MY WALK AROUND, PHOTOS AND OBSERVATIONS OF TORNADO RAVISHED GODERICH ONTARIO‏

DSC_4404

MANGLED ROOF OF THE UNITED CHURCH

With our recent spate of bad weather it was nice to see calm sunny skies this morning.  Kelly was home so figured I would take the opportunity to head on up to Goderich and have a look at the tornado damage.  Main arteries leading in are still blocked off but most of the back streets are open and accessible.  Made my way down to the harbour and main beach area right across from the Sifto Salt Mine.  I was on the opposite side of the buildings I had been last Monday morning and could see far more destruction on this side.

The damage was very obvious and I could see the large salt conveyor belt machine that had crumpled to the ground while in the process of filling a large lake freighter. (Monday's photos)  The ship is gone now so it was easy to see across the narrow harbour entrance.  Not sure but I have a feeling this is where the tornado's one fatality may have occurred and it may have been the salt crane/conveyer operator.

I could see group's of ‘Forensic’ inspectors moving around the damaged areas with clipboards & cameras surveying the scene and probably working on clean up, repair & rebuilding plans.  Some workers were atop one of the main elevator shaft buildings working in conjunction with a large crane.  I could hear chain saws somewhere on the property as well.  Chunks of storm related Styrofoam floated lazily in the channel between the lake and inner harbour.  It was a beautiful sunny morning and hard to imagine a man had just lost his life in a terrible storm here just a few days ago.

THE FELLOWS IN THE BLACK UNIFORMS HAD THE WORD ‘FORENSICS’ WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF THEM

From the harbour area I drove up the steep hill towards the center of town which I knew was still cordoned off.  Made my way around some back streets weaving in and around the many service trucks parked on lawns, in driveways and on the streets.  Found a quiet spot on a damaged street and parked the Jeep out of everybody's way.  Tree cutters, electrician vans, restoration trailers, large service trucks with overhead cranes repairing power lines were everywhere.  A few locals on the sidewalks taking photos but most personnel were workers with hard hats and orange collared traffic type vests.  Everybody was busy and no one took notice of a fella walking around taking a bunch of photos.

Police cruisers blocked every street about a block back from the center of town & streets were sealed off with yellow police tape.  Nobody was allowed onto what is commonly referred to as, 'the Square.'  Goderich is built like a large wagon wheel with the towns Courthouse in the center as the hub.  A four lane ring road surrounds the courthouse with streets running off like spokes on a wheel.  There is nothing square about the roundness of design but it is called, 'The Square' anyway.

One of the first totally destroyed buildings I came to on my walk about had been an optical building that I was familiar with from having dropped Seniors off there over the years when I drove a mobility van.  This building was totally smashed to the ground with numerous tarpaulins covering the office machines and optical stock inside.  A police cruiser parked only a few yards away had an officer inside keeping a wary eye on the guy with the cameras only a few feet from the crumpled walls & merchandise inside.

THIS OPTICIANS BUILDING IS TOTALLY DESTROYED
Damage was everywhere as I made my way from block to block slowly circumventing the entire downtown core.  A tree uprooted here, a crushed pick up truck there.  Roofs tumbled into the streets, piles of debris piled along curbs on the roadways.  Broken windows everywhere with homes missing roof parts, collapsed porches and sections of walls.  I think one of the eeriest sites was a Tim Horton's coffee shop about a block south of the Square......with an empty parking lot!!  Now there is something I thought I would never see in my life time.  Aside from a large cleaned up tree that had come down in their drive-thru, the building looked fine.  It's possible that area of town still does not have power.  Two 'Johnny-On-The-Spots' sat in one corner of the parking lot & one was occupied as I took the photo.

One of the most devastated buildings I was able to get close to was the United Church right on Victoria street which is on the west side of number 21 highway running north/south through the city of Goderich.  The winds just got inside that Church & blew large chunks of the walls out & roof off.  I took a lot of photos here.  Reminded me of bomb damage we have all seen in film footage from London England during the second World War.   If winds can do that kind of damage to solid brick structures one can easily understand the hazards of living in a mobile home Park.

