ANOTHER GREAT JOSTLING JEEP RIDE THROUGH THE DESERT MOUNTAINS

DSC_0132

A Sunday morning gray overcast sky saw the Bayfield Bunch creeping across the desert floor.  Had to keep our eyes on the dark moody looking clouds.  Didn’t want to get ourselves caught out there in a rain.

DSC_0001

This mornings Jeep mission was to find a desert road leading through a canyon in the mountains west of our place.  From experience, we knew there had to be a way through there because desert roads & trails lead everywhere.  Our first attempt, through a gate off highway 71, led us on a willy nilly winding trail that finally dead ended us a few miles west at highway 93.  Backtracked to 71 & headed in closer to Congress & slipped back out into the desert through another gate.  This time with much better success.

THESE ‘DESERT BROOMS’ LEFT SOME NICE PIN STRIPING ON THE JEEP

Winding our way through the cactus we knew we had been on that particular trail before.  We’re getting to be quite familiar with the terrain in that area.  Easy to get lost because of all the roads & trails & yet it’s not easy to get lost as long as you pay attention to all the surrounding mountains.  Mountains tops, all different, make excellent reference points no matter how turned around one gets.  If someone went out there on a foggy day they would simply get lost forever.

YEP, I THINK IT’S A TYRANNOSAURUS REX DINOSAUR SKULL ALRIGHT

Made our way northwest in the direction of ‘House Rock’ again, only this time we were looking for a rough looking sandy road just south of House Rock we had spotted last week.  We knew the road headed in the direction of the canyon pass we were looking for & sure enough, we found the road.

STOPPED ALONG THE WAY FOR A LITTLE ROCK SCRAMBLE

And, here again is one of the main reasons we like the southwest so much.  Soon as we clambered onto that canyon pass road we began gaining altitude & even a slight change in altitude here in the southwest means a change in landscape, flora & fauna.  Within minutes we noticed the changes occurring around us as we drove into yet again a different world.  Rock colors changed, Teddy Bear Chollas appeared & we were in the land of tall Saguaros again.  The rough road bent & twisted it’s way through gulley's, rock cuts, & scenic rocky ridges.  Not a land for two wheel drive low slung cars, but a land for little Jeep Wranglers for sure:))

TEDDY BEAR CHOLLAS ON THE RIGHT ARE ABOUT THE VERY MUCH MOST BADDEST CACTUS ONE CAN TANGLE WITH…VERY, VERY, PAINFUL BARBS & I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE

We both felt the excitement (Pheebs too) of seeing something totally new again as we made our way into a beautifully serene Sonoran valley with views stretching easily away for 30 miles or more.  Distant mountains on distant horizons stirred the imagination.  Our morning cloud cover had lifted & sunlight bathed the greening desert landscape in warm colors.  And then Kelly spotted something man made.

SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO OPEN A FEW COWBOY GATES ALONG THE WAY

In the valley distance amidst a sea of desert greenery the sun glinted on something shiny.   It was the small tell tale sign of a windmill & that windmill became our new destination.  Soon, the road came to a fork where it branched left & right.  Right would take us in the direction of the windmill so that was where we headed.  Next time back in this valley we will take the fork to the left.  Our neighbor Bud has told us of a lost town he once came upon out here.  I don’t know if Bud was smoking something funny at the time but it’s hard to imagine an old town out in this valley anywhere.  But then again, not too much surprises us anymore about what can be found out here in this still wild & almost untouched land.  We will be back to look for that town for sure, whether it’s there or not.  Bud even said it has streets.  Shades of the Lost Dutchman Mine here methinks.

GOT ANOTHER ONE FOR YA MIKE:))

We could hear the working of the whirring windmill as soon as we stepped out of the Jeep.  The canyon’s stiff breeze had us watching the blades whizzing around.  With it’s tail guide it swung back & forth scooping every bit of air it could from the gusting winds.  It’s fast paced whirring had a slightly ear catching metallic sound as the blades sliced through the crisp air.  No cattle around & the water trough was filled with clear cold spring water.  Careful where you step, the cows must have just left.  Pheebe loves cows & ran around frantically trying to find where they had gone.

