OHHH MY ACHING JOINTS & MUSCLES….IT MUST BE SPRING CLEAN UP TIME

DSC_0020

PRIMROSE

Had my fingers crossed when I went to bed Wednesday night hoping I could sleep in until at least 6 this morning.  But, it was not to be & I was up shortly after 3 a.m.  It was OK though because all was quiet, nice soft ambient music on the stereo, my recliner welcomed me & I was able to do a bit of catching up with a few folks on my laptop.

PERIWINKLE

When I push back into my over comfortable cushy recliner at home I sometimes think to myself, 'why would I ever want to leave here & go anywhere else'.  It's a very real thought & while sitting here I sometimes have no answer.  But, only sometimes:))

DSC_0012

A FEW LAWN ORNAMENTS AWAITING THEIR PLACE AROUND THE YARD

Transitioning does not become easier with age.  I am sitting with 3 remotes in my hand trying to remember again which one governs which function on our widescreen TV.  One remote handles our stereo which our TV can play through but which button turns that one one again.  I'm sure one remote has to do with HD & the cable company or something.  And which remote covers the turn signals.  Why can't I get the horn to work on the radio.  How come when I pull the cord the TV won't start.  Ohhhhhh, this transitioning is sooooo confusing.

DSC_0013

A TYPE OF MAGNOLIA

Pheebs is pretty happy to be home because she can sleep on my wider bed again.  And I am happy for the same reversal of reason.  She is having a few transition dilemmas herself running up & down the hall from room to room trying to get used to this bigger space.  And, she can't believe her luck at being able to go in & out our open patio door again.  And how nice to be outside in our fenced back yard without supervision.  Wow, it's a dog's life.

DSC_0023
AZALEA >>>

Because I enjoy being outside doing yard work this time of year it didn't take me long this morning to get my wheelbarrow revved up for the day's activities.  Many utility trailer loads of Pine needles to be raked up, branches to be loaded, etc.  Both the Jeep & Motorhome are in need of major clean-ups but that will have to wait.  Piney before shiney.  Plus I'm always a little reluctant to wash off all that groovy Arizona dust because it took me all winter just to get it on there & get that Jeep looking like a truly seasoned Jeep:))

DSC_0021

PRIMROSE

A cool crisp morning (ok, so it was cold) had us dressed warmly for our first family walk of the year on our Pine tree trail.  Nice to be out walking with a forest of trees all around again.  A pair of Mallard Ducks on the pond plus a couple of Canada Geese.  A few song birds in the trees but the big bird rush is still weeks away.  An absence of snow this year has really dropped the creek levels.  Am hoping we do not have water problems this summer.

DSC_0010

MARSH MARIGOLD >>>

Left the Motorhome alone & concentrated on the back yard clean up.  Had me a nice campfire going all morning burning up twigs, branches & pine needles.  Dragged out a few lawn ornaments & set up my night light timers.  I'll tackle the front yard pond in a few days.  Nice to be busy outside working those old tired muscles that have lain dormant all winter.  Pheebs was outside all the time helping me with every little thing too.  Came in about 11:15 & sat down for a few minutes to give my legs a break.  My few minutes was up when my eyes fluttered open about 1:30 this afternoon.  Needed that:))

DSC_0003

MORNING CAMPFIRE

Always takes Kelly much longer to empty the Motorhome of her stuff than it does me.  Suppose that's because she takes about 5 times more stuff with her each winter than I do.  Always feel so sorry for the rig after we get home because it sits out in the driveway all alone without the daily buzz of life it had going on inside for the past 5 months.  It is all but abandoned by it's RVing occupants.  Most all systems are shut down & put into hibernation.  The rig will wait patiently all summer long for the tell tale signs of activity.  Might be something loaded in a bin here, maybe some socks put in a drawer there.  But it will wait patiently.  It will wait to be reunited with it's traveling winter family once again in the coming Fall when it can happily be back on the road doing what it was designed to do best.  Travel.  ‘Still thy heart oh great Steed’