My long circular walk around the entire outside perimeter of the town's 'Square' took me nearly an hour and a half to get back to the Jeep.  I was aware of two distinctive opposites on that walk.  All the side streets were abuzz with work crews and the sounds of chain saws and moving vehicles, but as I reached any one of the nearly dozen streets leading to the city's core (The Square) I was immediately aware of the obvious silence at the end of the streets.  I could see the large prominent solid looking courthouse at the hub of the Square standing quiet with no activity going on.  That area has been cleared and it reminded me of a huge stonely silent war memorial you see towering over a war cemetery.

GODERICH’S STEADFAST AND SOLID COURT HOUSE IN THE ‘SQUARE’ SURVIVED THE TORNADO’S RAVAGES
I took a total of 192 photos this morning so when I have all those photos edited I will put together a Smug Mug photo album of the Goderich tornado damage.  Might have that done later tonight or sometime tomorrow.  I will link it to the blog. (ended up with 171 usable photos)

McDonald's, in the south end of Goderich is alive & well so I stopped in for an Angus Swiss & Mushroom burger before heading home.  I had worked myself up quite an appetite so the burger tasted great.  I was home by noon and 20 minutes later was snoozed out in my recliner with a big happy and slurpy mutt on my lap.

Shortly after that I took the furry speedball on her first half hour trail walk since her surgery one week ago today in Zurich.  She was sooooo happy to be out again heading in half a dozen different directions all at the same time.  She stampeded a herd of birds up into the trees & terrorized another rapidly escaping Butterfly.  It is just so nice to see a dog sooooo consistently happy.

Two new Blog Followers to welcome tonight.  DEB HILLENIUS  joins us as well as Mike LaFoley as numbers 323 & 324 on our Blog Follower’s list.  Welcome aboard folks & thanks for taking an interest in the Bayfield Bunch.  Much appreciated:))

THE LAST PARAGRAPH:  As a rule, most of of us live in a relatively safe & secure environment but I was reminded today amidst the debris of Goderich Ontario just how that security can be destroyed in an instant & our future immediately re-routed.DSC_0078

GROANER'S CORNER:((  Different ways of looking at something.....Two shoe salespeople were sent to Africa to open up new markets. Three days after arriving, one salesperson called the office and said, "I'm returning on the next flight. Can't sell shoes here. Everybody goes barefoot."
At the same time the other salesperson sent an email to the factory, saying "The prospects are unlimited. Nobody wears shoes here!"

NO STORM DAMAGE IN OUR AREA

DSC_0059

A FEW PHOTOS FROM AROUND THE GODERICH AIRPORT A COUPLE DAYS AGO…..THIS IS ALSO THE HOME OF SKY HARBOUR AIRCRAFT

We had ourselves an overcast and pleasantly cooler 66F day.  So nice to be rid of that miserable humidity.  We haven't heard of Wednesday night's storms leaving any damage behind in our area although it was reported a twister was spotted south of Bayfield.  I think the storms may have intensified as they moved inland because the local news channels reported trees and power lines down about 60 to a 100 miles east of us.  I had just said in Tuesday's blog that Tornado's are rare in these parts & here we had tornado weather twice in 4 days.

Didn't make it up to  GODERICH yet but I'm kind of thinking Friday or Saturday morning.  Far as I know the downtown is still sealed off.  Queen Elizabeth once called called Goderich the prettiest town in Canada.  I wonder what she would think of it now….

Once again, for anyone interested in what's happening in the daily night sky, I find this site at EARTHSKY a straight forward & easy to understand site.  Today it features another one of my favourite constellations, Orion The Hunter.  Orion, now visible in the pre-dawn Southeastern sky will soon be visible in the night sky all winter as it slowly travels east to west along the southern hemisphere.  If you have a good set of binoculars try finding the cluster of stars just below Orion's belt knows as the Orion Nebula which is also visible if you have good vision.

