CHANGED OUR JEEP’S HEADLIGHT TODAY BUT I HAD AN ‘ACE IN THE HOLE’:))

I just didn’t get around to taking any photos today except of our headlight exchange & rather than digging around in my photo files for some pics I think I’ll just give our Verizon bandwidth, broadband, or whatever ya call it a break tonight:))

---

Probably our most exciting venture today was a drive over to Wickenburg for groceries.  I’ve written a few things in previous posts about my ventures into grocery stores & how I go about my hustling up & down each aisle hunting down my own stuff.  But here’s a little something I hadn’t mentioned before which I caught myself doing this morning.  Not the first time either but it’s just one of those odd little quirks I sometimes befall myself with.  Had my list of 10 items to find & as I picked up each one I took my pen & stroked it off my list in a little black shirt pocket book I always carry.  And yes I’ve written about that little black book before too.

---

Cruising smoothly down one aisle I spotted Safeway’s Yogurt section on my left & knowing I needed Yogurt slowed down, put on my turn signal & pulled over alongside the Yogurt shelf & picked me up a couple boxes of Yoggies.  Took out my little black book to stroke Yogurt off my list but noticed I had forgotten to write Yogurt down in the first place.  No problem as I took out my pen, wrote Yogurt on my list then happily stroked it off.  ‘WOW’ what a sense of accomplishment.  I bet none of you have ever done that, right.  Ya I didn’t think so:))

---

Really enjoying my new transition glasses & I’m finding even while driving I’m Okay with not having to wear my Cocoon sunglasses over top them so far.  How nice not to have to carry clip-on sunglasses in my shirt pocket anymore.  And what a treat seeing clearly through lenses that don’t look like they have been run over by a Yavapai road grader.

---

There is, has, & always will be a day come for each & everyone of us to finally hang up our RV keys for the last time for whatever reasons.  It marks the end of an era & there is always a sadness goes with it when we hear of folks we know, friends, family, or fellow RV’ers reaching that point.  And especially so with one of the most kind hearted easy going RV couples we have ever had the privilege of knowing & communicating with here on-line over the years in our tight knit sharing together RV community.  I’m speaking of course about none other than Donna & Russ Krecklow who just Wednesday gave up their keys & sold their Lazy Days RV.  I’ll let Donna’s thoughts tell you how they felt.  A Final Farewell.  And to show you how considerate & thoughtful of others these 2 people truly are, some readers may remember when back in early November of 2013 I received a surprise cardboard package in the mail.  That package came from Russ & you can read about what was in it here at, A Big Surprise In The Mail From Oregon Today.  And Russ, Hoppy still hangs proudly on our living room wall in the exact same spot I put him that day way back on November 4th 2013:))))))

---

While in Wickenburg this morning we stopped at O’Reilly Auto Parts & picked up another Jeep headlight.  Only $11 dollars which I didn’t think was too bad for a headlight.  Reluctantly agreed with myself to try this headlight installation myself.  From my many past experiences & a sordid track record of attempted mechanical repairs I could already sense my inner Gremlins lining up in great anticipation of once again delighting themselves by thwarting my every attempt at the task ahead.  So with that ominous thought in mind I set to work once we arrived home to swap out Jeepers burnt out headlight.  But to be fair…….I did have an ace up my sleeve:))

IMG_1846

<<< HEY I MANAGED TO GRAB A QUICK PIC OF THE SNOOZING PHEEBS JUST BEFORE PUBLISHING MY POST TONIGHT:))

I knew enough to lift the engine hood but that’s where my knowing enough stopped.  Stood blankly looking in confusement wondering where do I even start to un-install Jeepers bad headlight.  Then, a light bulb moment of my own.  Into the house I went & cranked up my computer.  A minute later found me typing in these words. ‘How to change a Jeep Wrangler headlight’.  And yep there it was, a step by step video on how to do it.  Figured I’d have to sit & watch it at least 35 times so’s to remember everything but watching it closely & using all my very best memory brain cells I headed back outside with my Philips screwdriver & trusty hammer as back-up.  Of course they weren’t Philips screws at all as I heard the first Gremlin snickers.  Now what?  Aha, I remembered a gizmo gadget in the Jeep with a bunch of variously sized Allen type ends on it & sure enough one of those little end dickenses actually fit so figured I was off to the races.  ‘Not so fast Ace Ventura’ chuckled a Gremlin or two.