DSC_0016

ALL FLOWER PICS WERE TAKEN IN OUR GARDEN TODAY

Had a question about overnighting while on the road in places like Lowes, Cracker Barrel, Casinos, Walmart, etc.  Kelly had read an article a couple years ago about some places like Lowes & Cracker Barrel who welcome RV'ers.  I think most RV folks stopping for the night at a Cracker Barrel will either eat supper or breakfast there & Cracker Barrel knows that.  Many RV'ers stopping at Casinos will go in for a bite to eat, a look around, or a little game playing.  Walmart is a logical stop because they carry such a wide range of products.  Traveler's are always needing groceries & most, if not all Walmarts have an RV section.  You can pick up a new sewer hose right along with a bag of potatoes & a can of beans.  Many of them have a Subway or McDonalds in them plus bakery & deli.  A logical overnight spot for sure & I always enjoy Walmart stops because it's a welcome change of pace after a long day on the road.  Besides, there are some really weird looking shoppers in some of those stores & it's always good for a chuckle or two.

WE’RE HOME:))

JUST 30 FEET TO GO:))

AND I TAKE A PICTURE OF KELLY TAKING A PICTURE OF ME AS I PULL IN
This may be a short blog tonight....I am soooooo tired.  We crossed the border this morning at 8:10 without any problems.

COUPLE  PHOTOS FOR YOU GARY:))
Our day started around 3:30 a.m. to much cooler temperatures. But, not to worry, I am not complaining.  Can't remember exactly what time we rolled out of the Lowes parking lot but I do know we promptly got ourselves turned about somewhere heading off in the wrong direction.  This happens to us sometimes on these early pre-sunrise morning starts.
 IMG_1978
LOWES PARKING LOT IN LANSING MICHIGAN….OUR LAST NIGHT ON THE ROAD
The approach to the border was a bit of a construction nightmare & it was only by luck that we actually ended up at the correct spot.  Hope all that construction is completed by the time we have to travel that area again.  Crossing the Canada/US border is always major stress time whether coming or going.  We lucked out this year again & the young customs officer fellow opted not to drag us through the much feared meat grinder.  Can't even begin to tell you what a great relief it is to get across that border every year.

HANG IN THERE PHEEBS WE’LL BE HOME SOON
Next stop was Forrest Ontario for our annual first Tim Horton’s coffee of the year.  And of course the traditional photo.  And, I couldn’t help but notice that Timmy’s has finally smartened up about their cup sizes!!  Roll up the Rim is on & I won Kelly a free coffee.  Now how’s that for a caring husband eh.

OUR ANNUAL FIRST TIM HORTON’S COFFEE OF THE YEAR:))
Had us a nice clear sunny day as we rolled through our rural countryside heading home.  But, our usual great feeling of being on the last stretch of a long stressful trip was subdued.  We had one final stop before going home.  With tears in our eyes we carried our little Motormouse into the Vet's office in Zurich, Ontario this morning.  When we pick up her cremated remains next week Motor's long journey home will be over.
IMG_1981
A SAD STOP AT THE VET’S THIS MORNING

We rolled into Bayfield around 9:45. (time has been a bit of a blur today)  Pulled onto Clan Gregor Square & unhooked the Jeep.  Kelly led the way as we drove the final mile or so to our house.  Oh what a relief it is every year to finally pull into our driveway.   I always feel like a tired old warrior returning home after a long 6 months away fighting dragons in a far away land.  Pheebs was ecstatic to get out racing around as Kelly & I walked the property sizing up this year’s Spring clean-up.  Gonna be another big one but that’s OK because I don’t have to start from behind the eight ball shovelling snow first.

TOOK PHEEBS FOR A SPIN AROUND THE TRAIL
And, just as in previous years, I always make the same mistake by thinking I have to have the Motorhome all cleaned out in 20 minutes.  I get myself in such a stew carrying loads into the house.  Fired up my chain saw & began cutting up some old dead fallen trees, got myself a campfire going to burn the wood, took Pheebs for a spin around the trail, dusted off some bird feeders, got a couple loads of laundry in, hauled out some yard ornaments and………say, did I mention I was tired tonight.