Finally figured out why my blog would not publish Wednesday night.  I had added, 'Tornado Warnings.....!!' in my 'Category' section,   Apparently Blogger would not accept the exclamation marks & series of periods.  Try as I may I could not delete the mistake so I tried 'copy & pasting' the whole post into a new Live Writer draft & that worked.   Just something to keep in mind if your adding categories to your posts.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S STORM CAST AN EERIE GLOW

DSC_0012

Nice psychological lift today as I made the first of what will be many trips to the Motor Home over the next 7 weeks loading it up for our trip to the southwest in mid October.  Yes, I know it's waaaay early to be loading up but that's why I used the word, psychological:))  Other than heading for the 4 Corners area of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona after leaving Bayfield we have no idea where we will be headed after that but for sure we want to check out new areas where we have never been before.  And, one of our big preferences this year is warmer temperatures.   As much as we have enjoyed South-eastern Arizona over the past few years we would sure like to find somewhere with warmer nights.  Many nights we would be colder in the high desert than the folks right here back home in winter time Bayfield.  We're still awaiting word from the Ranch folks near McNeil Az. as to whether they will need us this winter or not, and for how long and when.

DSC_0011

As any Snow Birder knows there is literally a mountain of things to be done and taken care of before leaving on a 5 or 6 month winter trip.  Travel insurance to be arranged, cell phone, television and internet plans to be re-activated for the States.  Motor Home insurance and Emergency Road Services to be re-newed.  Telephone calls have to be made and emails have to be sent.  It is a huge amount of organizing that requires a lot of time and patience.  Kelly handles all that stuff in stride and lucky for us she does.  Having to sit on the end of a telephone line pressing 1 for English or 6 for a Department and then ending up with someone from India on the line would do me in within seconds and I would end up spinning off screaming into outer space somewhere!!  We're fortunate in one aspect in that we do not have to plan and make reservations for a string of RV Parks for the winter.  Can't imagine having to do that.

DSC_0023

We still have not had to put the big plastic head cone back on the Pheebster.  She has been really good at not bothering her stitches.  Just one more day before resuming her morning speedball walks and 6 more days before the tummy and leg stitches come out.   Right now she is totally back to normal and rarin to rip.

 DSC_0038

KELLY HAD BEEN TALKING TO THE OWNER OF DEER PARK LODGE WHO SAID THE POWER WAS OUT IN BAYFIELD AND SHE HAD NO LIGHTS  SO ON THE WAY PAST FROM THE SUNSET PHOTOS I THREW A LITTLE CAMERA FLASH AT HER HOUSE TO LIGHTEN THINGS UP A BIT:))

THE LAST PARAGRAPH:   Been a couple days since taking a blog reading break but can feel I am already getting a little shaky as withdrawal symptoms are making themselves felt.  What and how are people doing, where are they, where have they been and where are they going.  At some point I am going to have some catching up to do but for right now I just needed a little change of pace & perspective.

GROANER'S CORNER:((  A local policeman had just finished his shift one cold November evening and was at home with his wife.
"You just won't believe what happened this evening , in all my years on the force I've never seen anything like it."
"Oh yes dear, what happened ?"
"I came across two guys down by the canal, one of them was drinking battery acid and the other was eating fireworks."
"Drinking battery acid and eating fireworks!! What did you do with them ?"
"Oh that was easy, I charged one and let the other off."

TORNADO WARNINGS!! WIND, RAIN & HAIL….ANOTHER CLOSE CALL!!

DSC_0001_thumb1
TOOK THIS PHOTO MOMENTS BEFORE BEING CAUGHT IN A RAIN SQUALL
Figured I would try working on changing-up my morning routine a bit and see if I could get myself onto another track other than my hours long repetitive computer routine each and every morning. It is no easy feat to break with the long standing morning blog reading habit that I have had for the past 5 years but feel it is time to attempt a few changes.

