AUNT JEAN DOES TOMBSTONE

DSC_0003
I think it was the least cold morning since we have been here and what a nice change that was from the usual gripping cold desert air.
DSC_0001
Kelly talked with the Nurse Practitioner from the Tucson hospital this morning. She relayed and explained what the medical report meant after conferring with the Urologist.  Bottom line……continue our travels but get the ball rolling for follow up tests regarding kidney and liver cysts as soon as we get back to Canada.  Regarding the kidney stones….same advice.  Enjoy our travels and keep our fingers crossed the big stone doesn’t move until we can get home and deal with it.  Had we panicked and ran home 3 weeks ago we would now be sitting there in the rotten weather looking out the window on a cold gray landscape.  Maybe these words will come back to bite me but in the meantime we have more country to see down here and more adventures to pursue.  In one week’s time we will have the big wheels rolling westward-ho once again.

TOMBSTONE REFLECTIONS
One of the places on Jean’s list to see was Tombstone so we saddled up and rode over there about 11 a.m.  The town was beginning to stir with Stagecoach rides and wild west characters making their way about on the main street.  Kelly asked a Stage driver where the best place to eat in town was and he steered us to the CRYSTAL PALACE SALOON.
DSC_0009
CHECKING THE CRYSTAL PALACE’S MENU
The ladies both had pulled Pork but I had a Six Shooter for lunch.  Anywhere but Tombstone the Six Shooter is commonly known as a BLT.  You know, lettuce bacon, etc.  Food was good but I had made the mistake of eating a big peanut butter and honey sandwich before we left so I wasn’t as hungry as I should have been.

A BIG OLD BAR FROM THE MID 1800’S
Kelly’s cell phone rang while we were just leaving the Crystal Palace & it was our insurance company calling to see how we were making out with my medical problem.   Sounds like we have a pile of paper work headed our way.
DSC_0013 DSC_0017
 DSC_0014
IT WAS A LOOOOONG PHONE CALL
We browsed around on the wooden boardwalks soaking up the town’s ambience and walking the full length of Tombstone’s famous Allen street.  Despite the commercial slant to the town, it is still Tombstone where a memorable part of the old wild west was played out.  The Earp Brothers walked the very streets we did today and entered and exited some of the very same buildings.  Say what you will about modern day Tombstone.   The history is still there and hopefully will remain there forever.

WONDER IF JEAN WAS THINKING OF PICKING UP SOME AMMO
We were back at the Ranch by 2.  The wind had picked up significantly buffeting the coach a bit.  But, it wasn’t cold.  Jean likes the passenger seat in our rig because it reclines.  With the sun streaming in the big windshield making the coach toasty warm Jean wasn’t long in reclining the comfy seat for a big afternoon Siesta.  With all that warmth beaming in I’ll bet she was dreaming of sunny warm Florida in no time.

The Last Paragraph: Might want to have a look at Sue’s post over at BIG DAWG AND FREEWAY.  Always enjoy a post with substance to it.  A post that comes from the heart.  If you are talking or writing to me with thoughts and feelings, then I am understanding you with the same…..thoughts and feelings.

BACK TO THE LAZY W RANCH…. ONE MORE TIME

DSC_0023
SAD, KNOWING THIS LITTLE RANCH WILL PROBABLY END UP LIKE SO MANY OTHERS IN THE VALLEY…NEGLECTED AND DETERIORATING
(Saturday morning...just corrected the title from from Flying W Ranch to Lazy W Ranch.....don't know why I always get that mixed up)

