WE SURE WEREN’T LONG IN FLINGING OUR DRAPES OPEN THIS MORNING:))

DSC_3103

<<< I THINK THIS LITTLE LADY HAS ONE MIGHTY FINE LOOKING WHITE SKIRT ON

Can’t tell you how happy I was this morning about 5:30 when Pheebs & I stepped out the door under a big black beautiful sky with zillions of dazzling stars overhead.  Clouds all gone:))  Checking today’s 10 day forecast there is nothing but sunshine & 70 degree temps ahead.  We weren’t long in opening all our east side window drapes letting Sunday morning’s warming sunlight spill through & send our gray rain soaked spirits soaring:))

“"YOU FIRST – NO, YOU FIRST

Again taking advantage of soft earth from recent rains I decided to thin out & re-locate some small Joshua Trees on our back yard neighbors property.  Carefully dug up 4 trees & re-planted them at the head of his driveway right next to our south fence & gate.  If they grow they will look nice not only for our neighbor but us as well.  Of course by the time those trees reach maturity we will be long gone but maybe future property owners will someday enjoy my efforts this morning.  I also trimmed back Mesquite branches which were beginning to crowd our fence line as well as along our neighbor’s laneway.  Don’t know if we’ll see our Alberta neighbor this year but if he does come down from Canada his driveway will be clear.  But here’s an odd thing.  A car pulled up to our neighbor’s locked gate Saturday, 3 older men got out & walked up the laneway & had themselves a look all around the property & house.  We’re now wondering if maybe our absentee neighbor maybe has his house & property up for sale.  We’re hoping not because for 2 years now with nobody there it has been so delightfully quiet.

DSC_0003

SURE HOPE THESE SMALL JOSHUA TREES TAKE ROOT & GROW

Well here we are at February 1rst already.  A short month from now & we’ll be into March already.  Again our winter season in the southwest seems to be passing quickly.  We will soon have to decide on which route we will take heading home.  Quickest way is Oklahoma City up through St. Louis but it is very unlikely we will go that way.  Just don’t like the big cities & besides we have no reason to hurry on home anyway as long as we don’t put off our departure until the last minute.  Maybe a little early for those travel plans but it’s just something to begin warming up a bit on the back burner.  We had talked about a route down through southeastern Arizona then east on over to Florida to visit Aunt Jean, Kelly’s sister & husband Becky & Norm, Peter & Leslie on vacation there, then up the eastern seaboard to Spencerport NY for a visit with Kelly’s Mother before heading crossing the border & home.  But after our long rough trip down last Fall we have decided the Florida route is just way too much of a long haul for Kelly’s health & for that reason alone we just head straight for Bayfield when we leave here in March.  We’ll see how the summer goes & maybe take a second look at that Florida route in 10 months from now on our return to the southwest for another winter season.  For sure October would be a much better travel month than March.

Not a whole lot else to write about tonight.  After my tree trimming & planting this morning the day just kind of slowed down to a crawl.  Tipped back in my chair near our birdfeeder for awhile this afternoon & watched the comings & goings of our backyard birds for awhile.  Managed to snag a few more photos.

DSC_3101

I was just about to hit the ‘publish’ button tonight when Kelly ran into a major dilemma.  I heard a gasp from the living room & quickly hollered “what’s wrong” to which I heard a frantic reply, “I can’t get Downton Abbey, there’s something wrong with the PBS high definition channel”!!!!!!!  Well indeed it was an emergency alright.  The channel reception would come on for a few seconds then go off again.  Kelly was in absolute panic mode.  I right away suspected our satellite dish.  With recent rains I figured the tripod legs may have shifted slightly downward in the soft ground.  I figured right as I raced out of the house & quickly tilted the dish upwards by just a hair.  A happy holler came from the living room & all was well with the world again.  Whewwww, close call I’d say……………………

I’M THINKING THIS MIGHT BE A NORTHERN FLICKER

GROANER’S CORNER:(( An Octogenarian moved to a new town and joined the local Country Club. He went to the Club for the first time to play but was told everyone scheduled to play was already out on the course. He was so disappointed, the Assistant Pro said he would play with him and would give him a 12 stroke handicap.
The 80 year old said, "I really don't need a handicap. The only real problem I have is getting out of sand traps."
They both played well. Coming into the par three 18th they were even. The pro had a nice drive to mid-fairway and would be able to get on the green with the next stroke and then putt for a par with the following play.
The old man hit a long drive, and the ball landed in one of the two sand traps around the hole. Shooting from the sand trap on his second stroke, he hit a high ball which landed on the green and rolled right into the hole!
The Assistant Pro was stunned. "Nice shot, but I thought you said you have a problem getting out of sand traps."
"I do," replied the octogenarian. "Give me a hand."