The weatherman on Tuesday called for severe weather in our area Wednesday but other than some moderate rain and wind in the morning all was quiet.  Instead of a predicted cold front arriving the weather turned in the opposite direction & became hot & humid. (I wrote that paragraph earlier in the day)

Never made it up to Goderich this morning and instead, Kelly, myself and the Pheebs headed off to visit my Uncle Harry at the Care Facility in Mitchell, Ontario.  We have not put the cone back on the Pheebster so we took her along to keep an eye on her.  Uncle Harry seemed a bit better than the last couple of times we saw him and he was happy to see Pheebe again.

On the way home we heard there was a 'Tornado Watch' out for our area.  That didn't surprise me because of how the humidity had quickly built up during the day and the fact there was a mass of colder air up in Northwest Ontario moving our way.  With all the trees around our place we have no view of the sky so we kept a close eye on our computer's 'real time' radar site monitoring any storm cells heading our way across Lake Huron.   I wonder how many area people remember we have the DOUGLAS POINT NUCLEAR POWER GENERATING STATION  just a short 50 something miles straight north of us sitting right on the shores of Lake Huron.  I wonder what a direct hit on that facility by a tornado would do……………hmmmm, not good!!
Our weather trouble quickly became serious around 6 o’clock tonight when the sky’s darkened & thunder rolled in.  Weather map showed storm cells out over the lake quickly heading our way.  Jumped in the Jeep and headed for a vantage point on the cliffs above the lake in Bayfield hoping for some spectacular storm clouds approaching.   But,  aside from one photo before the sky's darkened, the clouds quickly turned a dark gray and I was caught in a rain squall.  Only time I have ever got my cameras wet and I was only about a hundred yards from the Jeep.  By the time I got back home about 5 minutes later the rain was pretty heavy.  Kelly was monitoring the television weather channel and on our screen the Tornado ‘watch had gone to a ‘warning’ and we could see heavy storm cells moving in all around us.  I zipped outside and moved my Motorcycle over, grabbed a hold of the utility trailer and pulled it out into the driveway.   Quickly drove the Jeep into the carport.  I was worried about hail!!
DSC_0010_thumbDSC_0011_thumbDSC_0012_thumbDSC_0013_thumbDSC_0014_thumb
THESE WERE THE WARNING BANNERS BEING FLASHED AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR TV SCREEN
The only place we have to go in case of an emergency is the basement of our Park’s clubhouse just up the street but we elected to sit tight.  News flashes were coming in fast to the weather channel with a funnel cloud spotted about 20 miles north of us.  Goderich looked like it could be in trouble again.  People in Sarnia/Port Huron were being warned to get inside!!  Right now at 7:41 p.m. hail has just started but checking the ‘real time’ weather site I see this cell should just about be passed us.  Kelly said we just lost the internet but amazingly, we have not lost our power.  7:45 & the light hail shower has stopped and sky’s have brightened.  Checking weather map again I see we are in the clear unless another storm cell comes in off the lake.  Internet is OK again but we just heard all the power is out in Bayfield.  Sky has turned a scary yellow but weather site is not showing any more storm cells near us.
DSC_0015_thumb1
Whewwwwww, that was a close one……………but, it was an exciting close one.  We’ll monitor the local news now & see if indeed there were any tornados on the ground or any damage done anywhere.  The towns of Clinton, Seaforth, Mitchell & the city of Stratford are now in the storm’s path as I type this.
DSC_0007_thumb1
9 P.M.  Figured with a yellow sky there might be a nice sunset so zipped back into Bayfield for some more photos.  I will have a few of those for Thursday night’s post.
 DSC_0005_thumb1
THE LAST PARAGRAPH:  I am one of those people who likes storms and always find them exciting.  I used to love going out years ago in the old 35mm days and try to photograph lightning.  If I ever get any of my thousands of slides into a digital format I will have to dig out a few of my lightning pics.    But then again, I like most things that are different…..except computer software & program changes of course.  We are still struggling with our email address books and for any of the folks on my ‘Jokes Folks’ list that haven’t received any ‘Jokes’ lately, that is why……………………..

JUST MADE IT IN TIME FOR A FEW SUNSET PICS  WHICH I WILL INCLUDE IN THURSDAY’S POST