YOU’VE HEARD OF SQUIRRELS STASHING NUTS AWAY, RIGHT?  WELL, WE MUST HAVE HAD A SQUIRREL ABOARD THE RIG THIS WINTER BECAUSE I FOUND ALL THIS STASHED UNDER MY BED
I’ll have the stats on mileage & the cost of gas for our trip tomorrow.  I also hope to get caught up on my blog reading shortly as well.  These past 4 or 5 days have been a whirlwind of activity, thoughts, feelings, and just about any other darn thing that was happening.   I am way behind on what my fellow Bloggers are doing and my reader correspondence has really slipped again.  Just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in some days.  Boy oh boy, with that thought in mind I just might sleep in till 6 tomorrow.

WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK….WE WILL BE HOME WEDNESDAY

DSC_0001
I ALWAYS NOTICE THE NICE LANDSCAPING AT ‘CRACKER BARREL’
We were parked only a matter of yards from large kitchen exhaust fans at a Cracker Barrel east of St. Louis Monday night.  Those fans ran steady & lulled me to sleep.  Guess it would explain why I dreamed of food all night.
 IMG_1955
FOGGY SUNRISE THROUGH A BUG SPLATTERED WINDSHIELD
Because we had done St Louis Missouri the night before we did not have to get up as early.  Slept in till 4:45 & rolled out of the parking lot & onto eastbound I-70 at 6 a.m.  How nice to have have all that humidity out of the air as we comfortably slid into cooler temps.
DSC_0010
PHEEBS LOVES THE PIT STOPS BEST
We were up & on the road too early for breakfast at the St. Louis Cracker Barrel so to sooth our guilty feelings we stopped for breakfast at the Terra Haute Cracker Barrel west of Indianapolis.  Think this was only the second time this whole winter that we ate at Cracker Barrel.  Grabbed me a few Spring photos outside their door.

SIGNS OF SPRING AT CRACKER BARREL
I was relieved to find out the majority of construction was finally completed on the Indianapolis northwest by-pass.  It has been closed for 3 or 4 years.  We managed to slip around Indy with a minimum of trouble.  Garmin Gertie (GPS) did win another argument with me though when we differed on direction of travel…...again!!