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY & DON’T COME BACK AGAIN TODAY!!

STARING STRAIGHT DOWN AT A 3’ TALL BARREL CACTUS…1 OF 2 IN OUR FRONT YARD

Rains returned overnight & heavy at times as it beat upon my bedroom roof.  Sure glad Peter & Leslie picked the week to visit they did & not this past week with it’s very wet ending.  Rains did end about 7 a.m. & our skies finally began a slow clearing.  While walking across our front yard at 8:43 this morning I suddenly became aware of something walking along beside me.  It was my shadow……..yaaaay, our first burst of sunshine in a couple days:)))))))DSC_3057

Figured with all our recent rain it would be a good opportunity while the ground is soft & workable to get my shovel into the ground today & finish up my northeast property project.  So that’s what I did.  While digging along it occurred to me that unlike the soil back home in Ontario I have not come across one single solitary earth worm.  About a dozen grubs & one Horny Toad.  I took time to replace the Grubs & single Toad putting them back into their hibernating dirt environment from whence I had dug them up.  No harm done to any of those fellows hopefully.  And just when we thought we were done with all this rain we got clobbered with a totally unexpected fast moving 10 minute cloudburst about 1:30.  That caught us with Jeep windows down, an open tool box sitting out, Motorhome door open, & my shirt draped over the wheelbarrow too far away to worry about.

MY RAIN SOAKED WORK GLOVES ARE IN THAT WET WATERY WHEELBARROW AS WHEEL

Here’s a new & informative website just up put together by the hard working RV team of Brian & Leigh from Aluminumarian.  This site called Campendium will center around finding places to camp & includes links to blog posts about RV Parks, public campgrounds, & boondocking spots.  To help grow this site folks are invited to participate & interact with their own camp ground reviews, links, & any information they can provide which will be helpful to fellow RV’ers.  And a reminder…..Nina from Wheeling it has just posted another segment of her 4 part series called Boondocking For Newbies Part 11 >> Prepping Your RV. THIS PRETTY MUCH FINISHES OUR NORTHEASTERN CORNER OF THE PROPERTY EXCEPT FOR PLANTINGS

Well how nice to end our day under clearing skies.  What a great pick-me-up that always is after a couple gloomy rain soaked days.  Makes a feller just want to jump up in the air & click his heels……………………………..:))

JUST ONE HOUR AFTER TAKING THIS PHOTO LATE THIS AFTERNOON IT WAS POURING RAIN AGAIN…SO MUCH FOR JUMPING UP & CLICKING ANY HEELS:((

GROANER’S CORNER:(( Most of us have a bad habit we are constantly trying to break. For one woman, it's biting her fingernails.  One day she told her husband about the latest solution: press-on nails.  "Great Idea, Honey," he smiled. "You can eat them straight out of the box."

---

Two elderly women were fussing about their husbands over tea one day.  "I do wish my Leroy would stop biting his nails. That makes me terribly nervous!" the first one said.  "Oh, my Elmer used to do the same thing," the other woman commented. "But I broke him of that habit real quick."  "What did you do?"  "I hid his teeth!"

12 HOURS OF STEADY RAIN HAVE LEFT US IN A RATHER SOGGY STATE OF AFFAIRS HERE IN THE DESERT

DSC_0006

Looking out our door first thing this morning I said to Kelly, ‘Well we might just as well just stay in our jammies all day’.  Rain had began Thursday evening & continued through the night.  We had a small stream running through our back yard right up till about noon when the rains finally stopped.  By evening I was heartened to see some clearing on the western horizon.  Hill tops & mountains around Congress & to the east were still cloaked in fog though.

Pheebs wouldn’t even go off the porch.  Lights were on in our neighbor’s work shop so figured he was probably in there hastily building himself a boat.  Still a bit dark out when the rains let up enough for me to zip outside for a few water pics.  Had to be quick because water on the ground here in the desert does not pool for long & drains away quickly.

