KIND OF A SCRATCH & SHUFFLE DAY

DSC_0022

ORGAN PIPE CACTI IN THE DARBY WELL ROAD AREA WEST OF AJO ARIZONA

Not a lot happening. Turned out to be one of those slow puttering days. A little scratching around in the back yard & some shuffling about in the Winnie Wagon. Kelly put a few hours in at Deer Park & Pheebs did some playing with her toys. Never even managed to haul the cameras out for a photo or two. Just one of those quiet relaxing Saturdays.  Friend & neighbor in the Park, Bruce dropped over with a 7/8ths wrench & took the plug out of Winnie’s hot water tank to release all the sulphur smelling water.  I later flushed the tank with clean water & have left the plug out for the tank to air.  I will flush it a few more times on Sunday.  That was about it for any major excitement today except just before hitting the ‘Publish’ button tonight I noticed we had a new Blog Follower.  Welcome aboard to HOHcat.  Thanks for dropping in on the Bayfield Bunch:))

UPON REACHING CONGRESS ARIZONA THIS FALL OUR FIRST SIDE TRIP WILL BE TO ‘SLAB CITY’ CALIFORNIA

DIDN’T SEE THE LITTLE FROG FELLOW BETWEEN THESE WATER LILIES UNTIL I HAD THE PHOTO IN PICASA…LOOKS LIKE HE IS CONCENTRATING ON DISGUISING HIMSELF AS A FROG LILY

Ever since beginning our Snow Bird travels back in the fall of 2006 we have always traveled with a CB Radio. Never have had occasion to talk on it but we do monitor it quite a bit while traveling the Interstates. Has helped us out several times knowing about slow downs ahead. When we sold the Damon I took the CB radio out & kept it figuring on putting it in our next RV. Well, not a lot a room in the Ford Cab & I didn't like the idea of punching holes in the dash to hook it up plus another hole in the coach to mount an aerial. And then there's the cost of having someone install it. No way do I have the patience, interest, or knowledge to try running electrical wires around under the dash etc. Picked up a Cobra HH 38 WX ST C at Canadian Tire this morning. It's portable & plugs into the cigarette lighter. Also runs on battery power. Has weather channels etc. Not a device that is necessarily used a lot but it’s handy when you need it.

SPOTTED THIS NICE LOOKING CAR IN THE CANADIAN TIRE PARKING LOT

Of course in order to pick up that CB it meant Pheebs & I had to Jeep ourselves to Goderich.  Not wanting to come straight home of course we picked up a Sub to go & headed out to dust up a few country roads.  Not a long drive again but we did manage a stop at our favorite frog pond.  Pheebs recognizes this spot now because the last two times I came around a corner & headed down into a gully between the 2 large ponds Pheebs goes bonkers racing around inside the Jeep crying to get out.  Likes to see all her little Froggy Pals.

NOT MANY OF THESE OLD WOODEN BARN SILOS LEFT IN THE COUNTRYSIDE ANYMORE…NORTH OF BEN MILLER

I don’t know how August 9th blew by me without remembering it was 2 years ago on that date we met our wonderful Pheebs. For Kelly & I it was our lucky day. And I’m sure Pheebs would agree it was her lucky day as well. It was a meeting that brought us, & still brings us, great joy every single day. What an amazing stroke of good fortune that we found such a heart warming & lovable little dog. You can read my post from a year ago about the day we met the Pheebs in August of 2011. Water Striders is the correct name for those little water walking critters I had a photo of in Thursday night's post. I had called them Water Spiders. Seems I got my Striders & Spiders mixed up. Not something one wants to be doing after age 65. Thanks to Chinle over at SPOTTED DOG RANCH for pointing that spider strider thing out.

A FEW TOUCHES OF VERY EARLY AUTUMN

I use a long 300mm lens for most of my bugs, birds, frogs, butterflies, flowers, & candid people pics etc.  Many times it is not until I get home & bring those photos up in my photo editing program that I see things in the photos I had not seen through the telephoto lens when taking the picture.  A recent frog picture was a good example of that & another photo this morning showed a frog on the right in full view that I did not see when taking the picture.  Kinda scary sometimes because I’m not always that far away.  In the photo below I was only about 3 feet away from the little frog at the upper left.  I was concentrating on getting that old tree trunk sticking out of the water in the frame & I never did see the frog with a piece of grass on it’s nose sitting to the right of the small wood stump.  Good thing it wasn’t a 10’ Alimagator!!