KELLY REVELS IN THE SOFT FEELING OF THICK GROWING GRASS
Had it in the back of my mind we could maybe make Lansing Michigan today.  And, that is where this post is coming from tonight.  We are in a Lowe’s Parking lot & it’s relatively quiet.  Maybe I will dream of hammer’s & saws instead of food tonight.
DSC_0005
JUST GOTTA LOVE THESE NORTHERN FORESTS
With today’s nearly 500 miles we are now within striking distance of being home Wednesday.  Just 190 miles to go.  Why the hurry?   Well, there are several reasons actually, with one of them being tornados.  It’s that time of year across the Midwest & the weather can turn on a dime at any time.  Monday’s severe & unusual humidity had me worried.  If we have good weather ahead I like to take advantage of that.  Several years ago we sat out bad weather for a couple days alongside a lake down in Texas.  Another time we ran into a bad storm in Hope Arkansas with tornado warnings south of us.  As I’m typing this tonight I see on the news where the Dallas/Fort Worth area has just been struck.  We sometimes travel just north of there.
----------
There are other reasons for skipping along home too.  We put no limitations on our travel days. We have no mileage limits or a damper on our hours of travel.  No reservations to be anywhere.  We play each day as it comes.  If we have a good tail wind, roads are bare & dry, traffic is behaving itself & the rigs running good then I see no reason to pull in somewhere & spend the majority of the day sitting around watching television, reading a book or chit chatting with strangers.  We also have a very precious cargo on board that I wanted to get home as soon as possible.
----------
Plus the fact, whether day or night, I have always been, & still am, one of those people who just likes to get behind the wheel & drive.  Just as enjoyable & exciting for me now at 68 as it was when I was 15 sneaking my Step-Dad’s car out of the garage for a spin now & again.
----------
I sometimes refer to our drives between Ontario & the American Southwest as being grueling.  Well, yes it certainly is grueling at times but overall I find it all part of the exciting Snow Bird lifestyle we live.  It’s that daily boring house routine stuff I have big trouble with.  Would I like to be a truck driver?  No…..can’t imagine that at all.
IMG_1973 IMG_1974
WE HAVE JUST ABOUT ENOUGH BUGS ON THE RIG NOW TO THICKEN TOMORROW’S SOUP:))
Shout out to the folks from MORIARITY New Mexico.  I do remember seeing the road sign for Moriarity as we were eastbound the other morning.  And to LYNDA & BOB who waved to us on I-40 near Amarillo Texas a couple days ago.  Yes, we saw you wildly waving & I did return some rather wild waves myself:))  Thanks for the recognition guys & safe travels on your journey across America.
----------
And a note about why we didn’t run our roof air Monday.  Just a few days ago with the generator running we turned our space heater on for 20 minutes & it blew our hard to find reset button knocking out critical systems such as our refrigerator.  Not being too technically minded we did not want to turn on the A/C & run the risk of having our power go out again.  With my luck that reset button wouldn’t reset…..and we couldn’t take the chance of our freezer defrosting!!.
----------
Kelly phoned our Vet today to say we will be bringing the little Motormouse in tomorrow.  The Vet in Zurich Ontario is right on our way home & it is the same Vet who made all the final arrangements for both Checkers & Max right from having them euthanized last April to the cremation process at an out of town facility.  Motor’s ashes will be placed in the same kind of nice Cedar Box as her two big Pals, Max & Checkers.  ‘Motormouse’ will be engraved on the top & we can pick her up next week & bring her home for the last time.  She will take her place alongside Checkers & Max.  And, in the Fall we will all be aboard traveling as a Bunch again.
----------
It is going to be a sad stop at the Vet’s carrying the little Motor in but on a happier note….this is the same Vet who phoned last August saying he knew of a dog needing a new home that we might be interested in.  We were…..and now we have the Pheebs.  And oh, what a Pheebs she is too:))))))))))))))))))))))

PHEEBS IS GOING TO LOVE GETTING HOME & BACK INTO THE PINE FOREST AGAIN
GROANER’S CORNER:((   Last week, Vicky, a distraught wife went to the local police station in Wigan, Lancashire, along with her next-door neighbour, Pauline, to report that her husband was missing.
The policeman asked for a description of the missing man.
Vicky described him clearly and in detail, 'He is 35 years old, 6ft 4inches, has dark eyes, dark wavy hair, an athletic build, weighs 185 pounds, is softly-spoken and is fabulous with the children.
Pauline interrupts her protesting, 'Why Vicky, your husband is 5 ft 8 inches, corpulent, bald, has a big mouth, and is horrid to your children.
Vicky replied, with a sigh, 'Yes, but who wants HIM back?'