What a splendid day it had turned out to be & it was just the magic elixir I needed to pull me out of the doldrums these past few days. (one of the possible reasons for those doldrums is in my last paragraph)DSC_0101

WELL OK, JUST ONE…………….

Walking, hiking, jeeping, bicycling,  ATVing, horseback riding or whatever way one can get themselves into these kinds of places just has to be the best of ever for sure.  The beauty one surrounds themselves with just never stops.  With every turn of the steering wheel, with every hiking step or hoof beat, there is something new to see.  Something new to feel, & something new to hear even if it is just the riveting silence of the canyon winds.  Took 152 photos today….can you tell I’m feeling better about things:))  We were home around 1 o’clock & spent the afternoon doing laundry.  Now, how’s that for an afternoon come down to a great morning eh.  But it’s okay, I don’t mind doing laundry:))

HEADING HOME AFTER ANOTHER GREAT 5 HOUR JOSTLING JEEP RIDE

With so many miles traveled & so many of those miles traveled on high speed Interstates, tires are probably one of the biggest worries for RV’ers. Reading Ivan’s post this morning, GETTING 'TIRED' OF THIS I was reminded of that. Luckily, we’ve never had a flat on an RV but we’ve had two flats on our Jeep. Same tire twice, a year apart, but both within just a few miles of each other. FLAT TIRE 1 & FLAT TIRE 2.

WE ARE NEVER ALONE IN THE SONORAN DESERT

Brief update on my legs problem. First, thanks to readers thoughtfulness for offering to send me Tylenol. None of the pain meds I’ve tried have really helped, including 800mg Ibuprofen. If I don’t move my right leg I have no pain. The pain & stiffness is not constant nor is it always the same. Been sitting watching TV a fair bit the last few days & my legs are feeling a bit better & I am cautiously optimistic. Makes me once again suspect a torn ligament or muscle problem. I have not gone back on the Crestor Cholesterol drug & have no intentions of doing so. Also, after about 13 years, I finally dumped my ‘Arthrotec’ arthritis medication & will not be going back on that either. Also totally stopped another prescribed pill called Zopaclone which was an aid for sleeping. When I first started taking that last summer it was a big help to me but I reached a point where it wasn’t working anymore & I would have had to increase it to get the same affect. I have an addictive nature (alcohol & nicotine years ago) so no way was I going to get myself tangled up in that dependency route again. I just have to accept the fact a ‘good night’s sleep’ is a thing of the past & that’s the way it is. So, in a nutshell, I am totally free of any prescription drugs & feel much better about that. I will just deal with the leg & sleep problems day to day & that’s it. However, stopping meds cold turkey has it’s consequences such as bouts of depression being one of the temporary side effects.  Been experiencing that since stopping those prescriptions last week & it’s been a bit of a roller coaster.  However, I feel the ride leveling out & I’m hoping today was a turning point in getting myself back on track again……:))

I JUST NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS LANDSCAPE

GROANER’S CORNER:)) A young mother finds out she is pregnant again, and she tells the good news to anyone who will listen. One day when the woman and the boy are out shopping, a friend of the mother asks the little boy if he was excited about the new baby.
"Oh, yes!" the little tyke says. And having overheard some of his parents' private conversations, he adds, "And I know what we are going to name it, too. If it's a girl we're going to call it Mary, and if it's another boy we're going to call it Quits."

AWWWWW PHOOEY

Ever write a post & then just say, “Awwwww Phooey” & dump the whole thing.  Tonight’s topic seemed interesting enough to me, but by the time I reached the end it just didn’t hold my attention anymore.  So, ‘Poof’ it was gone.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll get some words put together & snag a few photos somewhere.  I have a feeling 2013 may very well turn out to be a bit of a blogging challenge…………………..