DSC_0008-001

I seem to recall someone asked a question about Sitemeter awhile ago.  Think the question was, ‘What is the difference between a visit and a page view’?  Good question & one I have difficulty understanding even after reading the explanation below from Sitemeter’s own site.  Sitemeter says……(‘When you are browsing a site, every time you follow a link to a new web page, it is treated as a single page view . Site Meter defines a visit as a series of page views by one person with no more than 30 minutes in between page views. If you click on a link to another site, and then come back to your site within 30 minutes, you are still on the same visit and Site Meter won't increment the counter. But Site Meter will increment the number of page views recorded for your current visit.’)  Now, if you can understand how that all works your doing better than me.  All’s I know is that on my Sitemeter Counter I have ‘Total Visits’ & ‘Total Page’ views, each with 2 different numbers.

We have pretty much scrapped our travel plans to Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula.  A month ago we were hoping to get away in the Winnie Wagon for a few days but with our recent bout of medical troubles & Doctor’s appointments we figured we had just better stay put until we are through with these things.  I don’t think Kelly is quite up to par just yet for boondocking anyway.  Also, the Winnie Wagon will be better equipped next summer for travel.  Not long after we reach Congress in the Fall we want to head over to Slab City California & have Solar Mike do us up a solar system for the rig.  That will once again give us back our independence to resume our favoured RV lifestyle .   For us it makes RVing more pleasurable if we are not dependent on RV Parks, time schedules, reservations, & all the stuff that goes along with that kind of RVing.  As many long time readers know, we much prefer the quiet of nature as opposed to the alternative.  As originally planned, we hope to use our Congress digs as a home base & branch out from there on shorter side trips around the South West this winter…………………………..

REFLECTION IN THE JEEP’S TOPPER WINDOW THIS MORNING

GROANER’S CORNER:))  A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says,
"Please come over here and help me.  I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."  Her neighbor asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"
The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."
Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle.  She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table.  He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says,
"First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster."   He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh ............
"Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

CLIMBING MY WAY OUT OF ANOTHER LONG DIFFICULT SUMMER

DSC_0001

A NICE RELAXING QUIET FOREST WALK THIS MORNING FOR PHEEBS & I

It's usually a Cardinal I first hear in the early pre-dawn darkness outside somewhere in a nearby cedar tree. Just a short little singing tweet & he's quiet again for a wee bit. Takes the little fellow awhile to get himself awake but soon he's tweeting in a new day as our eastern sky takes on a bit of light through the pines. All the while in the background a gentle chorus of Crickets. Crickets, one of my all time favorite nature sounds.

NOTICE THE FUZZY WUZZY WHITE CATERPILLAR BEHIND THE CARDINAL
Our live radar weather map showed no rain but thunder rolling in off the lake sure suggested we had some kind of disturbance headed our way. It was 72F this morning at 6 while a few days ago we were 47F at this time. We are in the process of changing seasons & it is one of the things I enjoy about our kind of weather here in the northern climates. Always look forward to the big weather swings as we go from Winter into Spring, Spring into Summer, & most of all my favorite time of year, Summer into Autumn.  Autumn being my all time favorite season of the year. September to about mid October is the time of year for me when Mother Nature sprinkles a little magic into the air. Just as Spring is such a relief after a long cold winter I find Autumn is also a welcome relief after another long hot summer.

OUR HEAD RV TECH CHECKS ONE OF WINNIE’S BINS THEN TURNS HER ATTENTION TO CLEANING HER BICYCLE
With dark clouds threatening warm showers I figured I'd make a project out of cleaning up & re-organizing the storage area in our carport. Things have a habit of getting moved & tossed around over the summer & it was clean up time. Kelly was off to the Dentist this morning so Pheebs stuck by my side helping whenever asked. About 10:30 I figured we needed a break so off to the Sub shop in Bayfield we went. A 6" Cold Cut Combo toasted on whole wheat with no sauce & no cheese did it for us again. It was a short distance to a scenic view point over looking placid Lake Huron. The rains never came. Savoured our beautiful morning by the lake while we shared our tasty Sub. A short country drive was in order with a stop for a walk on the BANNOCKBURN CONSERVATION boardwalk. Had the place to ourselves again as we sauntered along just enjoying the day. Pheebs even got her paws wet along a river bank. Heat & humidity were quickly building so we didn't stay too long & headed for home about noon. Nice to slip into a cool house for a relaxing short snooze in my recliner.

