COLD WEATHER KEPT US INSIDE CLOSE TO OUR HEATERS TODAY

DSC_0008

Two factors contributed to a warmer house this morning.  First was the addition of our propane Legacy Blue Flame heater to the mix & secondly was finally remembering to close the damper in our fireplace when not in use.  If that damper is left open the natural draft it creates sucks all our heat right up the chimney.  I remember we made that same forgetful mistake last year a few times & couldn’t figure out why our heaters were not keeping up with the cold.  Instead of waking up to a 50 degree house this morning we woke up to 60 degrees.  Wow, a veritable interior heat wave for sure.

WE SOMETIMES SLIP INTO A NEIGHBORS YARD & LET PHEEBS PLAY WITH THEIR SADLY NEGLECTED DOG DALLY

Three Coyotes crossed our path this morning.  First Coyotes we have seen this season.  No sign of any Javelina’s so far.  A few posts ago I made mention of a few old rocking chair pieces we saw in the desert.  This morning we picked those pieces up & carried them home.

DSC_0009 DSC_0010

Having already assembled 3 Ikea Poang chairs in the past one would think one would have a pretty darn good idea how they went together.  Not so.  My mind did not retain one shred of ‘know-how'.  It was start at instruction number 1 & proceed.  With a bit of grumbling, some inaudible mumbling, & help from Kelly the chair was finally assembled.  Only 1 small rubber washer left over.  Chalked that up to the chair manufacturer tossing in an extra washer knowing Al would probably loose one.  I didn’t:))

ALL FINISHED

Decided not to paint my new bathroom closet & just leave the wood look.  Les dropped off 4 shelves for the closet this morning.  Struggled with fitting those shelves for awhile which in turned caused the air in my bathroom to turn blue……  Les will be back in a couple weeks & I will help him install our 4 Pine front porch posts.

And to answer MERIKAY'S question, “Didn't you buy a little heater for the Winnie? Do you bring it into the house?  Yes, we did buy a small propane Buddy heater but it just has the small green gas bottle on it.  We are using our bigger propane Legacy heater in the house.  That is the one we used to have plumbed directly into the Damon.  We have the Legacy adapted to a 20 pound propane tank.  Works fine.

DOGGY ON MY LAP KEEPING ME WARM TODAY & THEY SAY IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR NOSE WARM YOU CAN KEEP THE REST OF YA WARM TOO

Our day remained mainly overcast & with a gusty wind blowing it pushed our already cold temperatures even lower.  I doubt whether we even made it out of the 40’s.  Spent the afternoon indoors close to the heaters.  Me in my recliner with a doggy on my lap & Kelly in her recliner with a book on her lap.  Not what I would call an exciting day by any means but at least we were inside out of the weather.  And when the weather forces one to stay inside it’s nice to have lots of space to stay inside of.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Some witty student answers…

- A college student in a philosophy class was taking his first examination.
On the paper there was a single line which simply said: "Is this a question?" - Discuss.
After a short time he wrote: "If that is a question, then this is an answer."

- Teacher: What is the axis of the earth?
Student: The axis of the earth is an imaginary line which passes from one pole to the other, and on which the earth revolves.  Teacher: Very good. Now, could you hang clothes on that line?
Student: Yes, Sir.
Teacher: Indeed, and what sort of clothes?
Student: Imaginary clothes, Sir.

- A high-school student came home from school seeming rather depressed.
"What's the matter, son," asked his mother.
"Aw, gee," said the boy, "It's my marks. They're all wet."
"What do you mean `all wet?'"
"I mean," he replied, "below C-level."

‘BRRRRRRRRRR’ IN YAVAPAI COUNTY ARIZONA!!

DSC_0004

BUILT MYSELF A LITTLE WOOD FIRE THIS AFTERNOON

I know a lot of folks have it much colder with far worse conditions than we do here in Congress Arizona but even our milder cold still spells cold for me.  Tried out my new sleeping bag last night & it worked just fine.  Lots of room inside for my nightly wanderings & it kept me warm as toast in my room’s 52 degrees.  Kelly’s room dropped to 48 degrees.