DSC_0003

Thought Marianne from frugal-rv-travel. com had a good over-all assessment regarding the phenomena of Quartzsite Arizona.  Aside from all the razzle-dazzle we normally associate with the Q every January there is probably an even bigger reason for RV’ers making their annual pilgrimage to the small dusty desert town out there in the middle of just about anywhere.  I think Marianne got it right.

Do you ever find the hardest part of doing anything sometimes is just making up your mind to do it?  I’m kind of like that when it comes to attending any social gatherings or going anywhere I’m really not fond of going.  If I’m asked to go somewhere or do something my first inclination is to say no.  Right away my mind comes up with about 3 good reasons & a 176 in-excusable excuses not to do something or go somewhere.  Happens to me all the time & that side of me usually has it’s way.  But occasionally another part of my personality comes through, kicks my butt out the door & sends me on my way to do something I’m not really wanting to do.  Blogger-Fest 2015 in Quartzsite was a good example of that & it was a good example of what quite often happens when the ‘yes’ side prevails over the ‘no’ side.  Right up until Saturday morning a week ago my yes & no sides were tussling back & forth with my yes side finally winning out & off we went.  And as sometimes happens I really enjoyed my time at Blogger-Fest meeting everyone.  Any monstrous fears I had conjured up before hand quickly dissipated shortly after arriving & despite my usual feelings of nervousness I found myself even speaking up when it was our turn in the group to say who we were.  I had previously said to Kelly, when that speaking up time comes around ‘you’ can do that!!   When I heard our number called my hand shot up & my mouth took off.  Luckily I didn’t embarrass myself with a lot of blabbering.  Believe it or not I have been known to do that on occasion.  Heading back to Congress later that day we both had the same thought & came to the same conclusion, we were both glad we went.  It’s like my very own tag line says at the bottom my posts……….’It is not so much having nothing to do as it is not having the interest to do something’.

Well it took me awhile but between Google Earth, my California Bench Mark Atlas, the Mojave National Preserve website, & Sue Malone’s post Boondocking Sites & Camping In Mojave National Preserve I finally managed to get an idea of the layout at the Preserve.  Ten day weather forecast for that area has temperature coming up into the 70’s next week with low 80’s by a week from Sunday.  All sunny days of course.  Monitoring the Preserve areas weather I have noticed it mirrors our Congress weather.  Congress likewise is headed for 70 & 80 degree temps by the end of next week.

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Two husbands were discussing their married lives. Although happily married, they admitted that there were arguments sometimes. Then the first man said, "I've made one great discovery. I now know how to always have the last word."  "Wow!" said the second, "how did you manage that?"  "It's easy," he replied. "My last word is always 'Yes, Dear.' "

HAVE YOU EVER LOOKED AT YOUR FEET & FELT LIKE A TEEN-AGER? HAPPENED TO ME TODAY…….:))

DSC_0001

I WAS BUSY LIKE A GOPHER DIGGING IN THE DIRT AGAIN THIS MORNING

Clouds moved in late Wednesday & it looks like we are in for some inclement weather over the next 3 days with a fair amount of rain predicted for sure Friday & possibly Saturday as well.  Might have to get ourselves in a boatload of DVD movies.

DSC_3023

Weed Whacker started on the 4th pull so I was off to the races first thing today whacking down all the yellow dead grass along the ditch between our front fence & Ghost Town Road.  Had it all raked up & burnt inside of an hour.  More digging in our yards northeast corner & by 3 this afternoon I was so tired I felt about ready to slip into my jammies & crawl into bed.  And here’s an odd thing I noticed again while digging today…….when I begin sweating it is only the right side of my forehead & not the left  that drips sweat onto my glasses & into my right eye.  Don’t suppose it’s that ‘left brain/right brain thing do you.  Oh Geeezzzz better not get into that whole discussion again……………………..