My Aunt Jean was the independent one in a family of 3 Brothers and 1 Sister. (my Mother).  Jean and & I have often compared our similarities.  Two brothers spent time overseas in England during the war but it was Jean who had the adventurist spirit striking out on her own for Florida back in 1964.  At an early age she had already had enough of Canadian winters and rather than complain about it for the rest of her life she took the bull by the horns and moved, lock stock and barrel to Sarasota Florida.  I have always admired that kind of spunk in my Aunt Jean.  By the way, a reader asked how my Uncle Harry is doing and he is holding his own at the care facility.
IMG_3060
Coming from a Canadian banking background and pursuing that in the States, Jean completely switched careers mid stream finally leaving the banking world behind.  She put herself through several difficult years of nursing studies while working at several Doctor’s offices.  At the age of 51 she succeeded in passing her final exams to become a full time registered nurse and worked in area Sarasota hospitals right up until 1993.  A hardworking and independent lady indeed.  Yep, that’s my Aunt Jean:))
IMG_3053
Solved a small mystery this morning.  When Kelly went to bed last night she noticed one of her slippers missing.  Of course we had an immediate suspect but no slipper was to be found, until the morning sun came up that is.   There, outside the Motorhome about 40 feet away was the slipper sitting beside a recently dug hole in the ground awaiting burial.  When all 4 furry suspects were questioned it was Pheebs who sat there with the biggest guilty look on her face.  Mystery solved. And, no damage to the missing slipper:))
DSC_0001
A relaxing morning around the Ranch.  Kelly worked the phones making arrangements for my Renal Ultra-Sound results to be faxed to the Library in McNeal.  Page one did make it to the Elfrida Library but due to a problem with the fax machine, we had to pick up page two of the fax at Bob’s Hardware Store in town.  Quite a round about way to receive a serious medical report.  Um, quite a way to way to hear about one’s own innards too I may add.

Ranch owner Jeanie emailed us this morning saying we could use their pick-up truck for sight seeing.  Much more room than the Jeep.  Thought that was very thoughtful of Jeanie & Ray to let us use their truck.  We needed a big bag of birdseed so that worked out perfectly.  Aunt Jean, Kelly, Pheebs, Motor and myself all headed for Elfrida’s High Lonesome store & picked up a 50 pound bag of seeds.
A stop at the Library to pick up my test results and then we were off up to the Lazy W Ranch.  Jean had wanted to see it so we made our way up the ever bumpity road.
DSC_0025 DSC_0016
After arriving at the Ranch we noticed something this time that we had missed before.  Two rocks with writing on them at the northern corner of the front porch.  A closer inspection of the rocks revealed something and many fellow RV Bloggers will recognize the names on these rocks:))  The Lazy W looked exactly the same as the last time there a few weeks ago and I suspect it will sit here quietly looking basically the same for years to come.

KELLY SPOTS THESE ROCKS IN THE CORNER OF THE PORCH
A stop at the local McNeal Post Office netted us a special package today.  And, coincidentally that package had a connection to one of the lettered rocks at the Lazy W.   Kelly has always liked the socks that Karen at SMALL HOUSE....BIG BACKYARD makes so ordered herself up a few pair.  Karen’s package arrived today with Kelly’s socks plus an additional gifted pair for both us complete with a great Christmas card and festive wrapping.  It was the closest we came to Christmas this year as we opened our individually wrapped packages:))  Thank you so much for the socks Karen.  They are the grooviest socks I have ever had.  And thanks for sending a little Christmas our way.  Kelly put on a pair of socks right away and strutted them around all day:))

The Last Paragraph:  We didn’t receive the phone call from the Tucson hospital we were hoping for today but we did receive the written report.  There was a lot in the report as Kelly read it aloud while we were driving.  Without the Doctors professional opinion though, we are still in the dark as to what it all means.

AUNT JEAN FLIES INTO TUCSON FROM TAMPA FLORIDA:))

DSC_0012

HEADING BACK FROM THE TUCSON AIRPORT LATER THIS AFTERNOON

Another early start to the day.  I was up at 3 a.m. to let Pheebs and Pearce out for a winkle.  Beautiful night with a bright setting moon in the west.  Orion was close behind.  In the East were the beginnings of an early Spring sky with Libra leading the pack.  In another 4 to 5 months this same morning Spring sky will be the early evening Spring Sky.  Confusing??  Of course it is.  It is the wonderment of the Universe.

DSC_0001

LITTLE MOTOR LOOKED SO LONELY WHEN WE CLOSED THE GATE BEFORE HEADING TO TUCSON

Had ourselves a busy morning getting things spiffed up and organized for the arrival of my Aunt Jean from Florida today.  I even washed the Jeep.  Imagine that!!  Shiny shiny sparkle sparkle.  I knew by the time we reached the paved road a half mile away it would be all dusty dusty groovy groovy again:))

Another bonus weather day as we headed out for the Tucson Intl Airport about 12:30 taking a popular scenic route through Sonoita.  Underestimated the length of time that route added to the trip and just made it into the Airport as Aunt Jean’s flight was landing.  Being unfamiliar with the Airport it took us a bit of scrambling to get into the right terminal but we made it to the waiting area about 20 minutes before Jean came down the escalator.