DSC_0001

<<< YEP, IT’S COLD ALRIGHT

Switched to warmer fleece lined track pants for the day instead of the usual cold denim material found in blue jeans.  I remember the locals telling us about last year’s winter being the coldest they have had in quite a few years.  Am hoping this winter is not going to be a repeat performance.  Saw a group of Sparrows this morning clustered around a Gila Woodpecker trying to convince him to chop a hole through the ice in the birdbath.  In fact it was cold enough in the house last night Kelly didn’t even have to put the Turkey in the fridge.  So cold in my bathroom first thing this morning the water to the toilet stiffened up to a point where it wouldn’t run.  Kelly’s liquid honey was too thick to spread on her toast.  When the steaming hot water from my shower hit the icy cold air of my bathroom I had a pea souper of fog going on.  That was the grooviest part of my day:))

Jeep has been starting every time without a problem so we have been dragging our feet on the ‘new clutch switch’.  Seems it was a loose wire like Jim had figured.  If it were not to start again I have a pretty good idea which wires to wiggle, but……………

DSC_8079

Kelly headed off for Wickenburg this morning to have a look at the results of her liver enzyme blood test a few days ago.  When she arrived home this afternoon she said the test looked reasonably good.  Three of the 8 or 9 markers had higher than acceptable levels but she wasn’t too concerned.  A copy of the test has been faxed to both her Bayfield Doctor & her Specialist in Stratford Ontario.

DSC_8114

Planted my Agave ‘Pups’ around the property this morning.  Turns out I had 19 of them.  I think they are just an absolutely beautiful Cactus but with their dagger like needle point tips one has to be very careful around them.  Puttered about in the Cactus gardens a bit  more before the overall cold & brisk wind drove me back inside the house.

DSC_8095

Fed-Ex truck rolled in today & it looks like I have another Ikea Poang chair to assemble.  This will be my 4th one.  First two rode with us in the Damon for about 5 years.  One went with the Damon when it was sold, one is in our Bayfield sunroom, I’m sitting in the third one right now typing this, & the new 4th one will sit on our porch here & act as a 4th sitting chair in the living room when needed.  I will tackle that chair assembly in the morning……if I don’t wake up on the cranky side of my bed that is.

DSC_0007

HOPE TO ASSEMBLE THAT RED IKEA CHAIR IN THE MORNING…FED-EX ALSO BROUGHT A NEW WARMER COMFORTER FOR KELLY’S BED

Whenever it warms up I have a couple paint projects lined up.  A small upper section on our garden shed needs painting & I have my bathroom closet to do.  Just waiting on a few shelves first before starting the closet project.

THANKS AGAIN ROSE:))

Gathered myself up a couple handfuls of wood this afternoon & fired up our fireplace.  Had a nice fire going for about an hour.  The fireplace isn’t really heat efficient but at least it does throw some heat.  Debating now whether to get a load of firewood or not.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
-Border Collie: Just one. Then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
-Rottweiler: Make me!
-Lab: Oh, me, me! Pleeease let me change the light bulb! Can I? Huh? Huh?
-Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
-Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.
-Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls.
-Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
-Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
-Mastiff: Screw it yourself! I'm not afraid of the dark...
-Doberman: While it's out, I'll just take a nap on the couch.
-Boxer: Who needs light? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
-Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there!
-Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb?
-Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
-Old English Sheep dog: Light bulb? That thing I just ate was a light bulb?
-Basset Hound: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
-Westie: Dogs do not change light bulbs -- people change light bulbs. I am not one of THEM so the question is, how long before I can expect my light again?
-Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
-Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned-out bulb?

SUN IS WARM & OUR AIR IS COLD…TIS THE WAY OF THE DESERT I AM TOLD

IMG_1114

NO I’M NOT DIGGING OUT JOHN & JACKIE’S BIG AGAVE PLANT, ONLY THE DOZEN OR SO SMALL OFF-SHOOT PLANTS AROUND IT

Neither Kelly or I function well in cold weather anymore.  I think these last bunch of years surrounded by a warmer climate have really spoiled us.  Not a substantially warmer winter climate we are in but for sure a lot warmer than our Canadian winter climate for the most part.  Woke up to 32F this morning & when I checked Bayfield Ontario’s weather I see it was 54F.  Something very wrong with this picture.  There is one advantage to colder northern weather though & especially for folks who are not outdoors people.  Houses are built with warm insulation factors & windows are double paned.  But here’s the big difference between northern homes & southern homes, especially older Cowboy houses like ours.  Houses in the north have……FURNACES!!  Warm loving heat piped to each & every room.  Ohhhhh how I miss that cozy feeling………….

