it is this super charged teenage appetite which demands the volume of food to be consumed.  And, this is where I get myself into trouble.

DSC_0002

WE ARE AS SNUG AS 3 BUGS IN A RUG HERE

Saturday morning in Wickenburg, I got a big hungry going on so we stopped at the Country Kitchen.  My inner teenager seized the menu & ordered something with a lot of volume to it.  My middle age self knew better but went along with the idea anyway, leaving my current Senior self to try & eat absolutely everything the teen had ordered.  Seeing's how my younger self was born in the mid 40’s, I am the product of that old ‘clean up your plate or else” generation!!  So, you can see my dilemma with this aging thing.  No way can my Senior tummy hold the volume of food my teen-age self thinks it needs.  And with my young boys tummy trained to clean up my plate……well, no wonder I had a couple down days feeling like I had swallowed a cannonball.  No, this aging process is not a simple thing at all & next time out I will probably turn right around & make the same old mistake all over again.  No matter the age, I still fall victim to yummy in the tummy……teenage style:((

WE LUCKILY TAPPED INTO A CACTUS SOURCE

DSC_0019

I LIKE TO STAND IN OUR LITTLE CACTUS GARDEN AT NIGHT GAZING AT THE STARS

Stood for awhile Sunday night in our little Cactus garden watching a yellowed early December Moon slowly making it’s way up over the brim of Arizona’s Weaver Mountains.  The Moon’s soft glow lit the underside of a few wispy clouds giving them a surreal look. With twinkling stars as a back drop, the scene was right out of a fantasy movie. Only sounds were near & distant Coyotes. What a nice way to wind down another sunny southwestern day.

Managed to get myself back on track this morning so we’re off & flying for another week.  Every once & awhile my old arch enemy, depression, catches up & knocks the stuffing's out of me for a couple days.  I had actually written about depression this morning & intended it for today’s post, but decided at the last minute to hold off posting it until a another time.

Elfrida John had sent an email saying wife Jackie would be at their Congress home for a week & to come on over & dig up some small Agave plants anytime.  We did that this morning so was able to get 8 Agave plants in the ground today.  Our gardens are slowly beginning to take shape.

We had the thunder of jet engines in the sky this morning & I was able to scramble my 7 x 50 binoculars & ID the two planes as F-16 Fighting Falcons.  Watched one jet eject a total of 12 inline flares while pulling a high speed right turn.  Neat-O.  Now, to get some telephoto shots showing all that…..next time.

DSC_0026

We have had a total of 3 people look at installing our new screen door at the back of the house.  All three had varying ways to do it with one guy even saying some of our stucco would have to be removed around the frame.  All came in with quotes around $200 to do the job.  We didn’t go for it.  Heard of a handy fella over at the Escapee’s North Ranch & Kelly gave him a call.  Ted stopped by this morning & suggested we take our latest heavy duty screen door back to the hardware store where we got it & he would simply make us a new door.  We knew Ted was a reputable guy so it was a done deal.  Kelly headed off for Wickenburg with our second screen door return.  Ted has 3 door customers ahead of us so it may be a week or two.  That’s Ok because Ted’s price to make a ‘finished’ screen door is a third of the cost we would have ended up paying the other guys + the hardware door itself.  We cut the cost by at least two thirds.  Bonus:))

PHEEBS JUST LOVES DIGGING A HOLE & LAYING IN THE DESERT DIRT

We have decided to build a decorative wood fence close in to the front of the house & set off a couple of our Cactus gardens.  I figure this is something I can do myself.  We may just do part of the fence this year & finish it up next year.  Below is a picture of a neighbor’s fence & this is exactly how we will do ours.

DSC_0011

On her way back from Wickenburg, Kelly stopped in at the ladies place where she picked up those 6 Cacti last March.  Lady remembered Kelly, has a greenhouse full of Cactus & happily loaded Kelly down with……more Cactus.  She has another bunch for us to pick up tomorrow & is happy as punch we are putting together some Cactus gardens.  And, the cactus is free:))  Sometimes I just can’t believe our luck.  Looks like I will be up to my elbows planting prickers & stickers again tomorrow:))

LOOKING BACK ON 6 DECEMBER 1RSTS

DSC_7346

BIRD’S ON A WIRE

I am missing the Moon.  When Pheebs & I slipped outside last night I had to quickly step back inside & grab a flashlight.  Somebody had turned off the Moon.  With our surroundings bathed in moonlight this past week or so it was easy to see & keep track of the Pheebs.   But, not so much now with no Moon.  The up side of no Moon is dark skies & millions of sparkling diamonds overhead once again:))

JEAN & SKIP’S ROSEMARY PLANT, A VALENTINE PLANT & A SALVIA ON THE RIGHT

We had heard of a garden center on the south end of Wickenburg. That was our destination this morning. Nice place with lots of desert plants, but I was discouraged at the prices of everything.  Our hometown in Bayfield Ontario is a very popular tourist place. Same thing in Wickenburg. Because of that tourist label & Wickenburg’s old west lure, prices can be high.  Some days, $1.49 seems expensive to me. Today was one of those days.  We left empty handed.  We’ll just have to get out & hit more Saturday morning garage sales looking for prickly green stuff I guess.

NOT FAR FROM OUR HOUSE ARE THESE TWO BIG WATER TANKS & THIS IS WHERE THE WATER FOR MY DAILY MORNING SHOWER COMES FROM…GOTTA LOVE A STICKS & BRICKS LOOOONG HOT SHOWER:))

It was one month ago today we arrived in Congress & I’m happy to say my big property clean-up job is about 95% complete.  Just a little raking & wheel barrowing left & that’s it for now.  We pretty well have everything we need for the house but not everything we want of course.  Sound familiar??

And lastly, 6 years ago today I haven’t a clue as to what we were doing except to say we were at home in cold & snowy Bayfield Ontario anxiously waiting with our truck & fifth wheel to get ourselves on the road for our first Snow Birding season.  We left December 15th & spent our first Christmas on the road in Columbus New Mexico…..sitting on Santa’s knee.

I wasn’t on Blogger until the fall of 07 so my posts from 06 to 07 on ‘My Space’ are not publicly available.

LEAVING BAYFIELD IN DECEMBER 06

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A city man was forced to take a day off from work to appear for a minor traffic summons. He grew increasingly restless as he waited hour after endless hour for his case to be heard. When his name was called late in the afternoon, he stood before the judge only to hear that court would be adjourned for the next day and he would have to return. "What for?" he snapped at the judge.
His Honor, equally irked by a tedious day and the sharp query, roared, "Twenty dollars contempt of court. That's what for!" Then, noticing the man checking his wallet, the judge said, "It's all right. You don't have to pay now."
The young man replied, "I'm just seeing if I have enough for two more words!"