DSC_0003

So great to see her because it was the summer of 09 when we last said goodbye back in Canada.  Aunt Jean is my Uncle Harry’s Sister.  Hugs all around and we were out the door to walk the short distance to the Jeep.  Tucson has a nice simple little Airport.

COUPLE OF PHOTOS OUTSIDE OF THE TERMINAL

Within days of buying the Jeep about a year and a half ago we hauled the small back seat out of it. Today Kelly had to build herself a comfortable nest of pillows to sit on for the trip home.  Not a lot of room back there but luckily Aunt Jean only brought a travel bag along bag with her.  Jeeps are not known for their spacious storage capacity.  We took the same Sonita scenic route home through the mountains but it just seemed to take forever to get back to the Ranch.  Nice route but we won’t be using it for Tucson trips any more.

JEAN MEETS THE PHEEBS >>>

Made it back to the Ranch about half an hour before the sun dipped behind the Mule Mountains.  When we had left earlier in the day Pheebe had gone and laid down near the gate under a Pine tree with her sad little head on the ground.  We think she stayed there for the whole length of time we were away because she came running from the direction of that tree when we pulled up to the gate.

Kelly head made scalloped potatoes with ham before we left and not long after walking into the Ranch house we were all hungrily chowing down.  So great to have Jean here with us for a week.  She will be sleeping in the Ranch house with Charlie the Cat for company.  She bonded right away with Pearce and Gleeson as well.  And, of course the Pheebs.  And, little Motor remembered Aunt Jean.

KELLY INTRODUCES JEAN TO  GLEESON

Jean has an interested in the starry night skies too so it didn’t take the two of us long to slip outside and have us a look at the night sky.  The brightness of a three quarter moon blotted out many of the stars but we were able to quickly find Orion, Jean’s favorite constellation.

It was a long day for all of us and I was having trouble staying awake so we all called it a day about 7 P.M.  I think tomorrow will just be a relaxing day around the Ranch for all of us.  I think we’ll just sit outside and soak up the warm Arizona sunshine and play with the dogs:))

SHE TURNED TO ME AND SAID “YOU ARE A SPECIAL CASE”

DSC_0002

Even the chickens weren't quite awake yet when I showed up to feed them. It was an early start we had to the day and I was out before the sun cleared the Pedregosa Mountains to our East. Gathered up a swatch of hay for the donkeys and fed Gleeson, Pearce, and Charlie the Cat. Nice hot shower, waved bye bye to Motor and Pheebs on the other side of the locked gate and we headed ourselves off to Tucson.

Nice morning drive again as we slipped straight up the Sulphur Springs Valley through Benson to I-10. Quick stop at McDonald’s & then pedal to the metal for the University of Arizona hospital. Light traffic again and no problem finding the hospital on Ajo Way just a block east of I-10.

No glitches this time and all the paperwork was in order as we checked in at the outpatient registration desk.  Because we arrived for my appointment early, we were taken in early and 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment time of 11 o’clock I was stretched out on a bed in a darkened room with my shirt off laying on my left side.

IMG_1478

ARRIVING EARLY FOR MY APPOINTMENT THIS MORNING

An ultra-sound technician lady was at my side sitting in front of what looked like a spaceship computer control board.  Her left hand deftly flitted over a panel of buttons & keys while her right hand skillfully manipulated what felt like a warm computer mouse around my lower abdomen in the kidney area.  Constantly I heard the words, “take a deep breath” zzzzz “ok, you can breath”.  “Take a deep breath” zzzzz “ok, you can breath”.  This went on for a very long time as she slowly moved that mouse from spot to spot.  I could hear computer noises and dingle sounds coming from the spaceship control panel.

IMG_1479

WAITING TO BE CALLED FOR MY RENAL ULTRA-SOUND

The procedure seemed to take a long  time and the hardest part was trying to stay awake.  Imagine having someone slowly massaging your lower abdomen and softly repeating, “take a deep breath” zzzzz “ok, you can breath now”.

Next, I was on my back as she did my bladder area which was followed by me rolling onto my right side while she next spent a long time on my other kidney.  “Take a deep breath” zzzzz “ok, you can breath”.  The whole procedure took about half an hour but at last she was done.  I wasn’t prepared for what the technician told me next.

IMG_1480

NOPE, I AIN’T SCARED OF NO DARNED HOSPITAL STUFF!!