 DSC_0001

I was able to remove 3 of 3 outer chrome ring screws with no problem but inside were 4 more smaller recessed harder to see & get at screws holding another rim in place.  That rim actually held the headlight in.  Gremlins were now in high antics knowing what was coming next but by gosh this time I was determined in doing a little thwarting myself.  Slipped into our shed & retrieved an old shower curtain along with a small towel from the house.  Laid that flower patterned shower curtain on the ground underneath where I would be working & stuffed a striped towel in under the headlight itself because I knew if the towel didn’t catch the small tiny screws when I of course dropped them then at least they would not become lost forever in our stone driveway under our Jeep.  Carefully removed 3 screws using a needle nose pliers to grasp each one to prevent them from falling when backed out of their holes.  Fourth screw got away from me & landed on the towel where I was easily able to grasp it with said pliers.  Good play AL I thought as I heard some distinct growling from the Gremlin Gallery.  From here I gently removed the second rim & even remembered to unplug Jeepers headlight from behind.  No small feat in remembering that I assure you.  But taking out each of these small screws I already knew I had a big problem!!

DSC_0004

There was no way I was ever going to get those screws back in their tiny little recessed holes without a magnetic screwdriver holding tightly to each one & I already knew my fingers were too big to try & start those screws in the narrow space I had to work with.  And I hadn’t even touched on the thought of patience yet but I’m sure my Gremlin nemeses’s were already gleefully anticipating & gearing up that embarrassing little scenario for me.   Ok………….it was time to play my ‘ace in the hole’ & by golly here she comes now:))  Kelly had just walked out of the house to see how I was doing.  She knew better than to figure I was doing well.  After over 20 years she too is quite familiar with my mechanical failings & shaky left handed monkey wrench track record.

DSC_0005

Holding Jeepers new headlight in place & aligning all 4 screw holes for the rim Kelly deftly inserted each & every screw using her slimmer fingers, supplied Jeep tool, & much larger patience reservoir.  And she did this with nary dropping a screw into towel or onto shower curtain below.  It was truly a team effort & one which I could not have completed without her…..except for maybe if I would have had a magnetic screwdriver.  Nawwww, the Gremlins would probably have had their way shutting off the magnetism at a crucial point causing me to loose 3 out of 4 screws for sure.  Yep, it was my ‘ace in the hole’ what saved the day alright.  AL 1 – Gremlins 0. Hahahahahahahahahahaha on all you smart ass Gremlins for a change & so there!!  I like when that occasionally happens:))

DSC_0006

LEFT ONE IS JEEPERS NEW HEADLIGHT & UPS WILL BE DELIVERING OUR 2 NEW FOG LIGHT REPLACEMENTS FRIDAY…WILL THAT BE A JOB FOR ME TO TACKLE??  NO SIREEEEE, NOT SOMETHING I CAN DO WITH MY SCREWDRIVER & HAMMER PLUS I WANT TO SAVOR MY ONE TO NOTHING GREMLIN VICTORY JUST A LITTLE WHILE LONGER ANYWAY:))

GROANER’S CORNER:(( A man had been driving all night and by morning was still far from his destination. He decided to stop at the next city he came to, and park somewhere quiet so he could get an hour or two of sleep. As luck would have it, the quiet place he chose happened to be on one of the city's major jogging routes.  No sooner had he settled back to snooze when there came a knocking on his window.  He looked out and saw a jogger running in place.  "Yes?"  "Excuse me, sir," the jogger said, "do you have the time?"  The man looked at the car clock and answered, "8:15."  The jogger said thanks and left. The man settled back again, and was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window and another jogger.  "Excuse me, sir, do you have the time?"  "8:25!"  The jogger said thanks and left. Now the man could see other joggers passing by and he knew it was only a matter of time before another one disturbed him.  To avoid the problem, he got out a pen and paper and put a sign in his window saying, "I do not know the time!"  Once again he settled back to sleep. He was just dozing off when there was another knock on the window.

"Sir? It's 8:45."