Leslie From Australia had a few questions in our Shout Box I’d like to take time to answer.  Leslie asks, ‘Al - do u type out your blog - then copy & paste into blogger’? -- Here in Congress & while traveling in the Motorhome I type my post directly into Live Writer using my laptop but while at home in Bayfield I use 2 computers during the day so type my post in an email format in Hotmail then save it to Draft.  That way I can access what I’m writing with either my laptop in the living room by my recliner or desktop computer in the sunroom.  At night when my post is completely written I paste it into Live Writer on my desktop computer.  For some unknown reason my desktop version of Live Writer has un-expectantly & suddenly erased 3 completed posts on me now so if & when that happens again I do have my original back-up post still sitting in my Hotmail Draft folder.  I can just paste it into Live Writer again & re-insert my photos.  Leslie also asks, ‘Does it wrap around your pics? which ones 1st - blog or pics’? – In between each paragraph I write I leave a double space.  When I have finished writing my entire post I go back & insert my photos into those open spaces between paragraphs.  Live Writer has a tool which enables me to arrange the photos in those spaces however I want.  So in other words, I write the post first then add the photos later.  Thanks for the questions Leslie……….

<<< JUST A LITTLE BASHFUL TODAY

And this little bit of info & a correction for fellow Canadian Snowbirds from the Canadian Snowbird Association.

In a recent article which appeared on CBC News' British Columbia website, it was suggested that Canadian citizens are only allowed to spend 120 days in the United States each year. For clarification purposes, the Canadian Snowbird Association would like to remind travellers to the U.S. that this information is incorrect.  Under current policy, eligible Canadian citizens may spend up to six months less a day, in the United States, in any 12 month period. From a tax perspective, long-term visitors who typically spend four or more months in the U.S. each calendar year may be deemed resident aliens for tax purposes. In order to be treated as a non-resident alien, these individuals need to claim a "closer connection" to Canada by filing IRS Form 8840 annually.  Further, the CBC News article also discussed the Entry/Exit Initiative, a bi-national border program in which entry and exit data will be shared on individuals travelling between Canada and the United States. While this initiative was scheduled to be expanded on June 30, 2014, to include Canadian and American citizens, the necessary legislative and regulatory changes have not been implemented. At present, the Entry/Exit Initiative is not fully operational.  If you have any questions related to this matter, please do not hesitate to contact the CSA office toll-free at 1-800-265-3200 or by email at mailto:csastaff@snowbirds.org?subject=U.S.%20Travel%20Rules.

<<< PEEK-A-BOO I SEE YOU TOO

Hey guys, have you ever looked at your feet & felt like a teen-ager?  Happened to me today.  Remember years ago when it was cool to wear white socks.  Especially on Saturday nights heading out to do a bit a dancin somewhere.  Blue or black jeans, shiny pointed shoes or cowboy boots. Trouble with boots was you couldn’t show off your groovy white socks so for me it was pointed black shiny shoes.  With white socks a showin it was off to our local Teen Town dance I was.  And those were the days well before anyone had ever heard of the ‘Fonz’.  For many years now I have just worn black unassuming socks until a few days ago when I picked up a couple pairs of socks on sale (50% off) at the Alco Store in Wickenburg.  No they weren’t black but one pair was light gray & the other pair white.  When I stepped out of my shower this afternoon I pulled me on the white pair.  Soon as I saw those white colored socks walking along underneath me I was right away whisked back to my teen years.  Before I knew it my legs was a movin, my feets was a jumpin, my hips was a rotatin, my arms was a flailin & my head was a boppin.  I was right back into another Saturday night swinging Teen Town dance in my old home town of Tavistock Ontario.  And by golly it was my new white socks today that took me all the way back there too.  Aren’t old memories sometimes just the best & see how good a new pair of white socks can make a feller feel.  Just gotta watch out for those rotatin arms & flailing hips though………………..:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A woman was talking to her friends about her husband who had passed away.
When her husband was on his death bed, and he told her that he had three envelopes in his desk drawer that would "take care" of all of the arrangements. Well, he died shortly thereafter, so the wife opened the drawer and there were 3 envelopes just like he said.  One the first envelope it said "for the casket". There was $5,000.00 in the envelope, so she bought him a very nice casket.  The second envelope said "for the expenses" and had $4,000.00 in it so she paid all the bills from the funeral.  The third envelope said "for the stone" and had $3,000.00 in it. She then held her hand out to her friends and said, "Isn't it beautiful!!!"

A NEW YARD PROJECT & PUTTING MY POST’S TOGETHER EACH DAY

DSC_0004

STARTED WORKING ON THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF OUR PROPERTY TODAY

After a couple relaxing days of doing mostly nothing I figured I had better get me into mostly a day of doing something so with that thought in my mind I decided it would be a good time to start working on the northeast corner of our property facing Ghost Town Road.  Southeast side with the paths is mostly done now so I really needed to get myself into another project before I dried up & the winds of boredom blew me away.