WE ARE OVER HALF WAY HOME & LOOKING FORWARD TO COOLER TEMPS

DSC_0002
THIS KIND OF SUMS UP OUR UNCOMFORTABLE HOT HUMID DAY
It’s 3:21 in the afternoon on a hot humid Missouri day somewhere about 38 miles west of St. Louis.  We are all set up in a Walmart parking lot & I’m watching, ‘Leave It To Beaver’ on television.  Another long day on the road but we are over half way home.
Knew we had to be on our way early this morning so we were up & at em about 3 a.m.  Rolled out of of the Weatherford Walmart parking lot about 3:55 a.m. & with a big cheesy half moon in my driver’s side rear view mirror we headed east to do battle with the morning rush in Oklahoma City.
DSC_0002-001
HEADING INTO TULSA OKLAHOMA THIS MORNING…BY THE WAY I TAKE ALL THE PICS FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT WITH MY NIKON D-90
The advice the lady at the info center had given us Sunday was spot on.  In a darkened construction zone we found the ramp leading to the Kilpatrick Turnpike & quickly realized we were just about the only one’s on it…..just like the lady said.  By using the Kilpatrick, Turner, & Will Rogers Parkways, & another one in between I think, we were carried right round the north end of Oklahoma City to Tulsa.  Aside from a distant glow in the sky & a bunch of distant lights we never really did see Oklahoma City.  But, we did see something else.  Toll booths!!  Those Turnpikes cost us a total of $22 but I consider it money well spent for peace of mind from morning rush traffic woes.
----------
We blew into Tulsa just about morning rush hour but Garmin Gertie (our GPS) was up to the challenge & took us right through Tulsa without any problems
IMG_1950
<<< JUST NEVER KNOW WHO YOU MIGHT SEE IN A SHOE STORE
Our day was basically uneventful with the exception of having to unhook the Jeep to back ourselves out of a McDonald’s in Joplin Missouri.  We settled for egg salad sandwich's in the rig & promptly blew right out of town.
----------
We sure are not used to this humidity & it is true what they say about Arizona’s dryer climate being more comfortable.  Temp outside our rig right now is 87F.  Have had our dash air on for 3 afternoons in a row now while driving.  We expect to be in much cooler temps within a couple days.  Yaaaay.
IMG_1939
OK, it is now 8:30 at night & things have changed since I wrote the above paragraphs.  We are no longer at the sweltering Walmart location west of St. Louis.  We are now east of St. Louis in a Crackle Barrel lot.  We just couldn’t take the heat & humidity any longer so decided to bring in the slides, pull up the anchor, stow the gear, fire up the engine, put the dash Air on Max & hit the road.
----------
Headed out the parking lot & swung up onto I-44 heading East again.  It was 7 o’clock & I knew the 5 o’clock rush would be over & we could probably make it through St. Louis relatively unscathed.  The cold air coming out of the dash air vents felt so great I could have drove all night.
IMG_1944
FUEL STOP IN JOPLIN MISSOURI
Cities always look much nicer by night & I did enjoy seeing all the city lights as Garmin Gertie ripped us right through downtown St. Louis & spit us out the other side heading East.  Sun was down, temperatures were down & Kelly spotted a Cracker Barrel.  Compared to that noisy Walmart with all it’s traffic & 40 minute freight trains roaring by half a mile away we felt like we were parked in a quiet outdoor Library setting.  Now, how nice is that:))

HUMIDITY CONKS KELLY OUT & FRAZZLES MY HAIR!!
I have been sooooo enjoying the look of Spring as we travel through these emerald green April States of Oklahoma & Missouri.  The scenery is identical to our May scenery back home in Bayfield.  Fruit trees are blossoming & I even saw my first dandelions at a Rest Area.  Heard my first lawn mower too.
----------
Glanced at our mileage stats today & it looks like we did 484 miles on our first day, 488 miles the second day & 586 miles today.  We’re getting there……………

KELLY TRIES OUT A SPAGHETTI & CHILE DISH….PLUS A CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE
Had a question about why we didn’t have Motor cremated in Arizona before we left.  From experience we know this process can take nearly a week & we didn’t have a week to spare with me having to be back in Ontario for an important medical appointment.  The Wickenburg Vet handles the arrangements & the earliest we could get Motor in was Monday.  Just like people, there are facilities which specifically cremate animal remains so arrangements have to be made such as transporting the animals to & from the facility.  It all takes time & time is something we did not have a lot of.

New Blog Follower HEMBREE joins the Bunch in the last few days of this winter’s travels. Hang in for the summer Hembree & we’ll have the big wheels rolling in October again.
----------
And again, thank you everyone for all your kind thoughts & words regarding our dear little Motormouse.  Even had comments from as far away as Australia & New Zealand.  We are missing our little Mouse so much & I think it is probably going to impact me more when we get home.