TOOK ME A FEW SWEEPS OF THE NIGHT SKY BUT I FINALLY FOUND IT

DSC_0010-002

First a thank you to always alert Ed at The Peregrinating Graybeard for pointing out an incorrect link I had included for Doug Laning’s Miss Adventure Travels in my Tuesday night post.  I corrected that error this morning & my apologies to Doug for that incorrect link.  What would we Bloggers do if we didn’t have our ever vigilante reader watch dogs out here eh:))

I SEE A CHERUBIC LITTLE PUPPY DOG PERSON FLOATING ALONG ON IT’S BACK OVER TOP THE MOTORHOME

It took me a bit of looking in Tuesday night’s dark sky but I finally found it.  Checking an on-line celestial map before heading outside I knew to begin my search west of a bright star called Aldebaran & luckily knew what to expect when I found what I was looking for because this was not my first time sighting this kind of object.  My object of search was Comet Lovejoy.  Took me a few sweeps with my Bausch & Lomb 7x50 binoculars but sure enough there it was barely visible in my view as a very faint smudge against an expansive star studded ebony sky.  I had better be dusting off my 80mm Stellarvue Nighthawk telescope shortly for a closer look.

I ALWAYS LOVE TO HAVE A GOOD REASON TO SCRATCH ME AROUND IN SOME DIRT:))

It’s a good thing I re-located our Friend Connect box in my right hand side bar or I wouldn’t have noticed we picked up another Blog Follower overnight.  We here at the Bunch welcome Jan Mains to our travels & stay at home times.  I couldn’t find a blog for Jan because whenever a link takes me into Google + land I seem to become lost & have difficulty finding my way around.  Am hoping the link I have included takes you to Jan’s ‘About’ page.  Looks like Jan & husband Bill are very active RV’ers belonging to several RV related clubs including the Escapees.

A RELAXING AFTERNOON SHELTERED FROM A COOL WIND

I wasn’t long in planting all my Aloe Vera plants this morning.  Majority of them went into my Cactus beds with 6 smaller ones going into clay pots.  Will be interesting now to see just how many of them actually live.  At least I was able to give 35 plants a fighting chance at life again.  And that in my books is classed as a good feeling:))

Completed my 2 little painting projects today as well.  When I opened a can of brown paint I had used to paint our fireplace bricks 2 winters ago I found it had jelled to a Jell-O consistency.  No matter as I added some water & stirred vigorously.  It was a door frame I used it on & the frame looks fine now as if it was made out of adobe.  Other project was some white paint on a ceiling repair.  We’re good to go:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Three guys go in for a job interview, all at the same office. The first one goes in for his interview and the interviewer says, "What's the first thing you see when you look at me?" The guy says, "That's not too hard, you've got no ears." The interviewer says, "That's it, get out, you'll never be seen around here again." The second man takes his turn and is asked the same question. The applicant replies, "Uh, you've got no ears." The interviewer throws the guy out, cursing and yelling that he'll never get a job with his company. As he is leaving, the second guy warns the third guy, "Listen man, whatever you do, don't say he hasn't got any ears. He's so touchy with the ear thing." "Okay," said man #3 on his way into the office. Once inside he is told, "Name the first thing you notice when you look at me." The guy answers, "That's easy, you wear contacts." The interviewer was flabbergasted, "How on earth did you know that, son?" "Well Sir, anybody knows you can't wear glasses if you don’t have any ears."

IT IS GREAT CLOUD PATTERNS LIKE THIS WHICH LATER IN THE DAY MAKE FOR GREAT ARIZONA SUNSETS

Had us a fiery splash of pastel colors stretching across our evening sky as another Arizona sunset settled in over our distant western horizon.  Colors playfully bounded overhead streaming from cloud to cloud touching each with an artists palette of golds & yellows, rose colors, & blushing pinks.  It was a site to behold.DSC_2810

It is well known I do not like hot weather but I do like to be on the warm side.  Through winter months desert nights can be uncomfortably cold.  It’s just the way it is here in the southwest & staying cozily warm while out in the boonies can be a challenge.  In their latest post Cherie & Chris from Technomadia address’s those cold nights with tips & advice on how to stay warm & conserve energy & heat.  Kelly & I differ in our heat level comforts.  When we had our Class A Damon with our Legacy Blue Flame heater hooked up I was cozy as toast in the front half of the rig each night with temps hovering well over 70 while Kelly in the back half of the coach would often sleep with her window open while temperatures hovered somewhere down around icicle level.  A few posts ago I included a link to Peter & Bea's post about their struggles against a fierce Alberta winter while living in their travel travel.  A Michigan couple also toughing out the winter in their 5th wheel are having a bit of a time with it as well…… The Mysterious RV Refrigerator.