WE LOOKED, BUT WE DIDN’T FIND…..YET

DSC_0004

SOMEWHERE OUT HERE WE HOPE TO FIND INDIAN PETROGLYPHS

We took Kelly’s new ‘Netbook’ jeeping with us this morning.  On the screen we had an old black & white photo dating back to 1901.  Kelly spotted it in a library book & it’s the only clue we have so far in finding the elusive Indian Petroglyphs in the desert behind our place.  Photo shows 3 people & a large round rock with Petroglyphs on it.  We set out this morning to find the mountain configuration in the background of the photograph.

petro DSC_0010

LOOKING FOR MATCHING HORIZON LINES…KELLY IS IN THE PHOTO AT RIGHT

Made sense for us to head directly to where we knew for a fact an Indian Village once existed.  House Rock is where we saw the tell tale signs of ancient Indian life.  Grain grinding holes in the rocks called Morteros.  There are a few Petroglyphs there but we feel there are more somewhere according to what locals have told us.

DSC_0006

Parts of the background scenery in the photo looked familiar but we could line ourselves up with an exact match.  Not yet.  We did spend some time walking & climbing a section of rocks south of House Rock in hopes of spotting some Petroglyphs but no luck despite the type of rocks Petroglyphs are usually found on.  No matter, we had ourselves a nice walk on a beautiful desert morning anyway.  And Pheebs just has an absolute blast running around all over the place.

DSC_0005

From House Rock we spotted another set of craggy rocks about a mile to the northeast that looked promising.  From that vantage point I figure the mountain background just may line up with the photo background & our next Jeep trip out into the desert we’ll make our way towards that rock formation & see if we can find anything.  If you type either the word Mortero or Petroglyph into our search bar near the top of our right hand column you can find some of my posts regarding where we have found these things in our southwest travels over the past 6 years.

DSC_7718

OUR NEXT PETROGLYPH SEARCH MAY VERY WELL CENTER ON THAT ROCK FORMATION CENTER OF PHOTO

We wanted to be back home by mid morning just in case the roofer or screen door guy showed up.  Also expecting Fed-Ex to drop off a new battery for my Toshiba Satellite laptop.  Kelly had also ordered an area mat for our living room & sure enough, we no sooner arrived home than a driver was at our gate with the mat.

PHEEBS DOESN’T QUITE HAVE THE HANG OF LAYING ON THE NEW MAT YET

Need one more dump truck load of crushed red stone to complete our gravel project around the house & I’m hoping we can get that delivered next week.  I don’t like leaving projects half done.

DSC_0015

KELLY & PHEEBS TAKE DELIVERY OF THE NEW LIVING ROOM MAT

On a 4 day junket to Las Vegas in the mid 90’s, Kelly & I, in a rental car took a drive over to a section of Death Valley California.  Merikay & Craig from MERIKAY'S DREAM HAS TEN WHEELS has just visited the same area & I like the photos they took.

JUST ANOTHER NICE MORNING IN THE SONORAN DESERT

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A young Catholic priest decided to enter a monastery. He joined one particularly strict sect. The head monk told him, at his indoctrination, that they were sworn to TOTAL silence. They could not speak one word at all. However, every ten years, they would be permitted to speak two words. After 10 years of total silence, the head monk indicated it was now time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “Bed hard!” And then he resumed his silent study and work.Another 10 years passed and the head monk again indicated it was time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “Food bad!” And then he resumed his silent study and work.Another 10 years passed and the head monk again indicated it was time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “I quit!”The head monk shook his head and said, “I knew this was coming. You’ve done nothing but complain for the past 30 years!”

AND THAT WAS IT FOR TODAY

DSC_7711

Pheebs did fine on our walk this morning & I only saw her favor her left front leg once when she jumped down off a chair later in the afternoon.

Kelly brought a few more fence posts & rails back from Wickenburg Wednesday so this morning I busied myself completing another section of decorative fence.  And, that was it for our day.