IMG_1107

ICE IN THE BIRDBATH WAS ABOUT THICK ENOUGH TO SKATE ON THIS MORNING

We held off our morning walk until the sun was well up off the horizon.  And as usual we started our walk all bundled up against the cold & finished our walk half an hour later all un-bundled & sweating.  Gotta love this crazy desert weather.

DSC_0014

<<< BUNDLED UP AGAINST THE MORNING’S COLD

Picked up 2 more utility trailer loads of dirt today & that completes my one front Cactus bed.  Going to keep bringing dirt back until the pile at Corky’s in North Ranch is depleted.  The pile of dirt put there before he bought the house caused an irrigation problem & that is why he wants to be rid of it all.  Also plans to park his Class A where the dirt pile is now & would like the dirt gone by the end of the month.  Figure another dozen or so dirt loads might do it & I’ll stock pile the dirt here.  Every home owner needs himself a good pile of dirt I figure.  Also stopped at Sarge’s today & dug up about a dozen small Agave plants he needed removed.  I will plant them all here at home in the morning.  John (Sarge) & Jackie weren’t home so they might not even notice the Agave plants missing:))

MIGHT JUST DARNED WELL TRY OUT MY NEW COLEMAN SLEEPING BAG TONIGHT

Anyone who has or has had a Class C RV with an over the cab bunk knows the difficulties that can go along with a bed in that location.  One of the biggies is trying to make the bed up there while standing on a short steel ladder.  Frustrating comes to mind & one of those things I do not have a lot of patience with.  I was reminded of those bed making difficulties while in Borrego Springs last week.  And twice I had the top comforter slip off the bed during the night & slip over the edge to the floor below.  Needed a solution for that problem & today UPS dropped off that solution.  Kelly ordered me up a brand spanking new Coleman sleeping bag & I like it.  And I like it because it is not made of slippery nylon, has a patented no stick zipper, lots of room inside, & is rated to 5 degrees below zero.  Like the color as well.  And best of all…..no more precariously balanced on a ladder trying to make a bed with sheets, blankets, & comforters.  Bonus.

IMG_1110

JUST SOAKING UP A FEW WARM RAYS TODAY

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Canadian/American or should that be American/Canadian………..

This is something deeper than spelling or pronunciation. It goes to the heart of the less-assertive Canadian character. The United States was born when Americans revolted against King George III and asserted their independence. Canada never came to a similar point of self-assertion and that little word "eh?" is their refusal even to assert that it's a hot day without inviting somebody else to verify it.
One definition of a Canadian is "a North American who refuses to join the revolution".
Another way to tell the difference between a Canadian and an American is to invite the suspected Canuck to lunch and watch him eat. If he's really upper crust, he'll eat like an Englishman, with knife and fork held firmly in his right and left hands. He'll cut with his knife, pack the results on the back of his fork and convey the food to his mouth with the fork still in this left hand.
Many an American eats with knife and fork, too, but in a different way. He takes the knife in his right hand and the fork in his left to cut up the food. Then he puts the knife down and takes the fork in the right hand to convey the food to his mouth.
A common garden-variety Canadian does the job differently. He doesn't use his knife at all, except for particularly stubborn steaks and other such tough foods. Instead he takes the fork in his right hand and leaves the knife beside his plate. Then he cuts the food with the edge of the fork and feeds himself with the fork held in the same hand.
But suppose all these tests are inconclusive. There's one more, rather dangerous, way to tell a Canadian from an American. Just remark to the suspect that Canadians and Americans are so much alike that it's hard to tell one from the other. If the person involved is an American, he'll probably agree.
But if he's a Canadian he'll let you know, in no uncertain terms, that you're wrong. And that stubborn sense of difference is one main reason why the two countries, despite similarities, remain separate.