I will take our last two bird feeders down Friday, clean them up & put them away until next Spring.  I will continue putting bird seed out on our feeder station right up to the day we leave for the South West.  Lots of Black Capped Chickadees around & I think they stay for the winter.   Don’t think I have seen a Goldfinch all week.  Very surprised this summer by the absence of Monarch Butterflies.  This time of year there are usually lots of them but this year I have only seen one.  And whatever happened to the hordes of Cicada Bugs that were to descend upon mankind this summer.  I remember reading about a big infestation coming but that didn’t seem to materialize.

It has been my ramped up yard work projects, Jeep & Motorcycle washing, shed cleaning, RV tinkering, & a host of other small tasks that have told me I am beginning to finally climb out of my summer depression.  Cooler energizing weather has been a big factor as well.  Re-gaining interest in things is always a good sign just as losing interest in things is always a bad sign.  Classic depressive mood swing.  With Autumn coming on & the prospects of winter travel looming I am once again becoming invigorated & re-vitalized.  Travel plans & packing will ramp up soon.  My mind will once again be busy with things I enjoy.  We’ll be on the road with a purpose & dozens of destinations in mind.  Days will again take on meaning.  New scenery, new roads, new challenges, & a newly refreshed attitude.  Summers have been my downfall these past 3 or 4 years with this past summer being the toughest one of them all.  Is it any wonder my reader numbers drop in the summer & rise in the winter.  Heavens to Murgatroyds……………………10-4:))

ANYWAY, THOUGHT THE 2 ARTICLES WERE VERY INTERESTING……….

DSC_0007

Again, so nice to wake up with no achy breaky feelings in my legs. How great when all the body parts come together in working fashion & decide not to be a pain in the parts for a day. Need to work on strengthening my leg muscles now & for that I am going to try using my bicycle.

Did about half our morning trail & the rest of my morning was spent spent puttering about with some light yard work. Kelly & I both cleaned our bicycles as well. They were pretty dusty from not being used these past few years. Took them with us to the South West a couple times on the back of our previous Damon Motorhome. I did like riding my bike in the desert at Why Arizona's Hickiwan Trails RV Park but overall we just didn’t use them enough to justify hauling them all the way down there & back every time we went. Didn't take long for today's heat & humidity to build so spent the remainder of my day inside.  Pheebs did manage to get out with Kelly for a ride when they picked up some farm fresh eggs at the Mennonite store just south of Bayfield. Kelly said she even got to meet the chickens.

HAD I KNOWN THIS MALE CARDINAL WAS DROPPING IN FOR A BATH TODAY I WOULD HAVE HAD THE WATER TOPPED UP

I obviously mis-read the on-line Farmer's Almanac about our full Moonrise time in this area Tuesday night. Pheebs & I were just about ready to head out when I happened to glance out our living room window & saw the Moon already up in the Pine trees. Had missed it by about an hour. Oh well, maybe next month.

AHHHHH, THAT FEELS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD:))

Now here’s an article I & other folks like myself will find very interesting.  23 SIGNS YOU ARE SECRETLY AN INTROVERT.  Well, it’s no secret on my blog what I am that’s for sure.  I identified strongly with all 23 signs, the exceptions being 6 & 7 which were in a gray area for me.  Believe me it’s not easy being an introvert in a mainly extroverted society.  It’s another one of those shaky closet topics but I did pull this off the internet which I think sums things up amazingly well…………………. ‘Contrary to what most people think, an introvert is not simply a person who is shy. In fact, being shy has little to do with being an introvert! Shyness has an element of apprehension, nervousness and anxiety, and while an introvert may also be shy, introversion itself is not shyness. Basically, an introvert is a person who is energized by being alone and whose energy is drained by being around other people.
Introverts are more concerned with the inner world of the mind. They enjoy thinking, exploring their thoughts and feelings. They often avoid social situations because being around people drains their energy. This is true even if they have good social skills. After being with people for any length of time, such as at a party, they need time alone to "recharge."
When introverts want to be alone, it is not, by itself, a sign of depression. It means that they either need to regain their energy from being around people or that they simply want the time to be with their own thoughts. Being with people, even people they like and are comfortable with, can prevent them from their desire to be quietly introspective.
Being introspective, though, does not mean that an introvert never has conversations. However, those conversations are generally about ideas and concepts, not about what they consider the trivial matters of social small talk’.

When I turned the water pump on in the rig this afternoon there was a very strong sulphur smell to the water coming out of the tap which was drawing water from our fresh water tank.  Haven’t encountered that before.  I have a feeling it has something to do with the hot water heater but don’t know what.  I did not have the hot water tank turned on at the time & we do not have sulphur laden water here.