Her words to me were, “I’m sorry this took so long but you have a lot of things in there.”  She then looked me directly in the eye and said, “you are a special case.”  She repeated that phrase twice more before her cell phone rang.  She smiled and motioned me towards the door.  As I left that room I couldn’t help but get the feeling that maybe my ultra-sound was unlike most others she was accustomed to seeing.  Her words, “you are a special case” echoed around in my mind.

While I was having the procedure done Kelly had been busy.  She had arranged for a CD to be made of my ultra-sound results.  We waited maybe 20 minutes until that info had been uploaded and with CD in hand we headed the short distance to where another building’s Urologist department was located.  Kelly wanted to make doubly doubly sure there would be no slip ups in us getting Dr. Funk’s full report on today’s results.  We want to be armed with every shred of documentation we can carry before heading back to Ontario and contacting my Doctor in a few months.  The receptionist remembered us from a couple weeks ago and assured us the complete written report could be mailed to us in NcNeal because we are hoping we do not have to drive all the way back to Tucson again.  Receptionist also assured us Doctor Funk would phone us either Friday or Monday with the results.

It was 5 minutes to noon when we walked out of the hospital into the warming rays of the big Arizona sun.  How nice to be outside in the fresh air again.  Minutes later we rolled back up onto I-10 heading south out of Tucson.  We were on a mission.  We had a Shreddies delivery to make.  Say, have I told you how much I love these big Arizona mountains.

OK, so what the big darn heck are Shreddies??  Shreddies are a breakfast cereal which are apparently only available in Canada.  Last fall we received an email from a reader and fellow RV Blogger who noticed we were heading their way on our trip to southeast Arizona.    Americans, Grant and Kathy Webb from BIRDING RVERS wondered if we could bring them some boxes of Shreddies from Canada.  They love Shreddies but can’t get them here in the States.  Yep, no problem.

DSC_0010

GRANT AND KATHY WEBB FROM THE RVING BIRDERS

With Grant’s directions we found the birding folks in the staff area of the KARTCHNER CAVERNS about 8 miles south of Benson Arizona.  They have just begun a two month stint at the Caverns as volunteers helping out with activities in the large Caverns.  You can read about our trip to Kartchner Caverns here at, SILVER CITY TO THE KARTCHNER CAVERNS  and INTO THE CAVERN AND OFF TO A MONASTERY.

DSC_0009

Always nice to meet fellow RVing Bloggers so we all had ourselves a good chin wag for about an hour.  We didn’t want to hold the folks up too long because we knew they were anxious to get inside and rip into a big fresh new box of Shreddies……Yum:))

DSC_0003

DSC_0007 DSC_0006

From the Kartchner Caverns we didn’t waste any time ski-daddling ourselves straight south down highway 90 through Huachuca City and Sierra Vista.  We still had groceries to get and we were very anxious to get home and see the doggy guys.

Stopped into the San Jose part of Bisbee for groceries at my favorite little Safeway grocery store.  Seems we never get out of grocery stores anymore for under a hundred dollars.  Didn’t take us long to go through our grocery list and make fast tracks for home.

Pheebs came racing out of the Motorhome and up to the gate about 300 miles an hour.  Sure is a good thing her tail is fastened on securely because if not it would have flown off into outer space a long long time ago.

Pearce ran out to meet us as well but Motor and Gleeson, being their usual Coach Potato selves were sound asleep in the rig when we drove up.  It’s quite a bunch of sleepy heads we got here….including me.  Tomorrow we head back to Tucson, but this time….to the Airport:))

The Last Paragraph:  Have to say again how fortunate I am in having the efficient and caring person beside me that I do.  I never would have thought of getting that scan result CD today or going to the Urologist’s office and doubly doubly checking on everything.  Typically, when I walked out of that Ultra-Sound room this morning my priority would have been to get out of that hospital area, head that Jeep out into the desert somewhere and see if I could find me some good Saguaro photos.  I sometimes have a habit of not taking things to seriously……..

"Doctor, My husband has this problem. Almost every night now he's dreaming he's a refrigerator!"
"My dear, that is not really a problem! A lot of people dream that they are somebody or something unusual..."