THE PAST FEW DAYS

 DSC_0026

THEY BETTER NOT HAVE EATEN ALL THE SEEDS BEFORE I GET THERE OR ELSE!!

Our days have been rather quiet.  Usual stuff.  Kelly cleaned the rig’s interior while I have two thirds of the outside washed.  Kelly did a bunch of house cleaning while I burnt up a bunch of last months brush.  Working on a cactus garden at the front of the house as well.  Weather has really cooled off & I have been spending time in my recliner just curled up under a warm blanket watching television.  Just hadn’t been able to get myself interested in blogging the past couple days.  Flat lined with Blogger’s Block I first figured but it actually went a little deeper than that.  Really enjoyed our time in California’s Anza-Borrego area last week & I feel that may have been a part of my post-depression blues after we arrived back in Congress .

DSC_0002

WORKING AWAY AT BUILDING THIS CACTUS GARDEN UP WITH DIRT

When Kelly mentioned this morning about a number of comments in our Shout Box expressing concern I figured I had better get myself out of the rut I have been for a couple days.  And then Aunt Jean called from Florida expressing her concern as well & half an hour later the Sarge (John & Jackie) was at our door to see if we were alright.  So, guess I got some splaining to do………

IMG_1090

BURNING UP LAST MONTHS BRUSH CLEARING & TREE TRIMMING

First & foremost…..Kelly is fine & feeling great.  None of the negative medical symptoms that were plaguing her so badly last Spring & Summer have returned.  Both her mental & physical energies are up to par.  But we did end up at the Wickenburg Hospital & a medical center walk-in clinic later today.  More about that later in the post.

AND AWAY WE GO (ALL TONIGHT’S BIRD PHOTOS TAKEN THIS AFTERNOON)

I have talked about depression before in my posts & how it sometimes affects me.  It is something I deal with most noticeably when we return home to Canada after our 6 months away in the South-West.  As a rule we are generally more active in the winter months & that always goes a long way in keeping my depression at bay.  We always seem to have things going on & we are traveling to places & seeing things.  That’s a ‘biggy’ for me, keeps my mind occupied & focuses my attention on positive, constructive, & creative things.  Gives me new ideas to write about, new photos to take.  Our week on the road to Slab City & Borrego Springs was sooooo enjoyable our return to Congress & my unexpected backslide caught me by complete surprise.  Wrote a couple short posts but my usual enthusiasm for blogging was just not up to snuff.  Depression snuck up on me & I was down the tubes before I recognized the tell-tale signs.  And there are always tell-tale signs.  Loss of interest in things is a biggy.  I wrote a couple short posts because my heart wasn’t into it.  That was a sign.  Leaving my cameras behind on our morning walks for 2 day’s in a row was another.  Couldn’t get myself interested in my gardening projects either.  And when I end up sitting in a chair for hours upon hours just watching television it’s pretty clear where my mind has gone.  Hard part is to get oneself out of it.  No easy feat most times.

DSC_0048

STEP ASIDE DUDES I’M………….. BATBIRD!!

There have been times in the past where I have felt myself slipping & posted a note on my blog & simply said something to the effect, ‘no post tonight, taking a break’ or ‘everything’s fine, be back to tomorrow’.  But this time I just sunk into the mud too fast, shut my computer down, & the only thing I booted it up for a couple times was to check the ‘Obituaries’ back home.  Of course nothing unusual about that…..most, if not all of us folks at this age & stage of the game are in the daily habit of checking our hometown obit column to see if friends & acquaintances are still with us.

DSC_0007

<<< OH THERE GOES PEATIE SHOWING OFF HIS SWAN DIVE AGAIN MYRTLE

It’s been awhile since I dedicated most of my post to personal thoughts & feelings but felt today my absence over the past couple days warranted an explanation.  I have been making an effort to keep my posts on a somewhat upbeat scale this last while but it is hard for me to keep my feelings under wraps when I openly wear them on my sleeve.  There are folks out here who are able to do just that but I have never been one to hold in my feelings when it comes to my blog.  Whether I’m mad, glad, happy or sad it is going to show up in my posts.  It’s what makes my blog what it is & me who I am.  But occasionally even I manage to get my own self down.  As I have said before several times I am my own worst critic & when my self doubt takes a tumble I go down on the heavy side.  My blog usually bears the brunt of my criticism simply because it is a big part of who I am.