DSC_3014

First came a clean-up so started out with a job I least like.  I try to avoid pull-start small gasoline engines of any kind but the only way to get the old dried & dead 6” grass out of the way was to fire up the weed whacker.  Been nearly a year since I had run it last.  Took about 473 pulls but finally got the noisy thing started & had me a go at the whipper snippering.  With that out of the way I next hauled in my leaf rake to rake up all the scattered grass plus stones & gravel on the ground.  Trimmed up a prickly Mesquite bush & by 11 I started with my shovel in the ground.  No idea what I am going to end up with in this corner of the property yet but I’m sure it will all come together as I go along.  This northeast corner is a different layout from the southeast corner so I will for sure do it differently.  No paths planned for this side.  Another reason to get rolling on this today is the soft workable earth left after our recent rains a few days ago.  The morning just turned out to be so beautiful for working outside with temps in the mid 60’s that I just wanted to be outside doing something.  It was noon when I first became aware of the first beads of sweat dropping off my brow so knew it was time to pack it in for the day.  Big chance of rain coming this Friday.

DSC_3036FEMALE NORTHERN CARDINAL >>>

I’m not a big Facebook person but a few days ago I decided to change my profile photo since the one on there was from 2011.  Kelly had taken a photo of Judy & I at Blogger Fest 2015 so I cropped a head & shoulders for my small thumbnail profile pic.  ‘YIKES’ I had no idea it would show up that size on everybody’s Facebook page.  It was supposed to be just a small thumbnail for my profile picture.  Anyway, in that photo it appears I have a double set of sunglasses.  Retired Rod noticed that so here’s the skinny.  In the photo I am wearing transition glasses so they appear dark because of the sunlight.  On my hat are a larger regular pair of Cocoon sunglasses.  So what’s with that?  I have read & been told I will still need sunglasses for driving even with my transition glasses so before we left Congress I put my rather large sunglasses on my hat in case I needed them & where they wouldn’t get lost or bent in my pocket.  Well you know the old saying, ‘out of sight out of mind’.  I didn’t need them driving to Blogger-Fest & totally forgot they were even on my hat.  Wasn’t till we got home & I took my hat off that I remembered them.  So Rod, there ya go……the story of why 2 sets of sunglasses.  And to any Facebook readers…..sorry if my big mug photo traumatized you……I can assure you it was not intentional!!

DSC_3021

Ok I will try to keep this short……..How do I write my blog every day?  In my first 4 or 5 years of blogging I would begin writing my post for the day after supper each night.  I don’t do that anymore.  Over the past 4 years or so I quite often start my post first thing in the morning maybe an hour or two after I get up.  Depending on what topic I choose I may write a couple paragraphs before I even get dressed.  For the rest of the day depending on what’s happening & going on I might sit down at my keyboard & write a few more paragraphs.  I find it is easier this way to write my mind’s thoughts & memories as I go along.  For instance today I came around 10 for a break from my outside clean-up & wrote a paragraph about my yard project.  At noon when I came in I wrote another paragraph & find by doing it this way I am not sitting in my chair at night trying to recall what I did or didn’t do all day.  Sometimes a few lines or a thought will pop into my mind during the day & if I don’t quickly copy it down chances are very good I will never remember what it was I had thought about.  Doing it this way it’s not unusual for my entire post to sometimes be finished by early evening.  However I still have most of the day’s photos to edit so I occasionally try to edit some photos during the day as well.  Doing things this way saves me those late tiring & frustrating nights of years ago trying to put the whole post together all at once after supper.  That’s what happens when we are on the road traveling.  After a long tiring day of driving I still have my whole post to put together once we get stopped but yet it is still an enjoyable challenge for me despite my fits of impatience at slow internet connections at times.  Nevertheless It’s always a rewarding feeling at the end of each day to finally hit that ‘Publish’ button & put another long day’s post behind me………….:))

GROANER’S CORNER:(( There's a story about the military pilot calling for a priority landing because his single-engine jet fighter was running "rough."  Air Traffic Control told the fighter jock that he was number two behind a B-52 that had one engine shut down.  "Ah," the pilot remarked, "the dreaded seven-engine approach."