A LAST VISIT TO THE PAWS AND HOOVES RANCH

DSC_0099
IT IS A NICE SPOT WE ALWAYS HAVE HERE AT JEANIE AND RAY’S RANCH
A better night’s sleep chased my Monday’s Zombie like state into history and I started Tuesday off feeling energized again.
DSC_0079
The first year at the Ranch we met some of Jeanie and Ray’s good friends.  Two of those folks were the Mother and daughter team of Rosanna and Carol from the PAWS AND HOOVES RANCH just up the Valley about half an hour.  Last time we saw them was a year ago when we did a couple Jeep tours  together along with Jeanie and Ray.  You can see those 2 Jeep tours at FROM THE COCHISE STRONGHOLD TO THE DRAGOON SPRINGS...JEEPING ALL THE WAY:)) and JEEP RUN TO THE GATES OF MULESHOE RANCH.  Today we headed for the Paws and Hooves Ranch near Sunizona, Arizona.  It will likely be our last time visiting Rosanna & Carol at their Ranch, and there is a reason for that.

ROSANNA AND HER MOTHER CAROL
Rosanna bought a cute little house and property in Placerville California a short while ago and they have just listed their 10 acre Paws & Hooves Ranch for sale here in the Sulphur Springs Valley.  The Gals are hoping to make their move to Placerville in February.  Rosanna and her Mother Carol are just about two of the friendliest people you could ever meet.  Had ourselves a great 3 hour visit catching up on a lot of things and talking about future plans.  Don’t know if we’ll ever make it to Placerville east of Sacramento but if we do we’ll be sure to look up our good friends again from the old Paws and Hooves Ranch.

THIS IS PAWS AND HOOVES LEAD RANCH HAND...'TOOTIE-TWO'
Today marks a beginning series of busy days for us over the next little while.  We still have some people to see and some Shreddies to deliver.  We have been busy trying to figure out when we can fit everything in.  It is our own fault that we have been lax in our social visiting again.
DSC_0081
Wednesday morning we head for the University of Arizona hospital.  Thursday we will head for the Tucson International Airport to pick up my Aunt Jean who is flying in from Florida to spend a week with us here at the Ranch.  Aunt Jean will be here for a week so we will be out and about showing Jean many of the area’s sites.  That will be great because we will get to see some of our old favorite spots again.

ANOTHER PERFECT ARIZONA WEATHER DAY:))

DSC_0032

THESE TWO BEST PALS ARE SURE GOING TO MISS EACH OTHER WHEN WE LEAVE IN A FEW WEEKS

I am generally up around 4 a.m. every morning and it is an enjoyably quiet time of day for me.  With the computer on my lap I particularly like looking around and seeing all the doggy guys sound asleep in their own little spots.  Pheebs on my bed beside me.  Motor on Kelly’s chair with her toys, Pearce on a doggy bed in the far corner of our slide and Gleeson stretched out on the living room floor near the steps.  They are a happy contented bunch of snoozy heads and it warms my heart to see that.

DSC_0025-1

Guess I got this Reno/Renal procedure thing mixed up again in Sunday’s post.  It’s the Renal Ultra-Sound procedure I am hoping to have done Wednesday.  The Reno gram one is the procedure that injects a radioactive tracer into the renal system.  Not recommended for big cry babies like me.

Had an email question wondering if I ask people’s permission before taking their photos.  My answer to that is ‘no’ because doing so automatically makes it a ‘posed’ photo and I have no interest in that type of photography.  I enjoy candidly catching people just being their natural selves.  In April last year I was asked by another reader about my thoughts on taking candid photos of people.  You can read my opinion about that in a post entitled MY TAKE ON CANDID PHOTOGRAPHY My thoughts begin with the 4th paragraph down.

DSC_0023

Not too often I get through a day without taking a photo of something but today was one of those days.  Woke up at 3 a.m. & spent the rest of the the day trying to remain in the world of consciousness.  Just kinda hid under my cowboy hat all day.  Today’s pics were taken Sunday morning.

Forgot to mention in last night’s post that we plan to be back at the Ranch near the end of February for a few weeks.  Those plans are still a bit up in the air but we are working on them.

DSC_0026

Our Florida thoughts have kinda drifted out to sea and we have swung our thoughts and attention back into the Southwest.  Oh tis a confusing life the Bayfield Bunch lives at times but with the flashes of excitement we occasionally get ourselves into it keeps the boredom blues away.  We always seem to have an iron or two in the fire for the future.  And, that keeps us on our toes and thinking.  Maybe next week it will occur to us to buy a Hippopotamus farm:))

The Last Paragraph:  Have you ever noticed I talk too much.  I notice it all the time.  Well, on the computer I do anyway.  Whenever I sit down with my laptop I just seem compelled to blabber myself out onto the keyboard regardless of what pops into my mind.  Well, to be honest….not everything.  Gotta show some discretion….right:))