Happy times over at Miss Adventure Travels as Doug Laning brings Yuma Arizona Laning home today.  It was a long process since Doug first laid eyes on Yuma back on December 27th.  I think it’s the start of a great friendship & these 2 guys are going to end up being best of Pals.  Doug even thinks he & Yuma look alike.  Slip on over & you be the judge who’s the best looker at their house now:))

Heavy clouds & lite rains returned during our overnight dark hours.  Upside of our recent rains make digging in hard desert dirt easier for me.  Yep, still working away at my various little cactus garden projects.  DSC_2816

Hey I just made it through a paragraph without having to use a word I use way too often & one which bugs me just about every time I use it.  I am determined to minimize it wherever I can re-write my sentences around it.  What is that word??  ‘The’……Geeeezzzz, now I gotta work on another overused word which I just used 6 times in 3 sentences.  It’s that word ‘I’ which too many times dominates my writings………………

A commenter over in our Shout Box has obviously not read my blog for any length of time or if the commenter has he/she would not have had a reasonably intelligent reason for leaving that comment.  I do again suspect a he.  It is true we have made an extra effort to see a few more folks recently but it is still not the norm for us.  And why would it bother someone anyway unless of course it is my usual antagonist still throwing stones.  I will just file that comment under ‘Sour Grapes’.

It wasn’t a long run in the Jeep we had but at least Pheebs & I made it to Congress’s Dollar Store for a quart of milk this afternoon.  Of course when I walked back out towards our Jeep she was all wonkers thinking I had one of our usual Tuna Sub’s for us to split.  Sorry Pheebs, gotta wait till we get back to our country road runs in Bayfield.  Heading back home we stopped at Congress’s B&B garage to inquire about one of our new burnt-out headlights.  Just had it installed October 20th but no warranty on it.  No choice but to pick up a another new one at O’Reilly’s in Wickenburg & see if I can hook it up myself.  Think I got a screw driver around here somewhere & if not I have my trusty fix-all hammer.  No idea why a less than 3 month old head light would burn out:((

Had one little section of cactus garden to dig up this morning & figured after last night’s & this morning’s rain I would be able to dig easier in our hardened driveway gravel.  Nope, almost bent the shovel blade in half.  Remembered my big 22-10 ton steel shanked & steel toed work boots from years ago when I was helping with some tree cutting in our 5 Seasons Park.  And yes with all that steel in them it feels like they weigh 10 tons too.  With heavier boots I was able to bring more power to bear on my shovels steel blade & eventually managed to turn over some very hard gravelly dirt.  Not often I work up a sweat anymore but by golly I sure did just that this morning finishing up my last little cactus bed project.  Well, I always say it’s my last project but then……………….scuffle, dig, scrape, grunt a bit, swear a lot, dig some more, grunt some more, & darned if I’m not at it again!!  I have a couple small painting projects in our house so I had better get myself turned around a bit & some priorities straightened out.  Scuffle, scrape, grunt, & swear.  Better get at it & better take care:))

MANAGED TO DIG ME IN 2 OF SOME 40 ALOE VERA TYPE PLANTS THIS AFTERNOON

Skies cleared about mid morning once again lifting our Spirits.  Amazing healing powers old Sol has.  Kelly a few days ago noticed one of our neighbors had thrown a whole bunch of dug out Aloe Vera type plants into a ditch by his place.  Seeing him today Kelly asked if he was throwing them out & if so could we have them to which he replied ‘sure’.  Well we weren’t long in getting over there with our wheelbarrow & scooping about 40 plants.  May go back for more tomorrow.  We already have some of these plants & they do very well spreading out creating a great ground cover.  I’ll have my work cut out for me Wednesday morning getting them all planted.  It was a bonus find:))

Some mighty fine helpful feed back on not only my Tuesday night post but Steve's post as well in regards to the ‘what if’ factor regarding his or anyone else’s pet care should anything happen to them while away from their RV.  Good positive suggestions & I thank reader’s & fellow RV’ers for that.  Might want to go back & check some additional comments on both mine & Steve’s posts.