MANY UNDERSTOOD MY MONDAY NIGHT POST…….SOME DIDN’T

DSC_0002

Went to bed Monday night with a sore hip, achy legs, & a sore foot. Woke up Tuesday morning completely pain free. Hip was fine, no aching & stiffness in my legs, & no soreness in my left foot. It was as if I had been given a lower body transplant while I slept. There sometimes seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why things are the way they are but why would I wake up free of pain all of a sudden? Another one of life's little mysteries. Or, maybe not so mysterious at all.  Maybe some of those meds readers advised me to try are taking hold:))  Due to some pain returning to my right hip Monday afternoon I had already decided I would not be doing any more yard work for awhile.  Figured after 3 straight days at home Pheebs & I were needing a change of pace & a little fresh country air. Also needed a few things at Walmart so we were out the door & down the road before 9.

AND SOME DAYS WE JUST RUN OUT OF ROADS TO DRIVE ON

Readers will be happy to know we once again by-passed McD's & Tim Hortons. Grabbed ourselves a 6" sub & remembered to tell the lady, 'no cheese' this time. I have never been a cheese eater. Some Gatorade & water to wash it down & we were good to go. Knew we wouldn't be out for one of our longer 4 or 5 hour jaunts because we are into a short hot spell at the moment & already by 10 a.m. temperatures were ramping up. With higher temps come the hordes, swarms, & herds of bugs. Every stop we made we were overwhelmed by Gnats but we didn't let that stop us from a short hike in the Hullett Marsh. There are 2 old derelict iron road bridges in there & I knew we could walk to one of them in a short round trip half mile hike. Legs were feeling great so figured I had better take advantage of that & get some exercise. With my foot not giving me trouble either Pheebs & I set the Hullett Marsh in our sights as the last stop before heading home.

DSC_0030

THE OLD BRIDGE IS ALL BUT INVISIBLE NOW IN THE ENCROACHING FOREST

DSC_0012 DSC_0010

Country roads once criss-crossed this area with several iron bridges over small rivers. When the Hullett Marsh was created years ago these roads were closed forever & soon became overgrown & absorbed into the marshlands. Had been about 20+ years since I had hiked into one of those aging bridges.  Not much wrong with my long term memory & I remembered right where it was. Aside from the miserable Gnats & Mosquitos pestering us Pheebe & I had ourselves a nice hike into the bridge. A little further in from the road than I remembered but no matter. When my body tells me it wants to go for a walk, who am I to argue with it.

DSC_0013

We were home shortly after noon & spent the rest of our day in the coolness of the house. In other words, we had ourselves a relaxing afternoon.  Fortunately our hot spell will be out of the area by Thursday afternoon & we will once again return to refreshingly cooler bug free weather.  So nice to hear the Autumn crickets again.  Full Moon tonight so Pheebs & I just might hop into the Jeep & drive out in the country a short ways to a favorite high spot on a gravel road & just watch the Moon come up.

WASN’T LONG & IT HEADED ON DOWN THE RIVER AWAY FROM US

Noticed the majority of commenters on my Monday night's post understood what my 4 paragraph ‘aging’ topic was about & why. I did not feel I was 'focusing' on old age.  Simply expressing some thoughts on aging & how I perceive it to be affecting me personally. Aging is something we all deal with yet I have not seen many people writing about it. Obviously it's a touchy subject & one which people do not like to talk about.  Not always easy for me to convey my thoughts without coming across to some in a complaining, feeling sorry for oneself, naïve, or a 'oh poor me' vein. I expressed my thoughts as an observation of an aging transition having nothing to do with negative 'feeling sorry', 'naivety' or 'poor me' connotations. Reality is exactly what it is regardless of what kind of glossy spin some may choose to put on it. I basically always write my posts from a 'first person' perspective. If I write from a 'third person' perspective I am probably sliding into a style with thoughts & feelings from people who have written articles about this subject previously. I write from the 'first person' because that is the person I know best. Perhaps a definition of 'first & third' party points of view here.....-A first person point of view is the grammatical category of forms that designate a speaker or writer referring to himself or herself whereas a third person point of view means the author is describing the action that happened to someone else -- not the author himself. From time to time as I come across & personally encounter things regarding the normal & ever present aging factor & how I feel about it I will continue to express my random thoughts about it…………………….

GROANER'S CORNER:(( Did you know that thanks to the Internet you can get hopelessly in debt without ever leaving your house. And remember, if you need a shoulder to cry on you can always pull off to the side of the road. My idea of a Super Bowl is a toilet that cleans itself. And guys, the first testicular guard, 'the cup' was used in Hockey in 1874 & the first helmet was used in 1974. That means it only took 100 years for men to realize their brain is important too.