DSC_0021

MOVE OVER BUSTER IT’S MY TURN!!!!  >>>

Unlike some folks I am not able to gloss things over or not mention anything about how I’m feeling.  I can’t sit at my computer each night & write about how awesomely wonderful my perfectly splendid day was.  I do not perceive the reality of life like that therefore I do not write like that.  I enjoy the challenge of writing a post every day but there are times when I just can’t quite bend down far enough to pull up my own boot straps.  But life’s experience has shown me this is normal with everyone I have ever met.  Even those wishing to project an image of blissful & wondrous perfection.

DSC_0043

LA-LA-LALA-LALA-LA JUST FLYING BY

Well that’s about enough of that.  Just a few more things off my chest.  Want to thank folks in the Shout Box & emails for their concerns.  Aunt Jean calling from Florida & Sarge at the door kinda brought my head around & my day picked up from there.  My apologies for causing people concern.  One last thing though….I offer up a small defense for myself.  Since switching from a part time Blogger to a daily Blogger back in December of 2008 I think this was the first time I ever missed posting a blog 2 days in a row.  I’ve probably missed 7 or 8 days in the past 5  years but never 2 days in a row.  Not that I can remember anyway………….

HI HANDSOME, HOW D’YA LIKE MY WINGS?…AND OFF INTO THE WILD BLUE YONDER

Now back to today……….Kelly’s Bayfield Doctor told her she needed to have monthly blood tests to monitor her liver enzyme condition while away & that was something that could be done here in the States.  We had groceries & a few other errands today so it was off to the Wickenburg Hospital we went.  I waited outside while Kelly slipped into the hospital.  She was back 20 minutes later & discouraged.  They wanted $500 to do that blood test…………but there was a bright side.  A lady there quietly took Kelly aside & told her that particular test could be done a lot cheaper at either one of two private medical clinics just blocks away in downtown Wickenburg.  And that lady was right.  With directions we soon found the WHA Clinic & Kelly went in.  Twenty minutes later she was back & this time she had a smile on her face.  Not only had she already had the blood test done but the cost was only $60.  She will have the results Friday & the Clinic will fax them directly to Kelly’s Doctor in Canada.  That was the first of two breaks we caught today.

WICKENBURG’S DOWNTOWN MEDICAL CLINIC WHERE KELLY HAD HER BLOOD TEST TODAY

Second break occurred at the Safeway grocery store.  Kelly snagged a 23 pound fresh Turkey for $7.99.  Turkey had been ordered by a customer who failed to show & pick it up.  Meat department had just placed the turkey in the meat display cooler when Kelly came along & spotted it at the greatly reduced price.  We both like Turkey so you know what we will be eating for the next 2 weeks.  We wrapped up a few more errands in Wickenburg & were home about 2 p.m.  Skies had finally cleared from this mornings heavy overcast & rain.

NO WONDER THAT STAGECOACH IS IN A HURRY

Happy to say our Skunk problem seems to be over.  The Critter Cam has not picked up any more activity & no more Skunks have been caught.  Looks like 3 it was.  I set Les’s 2 live traps aside & with a few heavy cement blocks sealed up that large square hole in our foundation.  Hopefully that is the end of our Skunk problem.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  The Committee for the Reduction of Redundancy and the Anti-proliferation of Repetition has decided not to meet until they have their first meeting and thus will not be meeting until the first time.
Their Pre-meeting Statement wanted to make this clear before they had their first meeting, so that it would not be confusing.
So their first meeting will actually be their first meeting and they will not have a meeting before the first meeting.
This should avoid having people show up for their first meeting before it is held, since to do so would be confusing to those who did so and this is what they want to avoid by reducing the confusion and lessening the repetition.