GROANER’S CORNER:((   A vampire bat came flapping in from the night covered in fresh blood, and parked himself on the ceiling of the cave to get some sleep.
Pretty soon all the other bats smelled the blood and started hassling him about where he got it. He told them to leave him alone and let him get some sleep.
However, they persisted until he finally gave in. "Okay, follow me," he said as he flapped out of the cave with hundreds of bats behind him.
Down through a valley they went, across a river and into a forest of trees. Finally he slowed and all the other bats excitedly milled around him.
"Now, do you see that tree over there?" he asked. "YES, YES, YES!" all the other bats screamed in a frenzy.
"Good," shouted the blood soaked bat, "because I didn't!"

LONG HOT DAY ON THE ROAD WITH TEARS BEHIND MY SUNGLASSES

DSC_0070

SUNRISE ON I-40 THIS MORNING

It was a quiet night but with all the Route 66 Casino parking lot floodlights overhead it made Arizona’s brightest afternoon look like a cloudy day.  When we rolled into that parking lot Saturday afternoon we were only the second RV there.  This morning we tippy toed out through a dozen or more sleepy rigs scattered about.  It was 5:55 a.m.

----------

Minutes later we topped a rise west of Albuquerque New Mexico & were treated to a beautiful sight.  I had only ever seen this once before & that was driving into Las Vegas Nevada late one night a bunch of years ago.  The lights of Albuquerque were splayed out over a black velvet desert floor like a bunch of glittering silver & gold diamonds.  What a beautiful sight it was & not one I will soon forget.  But, you have to be there before sunrise:))

----------

Climbed our way up & over the mountain range east of Albuquerque & soon found ourselves on the very western reaches of  the great American Plain.  Watched the mountains disappear in my side view mirror & whispered a quiet, ‘see you guys in October’.    A small set of mountains out around Tucumcari & that was it.  We were out onto the rolling hills & grasslands of the Plains for sure now.  And, it’s a long ways across those Plains too.  Oh how nice it was to see fields upon fields of vibrant & fresh looking Spring grass again.  Seemed the further East we drove the more greener & abundant the grass became.  And, what a treat to see all those fresh new green leaves on the trees.  Sure is looking like Spring in these here parts alright.  And, what a cheer-up that was.

DSC_0076

YEP, WE’RE HEADING HOME SO IT’S EGG SALAD SANDWICH TIME AGAIN

DSC_0079

My destination today was to reach an area west of Oklahoma City.  And, we did that.  This blog is coming to you from a Walmart parking lot in Weatherford Oklahoma right beside I-40.  We are about 60 miles west of Oklahoma City.  It hit 90F today & that old sweaty humid feeling was in the air again.  It was so nice to have been humidity free these past 5 months.  And to think, it’s only April 1rst & we are only in Oklahoma.  Got a feeling it’s going to be a hot humid summer in Southwestern Ontario.

----------

We have an hour’s early morning drive to reach the big City & beat the Monday morning manic madness.  Stopped at an Oklahoma Info center just east of the Texas State line & the lady there recommended we do the toll road way around the downtown core.  We will take her advice & do that.  Will let you know tomorrow night how we made out.

----------

We do not have a strong Verizon connection here in Weatherford tonight so I will keep the blog short & the photos down to a dull roar. Couldn’t even find myself a joke on the internet.  If I can’t get it to publish tonight I will try again in the morning once we have cleared the area.  Tried our recently acquired Wilson Sleek antennae & power booster but the only thing that piece of technology seems good for is a paper weight on a windless day.

A lot of tears behind my sunglasses today. Hard to keep one’s mind off things mile after mile so it has a tendency to wander through memory banks pausing for a Motor memory here & stopping for another one there.

----------

Want to thank everyone for all the kind comments, emails & shouts about our little Motormouse. Kelly sometimes reads the comments to me while we’re driving & it was the comments, shouts, & emails that in part caused the tears behind my sunglasses today. We thank you all so much for your care & concern. Hadn’t realized how much our little Cora had reached out & touched so many kind hearts.