PHEEBS SPRAINS AN ANKLE

DSC_7675

ANOTHER ARIZONA SUNRISE ON GHOST TOWN ROAD

We think Pheebs twisted an ankle on Tuesday’s walk around the old Congress town site.  Noticed she was limping badly on her left side front paw after we arrived home.  Her paw itself looked & felt fine & we couldn’t see any leg swelling.  No cuts or stickers.  She wasn’t in any kind of stress other than she couldn’t walk on that leg without a limp.  We purposely did not do a walk this morning & it paid off.  By this afternoon she was doing better & we figure it is/was probably just a sprain.

OUR 24/7 HAPPY LITTLE DESERT DOG:))

We are fortunate to live in a quiet neighborhood here in Congress Arizona.  No revelers on New Years Eve.  No noisy fireworks, no gun fire, loud music or loud people.  Not so for RETIRED ROD, Loyce & poor little Biscuit over there in that Mesa place southeast of Phoenix Arizona:((

Looks like THE GOOD LUCK DUCK Gals are having a good time in the Tucson area.  I always like to see folks out & about in the desert appreciating the beauty that is there.  I’ve never understood people pooh-poohing the desert calling it desolate & barren.  Those people obviously have never taken the time to get their feet on the ground & open their eyes & mind to their surroundings.  I’m talking about the Sonoran desert of course which can be found stretching up from the Mexican border through Tucson & Phoenix right up through our area in Congress.  If you think desert & green at the same time, your thinking of the Sonoran desert:))

A FEW OF OUR FRONT YARD BIRDS

To date I have written over 1,700 posts & out of all those, this one written in August of 2011 has turned out to be the most popular…'OH OH' THERE'S SOME NUDE GUYS IN THIS POST’. Number 2 is my 'BEST BUDDY' post in June of 2012 sadly followed by number 3 which was, 'TODAY WE LOST ANOTHER BELOVED MEMBER OF THE BAYFIELD BUNCH' in April of 2011.

KELLY PICKED THIS MUG UP AT THE THRIFT STORE TODAY…CUP BOTTOM SAID ‘MADE IN PORT TOWNSEND WASHINGTON’ BY THE ‘WILD WOMEN’ GROUP:))

Music has always been an instant time machine to the past for me & is just one of the many reasons I enjoy music so much.  I was reminded of that this morning when I stepped out of the shower to the sounds of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’.  Took me right back to Toronto’s CNE Stadium in the mid 90’s when Kelly & I attended a live Pink Floyd concert. Great night.  Groovy:))

Jim, in our Shout Box asked about where we had our new RV toilet installed in December 2011 & were we happy with it.  This toilet installation turned into a bit of a fiasco for us but where we had it done & what I thought about it is better explained by my 2 posts at the time…..'OH NO', AL MAKES A BIG TOILET DECISION MISTAKE & WE HAVE BEEN DE-THRONED.

FOR OBVIOUS REASONS, I AM THINKING TWICE ABOUT PAINTING THE BACK WALL OF THE SHED

I waited for the morning sun to warm up our aluminum garden shed before applying my paint brush & roller to it.  Nice to be outside feeling the warmth of the sun again.

NICE DAY TO BE OUTSIDE:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A man died and went to The Judgment, they told him , “Before you meet with God, I should tell you — we’ve looked over your life, and to be honest you really didn’t do anything particularly good or bad. We’re not really sure what to do with you. Can you tell us anything you did that can help us make a decision?”

The newly arrived soul thought for a moment and replied, “Yeah, once I was driving along and came upon a person who was being harassed by a group of thugs. So I pulled over, got out a bat, and went up to the leader of the thugs. He was a big, muscular guy with a ring pierced through his lip. Well, I tore the ring out of his lip, and told him he and his gang had better stop bothering this guy or they would have to deal with me!”

“Wow that’s impressive, “When did this happen?”

“About three minutes ago,” came the reply.