DSC_2814

And I was encouraged to also see feedback from fellow RV’ers on Janna's blog this morning as well as my post several days ago regarding socializing.  It seems a lot of folks came out to say how they felt about it & I must say I was surprised to see so many people feeling very similar to how Kelly & I feel about the whole RV social scene.  Maybe we are not quite as different in our thoughts as I thought we were.  It’s just that some of us express our thoughts & opinions about it more often & more openly than others.  I always like it when ‘iffy’ topics are brought out into the open & ‘take off’ with folks helping each other & talking responsibly about things.  Nice:))

GROANER’S CORNER:(( A woman had gained a few pounds. It was most noticeable to her when she squeezed into a pair of her old blue jeans. Wondering if the added weight was noticeable to everyone else, she asked her husband, "Honey, do these jeans make me look like the side of the house?"  "No, dear, not at all," he replied, "Our house isn't blue."  He is almost over the cold he caught sleeping in the garage for 3 nights.

---

A wife had suffered for a week from a really nasty virus and it left her feeling completely wiped out. On the first day that she could crawl out of bed, she discovered a "silver lining."  Pulling on a pair of jeans, she called out to her husband, "These jeans fit! They finally fit!"
"That's great," the husband replied, "but they're mine."

WATCHING THE BIRD FEEDER BELOW LIKE A HAWK
Came across a website/blog this morning that caught my attention simply because of it’s age oriented focus.  Time Goes By is hosted by Ronni Bennett with about half a dozen like minded contributors.  A lot of info on this site.  I like Peter Tibbles article entitled: ELDER MUSIC: Nudie Suits.  So that’s where all those bizarre clothes came from worn by musicians over the years.  From Hank Williams to Elvis, Roy Rogers to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.  Rhinestones, glitter, & glam.

Steve over at Hounds RVs and Retirement Living is looking for some opinions & feedback on a tough question I’m sure many RV’ers including ourselves have faced while traveling with pets.  This question came up front & center for Kelly & I years ago when we had a little incident in a Mexican border town south of Lukeville Arizona.  We had left Max, Checkers, & Cora in our locked Motorhome one morning before driving about 15 miles into Mexico for a look around at some shops.  Had us a scary little happening there that on the way home later had us asking the question, ‘what if that situation had gone the other way & we had been detained in Mexico for any length of time!!    What would have happened to our 3 dogs. Not being in the habit of traveling with others or telling anyone where we were the situation could have had a bad ending all way around.  That Mexican border incident can be seen in my 2008 post entitled: Our Mexican Border Town Incident.  Steve, possibly a future solo traveler is basically asking the same question we did & it’s a very real & legitimate common sense question to ask.  And much better to have forward thinking questions like that rather than racing into something with little thought or preparation.  I’m sure most of us have done that ‘little thought or preparation’ thing in our lives (especially in our younger years) in more ways than one. We have sometimes luckily reaped the benefits of that thought process but quite often we may have suffered the consequences as well from that kind of thinking.   I know the saying, ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’ but it’s only a saying & there are way too many illogical sayings out there belonging in old dusty books & not practical thinking people’s minds.  Again, common sense is the key here.  Anyway, I’m sure Steve would appreciate your thoughts, ideas, advice, & opinions……………………………..

Mike from the dynamic duo of Janna & Mike popped over this afternoon to see about tightening up a loose screw on one of our Jeeps fog lights.  Unfortunately out of the 3 containers of tools Mike had with him Chrysler’s Jeep division obviously decided to use a screw that must have been manufactured on another Planet.  Think we’ll just take both fog light assemblies right off & bolt on a new set & be done with it.  Bolts are pretty rusty anyway.  Mike no sooner left when handyman Les showed up & completed a repair to our kitchen ceiling.  He’ll be back again to install our new kitchen faucets shortly as well.
